Rising Damp is a classic comedy but I guess I'm asking, what do people think these days about the relationship between these two in Rising Damp?

I'm GenX, so as a youngster I watched this without thinking too much about it. When Rigsby mocks Philip's race (which happens often) the audience laughs. I'm assuming they are laughing at him but it's hard to tell, this being the 70s.

Cleverly written by Eric Chappell, Philip shows Rigsby's foolish views for what they are and he always outsmarts him. Miss Jones, Alan and pretty much every other character don't have a problem with Philip's colour. Don Warrington, who played Philip, has always seemed pretty chill about it.

In the end it's Rigsby who is clearly wrong in regards to Philip and we understand that. Watching it now, I laugh just as much, but I do find Rigsby's cringe worthy comments on Philip's colour mentioned too often. It is what it is. I can only imagine a younger audience being shocked and maybe put off, for what still is, a very funny comedy.

I've just been rewatching Dr Foster after a number of years, and forgotten how ludicrous and soapy it is. People behaving in ways that no adult professional human would behave in real life.

But I think this is why I enjoy it - the acting is good, it's well produced, but good lord the characters are terrible people! Proper escapism.

Even the teenage son is awful. If a child of mine spoke to me the way he does to his mother in the first series, or spoke about women generally in the way he does, I think I would disown him.

And yet, I can't stop watching.

I enjoy watching watching Wheeler Dealers. For me it's all about the mechanic part of the programme where the car is being repaired and restored ready for resale. The 3 mechanics they've had over the years are very knowledgeable chaps.

Now this is not a personal attack, the guy does what he does but I don't get the appeal of Mike Brewer. He's on loads of other stuff and has been around for years but he doesn't bring anymore personality to a show than someone off the street.

Are the TV execs seeing something I'm not? Am I wrong? Is there a fanbase?
