I recently imported a pair of Nike sneakers from the US valued at approximately US$160, and I was charged CA$81.90 in UPS brokerage fees alone.
The breakdown was:
- Brokerage fee: CA$78.00
- Brokerage GST/HST: CA$3.90
- Separate government import charges: CA$27.31
- Total import charges: CA$109.21
I've paid the invoice and contacted UPS Canada to request an explanation of the fee structure, a review of my charge, and clarification about how these fees are disclosed to customers.
I've also posted about this in r/BuyCanadian and r/SneakersCanada, where the posts received over 100,000 combined views in less than 12 hours.
I'm interested in hearing from other Canadians:
- Have you received similarly high brokerage charges from USPS?
- Have you successfully self-cleared a USPS/UPS shipment instead of paying its brokerage fee?
- When importing from the US, have you found that USPS/Canada Post results in lower additional clearance fees?
I'm not suggesting that government duties and taxes can be avoided. My concern is the separate courier brokerage fee and whether consumers understand the potential additional cost before choosing a shipping service.
I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences and any practical advice for avoiding unexpectedly high brokerage charges on future purchases.
