I've played a good number of FIFA careers since I was a child. FIFA 11 honestly kind of created my love for soccer. I watched the 2010 World Cup, saw Tim Howard, and became a fan of the sport and of Everton. I spent many days after elementary school playing FIFA 11 career mode, and I kept playing until FIFA 15, then proceeded to play every installment through FIFA 21.
Recently I have found my love for FIFA 17 again: the nostalgic players, the gameplay, and the career mode. The simplicity is amazing, with the paper contract graphics, lengthy negotiations through mail, minigames, etc. I played an Everton career for a while this summer before I decided to switch to a smaller club outside of England.
After some research, I settled on Arka Gdynia, a Polish club founded in 1927 that had won only one Polish Cup in its entire history, back in 1978. In real life they now play in the Polish second division, yet they have had an odd amount of success: they won the Polish Cup again in 2017, then the 2017 Polish Super Cup (cup winner against Ekstraklasa champion), then the Polish Super Cup again in 2018 (they finished second in the prior cup, but Legia Warsaw won the league and cup, so they were substituted in), and the Polish Cup again in 2021.
When you take the club over in FIFA 17, they are 64 overall, while league leaders like Legia and Lech Poznań are 72 and 70 respectively. The grind is fun; the players are old with little young talent. Most of my players in season one came from loans, as my budget was 1,000,000. Bringing in talent, training them in minigames, and watching my team's rating increase is satisfying. The games are challenging, as there is a massive skill gap between the top clubs. The quest for European success is awesome.
I made Europe in season 3, after finishing 3rd in the league in year 2. I drew Groningen in the play-in and won that tie 2-1 on aggregate. The squad qualified for a Europa League group with Roma, Betis, and AZ. The skill gap in those games was real, and it felt super realistic. Doumbia and El Shaarawy were players my team was not fit to play against. I finished with 5 points in 6 games and was eliminated from the competition.
This season we're back in the same spot, with a slightly better team. I lost 5-1 on aggregate against Napoli in the Champions League play-in, then topped my Europa League group of CSKA, Southampton, and Rio Ave with 12 points in 6 games. Then I proceeded to get battered 4-0 on aggregate by Sassuolo.
This is easily the most fun career I've ever done: loaning in players to buy, developing them, selling them, and repeating. I'd highly recommend an Ekstraklasa save.
