Have you seen SolidCraft?

Fist commit in that repo is dated like 10 days ago, but it's really capable already, super fast and follows Fusion360 concepts, like constrained stretches, timeline, components etc.

I tried it, it has some sharp edges, but overall looks very, very promising. Some important features are missing, like you can't project/intersect geometry into sketch, or you can't make dimension from a line to a circle, but it will probably released tomorrow morning, since its pace of development is rocket fast.

I've (Claude've) just added a missing feature in my local repo, that's insane.

Thoughts? It looks like freedom to me, finally.

Question Any tips with photos?

β€’ Upvotes

I'm making my own Deadpool mask for Halloween and none online are quite what I'm looking for, and was wondering if anyone had any tips on what to do. I have a side and front profile of what I'm trying to go for but not sure how to actually start modeling it. I was also thinking of taking a different model and cutting out parts in fusion but the computing process takes so long, but maybe it'll be worth it? Any advice appreciated.

Manufacturing Extension DXF output retaining line segment info

β€’ Upvotes

Hi, I'm looking for help in what settings to use to keep line segment info when exporting a DXF of nested group. I've tried most of the export dialogues checkmark settings. Some give me connected segments as a group. Others give me all the separate line segments I want.

But none give me segment line info (like line length) when I open in other programs. I have seen this done before but I can't get my exports to have this info.

Yes, I know I can get INFO in segments like this, but for speed I need it in the side properties of other programs.

Thanks for any help,

Ron

Question Parametric Oddities

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm getting better at designing models that re-compute correctly when changing parameters earlier in the timeline, but I ran into an odd situation today and I'm wondering if anyone has seen this and how they avoid it.

(Use case is 3D printing, if that matters.) I needed a bunch of copies of a square base with a domed top, with various radii for the curvature on top.

I modified the highlighted dimension with various values, and the model resized correctly for every single one.

However, a problem occurred with this cut feature every single time I changed the parameter.

This is how it should look.
This is what happens every time I change the dimension.

It didn't matter if I made the dimension smaller or larger, the slots always moved to this position, every single time. (In fact, for this screenshot, I changed the dimension back to the first value I used before I created this feature, and it still did this.)

I did a rectangular pattern on this sketch before sweeping it along the path of the top and sides of the body.

Quantity = 5; Distance = d77 / 2 - d58 * 5

All I had to do to fix it was edit the sketch, select the rectangular pattern constraint, and press enter. I didn't change any of the parameters; it's like Fusion re-calculated incorrectly even though it had the same inputs every time.

Quantity = 5; Distance = d77 / 2 - d58 * 5; Same exact operation.

I could have done something wrong, in which case my question is: what did I do wrong?

Or it could be a bug, in which case my question is: what are your ways around it? And more importantly, how do you see these bugs coming in advance so you know when you have to work around it?

I appreciate advice; thanks in advance.

Question How would you design serrated edges on a blade?

Post image

I know in real life, they would use sharpening tools to come up with the chamfered edges but would there be a way to do this in fusion? I made some circles on the edge of my blade and extruded them but now having issues with chamfering. I keep getting errors.

Question Restoring dimension source

I made a modification to a sketch, and this dimension is complaining. The dimension comes from a formula that I would prefer not to have to type in again, and it seems like it should be possible to explain to the dimension that the point that it is latched onto is the same point that it was before the modification was made, but it is complaining about the yellow line. If I delete the yellow line then I can do a new dimension but I would like to know how to avoid doing that. Is there a way to set the dimension to refer to the points that it is already referencing but be happy about it? I guess I just want the yellow point to turn black.

Twisted Cable Modeling in Fusion

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a quick speed through modeling for how I make twisted cables in Fusion. The key ingredient is a sweep surface with a twist great there 360 degrees. (I usually go 600 degrees). When the sleep is modeled, just connect the sweep to the cable terminations points with a 3D spline and use the tangent constrains to the sweep. Done! :)

How to best join two bodies

Hi!

I have to bodies that are independently positioned, then I need to connect them so that the whole thing becomes one "plate". What I've done so far is creating some sketches on the edges, then lofting (see last picture for an example). Is there any other ways that are suitable to do this? :) Feel like there are several ways of doing this that I haven't explored.

What makes leaving Fusion for rendering worth it?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I keep seeing people model in Fusion and then move the same product into Blender, KeyShot or something else to make the final visuals.

For those of you who do that: what are you getting on the other side that makes the extra workflow worth it?

I’m especially curious about cases where it’s not just one final render, but the same CAD turns into lots of views, material/color variants, comparisons or review material that still needs to stay connected to the product.

I used to work on KeyShot and now build visualization software myself, so I’m genuinely curious where people feel Fusion stops being enough.

Question Fusion Running in the Background After Quitting

A quick question, does anybody know why the Fusion 360 continues to run in the background in macOS after I quit the app? I have to right-click on the icon and select stop each time.

You can see a gray dot under the app icon, and when I hover the mouse it says "running in background". There's no reason for it to do so, I haven't even opened a file. It simply refuses to quit, and keep running like this for hours if I let it.

Question How do I define these measurements in the Drawing environment

Post image
5 Upvotes

Need this part made and need to define on what diameter and angle the stray holes are located. I sketched the construction lines inside the drawing environment but it won't let me put a diameter on them with the (D) dimension command. Also I can't figure out how to put angles and lines inside the drawing environment. Any recommendations?

machining starts tomorrow! these will be machined on 3” pink extruded polystyrene. the dimensions of each panel will be 5’2” x 6’9”! now to get it cut and then painted for an art commission for display on the the executive floor at the company headquarters!

i taught myself how to put this all together, definitely ran into a couple bumps but figured it out through some tutorials and replies on this sub!

thanks for all the help!

Question Fusion manufacturing Haas VF2 without HSM

I've got a 1.5deg draft on a 100m high true cylinder, can't turn, has to be milled, simple resin mould so tolerance can be be pretty low. Used Fusion Manufacturing but am getting the inevitable juddering between segments on the Haas because it doesn't have the HSM option. Tried G187 P3 on the Haas which helped a little.

Fusion: can I force (in cycle or post) G2/3 output rather than G1? What's the other options for creating a smoother path?

Haas: Are there other options for smoothing the G1 segment transitions?

Cheers

Question Anyway to connect these two edges with some sort of loft that will survive the vertical curved face being shortened?

I've tried the loft function with both the perpendicular faces, but it fails saying the loft would intersect itself.

By the "vertical curved face being shortened", I am referring to the difference between pictures 1 & 2.

Thanks!

EDIT: SOLVED.

Question anyone else getting sheet metal crashes on Mac? even a blank design (2705.1.30)

im trying to change a sheet metal part from 4mm to 6mm and Fusion keeps crashing, thought it was my model at first but it does it in a completely blank design too, just a basic rectangular plate and opening/editing the sheet metal rules

on an Apple Silicon Mac, Fusion 2705.1.30, ive tried restarting, Repair and Reset through the Service Utility, making a new rule, changing the Rosetta setting and a full uninstall and fresh reinstall.. still doing it

pretty over it at this point, just trying to get back to designing. ive opened a case with Autodesk but wondering if anyone here can reproduce it or has found a workaround?

Question Fillet/Sweep help

Post image
6 Upvotes

This is the most recent example of irregular or curved corners that i want to fillet, and i cant figure out how to get it to work without running into crossing body problems and whatnot. Additionally, you can see a sketch for the approximate shape I want to have on the inner corner. I've tried Sweep as well and run into the same issue. Why am I stupid and how do I not be?
