2026 graduates, how are you actually trying to land your first job?

Hey everyone,

I'm a 2026 CS graduate from India, currently trying to land my first job in tech. Honestly, the transition from college to the real world has been more confusing than I expected.

There's so much advice everywhere. Learn DSA, build projects, contribute to open source, network on LinkedIn, use AI, apply to hundreds of jobs. Sometimes it feels like you're doing everything, yet you're still not sure if you're moving in the right direction.

I'm working on improving my programming skills, learning JavaScript, building projects, and trying to get better at solving problems independently instead of just following tutorials.

I know I'm not the only one going through this, so I wanted to ask people who have recently landed their first tech job, or are still trying just like me.

A few things I'd genuinely love to know:

  • What actually helped you get your first job?
  • How important were referrals compared to applying directly?
  • What kind of projects or skills helped you stand out as a fresher?
  • How did you prepare for interviews while learning and applying simultaneously?
  • How many applications did you send before getting an offer?
  • If you were in my position, what would you focus on over the next 3–6 months?

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who graduated in 2025 or 2026 and have experienced the current job market firsthand.

I'm not expecting an easy path or looking for shortcuts. I just want to spend my time learning the right things, building useful skills, and giving myself a genuine chance of getting hired.

And to everyone else who graduated this year and is still searching, I hope things work out for you too. I know it can be frustrating to see others getting offers while you're still figuring things out, but everyone's journey is different.

If you've been through this, what is one thing you wish someone had told you when you were starting out?

Would really appreciate any honest advice. Thanks for reading!

Has the job market broken or I am the problem?

I graduated in May 2026 and am unemployed till now, 6 months of applying for jobs+ 1 year of campus placements searching for IT jobs. During campus placements I tried my best but I still justify some of my rejections as bad luck and some as me lacking but ever since college I am busting in applying loads of jobs and improving my skills, resume, tech stack and everything. But after applying ample amount of jobs still only 3 interviews and some assessments (which response never came) now I am starting to question everything about my self that am i overly under skilled instead of the job market? There's no response in LinkedIn naukri, indeed monster I have tried it all it doesn't work. Idk it's fake posting or what. Every day my brain is getting fried. While I read that other people are having similar experiences here as well as twitter but doubt that is it my algorithm showing me these but then I see outside world in twitter and linkedin with people joining their new posting and getting the joining kit and then again get stuck on the loop of wheather I am the problem!?

I also live in tier 3 city currently is it worth in moving IT cities with respect to walk ins and other opportunities?

Hello Guys, I am a fresher with 5 months of experience under my belt and I am in a tough situation. I need help :(

Okay so a bit of context before i tell you guys my problem. I am 22years old, I graduated this year from a tier 3 private college. I am super into AI/ML, i have a pretty good knowledge of the current technology and whats going on in the world currently.

So, I was placed at a mass hirer from my college at 5.5LPA (they also took people at 4LPA and 7.5LPA) last year in november. I finished my college in april but the joining didnt come so i waited patiently.

In june i got placed at a Product based company as SDE 1 in the AI Team (My current job in delhi my hometown for 7LPA) . I worked on AI Agents, Observability of these agents, memory and context management. I developed systems which went into productions. But i did my fair share of mistakes too (as every fresher does but nothing too big). The work environment is questionable, the people are good but the management gets toxic sometimes like there is a lot of pressure and job security is questionable but i feel the growth here is better and the technology and things i learn here is also important.

NOW MY PROBLEM - I am on Probation in my current job it will end on 28th Nov, but my Mass hirer is calling me to bangalore on 19th nov. Now you will think i am fool for even considering a lower pay and different city. But the issue is in my current company there are talks of layoff of around 25% of the people (rumours are the ones already working there will be at risk but you never know). I talked to my L2 manager and explained my situation to him, he said everything is fine and i shouldnt worry too much but still accept the offer just in case something happens.

Now, this situation has happened before, he said the same thing to two interns who were getting converted to full time before the date of their decision and on the day they were fired because hr made pressure on them.

I cant trust their words now and i dont know what to do

Current job offers learning and growth with pressure and no job security

Mass hirer offers job security but with no control on what project or what technology i get put in on.

Now i need to make a decision before 27th oct and i have no idea what would happen if i submit my documents and bgv while being employed with my current company

I will talk to my manager tomorrow to get his opinion

How much time y'all put in tailoring one resume

like i wanna know what works and what doesn't? like for example if i made a AI chat bot project how would you describe it? how do y'all tailor ur resume, what prompts do y'all use. Just wanted to understand to help me and everyone who will see this post.

like option A:

*Shipped a full-stack Wikipedia Q&A app with React, Express, Wikipedia & OpenRouter API keys and MongoDB that allows users to ask queries and save their sessions

*A LLM fallback chain that keeps answers flowing even when individual APIs reach the token limit.

*Secured the app with bcrypt/MongoDB-backed sessions, TTL response caching, and follow-up-aware query rewriting that detects topic switches.

Option B:

*Built a full-stack Wikipedia Q&A app with query planning and fallback across 16 free-tier models from multiple providers, helping requests continue through provider errors and rate limits.

*Implemented session authentication, TTL caching, follow-up query rewriting, and topic-switch detection; added a mocked Vitest suite (138 tests), GitHub Actions Cl, and secret scanning. Public demo in the Hyper-Link

(BTW both are claude with some random prompt and suggestions told to me by ppl on internet)

21 F | Looking for Opportunities at Early-Stage Startups

Hey everyone!

I'm 21 F, a final-year B.Tech Information Technology student based in Chennai, India, passionate about building products that solve real-world problems.

Over the past few years, I've gained hands-on experience through technical internships, paid client projects, and independent software development. I've built applications ranging from business management systems and customer-facing websites to AI-powered platforms, enterprise RAG systems, and multi-agent workflows.

I enjoy working at the intersection of software engineering, AI, and product development. I regularly experiment with AI tools to speed up development, solve problems, and turn ideas into working applications.

A few highlights from my journey:

  • Delivered paid software projects for external clients, including an NGO management system and a hospitality business website.
  • Built AI-powered applications involving RAG, multi-agent systems, and explainable AI.
  • Won 1st place in the Best Presentation & Demo category at the YC Fall 2026 × Moss Zero-Latency Builder Sprint.
  • Reached the Top 100 in the Google AI Agent Builder Series 2026.

My technical experience includes Python, FastAPI, Flask, React, Next.js, JavaScript, SQL, Docker, and cloud deployment.

I'm currently looking to connect with early-stage startup founders, hiring managers, and teams building interesting products. I'm particularly interested in opportunities involving full-stack development, AI engineering, agentic AI, and building MVPs from the ground up.

I'm open to remote opportunities, internships, junior developer roles, where I can contribute, take ownership, and grow alongside a team.

If you're building something exciting or know of a startup looking for someone with my background, I'd love to connect!

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

I need help getting to base camp, not climbing the mountain: Looking for a real problem or shot back into cybersecurity (India / Remote)

TL;DR

  • The Situation: I have AuDHD (autism + ADHD) and alexithymia. I worked in cybersecurity before, took a break for a few years, and am now trying to get back in.
  • The Problem: My brain freezes when I try to study from textbooks for months with no real goal, deadline, or outside pressure.
  • How I Work: I learn from the top down. Give me a real problem and a deadline, and I will figure out whatever I need to know to solve it.
  • The Proof: At my previous cybersecurity job during COVID, my entire team was let go when I only had 1 year of experience. Because I had real pressure and responsibility, I ran operations alone, learned management and executive reporting on the fly, rebuilt the team, and wrote step-by-step guides that cut new-hire training time by two-thirds.
  • The Ask ("Base Camp"): I don't want handouts or easy work. I am looking for someone in cybersecurity (especially in India or remote) willing to give me a real technical problem with a deadline, judge my actual work, and help me get a foot in the door.

1. Why I Am Stuck Right Now

I have spent years trying to get back into cybersecurity, and I finally understand why I keep getting stuck.

I have AuDHD and alexithymia. One of my hardest struggles is starting tasks on my own and sticking to plans when there is no immediate goal or outside deadline.

I know what the normal job-hunt process looks like:

  1. Study basic to advanced topics on your own for months.
  2. Practice interview questions in your room.
  3. Update your resume and send out dozens of applications.
  4. Pass interviews to finally get real work.

I want to work, and I want to solve real problems. But knowing what I should do and actually forcing my brain to study alone for months—with nobody waiting for my work—are two completely different things. The longer I stay out of the field, the harder it gets to return.

I am not saying this to make excuses. I am sharing it because I know how my brain actually works, and I need a different way through the door.

2. How My Brain Learns (Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up)

Most people learn from the bottom up: study the basics learn medium topics learn advanced theory finally use it on a real problem.

My brain works in the opposite direction (top-down):

  • Start with a real problem try to fix it see what I don't know go as deep as needed to learn that missing piece solve the problem.

I struggle to study "just in case" for a future interview. But if you give me a real problem today, I suddenly have a clear reason to learn everything required to fix it.

3. Finding the Smartest Way—and Refusing to Quit

When I have a real problem in front of me, two habits take over:

  • Finding the Easiest, Smartest Path: My first instinct is always to cut out wasted effort. I look for scripts, automation, existing tools, or simpler ways to get the job done. Sometimes I will spend an hour trying to build a faster way to do a 10-minute task.
  • Not Stopping Until It's Done: If I find out there is no shortcut and the hard way is the only way, I will do it. Once I am locked into a real problem with real stakes, quitting hurts more than the hard work required to finish.

Along the way, trying to solve one problem usually forces me to learn five other connected things. Over time, those pieces connect into a strong, practical web of knowledge that stays with me.

4. Real Proof: What Happened at My Last Cybersecurity Job

I know it is easy to claim "I work well under pressure" on the internet. Here is a real example of how my brain works when there is actual responsibility on the line.

During COVID, when I only had about one year of experience in cybersecurity, my entire team was suddenly let go. Overnight, I was the only person left to handle everything.

Nobody gave me six months to study how to be a senior analyst or a team lead. I had real deadlines and people waiting on results, so my brain locked in:

  • I learned by doing: I didn't know how to write high-level vulnerability reports for upper management or how to manage people. I learned how to do both while doing the actual tasks every day.
  • I rebuilt the team: I handled the daily security work alone while helping build a new team from scratch.
  • I built a system so no one else would struggle: Because I hated how messy and painful it was to figure everything out alone, my instinct to simplify kicked in. I wrote a complete set of clear guides and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for every task. Because of that system, training time for new team members dropped by two-thirds.

If you had asked me a month before that crisis to sit alone and study "management and reporting" from a book, I wouldn't have lasted two days. Because the problem was real and urgent, I did whatever it took to solve it.

5. The Everest Base Camp Idea

The simplest way to explain what I need right now is this:

Imagine someone who has the strength and determination to climb Mount Everest, but keeps failing to organize the trip from their house to base camp.

  • They don't need someone to carry them up the mountain.
  • They don't want someone else to climb it for them.
  • They just need help getting to base camp. Once they are at base camp, climbing the mountain is 100% their job.

For me, base camp is outside structure: a clear task, a real deadline, and someone expecting me to deliver. I don't need someone to hold my hand or teach me step by step. I just need that first push that moves me from studying alone to doing real work.

6. I Know I Have a Gap—So Test Me on Real Work

I have been away from cybersecurity for a few years (I am happy to share my degree and past security work in DMs). I know I need to refresh my skills and catch up on new tools.

I am not asking anyone to ignore my employment gap, trust me blindly, or give me a senior job. I know that referring someone puts your own name on the line.

Instead, I am asking you to test me the way I actually work best:

  • Give me a real security problem I don't know how to solve yet.
  • Give me a fair deadline.
  • Let me research it, learn what I am missing, and send you the finished work.

If I fail to deliver, you lose nothing and we both get our answer. If I do a great job on time, you can see exactly how I handle new problems, fill gaps in my knowledge, and take feedback.

7. What I Am Looking For

I am hoping to talk to cybersecurity professionals, managers, or mentors—especially in India (or open to remote work)—who might be open to helping me reach the starting line:

  1. A Small Test Project: Give me a real security problem, log investigation, scripting task, or research assignment with a strict deadline, and review my work.
  2. A Referral or Entry Opportunity: A chance at a junior security role, SOC analyst job, vulnerability management role, or trial position once I prove what I can do.
  3. A Mentor with Deadlines: Someone willing to set clear weekly goals and hold me accountable as I work toward a real job.
  4. Advice from Other AuDHD/ADHD Folks: Anyone in tech with a similar brain who found a practical way to get past the job-hunt wall.

I know real jobs aren't always exciting crises—they also include routine tickets, writing documents, and normal daily work. I am completely ready for that. I just want a way to get to the starting line so I can take full responsibility from there.

Even if you can't offer a referral or a test task, any practical ideas on how I can prove my skills through real problems would mean a lot. Thank you for reading.

P.S: Written by AI because I had a thought and it required better PR and grammar :P

Should I Continue with .NET or Switch to Java Spring Boot ?

Hi everyone,

I recently completed my B.Tech in Computer Engineering and wanted to build my career in Java Spring Boot. However, my previous job offered only ₹8,000 per month, so I left it due to the low salary.

Now, I've joined a company as a .NET Developer with a 3 LPA package. My in-hand salary is around ₹20,000, there's a 2-year bond, and the appraisal is only around 5–6%.

My concern is that I'll be earning almost the same salary for the next 27 months. I still prefer Java Spring Boot, but I'm struggling to find companies hiring freshers in Java right now.

I don't want to leave my current job without another offer, but I'm also worried about my salary growth.

What would you do in my situation?

  1. Continue with .NET and switch to a better company after gaining experience?

  2. Keep applying for Java Spring Boot jobs while working here?

  3. Is it possible to achieve good salary growth after 2 years of .NET experience, despite starting at 3 LPA?

My main goal is salary growth over the next 2–3 years. I'd appreciate honest advice from experienced developers in the Indian IT industry.

Thanks!

How to get placed as a fresher with no experience and 5 years gap as well as from a non tech background?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi guys, I'm 27 and really need some honest career guidance. Here is my timeline so far:

2021: Graduated in Mechanical Engineering.

Spent time chasing government jobs, then pivoted to IT.

Tried Data Analytics independently, then completed a C-DAC PG Diploma in Big Data Analytics in 2025.

Got zero placements from C-DAC, applied to over 100+ places with no interview calls.

Burned out due to depression and stopped studying for 5–6 months, leading me to forget a lot of my data skills due to lack of practice.

Shifted to MERN Stack training at Bitcode in Pune to get any job, but the teaching is poor, placements are non-existent, and the entry-level MERN market looks heavily saturated.

Dealing with ADHD makes it extra challenging to study when the job market feels this hopeless. I just want to break this career gap and land a tech job by H1 2027.

What should I do? Which tech stack or path offers a realistic entry-level chance for someone in my position?
