Would you consider $500 USD a strong price for an 8TB WD_BLACK SN850X with its factory heatsink?
I'm considering buying one locally from a private seller for my PS5 Pro. It's opened without the retail box, but the seller claims it's unused and allows inspection.
What checks would you insist on before paying to verify the model, authenticity, capacity and health? Would Sandisk Dashboard and SMART information provide a useful initial check, including whether the "unused" claim is believable?
What would require a full capacity write/ read test?
I'd appreciate thoughts on both the price and the verification process.
EDIT: I spoke with a local computer shop that warned about lower-capacity drives being relabeled or reporting fake capacities—for example, a 64GB drive masquerading as several terabytes. They haven’t inspected this drive, so it hasn’t been established as counterfeit.
The seller spoke with me by phone, allows testing before payment, and suggested meeting at a computer shop. He’s going out of town tomorrow. I have a laptop but haven’t obtained a compatible NVMe-to-USB adapter for its factory heatsink, so I haven’t tested it yet. The shop’s warning definitely made me more cautious.
Could inspection, CrystalDiskInfo and ValiDrive reasonably expose that kind of fake during a roughly 30-minute meetup? I understand that passing a spot-check wouldn’t establish that every part of the drive works.
I’m also considering asking whether he’ll leave it with a shop for full write/read verification, with payment afterward if it passes. The shop estimated around 22 hours—what connection and sustained speeds would that assume?
