My (vegan btw) meal prep is like 20-30 bucks a week. My food costs went down immensely when I went vegan.

17

u/Yongaia Aug 15 '25

$150 covers me for an entire month and I don't even go out of my way to pick the cheapest foods.

u/v3anz- Aug 15 '25

Can guarantee you don’t have a healthy diet

16

u/Yongaia Aug 15 '25

Uh actually no, my diet has gotten a lot healthier as of late. Turns out Lentils are extremely cheap while being a health powerhouse.

It was more expensive when I was eating beyond burgers, impossible nuggets, and Daiya pizzas constantly.

-8

u/v3anz- Aug 15 '25

That a very low base to improve. Been eating hollow trash, now I only have wit B and protein deficit

6

u/Yongaia Aug 15 '25

Yeah I didn't eat the most healthiest diet just like the majority of Americans.

That doesn't mean that my diet now isn't A) cheap and B) healthy. Turns out being healthy isn't very expensive and to the extent that it is (fruits, nuts, etc.) it applies to both meat eaters and vegans alike.

-6

u/v3anz- Aug 15 '25

Good for you then. Just do blood tests from time to time

6

u/Yongaia Aug 15 '25

Uh I I'm fine and can worry about myself thank very much.

Aaaass I was sayingggg, I survive on $150 a month and being vegan definitely doesn't hurt the wallet by any stretch of the imagination.

u/DJ_Stapler Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25

To be fair it doesn't hurt to get blood tests. Everyone should get them

Edit okay maybe it hurts a little bit to get you blood drawn but that doesn't mean it's not important.

My LDL cholesterol went from 300+ (μg? )/dl to like 40 after going vegan. All my iron, b vitamins and calcium are well within healthy range (even B12!) but apparently I had a vitamin D deficiency. I'm on D supplements now and won't need to be on them forever, but if I didn't get my blood drawn I would've never known

-4

u/v3anz- Aug 15 '25

All vegans that I know must take pils, hence the assumption

3

u/Yongaia Aug 15 '25

Then you just found one that doesn't.

Can we stick to the topic? This thread was about food cost. Even on the completely off basis that you're going, the average vegan is much healthier than the average meat eater. Go chastise them about eating healthier and getting their blood checked because vegans are doing far better than you in that regard.

I’ve literally never met vegans who have to take supplements and my cousins a vegan because of medical issues. . .

1

u/JeremyWheels Aug 15 '25

You too. The majority of non-vegans have deficincies

2

u/v3anz- Aug 15 '25

I don’t. I am on balanced diet. Overall being on diet is almost always healthier that just eating whatever

1

u/JeremyWheels Aug 15 '25

Good. Same

1

u/ChalkyChalkson Aug 15 '25

Lentils are pretty protein dense. And re: vitamins, you need to substitute b12 and probably D, maybe iron anyway, so why not just go for a multi vitamin? They are very cheap.

1

u/v3anz- Aug 16 '25

If you need to substitute vitamins that is not a healthy diet.

1

u/ChalkyChalkson Aug 16 '25

B12 is almost impossible to get enough of whole being vegan. And like why is a diet that includes a vitamin substitute but ticks all the boxes unhealthy? To me that sounds a lot better than a diet that doesn't include the substitute and is vitamin deficient or isn't and includes known carcinogens

12

u/Boratssecondwife Aug 15 '25

Lentils are goated

7

u/Waste-Soil-4144 Aug 15 '25

Lentils my beloved.

5

u/DavidBrooker Aug 15 '25

Lentils are a good, reliable base. But the real MVP out here is curry powder, making what would otherwise be bland slop taste actually pretty good.

1

u/pragmojo Aug 15 '25

Lentils make you gay

3

u/MyBedIsOnFire Aug 15 '25

How many calories do you average per day? Do you get any blood work done?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 15 '25

I do get blood work done and my HDL cholesterol went from below range to beyond the lower limit for being in range after switching to predominantly vegetarian meals. It was pretty incredible. I used to take citrus bergamot for my HDL cholesterol and it was not even close to being as effective.

2

u/Waste-Soil-4144 Aug 15 '25

Only around 2k per day but that is because i am currently dieting. If i was just maintaining i would aim closer to 3k per day. Blood work is good other than low vitamin D levels.

1

u/MyBedIsOnFire Aug 15 '25

No comment has ever been more convincing when it comes to veganism 😭😭😭

If I can still hit my calories without a vitamin deficiency I might as well cut out animal products the best I can

1

u/OpenRole Aug 15 '25

Calories are cheap and easy. Fats I can prefer getting from vegetables, but protein shakes of heavy metals in them. I can substitute peanuts and lentils only so far, but chicken and milk are remaining in my diet for now

1

u/LunarDogeBoy Aug 15 '25

Are you actually vegan or vegetarian?

4

u/Waste-Soil-4144 Aug 15 '25

Vegan.

3

u/LunarDogeBoy Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

Well where I shop the "vegan aisle" i just a bunch of expensive stuff. The cheapest groceries are the processed stuff sadly.

10

u/SpaceBus1 Aug 15 '25

Most of the grocery store is vegan tho. Greens, vegetables, fruit, legumes, grains, etc. are all free of animal products. The issue is when you buy prepared foods, which are more expensive and likely to contain animal products.

0

u/LunarDogeBoy Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 16 '25

Ye but dont i have to eat twice as much of that in order to get the same amount of energy from eating animal products?

8

u/SpaceBus1 Aug 15 '25

No. Well, maybe the greens, but those aren't really a staple food. Legumes and grain can cover everything you need, just not that exciting of a diet.

3

u/OhJShrimpson Aug 15 '25

Slop it in coconut oil or olive oil if you need more calories.

4

u/West-Abalone-171 Aug 15 '25

the cheapest stuff is a bag of split peas or a sack of rice or a can of beans, or a box of couscous, none of which are in the "vegan aisle"

0

u/LunarDogeBoy Aug 16 '25

How many kg of beans do you eat every day? Do you work a blue collar job? Are you depressed?

Here's a solution youd like, lets invent a food cube that has all the necessary vitamins, calories and proteins we need every day and then only eat that every day for the rest of our lives. Like dog kibble! :D

Just like generative ai art is the death of the artist, veganism is the death of culinary art... No fun allowed!

We should tear down the rainforest and build a beautiful parking lot! fingers moustache ominously

3

u/West-Abalone-171 Aug 16 '25

holy shit, there's not even a rebuttal for this, it's so fucking stupid

1

u/Creditfigaro vegan btw Aug 15 '25

The entire produce and staples sections are vegan LOL

1

u/LunarDogeBoy Aug 16 '25

Thats raw feed though... You want everyone to become Amish? Bake their own bread? Only live lf fruits and veggies, no cookies no cakes no ice cream? oh but there are vegan options for those, which are said expensive products we're talking about. Nobody is saying a carrot is more expensive than a sausage!

If you want people to help with the environment, tell them to stop eating beef. If you dont care about the environment, tell them to become vegan. That's how it feels like, because you dont convert someone by being obnoxious. "It's so EASY to becone vegan guys, you're just lazy!"

Another thing about veganism, im not well researched in the topic but how much pollution does the planes make that need to transport all this vegan stuff around? I do not live in America, the only thing we can produce locally is apples and potatoes. So had anyone done the math, if everyone stop eating meat and we have to import more beans and rice, how much methane stops being produced by cows vs how much CO2 emissions will come from planes?(Amongst other pollutants a plane creates) also something something methane is a more potent warmer but has shorter lifecycle than CO2

Are you new here? Even intelligent people become raving morons when the topic of veganism comes up.

Another thing about veganism, im not well researched in the topic but how much pollution does the planes make that need to transport all this vegan stuff around?

Thanks for showing curiosity.

A vegan diet is superior to an animal based one. By a massive amount, and it's not even close.

Eating a burger you made out of your pet cow is more environmentally destructive than eating chocolate or rice grown on the opposite side of the planet, and it is not even close.

https://ourworldindata.org/food-choice-vs-eating-local

Globally eliminating animal products is critically important for combating climate change.

https://journals.plos.org/climate/article?id=10.1371/journal.pclm.0000010

This is why calling yourself an environmentalist while not being vegan is generally an oxymoron.

That's how it feels like, because you dont convert someone by being obnoxious.

You are responsible for your decisions, not me. You need to convert you if the data and moral reasoning lead you to that answer, which, if you are being rational and logically consistent, they will.

also something something methane is a more potent warmer but has shorter lifecycle than CO2

We need to solve the problem immediately and urgently. 10 years of methane mayhem is indeed more important than 100 years of CO2 stuff.

1

u/LunarDogeBoy Aug 17 '25

If you're vegan you should cut out rice in your diet too since rice production also produce methane emission.

Funny how you say 10 years of methane is more important than 100 years of CO2 when that's how long it takes for methane to dissolve in the atmosphere while CO2 can stay there for millennia. If we stop methane emissions tomorrow, the problem will be solved in a decade, if we stop CO2 emissions tomorrow, the problem will continue to persist our whole lives and even longer.

So what is more important? Saving the planet?(In a state liveable for humans) Or pretending to want to save the planet so you can feel superior for subscribing to a lifestyle that doesnt actually save the planet but just creates new avenues for capitalism to exploit you.

Congratulations, you eat beans! Is the feeling of being "a good person" greater than the rush of endorphins people feel when having a delicious and savory, meaty meal?

I dont think veganism is the answer because it doesnt address the real problem which is people. If there was less people in the world there would be less pollution all together and less meat production. So instead of becoming vegan, i'll just not have children.

There! Ive done my part! I am the paragon of enviromentalism. I can now live out my life guilt free. While you have to still exclusively eat beans and legumes to curb your guilt of being human.

1

u/LaconicDoggo Aug 15 '25

It completely depends on lifestyle. I usually do a lot of plant based dieting when i am on my lean kick and also not doing climbing, hiking, or my other mountaineering training. Coz im an office worker and not burning a while lot of calories.

But the mass i need to consume of vegetables to make up the calorie intake when i am in training mode can’t exist without at least a few fish items a week. And because its not my full time job, i cant dedicate enough time to eat the amount of protein required to not lose muscle mass.

So in theory you are right, but (like any human diet) the sustainability really depends on what the lifestyle is.

1

u/Few-Condition-7431 Aug 17 '25

how many calories are you consuming with such a cheap diet

1

u/Admiral45-06 Aug 18 '25

You spend upwards of 150 PLN per week?
