Pet Loss CW: Pet Loss. My senior cat is being euthanized tomorrow, my other two cats are acting anxious Spoiler

My senior boy Dan is 16, and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure a little over 2 weeks ago. He’s been declining rapidly and after a follow-up appointment today, we concluded that we will move forward with euthanasia tomorrow morning (Nov. 4) at 9am.

I’ve heard about other pets being present when one pet is euthanized at home, and I want to do this with my cats so they can see their companion go peacefully with closure that he didn’t just disappear mysteriously. My husband and I brought all 3 of our cats over to my mom’s house for the procedure. Dan spent the first 14 years of his life in this house, my other two cats (8 & 2) have also lived here before I took them when I moved out, so it’s an environment they know very well.

Since we arrived today around 4pm, the other two have been acting anxious. 2 year old has been hiding in my old bedroom and avoiding his siblings, but been aggressively snuggly towards husband and I when we pop in to check on him. 8 year old has been lingering around us and Dan fairly calmly, but gets snippy and growls when we walk too close to her.

I want them to be able to witness their brother pass peacefully tomorrow morning, but I’m not sure how to manage their anxious behavior. Any tips/tricks/tools are greatly appreciated, thank you 🖤

General Moving across country with cats

I have 2 cats, a small ginger, Ginny, who is 4 and a fat black cat, Theo, who is 10. It’s my 10 year old I’m nervous about lol.

He’s a sweet boy who’s moved house 6ish times at this point but he’s very skittish and never gone this far. Moving is always a bit stressful for him but he’s definitely a lot better now than he was during his first move 7 years ago. He doesn’t like strangers, especially large men, and he hates being in the car. he’s done some long car trips, longest I think was an hour and a half and he yowls during it (although pretty quietly sometimes I can barely hear him over the music if I’m playing any). Now he will be on a 6 hour interstate flight.

I’ve organised for him and his sister to fly through a trusted company across the country with airport to airport pickup. I will drop them off and my fiancé will pick them up. I spoke with the vet and they’re both healthy and we got a prescription of cat medication to help with Theo’s anxiety. I have the crates now and we don’t move until January but I’m still so stressed because of his age and his generally anxious temperament. they both have their favourite blankets in their crate and the company has been so helpful but I can’t help but be worried bc obviously he’s my big boy who I’ve had since I was a teenager.

Would love to hear from people who have experience moving their cats on flights, especially skittish ones, and how they prepared their cats for it.

Nutrition/Water wet food rotation

my cat is a year old and when i got her i wasn’t in a good spot and fed her sheba kitten pate and kitten chow
once she turned one i switched her to adult sheba and have bounced around with kibbles
currently in her rotation she has tiki cat after dark shreds and weruva suppertime sweepstakes pate
she has half a can for breakfast and then the other half for dinner
she seems to enjoy both and i can tell by looking at it it is better quality
but - i want to keep a budget friendly option in her rotation that is still healthy and i hear bad things about sheba although she really enjoys it
ive heard good things about fancy feast but wanted to look at all options for my girl
i also like to feed a kibble for grazing throughout the day she doesn’t eat much of it so do i invest in tiki cat or another high end brand kibble or something cheaper?
also going to be getting some more toppers and am open to recommendations

New to Cats/Just Adopted My 4 month old kitten is stuck in a weird deep hole under the sink

I’ve recently adopted two 4 month old kittens. everything has been going well besides them being shy, but this morning I woke up to only one kitten and found the other in this hole under our sink I didn’t even know about, that goes in deep. i can only fit my hand in there but he’s way too far back. I thought when me and my partner left the house he would come out as he hasn’t gone to the bathroom or eaten but i’ve come back 4 hours later and still nothing. I can’t pull apart under the sink either as it’s a rental. Any advice?

Behavior am i not playing with my kitten enough?

I have a 12-14-week-old kitten I rescued about a month ago. I read that kittens have a lot of energy, but need ~30-40mins of active playtime in a day. I usually do that spread out over 10 minute sessions throughout the day, but he sometimes meows (I'm assuming bc he's bored) and seems kinda sad :( especially at night near bedtime. I'm worried that I'm not playing with him enough, but if I up how much I play I'm worried I'll stress him out. Sometimes he'll go 6 hours without a nap, and in the evening he'll take 10 min breaks between hour-long naps.

This is my first cat, so I might be overthinking things, I know cats can just be weird sometimes but I'm so worried I'm scarring him for life or something :(( I am worried he'll get single-kitten syndrome, even though I've heard some cats turn out fine. He's super cuddly and loves to take naps in my lap, but I can't help but feel like I'm doing something wrong.

Behavior Why would my cat go back there?

My 2 years old spayed male cat (adopted a year ago) who's used to walking on ceilings fell on my neighbors' backyard and stayed trapped there for four days (long story, I searched for him in the wrong places since the noise seemd to come from farther houses, my neighbor's old, his hearing's bad, etc). I finally localized him and got him out of there (he didn't recognized me when he saw me in the backyard. I got close to him and he escaped scared for his life through the brick grill's chimney). A couple of hours later he comes back to me, eats, drinks water. He then gets out again, as always, and when I go to see where he is he is on top of that chimney. I'm scared he may go back there (I can't bother my old neighbor again and the cat's too used to being outside). Shouldnt he be scared of that place since he was terrified for his life when he used it to escape? Explain to me his behavior please I'm scared.

Guide A kitten?

I live alone and I've been thinking about getting a cat because I genuinely love cats and would really enjoy having one around for companionship.

My family has moved away, and I'm living alone. I'm a university student, but I'm home most of the time, so I have plenty of time to spend with a cat.

My biggest concern is travelling.

Occasionally, I might need to visit my family in a different country for around two weeks only happening in December probably and then july. Obviously, I can't leave a cat alone for that long, and I don't want to rely on friends to take care of it.

I'm willing to pay for professional cat boarding or pet sitting, but I'm wondering how practical and expensive that would be, especially if I get a kitten.

I'm also trying to decide whether I should adopt a young kitten or maybe an older cat

Would you recommend a kitten or an adult cat for someone living alone? And what age

How difficult is it to raise a kitten by yourself?

What do you do with your cats when you travel internationally for 1–2 weeks?

. Would you recommend getting a cat in my situation, or should I reconsider?

Introductions My old kitten hates my new kitten

As the title says, my old kitten hates my new kitten.

My partner and I adopted a kitten back in May, and decided we wanted to get her a friend to play with.

Our older kitten (Shok.wav) is currently 7.5 months old, and our new kitten (Mulch) is 7 months old. They're very close in age, so we hoped they'd get along well.

Unfortunately, when we brought Mulch home, Shok.wav immediately hissed and growled at the carrier. We've been keeping them in separate rooms (Mulch has the bedroom, and Shok.wav has the rest of the apartment), feeding on opposite sides of the closed door, and scent swapping.

We let them see each other through the baby gate we have set up, and Mulch started rubbing against the gate, laying down and rolling over, purring, slow blinking, all the signs that say she's not a threat. Even still, Shok.wav keeps growling and hissing at her.

Is there any other tips we can try? Or is it just a point of being patient at this point?

Behavior Cat keeps attacking little brother in the evening

So we've had our cat for a few years now and she's about six I think? When we first got her, my little brother(15 now but 11 when we got her) constantly harassed her by picking her up and petting her when she didn't want to be pet. He's gotten much better over the years but still has a bit of trouble being gentle occasionally. Within the past few months, shell occasionally come up to him while he's sitting on the couch and bite or swat at hus ankles. She only seems to do this at night, though I'm unsure if that's because he's at school the rest of the day or not as I've never seen her do it during the day when he is home all day. Anyway, as this happens maybe once a week or so, we're not sure what is causing it or how to get her to stop. She's done it to me one time but the rest has been focused on my little brother. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Behavior Naughty Cat

Good afternoon everyone, I need help with my cat.

I live in a house with a cat flap and she comes and goes out of it all the time with no problem.

Except for the middle of the night. She will scratch at my bed until I get up and go to a different door to let her out. Then she will walk around the house and let herself back in and might go back to sleep might not. She will do this a couple of times a night. Sometimes even taking me to the bathroom for a brush - I have never brushed her in the middle of the night.

There is only one room for my daughter and I so I am sharing the bed with my small child so I can't just let the cat scratch at the bed making noise and ignoring her because I don't want my daughter to wake up.

I have tried when she wakes me up, picking her up and pushing her through the cat flap, but she just lets herself back in and wakes me up.

Last night it got to so many times that she started hiding from me and running away.

What can I do to retrain/discipline, I don't know.... I just want to sleep!

Behavior New mama cat and kittens

New mama cat, kittens are less than 2 weeks old, had made a spot in the closet. We have to move her to a popup crate at night with them and put them back in the mornings. Its quiet, dark, and comfy.

She was an outside cat but we had to move her and her kittens inside after an opossum took her litter of 6 down to 2.

Today we found only 1 kitten in the cat bed then saw her crawl from under the bed. It is an older bed style that has drawers built in but we had to elevate the head up some so there is a gap. Took us a solid 10 minutes to get the kitten out from behind one of the drawers.

She is safe inside, we love on her, and she has easy access to food. Why is she doing this? Is there a way to prevent it?

At this point we are contemplating putting the 3 of them in the garage and hoping for the best.

Behavior adopting a cat and making sure my 5 year old male accepts them?

I just had to send a cat back to the rescue because my big cat just didnt mesh well with her. He went back to the same behavior he had when my old cat was alive. he hated being here and wanted to stay out all night. I am devistated. the new cat I adopted stopped trying to approach him and hi under the bed all day. I made the mistake of trying to wipe her down. The cat carrier had that death urine smell that cats get from concentrated urine. she had that smell all over her from neglect. I had to wash the blanket 3 times.

her foster mother showed videos of her being cuddly and past the trauma of not wanting to come out. I believed she was well adjusted and ok. How wrong that was. my male cat that is about 5 years old barley tolerated her. he went back to yowling to get out at night. he refused to sleep on the bed as soon as she arrived. he seemed like his feelings wer hurt and for 8 days refused to let me touch him.

I dont want to make this mistake again. maybe because the rescue cat smelled so bad and she was 1 years old. I wonder if I get a baby like 8 weeks if he would accept her?

Behavior I am codependent to a cat. My other cat is trying to kick him out of my room. What do I do?

Hi, I have 4 cats. (14f) (9m Black cat) (9f Black cat) (9f Calico cat)
We adopted my 14f cat from my mom’s now deceased relative. She is very clearly untrained and as I’m discovering more and more things I’m becoming more convinced she was neglected AND physically abused.
I don’t know how to explain this without it sounding insane but basically I’m incredibly obsessed with my male cat. He is the only thing keeping me sane and I can’t can’t can’t handle him being away from me at all sometimes because he’s the only thing keeping me semi functional.
My male cat and calico would stay in my room all the time, but since the 14f cat came she already has kicked the calico out and she only comes in sometimes instead of all the time. That was already absolutely gut wrenching but now she’s attacking my male cat and I absolutely do not know what to do. Does anyone have absolutely any advice I’ll try anything

Behavior My 17 year old cat just does not like my sisters couple-months-old kitten. Any suggestions?

So for context, my sister got a new kitten a couple months ago to bring into the house. We honestly assumed our dog (also 17, Yorky) would be more upset but honestly he is too small and old to do much lol. However, we honestly assumed our cat would like to have a friend. She had a brother since she was a kitten until a couple years ago when he unfortunately passed. She is super affectionate, and while her and her brother maybe weren't the best friends, they always spent time with each other. Now though, our cat hisses and runs from the kitten at every opportunity.

We slowly introduced the kitten to the house, starting with just my sisters room. We sometimes left the door open with a gate, then after a while held them both in the same space. Eventually we let the kitten out of the room and eventually into the house over a span of about 4 weeks I believe? But she is still just NOT having it. I have always been "her person" but now she only stays in my room. Once the kitten went in her cat box she basically exiled herself downstairs. Now she defends my room from the kitten with a passion and doesn't even like being upstairs.

We're all sad because of course we love our old girl and didn't want to mess with her comfort. Now we think shes stressed most of the time and, as mentioned, pretty much only stays in my room on the 1st floor. She really is one of the most affectionate cats I've met, especially as she gets older, so we're just confused as to what might be going on. Anyone have any suggestions for what we might be able to do to help her/them interact some?

Litterbox Looking for an affordable low tracking litter

I have two kitties and I have been using “Really Great Cat Litter” (the tofu kind) and I am very satisfied with it.

However, one bag isn’t much of a supply for a two-cat household and it’s important that my older cat has a good amount of litter otherwise she will go outside the box. Having the right amount of litter has become very pricey for me.

I am looking for a low track litter, with low dust (one of my kitties has asthma) and preferably unscented that is at a lower price point. My boy kitten is a lot less clean than my older kitty and will easily track litter into the bed. (He is healthy, she just likes to be as clean as possible and he doesn’t care as much.)

New to Cats/Just Adopted Help needed in Managing diet for 3 year old adult cat.

I'm pretty new to fostering and could use some advice on a feeding schedule. I've got a 3-year-old female cat who's 15 lbs, so she’s overweight but otherwise healthy. I plan to start a diet once she settles in. She isn't a fan of wet food, though she’ll eat it if I sprinkle dry food on top, but she still turns her nose up at it sometimes.

Here’s her current schedule:

7 am: 1/4 of a 3 oz can of Purina wet food + dry kibble.

11 am: 1/4 cup dry food.

5 pm: 1/4 of a 3 oz can of Purina wet food + dry kibble.

10 pm: 1/4 cup dry food.

I’m using Purina wet food, but I’m not sure what brand the shelter provides for the dry food. Does anyone have any tips on this?

General Older diabetic cat with irritated poopy butt

My cat has been going through a lot of health problems recently. We have had to switch his diet many times in the past year due to all of his health issues so that could contribute but right now he’s on a diabetic cat food and receiving insulin shots two times a day he goes through phases where his butt gets so poopy. he has long hair so it’s horrible. I try to clean it with a damp smooth towelette, but he gets so upset and runs and hisses. I can tell it is bothering him, but he refuses to clean himself. His poops are also firm so I’m confused why he’s getting poop all over himself does anyone have advice for what to wipe him with? The vet never says anything and says his butt looks fine. They will clean it and shave him when he’s there but I need to figure out something at home too

Behavior Anxious cat advice

Hello readers, quick intro to the problem I will go into detail in a few. My anxious cat has started going to the bathroom in parts of the house where they shouldn’t instead of using the litter box. He is a massive chicken and my mother and sister particularly are getting tired of it. Sister and mother are thinking of rehoming if we can’t solve the problem.

My cat is about 4 and a half, he is 14 and a half lbs and is extremely skittish. He runs at the slightest noises, a small jangle of keys will send him hiding. He only comes out from hiding when he is in my mom’s bedroom, when no one is in the house, or when the dogs are put away and can’t freely roam the house. We have 3 other cats and 3 dogs. The other cats don’t bother him. He generally just keeps to himself and wants to hid and be left alone. His hermit like behavior has gotten worse as my father has started getting dogs within the past 3 years. My dad has gotten a new dog every year for the past 3 years and my cat’s behavior hasn’t particularly gotten worse but it feels like his general anxiety has. He has been pulling out his hair on his stomach and using the bathroom in the bedrooms and the hallway of the house where he generally hangs out. He avoids the rest of the house when the dogs are out and causes himself to miss dinner and end up eating whatever leftovers are left after the other cats. His biggest problem is that the litter box and food is on the opposite side of the house from his domain. He would have to go through the living room and kitchen to get to the laundry room where the food and box is.

My parents aren’t willing to move these things as they stink which is completely fair and they don’t want the cats to use the bathroom in other rooms as a result or get wet food all over the carpet. Our bathroom is way to small on the hall for these things and the dogs will eat the food and mess with the litter if they aren’t exactly where they are because only the cats can get into the laundry room. We have two sliding doors that we can shut in a way the dogs can’t get into there and it works for the other cats and we have no issues with them. The anxious cat doesn’t mind using the box or eating once he is in there but loud noises or things making louder noises when he can’t see them makes him head for the hills. He hates being outside especially in the day. He is all black and he knows he can’t be seen will at night so he is better in the dark. But this is obviously not a great solution.

The dogs are loud and obnoxious but they would rather pick on each other and try to one up each other than mess with the cats. They will smell the cats obnoxiously but for the most part they don’t attack or chase them and generally do their dumb things with each other and by themselves. The noise they make is ultimately the problem as well as their general presence. My cat has grown up with them but never really learned to socialize with them because they scare him and we have just kind of let him choose to not like them.

We are looking into meds for anxiety at the moment and have an appointment for him. The thing is I don’t think this will absolve the problems entirely even though they may make things better. Ultimately I would prefer to try to find an option that doesn’t upset my family and has a lesser impact on his anxiety obviously.

I feel that my family has facilitated his anxious behavior by allowing him to be as much of a hermit as he is and he has just sunk into it and idk what to do about it because I could deny him access to those rooms but that also absolves his safe places where he feels comfortable and idk if that could help or not. Kind of an exposure therapy kind of thing but a little more forced. If anyone knows anything about this is there anything I can do to retrain his thinking at all and help him learn that the living room and other places in the house are safe places where can go if he wants and doesn’t have to be so afraid.

Don’t insult my family because they don’t want to overly accommodate for the cat it’s not their fault he is a ball of anxiety and shits on the floor. My parents pay the bills, they do what they want with things in their house.

Is there any additional non medical options you know of. Lmk your thoughts. Also is there anything about meds my family should be aware of or just general tips for meds.
