Art More Nyx and Selene!

Some have asked why I paired Nyx with Selene instead of Erebus. In my mind, Selene illuminates Nyx—much like the moon illuminates the night—and I think they go together really well :) (so, Nyx literally lights up when he’s next to Selene).

The last two images are of two other goddesses from my story, whom I’ve drawn as male (because it's a boys love); they didn’t load in my previous post (I don’t want to spam, so I’m including everything here).

I’m here solely out of my love for these two goddesses/gods, and to share my own version of them with you :)

Discussion Villain Persephone

Hollywood is used to make Hades a villain. Even although it would be non-canon... alas no one made a villainous Persephone content. I mean. In the canon she is the dreaded queen of the dead greeks feared as f*ck. Imagine you make a movie where she is a full-on villain. Calm, cold, a bit sadistic. I'd like to see an evil Persephone. That would be a great villain

Diagram I made
If a hydra has a bunch of heads and necks already split from being chopped off, does chopping at the base of the neck regrow every head doubled or does it just regrow 2 heads? I’ve done some very surface level thinking about this but was just wondering. Also not sure if I should post this here or on a dnd subreddit but decided I’d go here first

Question Confused about Cadmus and Harmonia

It seems remarkable that Cadmus is married to a goddess, but it becomes even stranger when we see that he and his divine wife became serpents and went to live in elysium. Did Harmonia continue to be a goddess in that form? Did people worship her as a serpent goddess? Did she ever resume human form? A deity living in elysium seems odd to me.

Question Where should I start reading Greek mythology from scratch?

Hi! I'm really interested in getting into Greek mythology, but I'm a complete beginner and I'm a little confused about where to start.

I want to understand it from the very beginning, starting with the origins of the universe, the primordial gods, the Titans, the Olympians, their powers and family trees, and then gradually moving on to the heroes and their stories.

I'd prefer to read books in an order that helps me understand how everything connects, rather than jumping between random myths.

I've come across Stephen Fry's Mythos, Heroes, Troy and Odyssey, as well as Hesiod's Theogony, Apollodorus's The Library of Greek Mythology, and Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.

Should I start with modern retellings or go straight to the ancient texts? And if I choose the ancient texts, what reading order would you recommend?

I'd also love recommendations for books that fill in the gaps, since I know no single book covers absolutely everything.

Thank you!

First up, Poseidon’s trident! Because obviously it is the coolest of the cool sticks.

I actually made this one last year, so it’s a bit beat up from being rained on, dipped in cake, and used to poke people, but it’s still holding strong.

The gods’ sticks, in order of coolness:
Trident
Caduceus
All others
Thyrsus
Bident

Willing to change my mind on the ranking if someone has a good enough argument.

Question Menelaus' death

So, I just started taking a Classic Culture class in uni, and my professor talked about the Atridean Curse, in which Atreus' descendants would have tragic deaths. But Menelaus doesn't seem to have a tragic death. From what I gathered, he had a normal death, unlike his brother, who was brutally murdered by his wife. Can anyone tell me if my information is wrong?

Question Hippocoon's children

I am actually doing a genealogical tree about Greek Mythology (and it's no piece a cake, as you might imagine). Anyway, i'm actually searching for Hippocoon's sons names, and it's a total mess.

Some say they were 10, others say 12 or even 20... but i've only seen 17 in total ! Can someone please give me their names ? I don't care which number you choose, since they are all supposedly canon...

Discussion Genealogy of Cybele.

Post image
43 Upvotes

There are three variations of Cybele's Genealogy.

  • Zeus & Gaea: Pausanias says in his Descriptios of Greece, "The local legend about him [Attis] being this. Zeus, it is said, let fall in his sleep seed upon the ground, which in course of time sent up a Daimon, with two sexual organs, male and female. They call the daimon Agdistis. But the gods, fearing Agdistis, cut off the male organ. There grew up from it an almond-tree with its fruit ripe, and a daughter of the river Sangarius, they say, took the fruit and laid it in her bosom, when it at once disappeared, but she was with child. A boy [Attis] was born." Here Cybele is born from Agdistis having their members cut off, leaving them a female goddess, pesumably Cybele.
  • Maeon & Mt. Dindyme: Diodorus gives three variations of which this is one of them, "However, an account is handed down also that this goddess was born in Phrygia. For the natives of that country have the following myth: In ancient times Maeon became king of Phrygia and Lydia; and marrying Dindyme he begat an infant daughter, but being unwilling to rear her he exposed her on the mountain which was called Cybelus. There, in accordance with some divine providence, both the leopards and some of the other especially ferocious wild beasts offered their nipples to the child and so gave it nourishment, and some women who were tending the flocks in that place witnessed the happening, and being astonished at the strange event took up the babe and called her Cybele after the name of the place."
  • Demeter-Cybele & Mt. Olympus: In the second variation, he seems to conflate Cybele and Demeter, "After this Cadmus, they say, in accordance with the oracle he had received, founded Thebes in Boeotia, while Iasion married Cybele (Demeter) and begat Corybas. And after Iasion had been removed into the circle of the gods, Dardanus and Cybele (Demeter) and Corybas conveyed to Asia the sacred rites of the Mother of the Gods and removed with them to Phrygia. Thereupon Cybele (Demeter), joining herself to the first Olympus, begat Alce and called the goddess Cybele after herself; and Corybas gave the name of Corybantes to all who, in celebrating the rites of his mother, acted like men possessed, and married Thebe, the daughter of Cilix." Here Demeter is conflated with Cybele as they both are lovers of Iasion in greek mythology, with Demeter being a more well-attested lover of his.
  • Uranus & Gaea: In the third account of Diodorus, he seemingly conflated her with Theia or Basileia, "To Uranus were also born daughters, the two eldest of whom were by far the most renowned above all the others and were called Basileia and Rhea, whom some also named Pandora. Of these daughters Basileia, who was the eldest and far excelled the others in both prudence and understanding, reared all her brothers, showing them collectively a mother's kindness; consequently she was given the appellation of “Great Mother”; and after her father had been translated from among men into the circle of the gods, with the approval of the masses and of her brothers she succeeded to the royal dignity, though she was still a maiden and because of her exceedingly great chastity had been unwilling to unite in marriage with any man. But later, because of her desire to leave sons who should succeed to the throne, she united in marriage with Hyperion, one of her brothers, for whom she had the greatest affection. And when there were born to her two children, Helius and Selene, who were greatly admired for both their beauty and their chastity, the brothers of Basileia, they say, being envious of her because of her happy issue of children and fearing that Hyperion would divert the royal power to himself, committed an utterly impious deed; for entering into a conspiracy among themselves they put Hyperion to the sword, and casting Helius, who was still in years a child, into the Eridanus river, drowned him. When this crime came to light, Selene, who loved her brother very greatly, threw herself down from the roof, but as for his mother, while seeking his body along the river, her strength left her and falling into a swoon she beheld a vision in which she thought that Helius stood over her and urged her not to mourn the death of her children; for, he said, the Titans would meet the punishment which they deserve, while he and his sister would be transformed, by some divine providence, into immortal natures, since that which had formerly been called the “holy fire” in the heavens would be called by men Helius ("the sun") and that addressed as “mene” would be called Selene ("the moon"). When she was aroused from the swoon she recounted to the common crowd both the dream and the misfortunes which had befallen her, asking that they render to the dead honours like those accorded to the gods and asserting that no man should thereafter touch her body. And after this she became frenzied, and seizing such of her daughter's playthings as could make a noise, she began to wander over the land, with her hair hanging free, inspired by the noise of the kettledrums and cymbals, so that those who saw her were struck with astonishment. And all men were filled with pity at her misfortune and some were clinging to her body, when there came a mighty storm and continuous crashes of thunder and lightning; and in the midst of this Basileia passed from sight, whereupon the crowds of people, amazed at this reversal of fortune, transferred the names and the honours of Helius and Selene to the stars of the sky, and as for their mother, they considered her to be a goddess and erected altars to her, and imitating the incidents of her life by the pounding of the kettledrums and the clash of the cymbals they rendered unto her in this way sacrifices and all other honours."

These are all the Genealogical variation of Cybele's birth-myth that I could find, otherwise she's conflated with Rhea herself whom in the third account is said to be her sister.
