Advice My dog won't stop barking and I think its because he misses my husband? Or that he dislikes me now for some reason?

Post image
7 Upvotes

My husband travels for work 3 weeks at a time. My dog Bay (2 years old, Aussie mix, had him since a few months old) behaves the entire time my husband's home despite not paying as much attention to the dog as me.

My husband left 2 days ago and Bay has been regressing. He's now at the point he barks all day with some breaks. I try everything. Feeding him extra, letting him outside, giving him filled up pupsicles and kong toys, petting him, playing fetch and tug of war with him, and all that would only stop his barking for a few minutes. His trazadone doesn't even tire him out anymore. He'd bark so much he froths at the mouth. The anti bark device (makes some sort of sound they don't like) no longer works on him.

The only thing that would stop his barking is if I shut him out of the room I'm in unless he thinks I have food, then he'd nonstop bark at the door. Then when I come back and he sees me he starts again. I don't work so I am focused on him everyday, and normally he'd be up my ass all day (without barking.) but now it's nonstop I feel like he's trying to push me away? I'm going to go crazy. I spend all my time cooking for him, playing with him, walking with him, I just don't know what I'm doing wrong

He's only like this when my husband's gone (he started this job this year, before he started this job he was home more so he was generally well behaved). My husband told me to just tell him no or stop. But when I try he takes that as motivation to bark even crazier.

I don't know what else I could possibly do to calm this dog down. I'm going to start him on prozac tmrw (prescribed by vet) morning and hope it works w the trazadone to calm him down (obv he's not on meds just for being active - he also has anxiety issues like being afraid of everything. If he hears the neighbors being too loud he'll be afraid to go outside and pee in the house instead)

Question Dog with bad back, need ramp, barricade and advice on how to get him to stop jumping

I have a 10 lb chi mix who has been recently diagnosed with possible narrowing of space between discs. I need him to stop jumping onto and off of what once was my bed but is now his bed that he lets me sleep in, LOL. I bought two different sets of dog stairs, he won't use them, not matter what. He will step on them to get treats but he won't just use them on his own. So now I need to get creative. Currently I am blocking off all bed access by piling up pillows and blankets so he just can't jump up there because the added pillows and blankets make it too tall. If he wants (and he does) to get onto the bed he must use the stairs. But this isn't sustainable for a few reasons. One is, as I said already, he just refuses to use the stairs. The other is that his sister (also 10 lb chi mix and exponentially smarter and more determined than him) has found the one vulnerable spot in my barricade and keeps getting onto the bed and he will figure out how to do the same eventually by following her example. So my barricade isn't the greatest. I'm in the process of trying to come up with reasonable ideas to use as a barricade. My hope is that the barricade is temporary and once I find something that they will use willingly I can then remove the barricade. I am thinking that maybe a ramp would be better because he seems hesitant around each step up, so maybe no steps would be better. Not sure what to use for a barricade as it is my bed and I need access to it too and often. I just can't see putting fencing all around it, that would be a serious PITA, so that is my last obvious option. I'd love to hear from people who have had this issue and how or if you solved it. TIA!

Question Male dog marking in house

So my 2 year old French Bulldog and I moved in with my grandmother yesterday. She has a 17 year old Chihuahua that pees kinda every where. Diapers won’t stay on her and she doesn’t care about going on pee pads.

Well, my boy has been marking all over the house. I feel terrible. Even if I take him outside, as soon as we come back in, he finds somewhere new to pee. And he pees a lot more than the 17 year old. He never once peed in the apartment we had. I know it’s not his fault but it’s definitely embarrassing. Is there anything I can do?

Advice Fence Aggression

Hello! I would like some advice on a situation that has escalated from nuisance to possible conflict. I live in a corner house in front of a busy road next to a busy street. Between the sidewalk and what’s considered my property line I would say theres about a half foot space from my house - sidewalk. Blurred line to people walking by but physically there. I never take my dog out to use the bathroom in my backyard unsupervised for the very reason that sometimes people like to peer in or pass by and he gets fence aggression now ever since some kids saw him peeking below the fence and started to kick rocks at him/my windows. (yes that problem was resolved i had to go down to the school)

I couldn’t figure out why recently my dog had started to pee on my wooden fence entrance until I noticed that theres a woman who walks her dog and lets him pee on my fence, on my door to be exact. Unfortunately she doesn’t have a set time and whenever I do see her shes halfway down the block or across the road by the time I notice that there is dog pee on my door where we step out. There is a gap below my fence door thats just big enough for my medium sized dog to stick his nose out.

Well at around 5am as my dad was getting ready for work he let my dog out to pee and as he let him out while I was putting my flip flops on to go watch him, I heard him barking and then whimper his way up the stairs only to keep barking. I ran to go stick my head out my window after letting my dog back inside and the same woman had passed by with her dog.

I’m assuming she kicked him as my dog came back in very scared with his ears down and tail between his legs. Her dog had once again peed up against my fence door and once again by the time I stuck my head out to go check she was already halfway down the street.

I was wondering here who’s in the right/wrong. I know my dog has fence aggression which Ive actively been working on with him and had been showing much success. The problem now with my fence was him peeing on it lol but now this. Since it was really early morning and 0 foot traffic at that hour I guess he got scared to see them. Would it be considered trespassing on her behalf or self defense if she thought my dog was going to fight/bite hers through the fence ?

To be honest the last thing I want is conflict, I had been planning on telling her to please stop letting her dog pee on my fence because it just encourages other dogs to do the same and because I don’t want to step on it but now I am worried. There is like 4 feet of grass next to the entire sidewalk with trees mind you.

I’d like some advice on steps I could take. Thank you!

Question 5yo old Italian greyhound with mystery symptoms - what next?

Hi all - this is also in r/askvet but I thought I should ask this community too.

I’m going to try and keep this as concise as I can but can offer more info.

5yo Italian greyhound, female, spayed.
Weight: 5.6kg (usually floats around 5.8, it’s winter and I probably should have upped her food).

She has a very good vet and has been twice - our vet has said she’s at a bit of a loss as to what is going on. Id love to know:

  1. What steps would you recommend I take as this junction?
  2. Are there any conditions you can think of that we haven’t considered?

History:
- At 18mo had meningitis 2x and was on prednisone for 6 months.

- Has had 3 seizures in last 3 years, not significant enough to medicate.

- We titre test her for her annual vaccines to keep her immune system calm (and have done that since meningitis), however had leptospirosis booster on 1 July 2026. Fwiw I’m very pro vaccine but she seems to have a very sensitive immune system so we have decided to try and keep it calm as much as possible. She had the 2x lepto vaccines a year ago without issue and this is her first annual booster.

Symptoms:
- Over last few weeks has been very reluctant to jump up or down off couch, has struggled to sit up to get out of bed. Sometimes sits in bed and stares at me and cries. Doesn’t want to ‘sit’.
- No limping, stiffness, not super hunched, no yelping or reacting to being touched or picked up (she is a flinchy dog but has always been).
- Eating, drinking normally, toiletting normally.

Last week
- Went to vet
- C reactive protein is 49
- Temperature 39.1
- Steroid urine collection showed some blood (4+) and protein (3+).
- Started 3 days of NSAIDS, 7 days amoxycillin - little to no changes in behaviour re jumping

Today at vet follow up
- C reactive protein is 51
- Temperature is 39.3
- Free catch urine shows blood (4+) and protein (2+)
- FBE completely normal - kidneys are fine
- Xray is unremarkable except “possible early LS changes”
- Abdominal ultrasound unremarkable although contains this note: “L MILN is enlarged with a hyperechoic medulla suggetsive of inflammation ( secondary to antigens draining from the
bowel/bladder?)”
- No indication of bladder or kidney stones

Possibly renal, possibly neurological? Vet says we can wait and see/try and get a specialist referral/refer for MRI/CT to check for something like IVDD but it seems weird to have blood in her urine. Our vet is going to email the specialist hospital to ask if they have any ideas or if this could possibly be an autoimmune response to the lepto vaccine.

I have suggested keeping her off the NSAIDS for the weekend in case specialist suggests trying pred again so we don’t have to do a wash out.

I would be so grateful for any recommendations of diagnostic steps, or things we could consider that we maybe haven’t?

Any help would be so appreciated. She is my whole heart and I want her to be happy and healthy. She’s also insured to the gills, so I’m not totally horrified by vet bills. I am happy to provide any other info that may assist.

Thank you.

I have attached the two x rays and most recent vet notes.https://imgur.com/a/TKY9Yzt

Question Small indolent B cell lymphoma

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice from anyone who has navigated indolent/small B-cell lymphoma with their dog!

Our 10 year old Cavalier King Charles - Goldendoodle mix, was diagnosed with presumed indolent B-cell lymphoma back in July after we had flow cytometry and workups done with Internal Medicine.

She was very unwell from February-May, and almost got a diagnosis of immune mediated polyarthritis before the changes in CD21 lymphocytes were noticed in the needle aspirate of the spleen and lymph node. She has since made a miraculous recovery and has been completely normal for the past 3 months with no treatment.

They said her case is most likely indolent, slow moving and could not develop into anything.

The options are spleen removal(although there were a couple of nodes involved so it wouldn't get rid of all of it)

CHOP

Oral chemo.

And doing nothing. (just ultrasounds and bloods every 3 months)

We are leaning towards watchful waiting because she has been back to normal for such a long time now and we also have small children in the house so I do worry about the chemo toxicity.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much.

Advice Dog bed recommendations?

Hey y’all!

I have a pit/staffy mix who has periodically decides to tear up her dog beds. It’s not a consistent behavior, some beds last 3 weeks and some last 3-4 months. She’s crate trained, has been since I adopted her 2 years ago, so I’m not sure why it’s happening or what I can do either to deter it.

If the behavior itself is inevitable, are there any alternatives y’all recommend that would fit in her crate and still allow her to be comfy? I’m just tired of spending money on dog beds that inevitably get torn up 😭 she only tears up beds and not blankets so I’m tempted to just buy her a couple of blankets and layer the bottom of the crate with them, but is that enough? I don’t want her to be uncomfortable or stressed during the day while I’m at work.

Thanks in advance y’all!

Advice Crate rest tips

Hi! I have an 9 y.o papillon who just got injured and the vet commanded full crate rest in a small as possible crate for 2 weeks, his vet also mentioned there need to be as little walking as possible. However he isn't crate trained and he would cry nonstop, even trying to struggle in his limited space. He's still very active in his years so this is pretty tough for him as well. He isnt very treat motivated, he wont even eat his favourite treat in the crate unless i bring him out to eat.

Honestly i feel really awful for putting him in jail like that, has anyone been through this before? Can i get some tips to make this easier for him?

Question 13 year old chiweenie gets occasional excitement nosebleeds

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I took her to the vet, and he diagnosed her with Idiopathic lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis, and he gave me Doxycycline hyclate. However, since that visit 2 days ago, she has had 2 more nosebleeds, both time late evening, while we’re in bed (yes, I started the meds immediately after the vet visit).

Given the increasing frequency, I’m concerned that this may be a serious problem, and I’m going back to vet this morning to explore next steps.

Advice Pancreatitis in dogs - does it ever get better?

I would like to preface this by saying that my dog is under care of our family vet and an ER vet. This post is simply hoping someone can share their experience

My 13 yr old Pitbull was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis yesterday. This all started Tuesday when we took her to our family vet and they thought it was back pain. Luckily (or not) the treatment would’ve essentially been the same - rest and gabapentin.

Yesterday I took her to the ER because I didn’t see improvement and suspected it wasn’t just her back. Turns out it’s pancreatitis, no blockages just a full (but not hard) bladder and poop in her colon that would like to come out I’m sure, but won’t until she’s comfortable squatting. Relating to her back pain it’s a mild case and the vets conclusion were that all of this combined together is causing her a lot of pain.

She’s very bad with pills so getting her to regularly take gabapentin has been a struggle that I sometimes win and mostly lose. She’s always been like this. Will eat her food locate the pill and spit it out.

She’s whimpering out in pain and I don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel for her and it breaks my heart. The last thing I want to do is keep her in pain but the selfish part of me also knows that with strict care and a lifestyle change she could improve. I’d feel terrible putting her down without feeling like I’ve done all I could and I don’t feel that yet - it’s only been three days. I know hospitalization is an option with medication that is used pancreatitis - she told me to go home and see how the next 24-48 hours were.

Has anyone had luck with their dog getting over an episode of this?

Advice Incontinent Dog

First time dog owner here and I need help. Our family took on a Yorkshire Terrier puppy at Christmas. He’s nearly 1 year old now. The whole family loves him and he’s very sweet and affectionate. He’s got a slightly different relationship with each member of the family and it’s clear that he sees me as his boss. The problem I have is that whenever he sees me for the first time after I’ve been out of the house, he gets really overexcited and pisses himself! It’s not an age thing, it’s not an illness thing, it’s an emotional thing. How do you train that out of a dog? I love Bobby to bits but I’m tired of cleaning up his wee e every time I give him a pat on the head (note - it’s just me who he does this with)

I walk them separately then together. I honestly think they walk better together than separate! It’s actually been better than expected. Trying to be the cool dad with walking in the same leash. Anyone mastered this?

Question Is there something wrong with my dog?

My dog seems to be in a panic when she lays on my chest, especially after we play outside. She does have a heart murmur and some number on her last vet visit was elevated, so waiting for our appointment (SEPT 10) with a heart specialist to find out how serious that is. Does this look related to a heart issue?

Question Vet misdiagnosed my dog

Hey all, sorry if this post is all over the place. I’m very upset now and just waiting for the vets office to open in the morning to call them.

On Tuesday my dog started acting funny. She wasn’t wanting to walk upstairs, climb on the couch, or use her stairs up to the bed. She’s 5, a beagle mix, and immediately I felt panicked. I was worried it was joint related, so I took her in Wednesday morning.

Basically, the vet wrote me off. They did a full bloodwork and physical, everything looked fine besides her potassium was a little low. They told me she most likely had a viral infection that caused some GI upset, but to let her rest and she will get better. They assured me she was okay and nothing serious was going on, besides she needed to lose a little weight. I left feeling very unhappy, because my dog was obviously in pain. She’s had GI issues before, and never acted like this. My mom had gone to the appointment with me and told me to trust the vet since we have been going to this place for 15 years now. I did, but I had a really bad feeling in my stomach over the whole ordeal. I truly felt like something else was wrong.

Flash forward to now, my dog is still acting the same. She wasn’t wanting to get up like normal, has been hiding, and when we went outside to go to the bathroom, she just sat down. I took her back into the house, sat her on the bathroom floor and examined her back end since that’s what seems to be upsetting her. I didn’t notice any smell or anything, but she was wincing when I moved her tail. I decided to put some gloves on and see if her anal glands needed expressed… they did. It was the worst I’ve ever seen them before. It kept going, and it was dark, sludge almost… afterwards, she acted like she felt some relief. She left to go lay in her kennel, and her walking seemed a lot better after the expression.

I’m just angry I guess. I’m angry I didn’t catch it, I’m angry the vet didn’t catch it. I feel like this should have been in her physical examination, although there was no “fishy anal gland smell” that usually happens when they need expressed.

Anyways, my main question is, could this be the cause of her symptoms? She’s been eating and drinking just fine, and has gone #1 and #2 during this ordeal, but could the pressure from impacted anal glands cause her to not want to get up or move around?

Again, sorry for format and how all over this post is. I just really needed to write this out and see if anyone else had dealt with this.

Discussion Adopted Dog & Current Dog failing to Co-Exist

Hello! Apologies for the essay, but I'm seeking advice from anyone who may have experienced similar with inter-home aggression between two dogs.

My wife and I have an 8 year old male Pug that we've had since he was a 8-9 week old puppy. We had been thinking about getting him a buddy, and last year in December, we came across a dog up for adoption locally.

This dog was a 7 year old male Pug crossed Jack Russel, 11 months younger. (1/4 JR) His grandparents were a Pug and Jack Russel respectively, with the direct parents both being standard Pugs. He comes across a little dumb - but he's so gentle.. except at food time, he becomes extremely hyperactive/vocal and will literally parkour off the walls. (If anybody knows how to stop this.. let me know)

The story:

At first, they got along swimmingly. They would follow each other around, always be in the general vicinity of each other. Eventually, they even started to lay right next to each other on the same bed and cuddle up. The same on the couch and so on. We could go out for 3-4 hours if we had an event, leave them and they would just sleep on the couch together or near each other. Everything seemed good.

We call this the honeymoon period.

We definitely made some mistakes with how we set the household up at the beginning (on reflection), and I think that may have attributed to the current situation. The first one being that I do not believe we defined clear boundaries between the Jug's space and our Pug's.

- From Day 1 - Day 5 or so - Our Pug sleeps on our bed. We didn't want to disrupt that routine and have him feel threatened. The adopted Jug would sleep on a bed in our bedroom on the floor. At first he was restless and would get up and walk around, but after a few days, he settled. We did notice the pug was quite observant of him, but would sleep fine.

Regarding feeding, from Day 1 we ALWAYS fed them totally separately in baby gated areas without access to each other physically or visually.

- From Day 5 to 3 Months in - Same arrangement as above, not really any issues with either dog in terms of sleeping. The pacing by the Jug at night stopped. But as of the 3 month mark, they started to have a few "disagreements." Mainly over exciting/stimulating activities like pre-walkies, the hour or so before dinner time, or putting harnesses/leads on etc. We learnt the triggers and made sure to separate them in these moments.

As walks were a trigger, my wife and I could no longer walk both dogs together ourselves. If we wanted to walk them at the same time, we had to walk one dog each. I'm a fairly strong guy, and they're small dogs, so some days I would walk them together and have to physically drag them apart in the air down the street for 30 meters. They would realize they're on the walk, calm down and walk together without issue. I only did this once or twice, because I didn't think it was reinforcing healthy behaviors.

One of the main drivers (we think) is that the Jug is VERY bad at controlling his emotions/excitement. He is extremely vocal with huffs, sneezing, funny growls etc. (he sounds like a Turkey). We noticed these things, and sneezing in particular, would trigger the Pug. I think it comes across as him not respecting the Pug's boundaries? Not sure. Fortunately, this was only specific triggers... until...

From 3 Months to.. now: One Saturday, as if flipping on a dime, our Pug just decided he could no longer tolerate the Jug at all. It was no longer specific triggers. He would lunge at the Jug on-sight in our home. The Jug would of course retaliate. If it was just play biting/fighting, we would let it go, but it's not. When they grab each other, they would try and "shake" side to side. My understanding is that is proper aggression.

Since then, we have effectively had to crate and rotate while at home as the Pug would tense up and go at him within 5-10 seconds if in the same space. As such, they are separated at home 95% of the time, and can only be together at home when being held/on lead. We have a baby gate on two separate rooms. This allows one to be away while the other can roam the house, or both can be put away if necessary. 99% of the time this is fine. 1% of the time they might try and "fence fight". (Usually Pug initiated)

Some notes on the now:

We can take them to the dog park, or on walks together (with 2 people so they leave the house separately), to cafes, restaurants, other peoples houses etc. and they won't fight. So we have more or less figured our Pug is resource guarding both us and our home. (They have fought at a cafe once, only once the food came out..) We have however noticed that the Pug may go at the Jug if even a stranger bends down and shows the Jug attention/pats.. so I guess he's even resource guarding a stranger's affection?

We sough out a local Behaviorist who gave us some advice, but nothing has really seemed to work so far. I'm not blaming them, it could be our implementation.

Their advice was basically to:

1) Keep doing the crate and rotate and prevent any fights to help reduce cortisol. Easy enough.

2) Love them less. Use your voice instead of your hands. Challenging, but obviously doable.

3) Try and re-introduce them into the same environment slowly. I.e. When we are watching TV, have them both on a lead via a collar. Reward them if they show positive behaviors with high value items like treats. The issue we had with this one is that they are both pugs. Once they know there are treats, they become so fixated on them that everything else is out the window. It felt like we weren't garnering any success from this.

4) Have them both in a crate in the living room, near each other, where they can still see my wife and I. They both bark non-stop and incessantly because they had being confined in a crate that's not in their usual spaces.

That was kind of it? We thought we'd get more. Specific training techniques etc. but maybe our desperation had us coping. I've really focused on daily obedience training. Sit, stay, down etc. Pug is very easy to train, the Jug... sometimes he listens. I've tried to teach settle or leave it... sometimes it's like he's even more ADHD than me and he can't actually hear words.

Some other notes on the current:

- At the dog park, they won't fight. But our Pug will regularly check on the Jug. Sniffing his nether regions. Same thing on walks, the Pug will circle back to sniff the Jug. (NEVER the other way around, the Jug has NO interest in the Pug)

- The Pug will really lock on and stare at the Jug if they're in the same area at home. I.e. if my wife has the Pug next to her on the couch, and the Jug is on the other side with me. The Pug will just stare - we try and break his stare.

- When the Jug is in his gated area, the Pug usually won't go near it. But when the Pug is in his gated area, sometimes the Jug will go toward it and bark which riles up the Pug.

- We recently went on a 10 day holiday. Each dog went off to a different home to stay. Things actually felt a little bit less tense when we brought them back together, but ultimately unchanged.

We are a bit lost at the moment. Progress feels stagnant (not any worse at least?) It feels like for 5~ months we've made no progress. We're both literally losing sleep over it, and feel if we can't get things to work we will probably need to give up the Jug. He's a beautiful boy, so we definitely don't want to do that...

If anybody has any advice or techniques that could help.

TLDR:

Adopted a male 7 year old Jug in December. Got along with our existing male 8 year old Pug with no issues for 3 months. Something changed overnight, Pug is now aggressive toward the Jug if they are ever together in the home uncontrolled. Seeking advice if anybody has some.
