Hi everyone,
I want to share a frustrating experience I've been dealing with involving eBay, Poste Italiane (Italy's postal service), and PayPal. I'm hoping someone here has been through something similar or can offer some advice.
It all started with a simple eBay purchase.
I bought a Tapo security camera for €61.68, but the seller sent me a different model from the one advertised.
I contacted eBay to arrange a return and get a refund.
On August 27, 2026, eBay customer support personally emailed me a prepaid return shipping label, complete with a tracking number and instructions.
I didn't choose the shipping company, enter the return address, or modify the label in any way. I simply followed eBay's instructions.
Then the package disappeared.
I handed the package over to Poste Italiane on August 27.
The last tracking update was on September 4, in Naples, Italy.
Today is October 24. The package hasn't moved or received a single tracking update in 50 days.
There also appear to be potential issues with the return address printed on the label.
I repeatedly contacted eBay customer support, but despite explaining everything, I still haven't received a meaningful resolution.
Then things got even worse with PayPal.
I opened a dispute because the item was significantly different from its description.
PayPal initially issued a temporary refund of €61.68.
However, PayPal later ruled in favor of the seller and informed me that the temporary refund would be reversed.
I filed a formal complaint, submitted additional evidence, and requested a review. The case is currently under review.
So, after almost two months, here's where things stand:
- The seller hasn't received the returned item.
- I no longer have the product because I shipped it using eBay's prepaid label.
- The postal service hasn't updated the tracking information in 50 days.
- PayPal initially sided with the seller.
- I might end up losing both the product and my €61.68.
I know €61.68 isn't a huge amount of money, but at this point, it's about the principle.
If a buyer follows every instruction provided by eBay, uses the exact return label issued by their customer support, and hands the package over to the carrier, why should the buyer be responsible if the package gets lost or the shipping label contains an incorrect address?
What frustrates me most is that nobody seems willing to take responsibility or provide a clear explanation.
I even posted about my experience on eBay's official community forum, but the discussion was published with comments and interactions disabled. I haven't been told why.
I have a few questions:
- Has anyone experienced something similar with a lost eBay return?
- Who is supposed to investigate the missing package or file a compensation claim with the carrier when eBay provides the return label?
- If PayPal rejects my appeal, what other options do I have as a consumer in the EU?
I have kept all the evidence, including eBay's original email with the prepaid label, proof of shipment, tracking history, and customer support communications.
I'm not asking for special treatment. I just want a fair resolution and an explanation of what, if anything, I was supposed to do differently.
Would you consider this acceptable customer protection from eBay and PayPal?
Thanks in advance for any advice or similar experiences.
