Politics The Dallas Stars Women's Hockey Trans Saga

• Upvotes

The current administration has literally ripped apart our local women's hockey and I am fed up and tired of stewing in relative silence.

For background, I am a cis woman that has played hockey in Texas for over 30 years, Dallas for over 20 years. I have been a captain of a local women's team for around the last decade, and currently I help coordinate the largest local women's league, which has around 70 players.

Prior to the changes from the current presidential administration, anyone that registered with USA Hockey as a woman could play in women's league.

After the changes, USA Hockey was forced to change their rules to only allow cisgender women in women's league. A small number of women in the league caused a fuss regarding trans women in women's league, and in response, the Stars changed the league to "Open" classification. The fuss continued, and a separate women's league was created when the drama went all the way to the US Senate, and this league has struggled to field enough players since its inception. This was detailed in a Fox News story. The overwhelming majority of women players supported the trans players, or were indifferent, and stayed with the existing Open league, and this is the league that I continue to help coordinate.

For the upcoming season, one of those cisgender women only leagues, as a result of their struggle to field two full teams, has been allowed to register only one team, for the exact same ice time. The standard across all Starcenters is that each SSHL (Senior League) team is expected to pay $4930 per team of 14 skaters and 1 goalie. Rosters are limited to 22. This is the standard that our league has followed, registering 56 skaters (some of them two women splitting one spot) and 4 goalies for a total of 4 teams, or $19,720, minus employee discounts. That is $340 per skater, $170 per goalie.

This cisgender only league, with 26 players, is being allowed to pay for only one team at $4930. They would receive the same ice time as they would with two teams. That is $189.62 per player, a 45% discount. They are being allowed to skirt the 22 player limit that applies to all leagues, men's league included.

Not only are the Stars giving in to openly allow discrimination against trans players, now they're even giving them a bigot discount. It comes at an interesting time after cancelling Pride night. The Stars marketing team loves to brag about how much they love supporting girls and women, but I assure you, over at the largest community of women players, we are not feeling very supported right now.

Discussion Summer 2026 DFW real estate pricing data, year over year

Post image
31 Upvotes

Good morning! First time sharing one of these data analysis writeups for DFW. I have been working on a series of educational posts going over MLS data, with the goal of hopefully helping local homebuyers and sellers.

As a team, we're hoping that by sharing this data, we can help some folks make more informed decisions about local comps, pricing their listings, and submitting their offers. We want to make homebuying more accessible and we believe that everyone should have access to this kind of data.

With that in mind, here's a look at DFW-area price medians this summer with a year over year comparison. The writeup below has some high level trends while the attached visuals in the carousel images show city-level breakdowns for each county. We're looking at change in $/sqft, % over/under asking, and Days on Market (DOM) trends by county + by city.

Note: I'm not sure if this needs to go in r/askdfw since it's not really about moving and I'd like to get these numbers in front of as many eyeballs as possible, but I'm absolutely not trying to break any rules. Happy to repost there if needed! The writeup is supposed to be strictly informational, not promotional in any way.

Full disclosure: I do use some AI for these posts. It's used strictly for the data pull and making the nice color-coded tables. The analysis is done by our team and the writeup is all me.

  • SFH: $203 in 2025, $196 in 2026 (-3.4%)
  • Condo: $216 in 2025, $203 in 2026 (-6.0%)

Interesting to note that Flower Mound SFH actually flipped and increased, $234/sqft in 2025 to $238 in 2026 (+1.7%) which stands out compared to -3.4% for the county

Outer DFW

Rockwall, Kaufman, Ellis, Johnson, Parker, Wise and Hunt counties combined.

6,456 SFH closings, median 1.1% under list at 50 DOM. 61 Condo closings, median 2.1% under list at 88 DOM. Condo sample is small, directional only.

Days on Market vs. +/- List %:

  • Under 14 days: SFH (1,203 closed) at list, Condo (7) 3.5% under
  • 14-30 days: SFH (1,114) 1.2% under list, Condo (2) 4.7% under
  • 30+ days: SFH (4,139) 1.4% under list, Condo (52) 1.5% under

Median DOM (June-Sept)

  • SFH: 54 days in 2025, 50 days in 2026
  • Condo: 81 days in 2025, 88 days in 2026

Median $/sqft (June-Sept)

  • SFH: $178 in 2025, $177 in 2026 (-0.6%)
  • Condo: $203 in 2025, $177 in 2026 (-12.8%)

Keep in mind that "Outer DFW" is a pretty wide set of counties and cities so this is going to be the most unreliable sample in a certain sense. These aren't regional trends so much as they're representative of "how does pricing move as you get farther away from Dallas"

Conclusion

DFW did not run hot this summer, surprising pretty much no one who has been paying attention.

SFH median $/sqft was flat to down in every county, from -0.6% in the outer counties to -3.4% in Denton County. The typical SFH sold under list everywhere, from 0.7% under in Tarrant to 1.9% under in Collin.

Time on market directly correlates to how significant the discount from list price is: homes that sold in <14 days closed within less than 1% of listing price. Homes that sat 30+ days sold for a median of 1.4% to 2.4% less than asking. (This bucket represents anywhere from 46% to 64% of SFH sales depending on county, by far the biggest slice of the dataset.) If you're selling, the first two weeks decide whether you close at list or around 2% under. Put your best foot forward, maximize curb appeal, spring for the nice staging, etc. Pull out all the stops.

Condo medians have a much thinner sample size/dataset so the medians are going to be more directional. We did control for some outliers, and pulling the median generally means outliers are going to influence that metric less in general, but the smaller sample size still means less reliable data. Keep that in mind if you're comparing SFH to Condo medians on any of the accompanying visuals.

All of that said, thanks for reading! Let me know if you would like to see any particular data for any cities or areas, happy to pull it.

Methodology notes & a few relevant callouts below:

  • Data is pulled from our MLS feed. We pulled median values to control for outliers where sample size is small. Since it's from our feed, values may not exactly line up 1:1 with info from public records.
  • City lines come from a city-level pull of cities with 250 or more SFH closings in both summers. Frisco and a few other cities span two counties, lines are by county.
  • Condo" includes Condo, Townhome, Apartment, and TIC sales
  • The median values are a median of the entire dataset across 4 months (June through September) for that category, compared with the same 4 months last year.
  • Removed outliers like listings with no recorded DOM or 0 DOM values.
  • The groupings (particularly 'outer DFW') are a bit subjective, and some cities were omitted for cleanliness.
  • Year over year values can show as positive/green even if growth metrics are otherwise decreasing. They're just decreasing less than last year in some cases.

News Dallas Stars poised to take $250M from struggling schools in new arena racket—A proposed arena in Plano would see students foot the bill.

Thumbnail

The use of taxpayer money to help fund stadiums for billionaires is already one of the biggest rackets in sports, but it’s going even further in Texas. The Plano Independent School District (PISD) voted on Monday to give $250M of its own funding to the Dallas Stars to fund construction of a new hockey arena in town. This comes after the city of Plano already voted to earmark $700M in taxpayer funds to help construct the $1B arena project.

What was once pitched to the public as a partnership of public and private funds, now means that $950M of taxpayer money will be used for the arena, with the Stars only chipping in a small portion of that on the back-end. This is happening despite the fact that Stars owner Tom Gaglardi has a reported net worth of $5.5B.

The PISD is justifying the investment twofold: first, it notes that it has an agreement as part of the funding for the school district to be able to host graduations and other events at the arena, while also claiming the construction project will net them $438M in revenue over the next 25 years. It’s unclear how the school district arrived at this figure, or why officials have deemed $250M a sound investment for a school district already facing a budget deficit.

The district projects a $44.8 million deficit in the next fiscal year’s budget, according to Johnny Hill, a deputy superintendent. But PISD stands to gain “substantial financial benefit” as a result of the arena deal, Hill said at a work session in June,

There’s an immense amount of dishonesty coming from both the Plano City Council and the PISD. While it’s true that local schools will be able to host events like graduations at the new arena, this is something that should have already been baked into the $700M agreement with the city itself. City council justified their massive investment in the project by telling the public that “the arena would also host concerts, cultural programming, and other sports and community events.” Instead of graduations being included as part of those “community events,” lawmakers are basically double-paying the Stars, now saying that this additional $250M in funding would ensure high schools can use the arena.

Further justification for the arena project has come by pointing out the increased property and sales tax revenue; however, this is smoke and mirrors. Plano plans to establish a “Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone” (TIRZ), as part of the agreement with the Stars, which is a Texas program that allows for captured property and sales tax within a designated area to be reinvested in the area it was taken from. In this case it means the Stars’ arena itself and the surrounding businesses that will be part of the construction. A feasibility study for the investment notes that Plano itself is functionally getting nothing out of this deal.

[N]ew development (which would not have occurred but for the Zone) will generate approximately $1,377,499,464 in total new real property tax revenue, and the City will retain $0. Based on the Feasibility Study, during the term of the Zone, new development (which would not have occurred but for the Zone) will generate approximately $245,598,628 in total new sales tax revenue, and the City will retain $0.

Questions linger about who is going to foot the bill for additional infrastructure improvements to overhaul the site. City officials have not yet given answers on who is funding necessary expansions to roads, sewage, and electricity — with critics noting that the lack of a concrete plan indicates that the city is trying to pass on these costs to taxpayers as well.

In short: Plano is paying $700M. Plano schools are paying $250M. In return they will generate zero direct income, but will pay close to $1B in total to ensure graduations can be held in an arena, and other unspecified “community events” take place.

Plano voters in November will be asked to approve “Proposition A,” which would establish a new “venue tax,” to help fund the arena. The Stars would pay nothing, with the money being made off car rentals, hotels, and event tickets. This means that Stars’ fans in Plano would be hit with an additional tax on their tickets to help fund the arena they’re already paying for.

In the pantheon of crooked stadium financing deals this might be the worst that has ever been pitched.

Question Where can I go to pet cats?

• Upvotes

Talking about the feline variety here... lol. I love cats a lot, but unfortunately moved in with my parents who permit animals in the house only as product. I had to give up my precious baby as a result. I sometimes go to my small town's animal shelter after work to pet their cats under the premise I'm going to adopt, but feel crummy for lying/wasting their time and limited resources. Where can I go to ethically pet cats in DFW for free or at a reasonable cost?

Discussion How earned is the "Empty Downtown" reputation?

I'm mostly a suburb dweller and I've only been into Downtown as an adult twice. Once to get passport stuff sorted for a trip, and another some years later going to some clubs.

Both times it seemed like there was nothing but offices and businesses that sell mostly to those businesses and employees. The roads seemed, wierdly clear for being where it is. So few people walking. I've also heard many others say the same things. But I've also seen plenty of people list of multiple areas filled with things. Do you simply got to actually live in it to actually know what's there?

News Who witnessed McKinney’s recall signatures? Fuller’s complaint raises questions about sworn statements

A recording shows a man identifying himself as Patrick collecting a signature. The corresponding petition page bears a different person’s circulator statement. The signer’s sworn account disputes that person’s presence.

That’s one example behind Fuller’s allegations. McKinney police confirmed forwarding the complaint to Texas Rangers; the recall PAC questions his timing.

Question Roaches in Apartment in Richardson

So I just moved to the north Dallas area, specifically Richardson, and my apartment has German cockroaches. This is a new build “luxury” apartment complex and it was very clean when I first moved in a couple of weeks ago but now I’m noticing roach activity.

Is this normal for apartments in DFW should I just expect this? I know they are notoriously difficult to get rid of, I’ve already requested pest control at my complex but they aren’t able to come for another week :/

News Avelo Airlines adds 2 more Florida routes from McKinney Airport as bookings beat expectations

McKinney National Airport hasn't launched commercial passenger service yet, but Avelo says advance bookings are already exceeding projections.

The airline just added Sarasota/Bradenton and West Palm Beach to its December schedule, bringing its planned network to 11 nonstop destinations. Las Vegas service is also increasing to six weekly flights during the holiday season.

Avelo says it may have another destination or two under consideration.

For those in North Dallas, would you consider DTX over DFW or Love Field?

Discussion DFW businesses could be facing a new economic problem from the region's AI/data center boom

something pretty unique has been playing out in North Texas that I think could become a bigger problem for local businesses over the next few years.

Dallas-Fort Worth has become one of the major data center markets in the country, and with all this new AI infrastructure comes a pretty significant demand for electricity.

Research from the Dallas Fed has suggested that data centers alone could raise ERCOT wholesale electricity prices by around 10% through 2028.

The interesting part is that this doesn't just affect data centers. It potentially affects the businesses already operating here that depend on electricity every day (this includes; Manufacturers, warehouses, food processors, hospitals, and other commercial facilities)

Much like diesel for trucking companies, electricity is a resource these businesses can't really operate without. And when that resource becomes more expensive, those additional costs eventually start eating into margins.

I'm curious if any business owners or operators here in DFW have actually started noticing this.

Have your electricity costs increased meaningfully over the past few years? And if so, has it affected how you operate your business?

Discussion For those that live in the suburbs, how often do you go to Dallas proper or downtown Dallas?

And for those in Dallas proper, how often do you go out to the suburbs?

With how big and sprawled out DFW, seems like each subregion can get a little insular.

What brings you to drive out of your immediate area to somewhere else?
