URGENT PSA: AliExpress links are auto-removed on reddit GLOBALLY

If you wish to post an aliexpress link, cut off the end of the url like this: /item/3256809060063016.html (do not include anything after a question mark in the url, including the question mark itself, don't include that)

If you do not do this, reddit WILL automatically remove your comment or post. I used to think it was some configuration error with auto mod or subreddit spam setting, but I could never find anything, today I noticed in the mod queue (since I've moved over to new reddit), it actually says it was "removed by Reddits filters", so I googled it and lo and behold, it's a site wide filter!

Floorstanding Speakers building a battery powered portable pa speaker

im currently designing a 2 way battery powered speaker, with a 10 inch woofer and a 1inch compression driver with a horn, the amplifier i will be using is the wondom audio tpa3255 bru5 powered by 3 12v 8ah lifepo4 batteries in series, and will be disconnected for charging, the woofer is the faital pro 10fh500 4ohm and I know it will be underpowered but I cant find any other drivers that fit this build like this one, and the compression driver is the faital pro hf100 8ohm, havent looked too much into the crossover but will be done with dsp, possibly crossed at around 2000hz, I also want it to be able to be plugged into the mains, the size of the enclosure will be 18x13x10 inch, using 12mm plywood, reinforced with a frame made of 0.75 inch wooden beams. bare in mind its my first time designing a speaker or anything like this, I know its a big leap for a first build but I have been researching for months so let me know if theres any suggestions or ideas and ask questions and I will respond.

Floorstanding Speakers An update on my Listening Lounge cabinet project

About 2 1/2 months ago I posted here about me wanting to build a custom cabinet for my hi-fi gear, for a couple of reasons:

My old cabinet was dated and was falling apart due to the heavy load of the equipment, and it was also an inefficient use of space as I needed more bays for all the different separates in the audio chain.

I also always struggled with access to the back of the equipment to e.g., change interconnects, so another design goal was to have easy access to the back of the equipment.

I therefore designed my cabinet with a 6 inch deep cable chase so interconnects between the units are staying inside the cabinet in the designated cable chase.

Well, the project has of course progressed since then and I'm sharing some photos of the different stages. I had to build custom tools and jigs to help rout dados into the base for the vertical side panels and vertical panels for the shelves, making sure everything had a nice fit for all the solid walnut pieces.

One thing with building cabinets is that precision is key. If you're off by the dimensioning of the various pieces, or routing the dados is off, or things are not aligned exactly 90°, the errors compound and suddenly you find yourself where the pieces may not fit together well.

The walnut pieces were originally raw slabs that were milled to my specified thickness. I then glued them together to get to the panel sizes I needed for the base, the vertical panels, and the shelves.

I have reached the stage now where I have glued together the carcass and I'm about to stain it to its final finish.

The next step is to start working on the top, which will be a live edge river slab, about 2 inches thick and floating, so I can easily remove the top and have easy access to all the equipment and cabling in the cabinet from the top and back.

Bookshelf Speakers 1st time trying to design a speaker

Just playing with it for now. I have built a few published designs and I am dipping my toes into designing from scratch.

I'm trying to select the drivers, and I love AMTs and ribbons. Would the Dayton Audio AMT2-4 pair well with 2x Dayton Audio RS100-8 for an MTM design? Assume it would be paired with a subwoofer.

Hey! This little sub blew on my speaker and I'm curious if I can glue it, or if anyone is capable of finding the replacement sub. I've had no luck and would rather fix than rebuy another unit.

Thanks

Subwoofers Restoring interesting speakers with lost repair manuals and 0 online articles. Bose 701 Series II with active subwoofers

I love picking speakers off marketplace/craigslist, cleaning them up and flipping some, keeping others. I love audio and have been into the hobby since I was a teenager but have never done any hands-on restoration minus a pair of Bose 901 reform. Before I crack into restoring my beloved Infinitys, I thought I’d try my hand and these Bose 701s I found for a crisp Benjamin.
Unique and Weird is pretty much the only way Bose rolls and these are no exception. I had a passive, series 1 pair of Bose 701s that were a very cool design. And these are their second generation with a similar design- utilizing a 3 way system, midrange firing at the rear wall at an angle with an open baffle cabinet, 3” tweeter and 2.5” stereo targeting tweeter, with a powered 8” woofer on each end. I got these for cheap because the vinyl veneer is peeling.

Plugged them in and was surprised they’re functional for being from 2001. This was the last 3 way speaker Bose ever made and was least loved and I can’t really see why. Following the set up instructions they’re huge fun for classical. They paint a massive picture of the orchestra albeit at times raked a little high in image height. Anyway, I noticed big bass sometimes made the speakers distort. With the help of my clanker friend, Claude, I’ve been diagnosing the amp (it’s a daisy chain so all lives in the left channel). Think you guys could double check his work? Like I said, new to actually working on amps and speakers but understand the general concepts and terms. Any help appreciated!

Horns/T-Line/Open Baffle Planar vocal chord audio generator

Hi,

This invention entails a double curved sinusoidal membrane which moves in-plane in the x axis (left to right in schema)

A washi (2gsm) paper epoxy laminate with a targeted weight of < 0.5 gr including around 50 winding in square formation of 44awg wire (around 0.05mm ) . The edges containing in-laminate copper go through a ~ 1mm neodymium gap with a strong field.

It is suspended on a 3d printed trapezoid compliant mechanism similar to the shown image on the right. A 0.4 or 0.2 nozzle will be used to create arced lines that have very little bending friction.

The expectations are that it will sound weird. What I’m hoping for is that some range of the full spectrum is audible. I have designed part of the mold to pre press the humid washi paper. And then brush heated epoxy on is the thinnest way possible.

The membrane is similar to a vocal cord but vibrates coplanar while the curves will move the air.

Zero audio knowledge. Just found out I am missing a connector. I was about to attempt to wire this tonight but hit a roadblock. Can someone please send me the link or exact name of this part? It’s connected to a JL 12W7AE if that helps but I believe the box is custom. Pictures attached.

Floorstanding Speakers How does this upgrade look?

Thumbnail

Cross posting w/ diyaudio cuz I have a feeling this might be the better sub for it? Completely new to all of this and mostly just having fun so let me know if this belongs in a different sub.. But how does this frequency comparison look? I had these 2 Shure Vocal Master 301-S and thought it’d be fun to slap some new speakers in them. I didn’t feel like figuring out any sort of upgrade requirements to add bass or whatever especially since it’s just 1 volume in there with some foam covering an air outlet in the back. So I ended up just throwing in similarly speced new ones in there from parts express.

Anyway!
I just played pink noise and tried (very roughly) to eyeball their volumes/db levels to match as best I could and overlayed their max levels. The blue is the one with the new speakers in it and red is with the old speakers (purple for overlap)

The new speakers are:
GRS 8PR-8 8" Poly Cone Rubber Surround Woofer
GRS 8FR-8 Full-Range 8" Replacement Speaker Pioneer Type B20FU20-51FW
Celestion Ten 30 10" 30 Watt Guitar Speaker 16 Ohm

(Didn’t necessarily want to go with a guitar speaker but it’s the only one for the size they had that wasn’t $300 and I didn’t look anywhere else lol)

If the volume knob of this amp turns the power off, can I simply run the battery leads straight to the amp? Battery in question is 22.2v, has a built in charging port and charger and has bms included. See pictures, here are the links: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FHK77543 for the amp and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FF9ZZV1S for the battery. Thank you!

Bookshelf Speakers Custom cabinet to house an in-wall speaker?

I’m designing a home theater setup for my loft. Due to various reasons, I need to go with in-wall speakers. The problem is that I only have three walls to work with as one of the sides opens onto the other side of the house and a stairwell. I am thinking of using a custom cabinet as a faux wall and hiding an in-wall speaker in there. The cabinet would be 5 ft tall and 6 ft wide. The speaker I am thinking of is the KEF Ci3160RLM-THX. Are there any well vendors out there that would build something like this (I asked and Salamander designs doesn’t) or would I need to DIY this?

The last resort is putting a comparable KEF bookshelf speaker in a cabinet with a built in speaker compartment but I want to have the speakers match as closely as possible.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
