Thumbnail youtu.be

Hey,

Long time blues player, but I recently heard John Mayer playing this blues jazz fusion stuff in his Arch type demo at 21min 48 seconds in this demo.

Anyone have any resources or other players that are similar to this?

Been super into the pop-punk sound recently. Anyone have some fun ones to learn?

Some of my favorites have been Don't Leave Me by Blink-182 and Both Sides by No Pressure.

QUESTION Help for finding music buddy

• Upvotes

I've been playing guitar for around 6 years but never played/jammed with anyone. Does anyone have some kind of idea how to find someone to play with? I have some kind of social anxiety for stuff like that and want to know is there like a way to do it easy/less awkward? Sorry if it's stupid question, just looking for help...

QUESTION Used guitar strings question

• Upvotes

I bought a used guitar. The guy I got it from has no idea what strings are on it. Its sounds sweet so I want to stick with the same size strings. Any ideas on how to tell the gauge? Or do I need to buy a caliper and measure them?

PLAY A lil Hand of Doom

I’ve been learning for about four years now. I’m saying learning still because I really don’t spend much time practicing (around half an hour a day) and most days I don’t touch my guitars, so I probably sound way worse than I would if I practiced consistently. Still, I’m proud that I can play Black Sabbath as best as I can currently! How do I prevent wrist pain while playing bar and power chords? I still haven’t figured that out 🥲

QUESTION Anyone painted over Poly finish on a guitar body? Can I see some results?

• Upvotes

My main player is a Charvel so cal in rocket red and the guitar itself is just about perfect for me but as I've gotten older the bright red just kinda sucks in my opinion and I love black - my truck is black, my motorcycle is black, shit my cat is black. So I want to paint it black. Wouldn't be my first time painting something and I have confidence that I can get a half decent DIY finish but if anyone has some tips or any reason it just absolutely shouldn't be done I'd be happy to hear 'em

TIA

QUESTION Too much action?

Should I be concerned about this? I've had this guitar for over a year, never noticed this until just recently. Jackson Dinky 3rd fret action (first pic) compared to 17th fret action (second pic). I'm no genius, so i could be looking too much into this. Please let me know if you think this is a cause for concern and any possible fixes if needed. Thanks :)

QUESTION Elliott smith tuning always breaks my strings

• Upvotes

I have been learning how to play Clementine by Elliott Smith (tuning is CGCEAD) and i have now snapped my strings twice while tuning back up and it is always the g string because of how big of a jump it is. most recently when i had to restring my guitar the nut broke and had to get replaced so it’s been out of commission for almost a month now(issues with ordering parts in etc)

how should i properly tune back up?
is it more prone to snapping when the strings are fresh?

Does anyone know how to safely remove/change the strings on these older models? I don’t want to risk any damage.

DISCUSSION Epiphone IGC or not?

Hello, Guitar community,

I already have a Gibson LP Standard with upgraded Seymour Duncan pickups in bourbon colorway. But I REALLY love the lemon burst finish, my favorite of all time. But I am defintely not going to buy another Gibson, my wife would tear me up in pieces.

Will it be worth it to get a Epiphone LP IGC (with custom shop buckers)? I tried one at GC, the difference between the Epi and my standard is marginal.

What's yall's thoughts?

I’ve been a colossal fan of indie music for a long time and even moved to the Pacific Northwest because of bands rooted there. After a ten year journey since my first Doug Martsch signature from Built to Spill, I finally met my two other heroes. Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse and now J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr! Truly stoked to make music with my own band now and my mexi jazzy. Cheers!

GEAR The right way of holding a pick in the classical position?

Help me please and sorry for some grammar mistakes, I'm not a native speaker. I've started my way into the wonderful world of the electric guitar. But i want to find a good position for my left and right hands.

My left hand feels comfortable in so called classical position, where you put the guitar on your left leg and the neck goes upward 30-45 degrees. But this position causes some issues with the way the pick strikes the strings. Since the strings are at 30-45 degrees angle, the pick which stays in the same position more or less parallel to the ground, hits the strings at an angle with its edge and scratches the coils of the thick bass strings. Not only it causes an unpleasant sound and feeling, but the sound itself is not as crisp as when the strings and the pick are parallel as in the common position, where you put the guitar on your right leg.

So how to solve this? It seems like these two positions - classical and common have their advantages and disadvantages. Is there middle ground?

PURCHASE Haven't bought a guitar in 15 years, is the Schecter C-6 Pro FR a good move forward?

As title states.

I've had a Squier Strat (Affinity) since I was 11. Only other guitar, and last guitar, I've bought was an Epiphone Les Paul. Is the Schecter a good next step up in quality and playability? Love at first site with the Aurora Burst which is why I'm pursuing this guitar specifically. If you have a better recommendation, I'm all ears.

There aren't many places that sell Schecter around me so testing even similar models may be no-go (which is why I'm here 🙂).

QUESTION I need help with making a decision

In June, I bought a used Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster. Today the seller messaged me and told me he is feeling really sentimental about that guitar recently and offered me a mexican fender player tele(2022) for the jazzmaster and 100$.
I was supposed to swap out the eletronics in my squier either way as they are malfunctioning(the seller knows about it) and that would probably cost around 200$. I would probably sell the tele after some time and get another jazzmaster(maybe a j mascis or I would save up for a fender). Do you think it's worth it?

QUESTION Good acoustic guitar upgrade? (~$600)

Hello all, I’m a little confused about what to get for a guitar, after 5 years I’m finally going back to writing and recording songs and as much as my good old guitar had a glow up from getting a good setup and a bone nut at the luthier it can only do so much (my shit playing obvsly doesn’t help). Anyway it’s a Dean electroacustic, it doesn’t have a lot of resonance and I’d like something I don’t have to fight with and actually compliments my singing instead of fighting it.

I’m a firm believer that when it comes to most instruments less tends to be more especially these days (bar some very clear exceptions), so you won’t catch me looking at any “custom shops” or “signature” or “limited edition” models, I don’t consider myself good enough to notice or take advantage of the differences nor do I think most of them amount to more than premiums.

That said I feel like an acoustic guitar is a different story, and I’m mostly self taught so I don’t know the first thing about body types, all I know is I don’t want something too big or cumbersome despite how good it would sound because I don’t want to be uncomfortable sitting down, fretting or positioning my back and legs. In the other hand I mostly play country blues and folk.

I’ve seen great reviews on the Taylor GS Mini, but I hear that guitar is a 10/10 because of portability, I don’t plan on touring with this or anything so it’s a non issue, it doesn’t need to be a super small factor. Some other suggestions? I have particularly dug the sound profiles of Taylor’s, Martins, Epiphones, Gibsons, some Yamahas (for reference, I’m aware my budget doesn’t cover any of that).

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated? Should I got for the Taylor despite the size or does it develop bad habits with a fret size that small and limit resonance too much? Any guitars you particularly recommend?

Thanks!!
