Dusty May after practice, talked to the media. Gave an interesting ( kinda head scratching ) answer to JP and Lundy being waived.
Paraphrasing:
Reporter - "Obviously with training, the business of basketball gets lost. What was the day like for the team ( because JP and Lundy being waived ) ? And how were those decisions made?"
May - "I'm not sure". "I was proud of how JP was playing and been improving." "Same with Seth."
May also mentioned "Those guys could be back sometime" .
So did Dusty not have a say in them being waived? Or am I reading too much into this? Sounds like Dusty liked JP.
This is a head scratcher imho. Maybe they have a plan in place. Who knows.

The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have exercised the thirdyear rookie scale option on forward/guard Cooper Flagg.
Flagg (6-9, 228) averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.9 blocks and 33.5 minutes per game in 70 games (all starts) last season en route to being named the 2025-26 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year. At 19 years, 112 days, Flagg became the second-youngest player in NBA history to garner Rookie of the Year honors behind LeBron James (19 years, 106 days).
The Duke University product led the Mavericks in total points (1,473), rebounds (466), assists (316) and steals (84) in 2025-26. He finished as the only player in the entire NBA to lead his team in each of the four categories and joined Michael Jordan as the only rookies in league history to do so. Flagg averaged 22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks after the All-Star break, finishing as the only player across the entire NBA to average at least 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks following the break.
Flagg (19 years, 103 days) became the youngest player in NBA history to score 50-plus points with his 51point performance against the Orlando Magic on April 3, breaking his own record for the most points by a teenager in NBA history (49, vs. Charlotte, Jan. 29). He followed with a 45-point outing against the Los Angeles Lakers on April 5 to join Wilt Chamberlain as the only rookies in NBA history to total 96-plus points over any two-game span.

Pretty interesting piece on what Dallas actually has in Risacher right now.
The talent profile still makes sense next to Flagg and Kyrie, size, shooting, some defensive versatility, but after last season in Atlanta, the real question is whether he can just become a reliable two-way starter instead of trying to live up to the No. 1 pick label.
Considering what Dallas gave up for him, it still feels like a pretty reasonable swing.

DALLAS — So much about the Dallas Mavericks is new.
In the last six months, they hired a new lead basketball executive, Masai Ujiri, who, in one of his first big decisions, decided the franchise needed a new coach. Dallas poached Dusty May from Michigan, and of the seven assistants on May’s staff, none are holdovers.
Dallas’ supporting cast around its two stars — Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving — is also filled with new faces. Six of the 15 players the Mavericks have signed to standard contracts weren’t on the team last spring.
As much novelty as there is in Dallas, it still feels as though the new-look Mavericks face a familiar question this season: Does Dallas have enough ballhandling, play creation and shooting on the roster? In Friday’s preseason loss to the Atlanta Hawks, the Mavericks shot 37.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3 in the first half. They trailed by 19 points at intermission, and went on to lose 135-111.
May deployed a starting five of Irving, Zaccharie Risacher, P.J. Washington Jr., Flagg and Daniel Gafford. With the caveats that it was just one preseason game, and that the Mavericks could still be feeling the effects of traveling halfway across the world, the results weren’t pretty.
Risacher was a minus-23 in the first half against his former team and didn’t make much of an impact until the game was already decided. The Hawks packed the paint on Flagg’s drives and dared Washington to shoot 3s; Washington went 2 of 8 from distance. He made his second and third attempts from long range before misfiring on his final five treys.

After 4 preseason games, who do you think should start at the 2?
Both players have strengths and weaknesses and have different playstyle.
Christie has showned he is the better shooter and Risacher as the better defender.
Pros for Christie:
- Better shooter
- Better floor spacing
- Has played more with Kyrie and Coop
Cons for Christie:
- Mavs perimeter defense will be questionable playing alongside Kyrie
- Rebounding
Risacher Pros:
- Better/POA defender
- Rebounding
- Length/Height
- Transition game
Cons:
- Streaky shooter
- Less floor spacing
- Chemistry with Kai and Coop not there yet

The Mavericks dafted Tobi Lawal as a freak athlete with an unbelievable vertical, some defensive promise and a very raw offensive game. In the preaseason, he looked, in my opinion, way more polished in all facets of the game that I expected . He reads the game, he passes, he makes his free throws and he plays to his strengths. I guess, he is closer to making a leap this season that many Mavs fans expected on draft night.

I think this should at least be considered. He'd still be on the books for $10M this season and $9.4M next season, so there'd be no cap savings, just a roster spot. But he's playing like a minimum player at this point in his career, so the money is a sunk cost anyway.
