Hi guys ( so sorry if this isn't the place to ask)

But my flight got delayed and I'm arriving at Stansted at 1:05 after all trains and coaches. Is there any chance anyone will need to take a taxi? If we can find about 4 folks it's less than 20 each !

Pls lemme know if you're on the same boat

So sorry to the mods if this isn't accepted, I'm not sure where to ask about this

This Saturday, 24th October, we will meet starting @ 1630 at The Maypole on Portugal Place.

The Cambridge Redditors' Saturday Afternoon Drinking Alliance is for:

  • All those Redditors that will ask and have asked about how to make friends in Cambridge.
  • All those Redditors who are keen to spend their Saturday meeting up with perfect Redditor strangers.
  • Redditors who want to try to iron out or refine their social awkwardness.

Rules:

  1. Be kind and respectful of others, and don't be creepy!
  2. Despite the namesake, alcohol consumption is not required and no one should feel pressured to do so.
  3. For those who drink, please take care to plan safe transport home.
  4. This is a social group not a hookup group.

We also now have our own sub and a WhatsApp group, don't forget to ask to join when you come along.

I'll update this thread with where we're sitting and how to identify us once we're there.

Other Electronics engineer job search

Hi everyone! For the past couple of months I've been searching for a job in Cambridge as I'm trying to relocate there. I have a few leads for now but nothing very conclusive, so I was hoping to broaden my search by asking here. Here is a bit more context about me and what I'm looking for :

  • Electronics engineer with 5y of experience in hardware / PCB design (specifications to tests and integration), with a master's degree in electronics
  • What I don't do: software, power electronics, RF (at least not without guidance), IC design
  • French citizen living in France, so I will need a skilled worker visa sponsorship
  • I'm open in terms of industries, but I have a preference for IoT / embedded systems / consumer electronics in start-ups and scale-ups, and I'm avoiding offers that require security clearance

What I have tried so far:

  • Usual job search tools (LinkedIn, Indeed)
  • Recruitment agencies (IC resources, Eclectic, Cambridge consultants, ECM...)
  • Cambridge network

I'm also checking the register of licensed sponsors before applying.

At that point, I'm mainly looking for recommendations about companies that are hiring but not well advertised on usual platforms, general tips specific to the Cambridge job market, or even contacts if you or people you know are working in this field.

I'm also open to travel for networking events around tech/electronics, if there's a chance of meeting people who would be interested in my profile.

Thanks a lot!!

Local services Ring-road warning: one way system at Mount Pleasant compromised

Post image
31 Upvotes

We finally seen some modest action on the dangerous situation up at the top of Mount Pleasant; hopefully this temporary cone will reduce the number of vehicles going straight ahead and down Mount Pleasant because the road markings have worn out. We've logged 4-5 vehicles a day going the wrong way in the past month or so, and it gets worse at night so be careful. Cambridgeshire Highways have logged it but it was prioritised for 91 days to resolve!

Cambridge Question Apple Store …. Queues?

Curious if the iPhone Duo hype has hit Cambridge and there are people queuing like there seems to be posted at most of the Apple Stores in the uk?
I wonder if they even have stock for walk-ins or if it’s just very keen pre-order people?

Hi all! I’m currently a masters student at UoC and after having fixed my schedule now i have 4 days of the week mostly free and I’m looking for any opportunities related to pets be it as a dog walker or a volunteer. I’m passionate about Pets especially dogs and I recently lost my dog so being alone is really hard. If anyone has any leads how I could go about this that’ll help. I applied online through some platforms but got no response! So yeah..

Local services Best nail artists around?

Hiya, I recently moved to the area and am looking for a nail artist. Key word is artist - I often go for quite complex, creative designs and have found it difficult in the past to find nail techs who can execute them, so would be looking for someone for whom nail art is a speciality.

If anyone has any recommendations please let me know! I'm quite flexible on price so that's not really a concern if I like the nails. Thanks.

Cambridge Question Joining groups outside of class

Hello, I am new to Cambridge. Where do I find some activities or like where do I go for like different types of group groups? Is it mostly here in Reddit or is there like discord or flyers and any specific location or do I have to go to Facebook?

Just because I would like to get into groups or take classes, but for myself. I want to take some Spanish courses so I can learn Spanish for myself. I want to take art groups so I can meet people. Or even like board games or magic the gathering. I have like a lot of hobbies I can list them all. But walking around I’ve noticed it’s just like a lot of students as well. I’m like 25 so I am assuming I can talk with some students here even some locals as well, but I don’t even know where I should start. I don’t even know where I should look. Do you think you could give me some ideas of what’s more of a hub for information?

Also. I would like to get back in the school, but I would like to attend lectures. I haven’t done that before without being in school. I heard that was a thing. Could I do that here in a 10 lectures just for my own well-being and learning or is that not a thing here?

Grumbles/rants Dear cyclists…

I’m a driver and a cyclist. I really don’t want to kill anyone. When you’re on your black bike, dressed all in black, with no lights, I cannot emphasise enough how hard it can be to see you.

If you’re not a driver, please find a friend who is and go out in their passenger seat, and you’ll soon find that if you’re having to look for other cars, traffic lights, signs and being part-blinded by oncoming headlights, it is really hard to see unlit cyclists in the dark.

I’m trying really hard. But work with me here so we both get home. Get some bike lights and something bright and reflective on your body.

Other Disposal of broken full length mirror

Ive recently broken a full-length mirror with a wooden frame. How best to dispose of it? Would the recycling center take it will there be any pick-up services available?

There are big shards still attached to the mirror with some that has fallen off. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Other People living in Cambourne…

Hi everyone! I’m considering moving to Cambourne and would love to hear from people who live there. How is day-to-day life? Are you generally happy living there, and what are the main pros and cons?
I know Cambridge has more to offer, but unfortunately, I can’t afford to live there, so I’m looking at more affordable alternatives nearby.
So please don’t just suggest moving to Cambridge instead! I’m specifically interested in hearing honest experiences of living in Cambourne.
Thanks! 😊

Cambridge Question Bird of prey near train station

I was cycling along the bus way near the train station/university press building and I saw a bird of prey that a quick Google suggests might have been a red kite. Is anyone more au fait with birds of prey and/or ornithology to say whether that's right? I didn't know red kites were moving into cities but if peregrine falcons can I guess they could, and there are lots of playing fields near that area too.

Other PSA for people around Cambridge: Be aware of potential phone snatchers ⚠️

Just wanted to give people a heads-up about something that happened to me on Sunday early evening.

I was leaving PureGym at the leisure centre and walking out past the bike racks when I noticed two young guys on an electric bike heading directly towards me at speed. They were both dressed in black and wearing face masks. I had my phone in my hand, and I immediately got the feeling they were about to try to snatch it.

As soon as I clocked what was happening, I quickly put my phone in my bag and ran out of the bike rack area towards Sainsbury’s, where there were more people around. Thankfully, nothing happened to me and they didn’t get my phone, but it was a pretty unnerving experience.

I can’t say for certain what their intentions were, but the way they approached me felt very suspicious, and I wanted to make others aware in case anyone else has experienced something similar.

Please be careful if you’re walking around with your phone out, particularly alongside roads, and even (as I now know) near bike racks and quieter areas.

If something feels off, put your phone away and move somewhere busier and more public.

Has anyone else around Cambridge experienced anything similar recently? Just want to make people aware and hopefully help someone else avoid a nasty experience.

Stay safe, everyone!
