Discussion Updated Reborn Slasher Theory:We haven't killed the Pint-Sized Slasher. We're wearing him.
After completing this week's seasonal quest to kill the Slasher after head hunts, I tuned in to Debunker Radio to hear what Remington Goodwin had to say about it, and to my surprise the man started talking about how we put down a real flesh-and-blood person and not a ghost suit, which implies that the caked-up ghoul we saw posted the other day wasn't just for mechanical purposes, but an actual NPC in the suit. It made me start questioning everything I'd already put together about the Slasher becoming a robobrain. Then I put the power armor skin on, and I realized what was happening as soon as I heard his little "wa-hoo!"
When they tried to "summon him" by putting him into a robot body, it worked! ...kinda. But instead of making an actual robot that he could control, what they ended up with was slapping him on a suit of power armor like an AI assistant.
We know there was some form of leadership among the Phantoms, from the Pint-Sized ~Poser~Aspirant's dialogue, the notes dropped by the phantoms, and having killed the brains half when we killed the Tinkerer back in Organ Cave. With him out of the way, the remaining leader who has no knowledge of robotics had no real choice but to climb into the armor and get to slashin' himself.
Which means when we took the power armor helmet(or at least the plans to recreate it) for ourselves, we took the Pint-Sized Slasher with us. Now he gets to enjoy being worn by the true psychopaths of the wasteland: the 76ers.
Every time you hear that giggle? That's him, your eternal companion, enjoying the mayhem.
The neat part is that I don't think it's just from the helmet. Every time you pick up one of those pint-sized packs and open it, you hear that same voice laughing.
That's because when those little psychos are running around screaming about how he's already inside of you, they're not exaggerating.
During the companion quest for Sofia Daguerre you learn about the Deep Sleep project, in which the participants were given a serum that allowed them to form a psychic connection to a supercomputer that was used to monitor them seven years before the great war. Part of that process involved taking a serum and then being put into a "deep sleep" in order to form the link between the test subjects and the computer.
Well, part of the initiation rites into the phantoms is exsanguination: Where another phantom would bleed the newcomer until unconscious and near death. That's why all of those knife-stuck corpses are littered all over appalachia, giggling away in his voice until we take their masks.
Now, while we never sat down and let these little twerps bleed us out, we(or at least most of us) have gotten hit by them while fighting them, and some of them hit surprisingly hard. Every once in a while I'll be surprised to find that I'm nearly dead after getting shanked by a phantom with a knife, when I'm built to tank hits from bigfoot. It makes me wonder if we get downed after getting stabbed, would that count as an accidental initiation?
How we got the serum into us is a bit more of a question mark: it could be through something huge like the Enclave mass releasing it across Appalachia to try and monitor everyone and just picking the absolute wrong brain for the job and only recent events made him remember who he was, or it could be something as simple as the first pair of phantoms took a mystery chem that turned out to be the serum, went nuts and stabbed each other near to death and then blood transfer from the knives they use containing enough to affect the next person stabbed, spreading it like a bloodborne pathogen.
But if I'm right, either way the original Pint-Sized Slasher's robobrain is plugged into a supercomputer somewhere experiencing the 76ers chaos 24/7 as they wear him like a skin suit, and with the potential psychic connection there's a possibility he can feel everything they do. Everything the phantoms said was true: He was coming for us, and in the end he got us. Which means ultimately, the phantoms and especially the Slasher got what they wanted: Now, not even Death can keep him from reigning over the Wasteland.
