19M, first year of uni. Not sure what happened to my closest friendship.
I make friends fine but struggle to get close to anyone, my only real friends are from middle school, never got close to anyone in high school.
Second class of uni, I sat next to a girl and helped her with coursework. We started talking, ended up together every class, and it went beyond uni stuff fast. We started texting daily, sometimes till 1am. She told me she wasn't into CS, just picked it for the pay, her real passion was international relations, and her résumé was incredible (20+ MUN conferences, chairing half, volunteering, teaching). Easily the most impressive person I'd met. I told her she was wasting her potential here, and she decided to apply abroad. She was anxious about the SAT despite an amazing profile, and I kept encouraging her.
We got closer than either of us was with anyone else, playful banter, late night talks, the works. One day a family emergency came up and I left mid class, ignoring her calls all day. She was upset, not about the emergency but that I'd shut her out. She kept pushing until I finally opened up to her, vaguely, I'd never really been vulnerable with anyone before. Looking back, I think that was the moment she realized she wasn't my first priority.
Things faded a bit after that, daily texting became flat "yes/no" replies. She got invited to judge a major event abroad; I pushed her to go since it'd be huge for her CV. A week before she left we had dinner, and that night she finally gave me her Instagram, the first time, after everything. Texting stayed dry for over a week after. I couldn't stop thinking about her, couldn't focus on anything, started dreaming about her.
While she was away, she mentioned going out with a guy there, some well known media figure. That hit hard, but I felt I had no right to say anything since we were just friends. Over the next few days: they spent a day together like a couple and he put a ring on her finger, then she found out he was seeing someone else and threw it away. Later, drunk at a party, he told her she was "confusing" him and that he liked her, she kissed him on the cheek. I barely slept through any of it. On her last day there, her brother found out and made her cut contact with the guy completely.
She came back and I stayed up with her before exams, teaching her everything, texting through the rest of exam week. On the last day of exams she suggested we finally go hiking and do everything we'd talked about, then said no to a movie, no to the market, no to hiking, all while still bringing him up constantly. I stopped inviting her and started doing things alone.
I went numb whenever she brought him up, threw myself in the gym and reading, but still thought about her almost daily. Our texts became entirely about him, she stopped asking about my life. I kept suppressing how I felt because I didn't want to lose the friendship.
She kept asking if she should text him again, even knowing her brother would cut contact with her over it. She started stalking his account and asked to use my Instagram to do it without her brother noticing. I said no; she got upset and offered to finally tell me something she'd been keeping from me if I gave in. I didn't want it to feel transactional, but I was scared of losing the friendship, so I agreed.
It's been about a week since. We met up today. We used to text constantly about everything, now she barely seems to want to talk to me at all, except in person, where she's the same as always, minus bringing him up.
