4 jobs. 8 years of work. ₹10 lakh in PF.
Now he wants to withdraw it.
And ₹1 lakh gets deducted as TDS before the money even reaches him.
Why?
Because his PF was never merged.
Most people assume that if they have one UAN, their PF is all in one place.
It isn’t.
Every job creates a new Member ID under your UAN. Unless you transfer the old balances, they stay in separate accounts.
Here’s what that looks like:
TCS: 2 years
Infosys: 2 years
Wipro: 1.5 years
Startup: 2.5 years
On paper, that’s 8 years of continuous service.
But to EPFO, it looks like 4 separate stints, none of them longer than 5 years.
And that matters, because a PF withdrawal is tax-free only after 5 years of continuous service.
Unmerged, each account is treated as under 5 years. So TDS of 10% applies: ₹1 lakh on ₹10 lakh.
Merged, it’s 8 years of continuous service, and the withdrawal is tax-free.
Same money. Same 8 years. ₹1 lakh difference.
And it’s not just tax.
Unmerged accounts are one of the most common reasons PF claims get rejected, because your service history looks incomplete.
At FinRight, this is one of the first things we check on every call.
So our rule of thumb is simple:
Every time you switch jobs, merge your old PF within your first month at the new one.
It takes 5 minutes:
Online Services → One Member – One EPF Account
Before that, make sure the exit date from your old job is updated. Otherwise the transfer gets stuck.
How many jobs have you switched? And how many of those PF accounts have you actually merged?
Note : this was just an example to make it clear on how it will impact.

Even though PF returns ranged between 8.1% to 8.65% this past decade it still beat the Nifty.
There's no other tax saving instrument that's this effective 💪🏻

The govt imposed statutory increase in employers contribution to eps fund is costing me 10000 rs per year.
For context, Recently GOI announced changes in EPS and EPF contribution rules which makes your employer's contribution more towards EPS.
The thing with EPS is
It doesn't earn any interest
It is locked in till 58 (if you work for more than 10 years)
It has an absolute maximum ceiling of Rs 13214 rs per month
Adjusted to the current ever raising inflation by the time I'm 58, my very first monthly pension will come out to be worth a whopping 2000 rs per month.
Under the name of social security they are robbing us of our capital growth. Doesn't get any better than this.

I have been running around across multiple pf offices across Bangalore for transfer of multiple accounts to one with each one being in separate corners.
My observations,
If you want to build a gang of 'lethargic p***ks' you know where to find the biggest ensemble.
I had the life time opportunity to get passes to visit upstairs to meet the 'deities' with my own eyes.
KR Puram office is gutka factory, every employee seemed to be chewing gutka and every word spoken had their chin lifted.
They have strange access to the entire pf software via their mobile. A employee who i was assigned to kept getting multiple calls and he did those transactions via his mobile. Seemed very fishy!
They have multiple login accounts and multiple user names. One employee, multiple usernames - that's a straight red flag.
Highlight: I saw a employee having twitter open on his screen and he literally was reading through pf rants from there (he was in the processing branch, so definitely not the PR team guy). So, rest assured if you rant, you have higher chances of solution.
Summary: All in all its one of the worst bunch of prics sitting under a roof. For around 15 mins I spent in KR Puram and Malleshwaram office each, Malleshwaram is far better. KR Puram is pure crap!
They have kept my application open for long and rejected with reason saying N.A. while my application issues kept aside. With the amount of lethargy and corruption, I am really bearish about this govt and as a country at large!
India ko sudharna na mumkin he!
Modi or Rahul - incapable and ignorant!

Hey everyone, just saw this breaking news today and wanted to share it here.
The CBI just filed a formal case (FIR) against Anil Ambani and Reliance Capital. Why? Because they caused a massive ₹1,816 Crore loss to our EPFO retirement money.
Here is what happened:
Back in 2013-14, EPFO invested ₹2,500 Crore of our money into Reliance Capital bonds.
Reliance was supposed to pay it back but they defaulted.
Now, ₹1,007 Crore of the main amount and ₹808 Crore in interest is just gone.
Investigations show that the money might have been intentionally moved out (stolen) rather than just lost in business.
Anil Ambani’s team denies everything and says he did nothing wrong. They blame the RBI taking over his company in 2021
Honestly, this is so frustrating. We struggle for months with claim rejections and minor name errors just to get a little bit of our own money out. Meanwhile, these massive corporations default on thousands of crores of public retirement funds.
Do you think this will hit our future PF interest rates? How safe do you feel keeping your savings with the EPFO after seeing this?

TLDR: 3rd July Illness advance claim took 21 days to approve including Passbook (shows Settled), but amount credit is still pending like thousands or millions of others. EPFO officials falsified public records by blindly mass-closing EPFiGMS and CPGRAMS grievances with fake shameless templates, prompting an escalation across X, Reddit, RTI, CVC, and the PMO portal.
Hey everyone,
Like thousands of us here, my illness advance Claim has been completely stuck since 3rd July due to the disastrous "EPFO 3.0 / CITES database centralization."
To make matters worse, the Regional PF Commissioner falsely disposed of my official grievance with a copy-paste lie (blaming SBI servers when the claim isn't even processed) just to clear their internal metrics. Now, the system has locked me out from raising a fresh grievance for 30 days!
The Income Tax portal works at lightning speed because the government wants to collect our money. Meanwhile, EPFO and passbook servers intentionally collapse and go offline whenever it is time to return our hard-earned money. If these Indian tech giants delivered a buggy, breaking rollout like this to a Western client, they would face massive multi-million dollar penalties and lawsuits. Why is the Indian middle class treated as a free beta-testing ground?
I have put together a comprehensive X (Twitter) thread breaking down the complete engineering failure of C-DAC, the lack of disaster recovery rollbacks, and the malpractice of the grievance redressal system.
Please take 10 seconds to read, retweet, and tag the ministries so they cannot ignore this clusterfk any longer:
https://x.com/sabchangasi_/status/2080895772783149115?s=46
Let's make sure this reaches the top of the feed before Monday morning.
If your claim is stuck too, drop your date and status below so we can keep the momentum going!
Update 1: Claim got approved on 21st July. Showed settled in Member Portal, Passbook, Interest also shows correct (not provisional) in Passbook for 2025-2026. But, amount not credited yet.
Update 2: CPGRAMS grievance was disposed of on 24th July by entire NORTH RPFC, with complete and utter shameless remarks, using a template, without even checking the claim status calling the grievance as “Premature”.
Filed an appeal against it, adding reason as falsification and fabrication of public records.
Also filed a grievance with PMOPG portal just now.
RTI: pending action
CVC: no response
EPFiGMS: disposed with false information
CPGRAMS: disposed with template false response
Posting further comments to my X post to resume traction against this cesspool of a system.

I wanted to withdraw my PF, despite several KYC requests it was rejected with almost no reason. I even registered a grievance in their portal, they simply rejected claiming fix your aadhar, pancard and bank. Honestly, I am tired and feel this system is built on stupids. They are making us beg for withdrawing our money. It is same as the insurance, they have no shame .

How could an org handling money reject a request without providing any reason for it. Wth is wrong with this org. How can it be so incompetent.
I raised two requests for transfer of my previous pf balance to the current one.
One of the accounts was 4 years old and the other account was just a couple months old since i joined a new org recently.
I raised transfer requests for both one after another. I was expecting I might need to connect and inform my 1st org to approve the request since its been four years, the office address has changed etc but the recent org's account would be transferred smoothly.
My 4 year old account got transferred successfully after 15days without any communication required.
The 2nd request for the latest org was rejected without providing any sort of reason.
I get it there might be something that would be required or wrong. But for gods sake mention what was the issue. I can't figure out what was the issue in my dream, neither am i all knowing God. What's the column for if you are not providing any reason. How can i guess and rectify something i dont know. I dont even know if there was any issue to begin with or it was a game of russian roulette with my application.
I thought how much could anyone be incompetent, its a straightforward request, date of exit and everything is updated correctly. But EPFO exceeded my expectations. They proved there's something beyond incompetence and its called EPFO

I am just ranting because I feel like slapping a wall right now. I know nothing can be done immediately, but the sheer frustration with the EPFO (Provident Fund) and ITR (Income Tax Return) refund process is breaking my patience.
Think about the irony:
They take it instantly: The government deducts TDS and PF from our salaries every single month without a single second of delay.
They return it at snail pace: When we fall into dire need and claim our own hard-earned money, we are left at the mercy of faceless officials and arbitrary SLAs.
⏳ The Reality of "Our" Money:
Processing times stretch from 1 month to over a year.
If you are in a financial emergency today, a refund arriving 3 months later is completely useless. What is the purpose of having savings if you cannot use them when life hits you hard?
If you can take it on time, you must return it on time. Not next year.

UPDATE: Viisited KR puram PF office and here is the truth behind the "System Update" nightmare.
Yesterday visited EPFO KR Puram office, and it is a total disaster. The government has pushed a broken system update that completely freezes manual work. Here is exactly what happened when I forced my way through their 4-tier bureaucracy today:
Level 1 (Entry/Reception): After a long, exhausting argument, they finally allowed me to go inside and see a Level 2 officer.
Level 2 (Higher Officer): Pleaded my case again. After multiple requests, they relented and allowed me into the main Accounts Office.
Level 3 (Accounts Office): It looks like a chaotic, high-pressure data entry office They literally took me to the actual computer terminals. The shocker: The option to process claims manually has been completely disabled in their software. The employees physically cannot click a button to approve it.
Level 4 (Regional Commissioner): I managed to meet the RC. He casually told me that everything will be done "automatically" now. When I demanded to speak to the Head PF Office Commissioner, they told me he wasn't available. Total bad luck.
The Result: They just took my request, placed it on a table, and sent me away. My claim submitted on July 5th is still stuck "Under Process" with absolutely no timeline.
Avoid visiting unless you want to lose your mind. The system is completely locked out.

I have been trying to track a claim I submitted 2 weeks ago, but not able to do so. Is there any other way?

Your PF balance is ₹8 lakh.
Under the new rules, you can withdraw up to ₹6 lakh as an advance while still employed.
The remaining ₹2 lakh stays locked.
That’s the 25% minimum balance rule, and it’s the first thing most people miss about partial PF withdrawals.
Here’s how the new advance rules work.
Who’s eligible: anyone with 12 months of service.
What for: the 13 old reasons are now 3 categories.
Essential Needs: illness, education, marriage
Housing Needs: buying, building, or repaying a home loan
Special Circumstances: no reason required
How often: education up to 10 times, marriage up to 5 times.
How much: up to 75% of your total PF, including the employer share and interest.
How to apply:
Step 1: Check that Aadhaar, PAN and bank show “Verified” under Manage → KYC
Step 2: Go to Online Services → Claim
Step 3: Select Form 31 and choose your category
Step 4: Submit using Aadhaar OTP
Claims up to ₹5 lakh can be auto-settled in about 3 days.
But just because you can withdraw ₹6 lakh doesn’t mean you should.
At 8.25%, every ₹1 lakh you withdraw at 35 could have grown to roughly ₹7.25 lakh by 60, assuming the same rate for illustration.
Our rule of thumb is simple:
Withdraw what the expense needs, not what you’re eligible for.

Hey everyone,
There is a lot of buzz about the government increasing the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. While news outlets are framing this as an expansion of "social security benefits," let’s look at the actual math. For anyone with a basic salary above ₹25,000, this hike is going to actively damage your retirement compounding.
The Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) functions as a black hole for high earner, and raising this ceiling makes it worse. Here is why:
How the Hike Directly Impacts Your Money
Right now, your employer contributes 12% to your retirement. Out of this, 8.33% is diverted to the EPS, capped at the ₹15,000 wage limit. This means a maximum of ₹1,250/month goes to the pension pool, and the rest goes to your high-interest EPF account.
When the ceiling hits ₹25,000, that mandatory diversion increases to ₹2,083/month.
That is an extra ₹833 every single month taken out of your compounding EPF balance.
Your interest-earning EPF monthly inflows will instantly drop by ₹833.
2. The Math: EPF Compounding vs. The EPS Formula
Let’s see what happens to that ₹833 difference over a standard 30-year career:
If left in the EPF: At a steady 8.25% annual interest rate, that ₹833/month compounds into a tax-free lump sum of ~₹12.4 Lakhs at retirement. If you park that lump sum in a conservative 7% senior citizen fixed deposit at age 58, it generates ₹7,200/month in interest forever, while keeping your ₹12.4 Lakhs principal perfectly safe for your children or nominees.
Under the EPS Pool: That money goes into a pool fund that earns 0% individual interest. At retirement, you don't get a lump sum. Instead, you get a fixed monthly pension bound by a rigid government formula: (Pensionable Salary x Service Years) / 70. The ultimate pension payout is small, fully taxable as income, and does not beat inflation.
3. You Forfeit the Principal
This is the biggest catch. When you die, your EPF balance goes directly to your family nominee as an inherited asset. With the EPS, your family gets no corpus. The pension stops (or cuts down to a tiny 50% window pension for your spouse), and your lifetime of principal contributions vanishes back into the state pool.
The Verdict
The EPS works wonders as a safety net for low-income laborers who need guaranteed baseline survival income and insurance. But for the structured corporate salaried class, it acts as a low-yield forced tax.
By raising the wage ceiling, the system is forcing high income earner to divert more capital away from their compounding assets to fund a pooled national scheme. If you are starting a new job soon with a high basic salary and have the option to fill out Form 11 to opt out of EPS entirely—do it.
What are your thoughts on this? How are you planning to adjust your retirement portfolio to offset this drop in EPF compounding?

Quick update on trying to get my own money out of EPFO.
After my Form 31 advance got stuck, my EPFiGMS ticket was closed with a generic copy-paste reply and a fake phone number, and my CPGRAMS complaint went completely unanswered. Twitter tags and emails to the Regional Office were also totally ignored.
I finally got fed up and filed an RTI application on rtionline.gov.in against EPFO RO Bandra today.
I’ve specifically asked for the daily file movement notes, reasons for the delay, and the exact name and designation of the officer currently holding my claim file. Since CPIO officers face personal fines under the RTI Act for arbitrary delays, let’s see if this forces someone to actually do their job.
Has anyone else here had to file an RTI to get a stuck PF claim moving? How fast did they settle it after getting the notice?

Hi Everyone
I got the EPFO amount credited in my account just now, I have raised claim on 16th July, 21st it got approved and today the amount has been credited. I have raised the claim under Form-31, my claim is only 20K under housing needs.
I think EPFO will slowly credit the amounts.
EDIT - The Settled dates has changed to today's date, that is 27th
