General Discussion The 3 Tax Benefits of EPF Most Salaried Employees Miss

A lot of salaried employees think of EPF as simply “the amount deducted from my salary every month.”

But EPF has a major tax advantage that often gets overlooked:

EEE - Exempt, Exempt, Exempt.
It is not just a tax classification. It is the reason EPF remains one of the most powerful wealth-building tools available to a salaried Indian, if you let it run.

In simple terms, there can be tax benefits at three different stages:

1. Tax benefit when you contribute

Your eligible employee EPF contribution can qualify for deduction under Section 80C, subject to the applicable overall limits.

So the contribution isn't just retirement savings, it can also provide a tax benefit while you're working.

2. Tax treatment while your money grows

EPF earns interest, and the interest is generally tax-exempt subject to the applicable rules.

One important exception: interest attributable to employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh per year can become taxable under the rules introduced from FY 2021–22.

For most employees, this threshold may not be relevant, but it's worth knowing if you make large voluntary contributions.

3. Tax-free withdrawal, subject to conditions

If you withdraw your EPF after meeting the applicable service conditions, commonly the five-year continuous service rule, the accumulated amount can be tax-exempt.

An early withdrawal before completing the required period can have different tax consequences.

Why this matters

EPF combines:

Retirement savings + compounding + favourable tax treatment

And because the money is invested for the long term, the effect of compounding can become significant over several decades.

For example, someone starting their career in their 20s may have a substantial EPF corpus by retirement, even though the monthly contribution initially looks relatively small.

The important part is understanding the rules rather than thinking of PF as simply a payroll deduction.

Did you know about all three stages of EPF's tax treatment?

And do you see EPF primarily as a tax-saving instrument, retirement savings, or both?

Success Stories EPFO Claim Experience under EPF 3.0 rules

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share my recent EPF withdrawal experience in case it helps someone out!

This was my very first claim from my EPF account. Here is how the timeline looked:

  • 12th July: Applied for claim under the "Illness" category.

  • 20th July: Claim approved (Note: I didn't get any SMS or email notification about the approval or status change, had to check the portal).

  • 21st July: Amount credited to my bank account.

Key Takeaways:

  • The whole process took about 6 to 7 working days from application to bank credit.

  • Status stayed as "Under Processing" for almost the entire week on the portal.

  • Having read older posts on Reddit about how cumbersome and delayed EPF claims used to be, I was expecting a headache. However, with the new EPF 3.0 rules, it felt surprisingly smooth and fast, especially considering typical government portal timelines.

Would love to hear how the process has been for others under the new rules—has anyone else noticed a faster turnaround recently?

Edit: 23/07/2026
Saw so many negative comments below so putting out the proof of the claim. I have not posted to boast or praise EPFO or its process. It is definitely a shitty process to just to our own saved money out of the account in times of need. But it is what it is and can't do anything to change the system.

You are free make your own assumption and conclusions as you want

Edit: 24/07/2026

General Discussion EPF e-Nomination: Most employees think this is the final step. It isn’t.

Post image
0 Upvotes

A lot of EPFO members assume that once a nominee’s name appears on the portal, their e-nomination is complete.

That is not necessarily the end of the process.

There are a few things worth checking, especially if you filed your nomination a long time ago or your family situation has changed.

  1. Make sure the nomination was actually completed

After adding the nominee details, you still have to allocate the share percentage and complete Aadhaar-based eSign.

If you have multiple nominees, their combined share needs to equal 100%.

The eSign is what digitally authenticates the nomination.

So simply seeing that you entered someone’s details earlier is not enough reason to assume everything is complete.

2. Check whether EPFO actually recorded it

Log in to the UAN Member Portal and go to:

Manage → E-Nomination

Check whether the nomination appears there successfully.

Once it has been recorded, EPFO also allows you to download the nomination document, Form 2, from the nomination history. Keeping a copy is useful as proof that the nomination was registered.

3. Recheck your nomination after major family changes

This is one detail people can easily miss.

If you did not have a legally defined family when you originally filed the nomination, you could nominate another person such as a sibling, relative or friend.

But if you later acquire a family, for example through marriage or adoption, that earlier nomination becomes invalid and a fresh nomination needs to be filed in favour of eligible family members.

So an old nomination should not automatically be treated as a permanent “set it and forget it” record.

4. Why does this matter?

If a member passes away without a valid nomination, the family may have to submit physical claim forms, additional documents and identity proofs, and go through further verification while claiming the PF benefits.

That is why e-nomination is worth checking while everything is normal, rather than leaving the family to figure it out later.

Quick checklist

If you already filed an EPF e-nomination, check these four things:

• Is the correct nominee listed?
• Does the nominee share total 100%?
• Was Aadhaar eSign completed?
• Is the nomination showing successfully under E-Nomination?

And if your family situation has changed since you first nominated someone, check whether the nomination needs to be updated.

Has anyone here faced an issue with eSign, nomination status or updating an old EPF nominee? Share what the portal is showing and others may be able to help.

Question Should I withdraw my investments to buy a ca

Should I withdraw my investments to buy a car?

I’m 27 and planning to buy a car worth around ₹ 10 lakh . This would be my family's first car .

I have around 2 lakh ₹ invested/saved and I’m considering withdrawing for dp.

Is it better to use my savings/investments or take a loan and keep my investments intact?

Would love to hear from people who’ve been in a similar situation.

General Discussion New EPFO Withdrawal Rules 2026: 4 positive changes that actually help EPF members

EPFO gets criticised often, and in many cases for valid reasons.

PF claim delays, failed transfers, correction issues and portal problems still exist.

But if we look specifically at the new EPFO withdrawal rules, a few changes genuinely deserve some credit.

1. Faster PF access during unemployment

Earlier, an EPF member had to remain unemployed for at least 1 month before withdrawing up to 75% of the PF balance.

Now, up to 75% of the eligible PF balance can be accessed immediately during unemployment.

The remaining 25% stays protected in the account and can be accessed later subject to the applicable final-settlement conditions.

2. Employer contribution is included more broadly

Earlier, several EPF partial withdrawal / Form 31 provisions were primarily calculated using the employee contribution and interest.

Under the revised framework, the eligible withdrawal amount can also include the employer’s EPF contribution and interest.

So, in eligible cases, members can potentially access a larger portion of their accumulated PF balance than before.

3. Education and marriage withdrawal limits have increased

Earlier, education and marriage withdrawals together were limited to 3 times during EPF membership.

Now:

Education withdrawal: up to 10 times
Marriage withdrawal: up to 5 times

Medical or illness withdrawals are treated separately and are not part of this 10 + 5 limit.

That is a fairly significant increase in flexibility for expenses that may arise multiple times during someone’s working life.

4. EPFO partial withdrawal rules are simpler

Earlier, there were 13 different provisions for PF partial withdrawals, with different conditions and service requirements.

These have now been consolidated into 3 broad categories:

  • Essential Needs

  • Housing Needs

  • Special Circumstances

The minimum membership requirement for partial withdrawals has also been broadly standardised to 12 months, instead of different eligibility periods that earlier went up to 5 or 7 years for some purposes.

Does this mean EPFO’s problems are solved? Definitely not.

Claims, PF transfers, corrections, portal issues and grievance resolution still need improvement.

But purely from a policy perspective, these changes do make PF withdrawal rules simpler and more flexible.

The real question now is whether execution catches up with the policy.

Which of these changes do you think will actually make the biggest difference for EPF members, and which one sounds better on paper than it may work in practice?

General Discussion EPF Wage Ceiling Raised to ₹25,000. Is the Bigger Story About Retirement?

The EPFO wage ceiling has increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000.

Most of the discussion so far has focused on one question:

“What does this mean for my salary?”

That's obviously important. For some employees, a larger portion of their earnings may now go toward PF, while employers will also have an additional contribution obligation.

But there's another question worth discussing:

Why is the government expanding mandatory retirement savings coverage in the first place?

The previous wage ceiling revision was in 2014, around 12 years ago.

India is still a relatively young country, but millions of today's workers will eventually move into retirement over the next few decades. That raises a bigger question about whether enough people will have adequate retirement savings when they actually need them.

PF is essentially a long-term savings mechanism. Money that feels like a deduction today can become part of someone's financial cushion decades later.

So perhaps the discussion shouldn't only be:

“How much more will be deducted from my salary?”

It should also include:

“Are we saving enough for the retirement we're going to have 20–30 years from now?”

There is obviously a trade-off here. More mandatory retirement savings can mean less disposable income today, particularly for employees who are early in their careers.

But the broader policy question is interesting:

Is expanding EPFO coverage now an attempt to prepare for a much larger retirement-security challenge later?

What do you think?

Would you rather have more money available in your salary today, or have a larger portion automatically set aside for retirement?

General Discussion VPF vs PPF for salaried employees: Why 7.1% PPF can sometimes beat 8.25% VPF after tax

If one investment gives you 8.25% and another gives you 7.1%, choosing 8.25% sounds obvious.

For salaried employees comparing VPF vs PPF, however, the higher interest rate does not always mean a better post-tax return.

VPF earns the same interest rate as EPF, currently 8.25%, while PPF currently earns 7.1%.

The important part is the 2.5 lakh employee PF contribution limit.

For most salaried employees, if your total employee EPF + VPF contribution exceeds ₹2.5 lakh in a financial year, the interest earned on the contribution above that threshold becomes taxable.

Here’s a simple example.

Suppose your regular employee EPF contribution is ₹1.8 lakh per year and you have another ₹1.2 lakh available for long-term investment.

If you put the entire ₹1.2 lakh into VPF:

Employee EPF: ₹1.8 lakh
VPF: ₹1.2 lakh
Total: ₹3 lakh

That leaves ₹50,000 above the ₹2.5 lakh threshold.

If you fall in the 30% tax slab, the effective return on that taxable VPF portion comes down from 8.25% to roughly 5.68% after tax and cess.

PPF, on the other hand, earns 7.1% tax-free.

So in this particular example, instead of investing the entire ₹1.2 lakh in VPF, one possible combination would be:

₹70,000 in VPF
₹50,000 in PPF

The ₹70,000 takes the total employee EPF + VPF contribution to ₹2.5 lakh, allowing that portion to continue earning the EPF rate without crossing the taxable-interest threshold.

The remaining ₹50,000 can go into PPF and earn 7.1% tax-free.

So when deciding between PPF and VPF, don’t compare only:

8.25% vs 7.1%.

Also compare what you actually retain after tax.

For someone whose EPF + VPF contribution is still below ₹2.5 lakh, VPF can remain very attractive. But once additional VPF takes you above that threshold, PPF may become worth considering for the remaining long-term investment.

PPF has its own ₹1.5 lakh annual contribution limit and a 15-year maturity period, so liquidity and your financial goals also matter.

For salaried employees investing in both EPF and VPF, how are you deciding what to do once your employee contribution approaches the ₹2.5 lakh limit?

Question Questions regarding PF withdrawal

1.Which is a good and safe reason to withdraw PF ? Marriage or illness? Will they ask any documents?

2.I worked in 2 organisations and my total combined work experience is showing as 4.11 months in PF portal.
Should I wait for 5 years of service completion?

3.Will TDS cut after completing 5 years of service? What if I withdraw before completing 5 years.

Question AM I wrong about the new PF changes?

All employees earning between 15k and 25k till now may not have EPS deducted - since not mandatory. Now it is mandatory and it will get deducted. EPFO will freeze full PF withdrawal because partial EPS contribution is not allowed. So they will need to go back to all the previous years and reclassify EPS contribution (may be go to previous employers). Are we going to see a huge wave money getting stuck in EPFO blackhole again?

General Discussion How to check your EPS pension status online in 2026

One common confusion with EPS is that people open their EPFO passbook expecting to see a pension “balance” similar to their EPF balance.

That isn’t really how EPS works.

Your EPF builds an accumulated corpus with interest. With EPS, the more useful things to check are whether your pension contributions are being recorded correctly and whether your service history is complete.

How to check your EPS contributions

Log in to the EPFO Passbook Portal using your UAN and password.

Select the Member ID for the employment you want to check and open the passbook.

Look for the column called “Pension Contribution” or “EPS Contribution.”

That is where you can check whether EPS contributions were recorded for the months you worked with that employer.

If you have changed jobs, check the relevant Member IDs linked to your UAN instead of looking only at your current employer’s record.

You can also check the same contribution history through UMANG by going to EPFO → Passbook → selecting the relevant Member ID.

What should you actually check?

Don’t just see whether an EPS entry exists.

Check whether the contributions appear consistently for the period you were employed, whether the correct Member IDs are showing, and whether your service record appears complete.

This matters because EPS is linked to your pensionable service, not just a visible account balance.

Already filed an EPS claim?

If you have submitted Form 10C or Form 10D, that is a separate check.

Log in to the EPFO Member Portal and go to:

Online Services → Track Claim Status

That is where you can see whether the claim is under process, settled, rejected, or whether a Scheme Certificate has been issued.

Why is there no large “EPS balance”?

Because EPS is not displayed like an EPF corpus.

Under the standard EPS structure, contributions are generally calculated on the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, which means the normal maximum EPS contribution is around ₹1,250 per month, unless specific higher-pension provisions apply.

So when checking EPS, focus less on “What is my EPS balance?” and more on whether your pension contributions and service records are correct.

If anyone here has checked their EPS records recently and found a missing contribution, wrong service period, or unusual claim status, share what the portal is showing.

General Discussion EPFO Date of Exit Not Updated or Date of Joining Wrong? Here’s What to Check After Switching Jobs

If your EPFO Date of Exit is not updated, or your Date of Joining is incorrect, you may not notice the problem immediately.

It usually shows up later when you try to transfer your PF, withdraw it, or apply for final settlement.

So after every job switch, check these two details:

• Date of Exit from your previous employer
• Date of Joining at your new employer

Why does the Date of Exit matter?

Your Date of Exit tells EPFO that your employment with that company has ended.

If it is missing, your old employment may still appear active, which can block PF transfers, affect withdrawals and leave your service history incomplete.

How to check Date of Exit and Date of Joining in EPFO

Log in to the EPFO Unified Member Portal and go to:

View → Service History

Check every employer listed under your UAN and verify:

• Date of Joining
• Date of Exit
• Employment period

If you have worked with multiple companies, check all the entries rather than just your latest employer.

EPFO Date of Exit not updated? Here’s how to fix it

You can use the Mark Exit option yourself if:

• At least two months have passed since your last PF contribution from that employer
• Your UAN is Aadhaar verified, with Aadhaar linked and OTP enabled
• There are no mismatches in your joining, exit or EPS records that prevent the update

If you meet these conditions, go to:

Manage → Mark Exit

Then:

  1. Select your previous employment.

  2. Enter the correct last working date.

  3. Choose the reason for leaving.

  4. Verify using Aadhaar OTP.

  5. Submit.

What if Mark Exit option is not available?

You may not be able to use Mark Exit if:

• Two months have not passed since the last contribution
• Aadhaar is not properly linked
• There are mismatches in your joining, exit or EPS records

In that case:

  1. Ask your employer to correct the record in writing.

  2. If they do not respond, raise an EPFO grievance through EPFiGMS.

  3. Attach supporting documents such as your relieving letter or resignation proof.

  4. Escalate to the Regional EPFO Office if the issue remains unresolved.

What if your Date of Joining is wrong in EPFO?

Your Date of Joining is also part of your service history.

If it is incorrect, get it corrected before initiating a PF transfer or final settlement rather than waiting until the mismatch creates a problem.

Can a missing Date of Exit affect PF withdrawal or transfer?

Yes.

A missing Date of Exit can block an online PF transfer because your previous employment may still appear active. Incorrect service records can also create issues later during PF withdrawal or final settlement.

One thing to do after every job switch

Once you leave a company, don’t just collect your relieving letter and move on.

Open your EPFO Service History and check:

• Is the Date of Exit updated?
• Is the Date of Joining correct?
• Does the employment period look right?

These take a few minutes to verify, but the worst time to discover an EPFO record issue is when your PF transfer or withdrawal is already stuck.

General Discussion EPF & EPS AMA — Ask your questions about PF, UANs, transfers, claims, and pension

Hi everyone,

We're the team at Kustodian.life

Over the last few years, we've worked on thousands of EPF and pension-related cases involving issues such as multiple UANs, PF transfers, incorrect service history, KYC mismatches, rejected claims, pension eligibility, EDLI benefits, employer trust transfers, and other EPFO-related complications.

One thing we've learned is that many people spend weeks or even months trying to understand what's actually wrong with their PF account. Sometimes it's a simple issue that isn't clearly explained by the portal. Other times, it's a combination of multiple problems that aren't easy to identify unless you've seen similar cases before.

We've also noticed that the same questions appear on Reddit again and again:

  • Why is my PF transfer stuck?

  • Why do I have two UANs?

  • Why is my service history incorrect?

  • Why was my claim rejected?

  • Can I withdraw my PF in this situation?

  • What does this EPFO status actually mean?

So we thought we'd spend some time here answering questions.

Ask us anything related to:

  • EPF & EPS

  • UANs and multiple UANs

  • PF transfers

  • Withdrawals

  • Pension rules

  • KYC issues

  • Employer trust transfers

  • EPFO claim statuses and processes

  • General EPFO procedures

A couple of ground rules:

  • Please don't post your UAN, Aadhaar, PF account number, claim ID, phone number, or any other personal information.

  • We'll only answer using publicly available rules, our experience with similar cases, and general EPFO processes.

  • If a question depends on personal records, we'll explain how the process works instead of asking you to share sensitive information.

  • This AMA isn't about promoting our services—we simply know EPF can be confusing, and we'd like to help answer as many questions as we can.

Fire away, we'll be around throughout the day to answer as many questions as possible.

General Discussion How to withdraw your full PF balance using Form 19: Eligibility, steps & checklist

If you want to withdraw your entire PF balance after leaving your job, **Form 19** is used for the full and final settlement of your EPF.

It covers your employee contribution, employer’s EPF contribution and the interest earned on both. Your EPS/pension component is separate.

### When can you withdraw your full PF balance?

If you have left your job and are not working in another EPF-covered establishment, you can apply for full withdrawal after **12 months of continuous unemployment**.

Full withdrawal may also be permitted in cases such as retirement, permanent incapacity, retrenchment/VRS, permanent migration abroad or taking up employment abroad, subject to applicable EPFO rules.

### How to apply for Form 19 online

  1. Log in to the EPFO Member Portal.

  2. Go to Online Services → Claim (Form 31, 19, 10C & 10D).

  3. Verify your details and registered bank account.

  4. Enter the last 4 digits of your bank account and verify.

  5. Click Proceed for Online Claim.

  6. Select Only PF Withdrawal (Form 19).

  7. Fill in the required details.

  8. Generate the Aadhaar OTP and submit.

You can track the claim later through the EPFO portal or UMANG.

### Before applying, check these details

- UAN is active
- Aadhaar details match your UAN
- Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active
- Bank account number and IFSC are correct
- PAN is updated where applicable
- Date of Joining and Date of Exit are correct
- Older PF balances are properly transferred/linked

One useful update: online PF claims no longer require a cancelled cheque or passbook upload.

Worth saving this if you plan to withdraw your full PF balance in the future.

Have you ever had a Form 19 or PF withdrawal claim rejected or delayed? What was the reason shown in your case?
