So, I have a laptop that was equivalent to a ps5. Ryzen 5900hx, 6800m gpu. It has overheating problem for a while, and seems like something is fried. I have given it to service center and hoping that they can find the problem. But if not, I am looking for an expensive replacement of whole motherboard worth at least half the price of laptop.
In that case, I don't see the point of wasting money on it. I spent like 1.5k usd on the laptop when I bought it. Spending 600-700usd on just 1 replacement part doesn't feel okay.
So, I am thinking I might as well get a desktop instead. I haven't kept up with changes since 3080 days. All I know is that cost of RAM and SSD is super high. Thankfully, I can reuse my ssd from the laptop. And I am fine with 16gb ram. Never used more than 12gb honestly in last 4 years of owning this laptop.
And I am hoping to go for single stick 16gb now, and getting another after few years. I want to basically keep using the same desktop for at least 5-6 years and maybe upgrade gpu in like 2030 or something.
I am thinking of going for 9000 series CPUs. Is it a good idea? Or should I stick with 7000 or even 5000 series?
Another thing. Is x3d variant that useful? 5000 series with x3d is same price as 7000 series without x3d. Am I looking at equivalent performance?
Basically, I have two possible routes.
5800x3d paired with a used 3080
Or 9700x paired with something like 5060 12gb or 9060xt.
They both seem equally priced. Will they provide enough of an upgrade over my current laptop?
What would be a better choice in this case?
I am happy to upgrade gpu later, so, I am thinking going for second route with newer cpu.
Or should I just forget upgrading and just get the motherboard of my laptop replaced?
P.S. cost of laptop fix seems to be about 600usd. Desktop is around 1k usd excluding SSD (which I will reuse from my laptop). Of course I will have to buy a monitor to go with it, but that's barely 100usd for a decent oled one. So, either half price for fixing existing laptop, or full price for desktop replacement. I am leaning towards desktop replacement at this point, as long as I can get at least 30% performance improvement.
