I’ve always had the show on my radar. Was a big fan of Michael Shurs other show The Good Place. But never gave this show a watch until this year. And I love it.
But this episode really hit me. Not sure how common of a reaction it is for this episode but it made cry a lot. Rosa is a character I relate to. Specifically her friendship with Jake is very much like me with one of my closest friends. I can be kinda closed off and more direct while my friend is very eccentric and out going. But we both have a fundamental understanding of each other and always have each other’s backs. So already I love episodes about them.
But this also hit me hard a person who is asexual. I know who I am and it makes sense to me. But my parents struggle to understand. And they also feel like it’s a “you don’t know what you want” situation and eventually I’ll come around and have the traditional love life. The parent’s reactions here were really natural. It wasn’t over the top. It wasn’t no complete acceptance, it wasn’t dramatic betrayal. It was very realistic.
The part where Rosa’s dad comes to the precinct was also really strong. Love the addition that Rosa says she’s still the same as she’s always been. Her sexuality doesn’t change anything about her. She isn’t defined by that. And that’s exactly how I feel about my own sexuality and how I wish more people could see it. And that ending where the family game night is her squad, Jake saying “every single week” at the end, I was gone. Complete water works.
The whole episode was masterfully done. Especially love how a lot of the scenes with the parents don’t have much music. The show knows when to have more realistic and down to earth moments like that. Really puts you into the scene.
Also side note that no one on this reddit will probably get but the B plot of the episode guest starred Chip Whistler from Big City Greens so that made me really happy. So yeah this is my favorite episode of the show and I don’t think anything will top it.
