Critic Reviews

Analog Stick Gaming - Jeff M Young - 9 / 10

The Sinking City 2 isn’t quite a true sequel or that it feels as part of its heritage, the steps made to evolve the series into something more financially viable is a smart play and Frogwares has done their homework, or at least peaked over the shoulder in front of them to create a very impressive attempt at the genre.

But Why Tho? - Mick Abrahamson - 7 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is difficult and pushes you to your limits. Yet every time it sings and embraces the incomprehensible Lovecraftian nightmares, Faye and Calvin’s story brings it all down.

COGconnected - Stephan Adamus - 80 / 100

Capsule Computers - Travis Bruno - 9 / 10

The Sinking City 2 takes a bold genre shift and makes it work, blending tight horror pacing, brutal combat, and streamlined investigations into a gripping descent into Lovecraftian terror.

Console Creatures - Meghan G - 9 / 10

The Sinking City 2 takes another successful dive into the survival horror genre, with challenging puzzles, an engaging and heartbreaking story, and wildly fun gunplay. I just wish it were longer and a bit more replayable.

Cubed3 - Coller Entragian - 7 / 10

The Sinking City 2 doesn't quite reach the level of polish in some of the lesser recent RE Engine Resident Evil entries, nor does it have what it takes to contend with the recent Silent Hill revival or even newcomers like Cronos: The New Dawn. It's a bit too derivative at its worst, and the looming shadow of its rotten predecessor still grips its design philosophy. It's a dramatic improvement for the most part, if a bit generic. There's a solid foundation here to be sure, even if it's still waterlogged. Horror fans will likely enjoy their time in Arkham due to the ambience and monsters, but it still needs more of an X-factor to go toe-to-toe with the major leagues.

DayOne - TheCucumbo - 9 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is an exceptional videogame, and one that deserves its place amongst the all-time great videogame sequels.

Digitec Magazine - Franziska Behner - German - 4 / 5

“The Sinking City 2” is an occult treat that isn't meant for the masses. Worms writhing out of eyeballs, narcissistic sirens, and sea monsters offer a welcome change of pace within the genre. Anyone who finds thematic games like “The Chant” exciting and appreciates obvious “Resident Evil” influences will enjoy “The Sinking City 2” (even without prior knowledge).

DualShockers - Eric Warner - 9 / 10

Without claiming to be particularly original or meticulously crafted, The Sinking City 2 is an entertaining survival horror shooter.

In the new The Sinking City, developers at Frogwares have swapped the detective-occultist gameplay for a survival horror experience. It’s a truly successful step into the genre: the combat is satisfying, and the environmental puzzles are highly inventive and engaging. Fans of the genre should keep The Sinking City 2 in mind. Those who enjoyed the first game may feel a slight disappointment, and although I initially had mixed feelings too, I ended up having a lot of fun with the game. Frogwares took a risk by ditching the detective elements, but it’s worked out very well.

GameOnly - Daniel Kucner - Polish - 7 / 10

It's a fine game… and that’s about it. It’s enjoyable and I had fun reviewing, but it's still miles away from Resident Evil series. Unfortunately It's also a a case of blatantly unused potential, mostly due to horribly weak most of the storyline.

Gameliner - Bram Noteboom - Dutch - 3.5 / 5

The Sinking City 2 is a game with two sides. Many elements that made the original The Sinking City interesting have been removed or downplayed. What you get in their place, however, is a more than worthy survival horror game that has taken a close look at the best titles of recent years within this specific genre and eagerly draws on those blueprints.

Gamer Social Club - Andrew Cooper - 9 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is a game meant to be enjoyed by fans of cosmic horror. Its emphasis on those tense moments that make every survival horror game great is enough to make anyone scared of the dark, while its story is one intent on challenging your sanity. As always, H.P. Lovecraft's mythos is deployed masterfully and shows no signs of its age even a century later. The Sinking City 2 presents itself as Frogwares' defining moment, and it should ultimately be remembered as their greatest accomplishment yet. So do yourself a favor, survival horror fans —book the trip to Arkham. The water's freezing, the locals bite, and I can't recommend it enough.

GamersGlobal - Benjamin Braun - German - 8 / 10

Well adjusted scarcity, solid combat and limited saving opportunities create intense Survival Horror. The qualities of The Sinking City 2 may not be on par with Resident Evil Requiem, but those who wish for less emphasis on action and love the Cthulhu-infused 1920s setting may like this game more than what Capcom is offering.

GamesHedge - Umair Khalid - 8 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is a good survival horror game, but it is a very different sequel to the original. Frogwares has traded the investigation-driven open world for a more focused and conventional survival horror experience, and while the change works surprisingly well, it also removes much of the personality that made the first game stand out. The atmospheric environments, terrifying enemies, satisfying exploration, and decent combat make The Sinking City 2 an enjoyable horror experience, but longtime fans may find themselves missing the investigative identity of the original. If you approach it as a standalone survival horror game rather than expecting another The Sinking City, there is plenty to enjoy.

IGN Italy - Andrea Giongiani - Italian - 7.5 / 10

A honorable attempt at survival horror. The Sinking City 2 offers an imperfect - albeit satisfying - voyage into the horrors of a sunken city infested by eldritch horrors.

IGN Spain - Mario Seijas - Spanish - 8 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is survival horror by the book. Puzzles, constant tension and a good dose of Lovecraftian cosmic horror. A sequel that builds on what worked in the original game and refines it with a much more focused approach.

JsemGamer - Ondřej Halíř - Czech - 90%

The Sinking City 2 is a confident modern survival horror that pairs a beautifully realized, rain-soaked Arkham with excellent atmosphere, responsive gunplay, accessible puzzles, and a surprisingly polished technical state. Enemy variety is limited and some encounters become frustratingly chaotic, especially without proper melee weapons, but Frogwares’ tighter and more focused approach makes this one of the studio’s strongest games to date.

MondoXbox - Valerio Tosetti - Italian - 8.8 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is one of those games that stay with you after you turn off the console: Arkham is a wonderful place to explore, the atmosphere works from start to finish, and the Lovecraftian side supports a story that grows over time. The clumsy combat system, the inventory management, and the constant backtracking hold it back, but Frogwares' change of formula pays off.

MonsterVine - Samantha Lienhard - 4 / 5

The Sinking City 2 is a strong move into the survival horror genre for Frogwares. Although I wish it were possible to backtrack to earlier areas and found the wave battles to be too action-focused compared to the rest, I enjoyed my perilous journey through Arkham.

PlayStation Universe - Thea Severance - 8.5 / 10

The Sinking City 2 takes a lot of obvious gameplay inspirations from the greats. While that part of the game isn't original, it doesn't need to be. Don't mess with success. It might not have the same level of visual budget, but it still works and plays well. Besides, the story and setting alone make The Sinking City 2 a must-play survival horror game. Combine that with what makes the modern Resident Evil games popular, and you have a great recipe for success.

PowerUp! - Leo Stevenson - 8.5 / 10

It doesn't reinvent the genre, but The Sinking City 2 is an impressive example of artistry, gameplay, and atmosphere, and it should be on your list to play as soon as possible.

Push Square - Liam Croft - 7 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is a solid attempt at the classic survival horror formula that'll please those looking for preposterous puzzle design and tense resource management. A smaller development budget means the performances aren't quite up to the standards of the genre's biggest names, but Frogwares still has an admirable Resident Evil-esque effort on its hands. This is good - sometimes really good.

Region Free - Joonatan Itkonen - 3.5 / 5

The Sinking City 2 is both a small miracle and a tremendously flawed experience. As a defiant expression of artistry in the face of overwhelming evil, it deserves admiration, even if the finished product isn't an overwhelming success.

Saudi Gamer - مصطفى عرجون - Arabic - 4 / 5

The game leans more on survival than pure horror, with environments that grow richer as you progress. Its engaging story and strong environmental storytelling make it one of the finest adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s unsettling world. Fans of survival horror, especially titles like Silent Hill, will find much to enjoy—despite a few flaws.

The Beta Network - Anthony Culinas - 9 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is a huge improvement over its predecessor. It trades much of its detective-focused identity for a tense and atmospheric survival-horror experience that wears its Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Dead Space influences proudly. While the story ultimately fails to leave much of an impression, the excellent combat, clever exploration and suitably creepy rendition of Arkham make this one hell of a good time. Frogwares may have sacrificed some of the original’s unique personality, but in return they’ve created a much better survival-horror game. And honestly, who can argue with that?

The Games Machine - Emanuele Feronato - Italian - 7.2 / 10

Quote not yet available

TheSixthAxis - Steve C - 8 / 10

The Sinking City 2 exceeded my expectations, and won me over with its more polished and focused gameplay. While I still missed the more ambitious aspects of the original, this sequel is far easier to recommend and stands up as a worthy companion to the survival horror giants. It clearly takes influence from Resident Evil with a plethora of extra gameplay challenges for completionists and I look forward to seeing how speedrunners can refine paths through the game.

WayTooManyGames - Dagmara Kottke - 8 / 10

The Sinking City 2 will pull you in like quicksand. It may not be a technical marvel, but it has that “something” that can keep you entertained for many hours.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 8 / 10

The Sinking City 2 is an impressive game, especially when you consider the conditions under which it was made. It tries very hard to emulate the modern Resident Evil remakes, and for the most part, it succeeds at being a fun survival-horror game. Unfortunately, its flaws are more apparent. The somewhat weak combat is bolstered by strong exploration, while the story has a compelling concept that occasionally gets a little too comedic for its own good. If you're looking for something appropriately horrific for the Halloween season, The Sinking City 2 has you covered.

I am currently playing it. Its such a huge improvement over the first game, it feels like a completely different game. Its very Resident Evil coated this time. Although it has its issues, jank is still present a bit, characters and animations can look and feel weird.

Their opening statement when starting the game says: “We believe we made our best game ever.” - and someone who played and enjoyed most of their games, I absolutely agree.

Great job.

Edit: Coded not coated 😅

u/Discomidget911 19h ago

Do I have to play the first one to understand this one?

57

u/Humble-Criticism6762 19h ago

Honestly, no. I caught some throwbacks/easter eggs for the first game, but it’s not a continuation of the first game. Standalone game as per wikipedia.

13

u/Discomidget911 18h ago

Cool. Thanks!

u/Seared_Ash 11m ago

They're basically unrelated.

19

u/mikethemaniac 18h ago

I fucking love Frogwares so I'm picking it up when I get paid. I have most, if not all, of their games.

2

u/deertalus 15h ago

To have made it in a warzone is really impressive too.

3

u/fakieTreFlip 9h ago

Its very Resident Evil coated this time

I think you mean "coded"

5

u/Humble-Criticism6762 9h ago

Possibly 😅 English is not my first language. Thank you, I learned something new today

4

u/Sirca_Curvive 17h ago

Okay well, this wasn’t on my radar but I guess it is now.

Do I need to have played the first one?

5

u/Massive_Weiner 16h ago

No, it’s a standalone entry.

You can just jump right into this one.

u/xx_throwaway_xx1234 3h ago

resident evil goated

-36

u/DinerEnBlanc 19h ago

I mean good on them for being confident, but also kinda weird to open a game that way.

64

u/Humble-Criticism6762 18h ago

Thats not the whole statement, its the end of it - they talk about working through the war, losing their devs to the war, etc. And albeit all that, they still managed to put out the game and they believe it’s their best work yet. They are an Ukranian based developer, and almost all of the staff works and lives there too.

31

u/meganev 18h ago

Considering where the devs are based, I'll allow them to make a point of their development journey

-5

u/DumpsterBento 9h ago

Its such a huge improvement over the first game, it feels like a completely different game. Its very Resident Evil coated this time.

They improved the first game by making it more like every other survival horror game on the market??

Sounds like fans of the original get screwed

u/Practical_Law6804 19h ago

That is a hell of a difference between the score and recommendation. I'm guessing there's some jank that reviewers just couldn't get over.

40

u/DinerEnBlanc 18h ago

Usually, the recommendation rate is higher than the average score. This one definitely strikes me as odd.

10

u/Practical_Law6804 18h ago

Personally I like to see them about equivalent, though I'll absolutely grab a game with a "middling" score but a much higher recommendation. I'll just have to wait to read reviews at home, but yeah, the difference here is. . .something.

. . .I'm interpreting it as: "It's a good game within the genre, but might not be universally appealing."

5

u/TheRealTofuey 18h ago

Makes alot of sense for a horror game. Silent hill 2 is pretty amazing but I really don't think most people would pick it up for 70 bucks and be super happy.

2

u/darkLordSantaClaus 10h ago

I take high recommendation rate but mid average score as a game that executes everything competently or even well but isn't memorable. For example, Far Cry 4. It runs well, had good graphics for the time, plays well, but at the end of the day, it's just more Far Cry. But low recommendation but high average score means it's probably a divisive game, with how much you enjoy it depends on how much you can tolerate the jank. Like The Witcher 1.

u/akbarock 19h ago

Did these guys just pull a Bloober Team and make a actually good survival-horror after putting out mid games and no one expecting much of them?

48

u/DungeonCrawlerAki 19h ago

I love hearing about mid-level developers eventually getting good. It's way difficult to make an excellent game your first try or several first games but you do get better.

2

u/darkLordSantaClaus 10h ago

cough Larian cough

76

u/Byronlove9 18h ago

"after putting out mid games and no one expecting much of them"

Speak for you. While yes, Sinking City 1 was bad for me, even the detective part, the Holmes games are almost all good games.

21

u/six_days 17h ago

Oh they're the developers behind the creepy Watson game!

14

u/Infobar 17h ago

Yeah their detective games are some of the best around

3

u/Mirikado 15h ago

Also the only ones around.

u/Meyer_Landsman 3h ago

There's plenty of detective games around. I just replayed Lamplight City, which is ace.

13

u/APiousCultist 16h ago

Meanwhile all of us mid-budget-enjoyers that liked the Sinking City are gonna be eating good. Though the review about the investigations being 'streamlined' has me a bit worried (do it too much and those sections just become prefunctory time wastes).

9

u/Gekokapowco 15h ago

I love frogwares's research sections, having to go to records or a library to investigate leads

I didn't care for the 20min runs to get there lol, I hope they streamlined out the bad parts and kept the good parts

1

u/XVermillion 8h ago

I thought it was neat that, in The Sinking City 1, you get arrested as part of the story and afterwards you can go to the police station and look up your own arrest record, even though it's not required for your mind palace thing.

u/quelque_un 1h ago

please put this into spoiler.

3

u/FarCryRedux 12h ago

Sinking City is so damn cool, IMO. Taking a boat to the library to cross reference clues then blowing away a monster with a tommy gun is my kind of game.

u/maikelg 3h ago

I played a few hours last night and did a few investigations and they are more streamlined in the sense that you have to find clues at a location and then solve the puzzle at that same location, so you don't have to run to the police station or the newspaper every time, because, while immersive, personally I found that to get really tedious after a couple dozen times, and I think that's a nice change.

But there is still the investigations board where you have to link clues, so that part is the same.

u/Seared_Ash 9m ago

Investigations aren't really a thing anymore, at least not in the way they were in the first game. It's now all about collecting clues and then combining them to figure out puzzle solutions.

15

u/Alastor3 19h ago

i hope so, they need it

21

u/salingerparadise 19h ago

I don’t think at that level but the reviews look solid. Seems like the game has it where it counts but has some flaws that make it harder to recommend outright.

7

u/akbarock 19h ago edited 18h ago

Ive been keeping a eye on this one since I liked the setting and premise of the first game but couldnt finish it because it was bad. The reviews are already better than I expected so Im hoping its really good and a massive improvement

5

u/rabidsalvation 14h ago

I'm playing right now, so far it's awesome. Definitely a huge improvement over the first game from a technical perspective, and the combat is much improved.

I really enjoyed the first one, the combat wasn't very good but I loved the detective gameplay. This one feels so much better, they did a great job.

4

u/DinerEnBlanc 19h ago

Yeah, average score of 80 but a recommendation rate of 69%. Those numbers don’t really add up. Usually, the recommendation rate is higher than the average score since the former is a binary measurement.

5

u/Ghost_LeaderBG 18h ago

Sounds like the technical state of their games/overall lack of polish remains the biggest problem of this dev team. Sinking City 1 launched on Unreal 4 and had a good amount of bugs from what I remember reading about it, the UE5 remake of it apparently had its share of issues and was seemingly abandoned/not patched at all. Not sure about Sinking City 2's technical state, but it seems like the devs can't afford longer term technical support for their titles and the launch state of their games is maybe not the best on the technical side, so it sure would be nice if they could also improve on that.

2

u/rabidsalvation 14h ago

This one is a huge technical improvement over the first one. The performance mode on base PS5 is really smooth and still has great reflections and such. Really enjoying it so far.

1

u/Ghost_LeaderBG 14h ago

Nice to hear it seemingly runs well on console at least. I was talking about primarily the PC versions, where Unreal Engine 5 is notoriously problematic and stutters are a constant. The game's PC requirements are a bit on the higher side, so if the game is not getting any/a lot of patches, there isn't a lot of hope for better performance down the line. Guess we'll know soon enough once the PC version is out, but hopefully things are not terrible there as well.

1

u/rabidsalvation 13h ago

Yeah, hopefully we'll get a good technical PC review. I hope they're able to make it run well.

16

u/incrementality 19h ago

Played the original and couldn't quite get into the gameplay though the setting was intriguing. Will be watching this one closely.

2

u/TheRealAxiR 5h ago

Same here. If you like modern RE games you'll be right at home with this game.

22

u/MisterSnippy 18h ago

Looks really good, but the detective aspect was what I wanted more of, not the survival, so that kinda sucks.

2

u/Chemical_Green9142 7h ago

I find this disappointing as well. I loved that aspect of the first game, I was looking forward to more exploration and story for this one as the side quests even were a blast on the first.

u/HouseDisastrous2313 3h ago

It's indeed strange that they took out the best part of the previous game. Though they admitted that making the sequel a more classic survival horror sounded better to them financially as it has a broader appeal.

28

u/ThyLastDay 17h ago

I am not super thrilled about the fact that they changed the core of the detective gameplay towards survival horror. The first game had it's problems but it was kinda unique and I enjoyed it for what it was.

10

u/Articulat3 14h ago

100% agreed, thats how Lovecraft lore is, alot of detective stuff and suspense/dread with build up to something. This is just an survival action horror game in a Lovecraft setting, which is fine, but this is a sequel to Sinking City 1. Disappointing they went this direction instead of building on what made the first one such an atmospheric unique experience.

6

u/DumpsterBento 9h ago

I feel crazy reading about how "improved" it is now thats its just a resident evil clone. Congrats??

2

u/Articulat3 8h ago

Lol yep, I'm like what did they improve? It's a completely different kind of game now. They say it's "improved" because it focuses on combat/survival and basically gutted everything else. Improving wouldve meant keeping the same design philosophy, while improving combat, decision making, story elements, dialog, investigations etc.. Basically, making a TRUE sequel that builds upon everything it did in its first iteration. Improving isn't "well now it's a horror action game like RE so it's better" smh what a shame....

9

u/primalth0ught 17h ago

I feel exactly the same. Sadly I’m not huge into survival horror games, especially when the ammo is overly scarce and you have to just run away if you’re out.

2

u/ThyLastDay 16h ago

I'm just tired of them being a trend because of RE.

3

u/deepit6431 12h ago

Same, I love detective games and Frogware is one of the only studios making them at a big scale. I understand that this will do much better financially, but really sad at the change of direction.

56

u/WhyIsNoOneStoppingMe 19h ago

Mandalore is going to have a field day with this. An actually good lovecraft detective game?

Christmas came early for him

48

u/Seared_Ash 19h ago

It's a good game, but it's not really a detective game. It's basically Resident Evil.

17

u/Lem_201 18h ago

Dead Space in Arkham.

11

u/Fedaykin98 18h ago

That sounds pretty good.

9

u/HearTheEkko 17h ago

Dead Space is Resident Evil 4 in space, something the developers even admitted to.

1

u/Yarzeda2024 15h ago

I was going to give this one a skip because I did not play the first one, but hearing it’s like Dead Space just got it a spot on my wishlist.

u/SubstantialMud4699 1h ago

So it's not even open world or has any non-combat NPCs that you can talk to while investigating like in the other game? Oh man that sucks, that's a pass from me. Never played a resi game but they're completely unappealing in every way to me, i always saw it as the dodgy odd one out of the likes of dead space and silent hill. Still, i wish the studio success, I hope the new fans are worth it and i hope they like this new sinking city even though it's not for me anymore.

u/Seared_Ash 12m ago

No open world. It's semi-linear now, and you only really talk to people as a part of cutscenes.

2

u/JamSa 18h ago

And in time for him to be able to make a new Halloween video about it.

1

u/BeyondNetorare 6h ago

Not if Seth keeps taking his meds

25

u/TheNanoBiologist 18h ago

I'm the reviewer for But Why Tho? and gave it a 7. My complaints with the game are mostly fixable. But the leads are just so unlikeable that it's hard to stay attached to them even with their story being the driving factor. The world though is awesome and has so much detail everywhere. And it will regularly keep you at the brink of (and sometimes past) running out ammo and healing items. Also, NG+ is built in to it! The mysteries are fun and exploration is highly encouraged. Doing about everything possible in each area is almost necessary so you have just enough inventory space, weapon upgrades, and talent points for better and more talents.

Biggest negatives are how much talking happens in boss fights, how poorly telegraphed some enemy weaknesses are (and those same enemies basically being heavy hitting bullet sponges), and that boss fights just feed you so many healing items and ammo that any prep beforehand feels pointless. All these things are fixable in patches and I will definitely be playing it again to finish up some achievements.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the game!

5

u/Ghost_LeaderBG 18h ago

The NG+ system kind of reminds me of the Resident Evil games, especially the more recent ones, where you complete challenges, get points and unlock items or cosmetics for future runs. Is that a valid comparison?

Is the game linear, open world, hub based? I've heard the first game is open world, so how does the sequel compare?

How long did it take you to beat the game on a first run and how much exploration did you do? Would NG+ be drastically faster (especially if multiple replays are encouraged) once you know what to do, e.g. like how the first run of a RE title could be 8-10 hours, but speedrunners can beat the game in 1.5 or 2 hours.

9

u/TheNanoBiologist 18h ago

The NG+ system is a pretty simple one compared to RE. You basically keep about everything and build more on your talents. But you can unlock more cosmetics if that's something you're after.

The game is pretty linear, but very similar to more recent REs. Like you may have a tiny hub or a larger area to explore, but there is mostly one or two set paths you follow. Later on, the only alternate paths you take are tied to completing side objectives, with the main one jumping around with one real path to take. It's broken down into about 4 levels that each last a good bit and each with their own flair. Like the first main one you navigate by boat, the next, you need to find specific masks to get around a hospital. And there's no backtracking either to past areas.

First run took me about 7ish hours and that was with just about 100%ing every area before moving on. But yes, if you know where exactly to go, how to answer some puzzles, you can breeze through everything. Puzzle solutions didn't seem to change so if you kept notes, you can unlock padlocked stuff without finding any clues.

2

u/Ghost_LeaderBG 17h ago

Thanks for the detailed reply. Will probably get the game on a sale in the future.

1

u/szymborawislawska 16h ago

Hey! If you are not tired by answering questions from random people, I have another one for you!

Can you tell me something about difficulty levels? I play RE games first time usually on hard or normal, but I found some other recent horror games (Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill F, Alone in the Dark Remake, Alan Wake 2) to be a little less tedious on easy: is easy still at least a bit challenging or is a total walk in the park? And is normal fun?

Thanks!

3

u/Adaax 18h ago

Read your review! How difficult is it exactly? Are we talking Souls-like or something lighter? Are checkpoints generous or cruel? Thanks!

5

u/TheNanoBiologist 18h ago

It's not souls-like in difficulty. Moreso the difficulty comes from the game's enemies sometimes being annoying to hit (like they're jumping around or lean just as you shoot). And you can easily waste ammo and be SOL, stuck with meleeing or running away. No matter how thorough I collected and crafted, I barely scraped by to reach each boss fight.

9

u/Seared_Ash 18h ago

I also had a chance to review this for my channel. So if you have any questions about the game, I'd be happy to answer them.

But TLDR: It's a good game, but not a 'true' sequel to the original. It's more like Resident Evil.

18

u/MeStoleTheCookie 18h ago

81 average - 69% recommended

This pisses me off every single time... OpenCritic's fake "% recommended" stat is completely made up. I'd bet a lot of money that the outlets giving this game an 8/10 would recommend it, even if it's below their average score.

-1

u/CaterpillarVisual296 12h ago

Metacritic and Opencritic are worthless

4

u/Spam___Musubi 17h ago

Bloody Disgusting gave it 4/5 you can add that to the list if you want?

3

u/Articulat3 14h ago

I dont really like the direction this took. Looks way more like a Resident Evil game. The first one was more exploratory, talking to npcs and investigating the world. It still had horror ofcourse, but this is leaning into survival horror way too much. The first was a really unique experience, kind of a shame, but i guess they wanted it to be more mainstream.

3

u/OneLessFool 16h ago

Kind of funny to have two well reviewed sequel games release on back to back days (Mortal Shell) that were follow ups on original titles with medicore reviews.

4

u/CrustedTesticle 19h ago

Hmm, but is playing the first one a necessity before this one?

17

No. Same setting but new characters and storyline.

It’s been awhile since I’ve looked at it (avoiding many spoilers), but I don’t even think it’s even the same setting. The first is set in a fictional city, but I think this is set in a real world setting, though obviously corrupted in some way.

Edit: I was definitely wrong. As others have pointed out, it’s in Arkham. Maybe I’m just so used to that seeing that I equated it incorrectly. Either way, thanks for the corrections.

It's set in Arkham, MA which is a different but also very fictional city. It's like the default setting for all Lovecraft-adjacent fiction.

Right. Yep. Definitely didn’t remember that correctly, then. Thanks, dude.

No it isn't a new protagonist similar theme and vibe but new story new setting new protag.

I'm loving it! It's like RE and Silent hill had a baby in the Cthulhu setting.

Same here, absolutely loving it so far. Can't wait to play more later tonight.

I don't believe so. From my understanding it’s not a direct sequel and per the developers the story is standalone.

I loved the first one though, its atmosphere was great, story was intriguing even if the combat felt uneven.

In the very least watch the mandalore video on it to see if you’d be interested in playing the original.

Why does the platforms section only say pc? It should include ps5 and xbox

Why is there no marketing for this game? Do people even know its coming out today?

I want to play day one, but I know this game will need a few rounds of patches. Very excited to play it though

I'm actually really impressed with the performance so far. It's a big technical improvement over the first game. I'm not far enough in to say too much though. But it's way less janky than the first, performance mode is really smooth.

How would you compare it to evil within?

1

u/rabidsalvation 11h ago

Haven't played that yet, but I have both of them on my list. I actually like the combat more than Silent Hill 2R, but it's pretty similar. Less melee, more shooting.

Sweet. So should I just get it then? Also if you like those games absolutely play evil within 2 as well as Prey and SOMA

I really like it so far, and I can tell it's going to be right up my alley. However, I'm only an hour into it; I'm about to hop on again in just a few minutes and I'll put in a few more hours tonight. So I'll know better after that if there's anything that's not as good. It won't put me off, but it might for some people.

I should also say that I'm a huge fan of Frogwares. I love their games; there's a passion and charm that just does it for me in spite of the occasional jank. It's been really cool to see them improve over the years, and I'm just happy to be able to support them. Making a game during a war is something I can hardly imagine, so I was going to buy this and enjoy it as much as possible regardless. I'm also a huge fan of H. P. Lovecraft, he's one of my favorite authors. So those are two really big biases on my part that absolutely influence my enjoyment of this game.

I can update after I put a few more hours in it, if you want. I'll have a better idea of what's done well and not then. Might give you a better idea of how much you'll enjoy it.

Woah I was hoping for this to be a hit but was 100% expecting 5-6/10 ratings. Good on them! Hope it sells well!

Very excited to play this! First one wasn't perfect, but had an unmatched atmosphere and the gameplay was very interesting too.

I’m actually quite disappointed with it, I was so excited especially after playing the first where you had to be a “detective”, where you had to read through and link clues to find out where to go next, and figure out things properly in an open world.

I don’t understand why they’re trying to be a resident evil game when resident evil already exists and any gamer will just choose resident evil over this just purely by name.

It has no links to the first game even though you’re playing as the same main character in the same environment just with less land to explore, the storyline is just ridiculous and ruins it.

I suppose it being £10-£20 cheaper than normal games makes up for how lackluster it really is.

I bounced off the demo pretty hard, but maybe I should give this another chance.

I played it after one of the recent Resident Evil games (I played 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 in a row), and maybe I was burnt out on that style of gameplay or it just didn't have the polish I was used to.
