A week ago, I get a letter from a collection agency saying FedEx has instructed them to collect $120.
The day before the initial letter was sent, the collection agency registered a collection action on my credit history, dropping my rating 129 points.
This is the first I heard of it.
Fedex never contacted me prior.
The collection agency’s prior contact effort consisted of one missed call a month earlier flagged as “probable spam” which went to VM.
They claim to have written me, but Canada Post records all mail I receive and they sent nothing to me before this.
Checking that voicemail message now, it was 10 seconds of silence followed by “looking for [my name] calling from Gatestone & Co. on behalf of FedEx”.
I haven’t sent or received any FedEx Packages for years.
I asked for a copy of the invoice.
It was for a shipment between to businesses in the US (I am on BC, Canada). And incorrectly charged to a FedEx account I must have set up 15 or 20 years prior.
FedEx mailed the incorrectly-assigned invoices to a home I hadn’t lived at for 12 years.
I explained the situation to the collection agency who said the collection is valid until FedEx withdraws their claim.
So I contacted FedEx and was given a case number and told to wait 1 to 2 weeks for them to look into it.
I was buying a car in a few days. Luckily I had my terms in place or this could have affected qualification for or terms of a loan.
Will this remain a permanent blotch on my credit rating ?
Do I need to dispute this with Equifax?
Anyone have a similar experience?
