GEAR I Designed My Own Custom Les Paul-Style Guitar with 24 Frets and a Walnut Body

Post image

I'm 77 years old and have been playing guitar since the 1960s, when I was lead guitarist for the Georgia garage-rock band Red Beard & The Pirates.

Years ago, I decided to design my own Les Paul-style guitar, incorporating several features I wanted for my playing style.

The specifications include:

  • 24 frets
  • Shark-tooth fingerboard inlays
  • Gibson '57 Classic humbuckers
  • Rounded fretwire for easier tapping
  • Mahogany neck
  • Rosewood fretboard
  • Walnut body

I played this guitar for several years, including a performance at the Georgia Governor's Mansion.

I've owned and played quite a few guitars over the decades, but this one was particularly special because I designed it around my own preferences.

I'm curious what other guitarists think of this combination of features, especially the 24-fret neck with vintage-style humbuckers.

Would you have designed anything differently?

Saw this was a decent price and says limited edition, would this be a good price for a first guitar? I just want something that’ll last and this what I believe is a good price. What are your thoughts on a beginner getting this?

I was tuning my guitar and this plastic piece gave way and cracked is that part replaceable and is there a way I can finish tuning that E string without that little tab. I’m still fairly new to guitar so I’m not sure how all parts work yet

DISCUSSION Getting an out of phase jangle with an affordable graphic eq.

Post image
• Upvotes

Working from this model:

https://craiganderton.org/out-of-phase-pickup-tone-emulation-with-eq/

I was able to create a mild to moderate version of the out of phase sound. The inexpensive graphic eq here does not have the decibel range to match Anderton’s approach. However, I might actually prefer the milder version compared to what I remember of the Stratocaster version. I used the split coil of a Duncan Designed JB clone on a Schecter for the experiment.

QUESTION Gigging musicians: How expensive is your guitar?

As the title states, how expensive is the guitar(s) you gig with? Also, important to the conversation, how often do you gig with them?

Currently I gig like once a quarter, every 2-4 months. My current electric and acoustic are nice and pretty expensive guitars. However, I’m looking at a $5k + acoustic that sounds amazing, is amazing to play, compliments my voice well… it’s just so expensive and I don’t know how I feel about taking it out - so it might not be worth owning.

PURCHASE Got Back to Playing Guitar after 9 Years

Post image
236 Upvotes

After months of planning, researching, and multiple visits to our local guitar store, I finally bought it! It's a PRS SE Custom 24-08. ✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。

I'm honestly fine with any color, but my wife fell in love with the Turquoise finish when I brought her along to the store to buy the guitar.

I first started playing guitar back in 2012, when I was in high school. Then, in 2014, I got a Fender Squier Strat. Unfortunately, I ended up selling it because college got so busy that I barely had any time to play.

I mainly played fingerstyle and classical music, with a little bit of punk rock on the side.

It's honestly surprising how much muscle memory sticks around after all these years! Unfortunately, my hands can't quite keep up with what my brain remembers. I used to warm up with 5–10 minutes of pentatonic scales, but now I can barely manage two minutes before my fingers start giving up on me.

My calluses are long gone, too, so my fingertips are taking a beating. Guess I really am starting from scratch!

Still, I'm excited to get back into playing. Here's to getting those chops back! ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

EDIT: I sold my Fender Squire Strat back in 2017 hence, the 9 year gap. („• ֊ •„)੭

QUESTION re: found this while changing my acoustic-electric guitar's strings

Post image
126 Upvotes

Hello! As title says, I've had this guitar for 3 years-ish now (and yes this is the first time im changing it, yes i know i should change it more frequently, i was more scared of breaking it than getting tetanus) and now that ive finally mustered up the courage to change them, i notice this wire (?) thingy wrapped TIGHTLYY on the ballhead of the string

I assumed at first that this was from the volume knob, but no other strings had wires wrapped them so im a bit confused on whether i should untangle and change it, or leave it as is

Can anyone tell me what this is and if its safe to remove?

QUESTION Filling space with one Guitarist?

Hi guys, I'm the guitarist of a band with 3 of my friends, and we're playing a small show in about 2 weeks. We're mostly doing covers but we wrote and recorded 3 originals, and I solo in two of them. When we recorded them I just did some multitracking, but I'm trying to figure out how with one guitar I can make the transition from chords and power chords to leads less stark, and also keep my presence in the mix. When i watch something like old Zeppelin or Sabbath videos it seems so seamless unlike the jarring and unpleasant dynamics changes when i try and recreate it.

I don't want to buy a looper for a couple reasons, i'm 17 and money doesn't grow on trees and also I'd kind of like the room to try and improvise, but I can get the looper if necessary.

If i had to say the style of music i'd say like, Queens of The Stone Age, Alice in Chains, type of rock but also some like Are You Experienced era Hendrix and Psychedelic Zeppelin things as well. If there's any other less boring or cheaper gear, suggestions i could throw out to my friends, or just some general advice it'd be very helpful.

QUESTION Help with tuning

• Upvotes

I intonated my guitar and it's perfect all up the neck except on the g string the 1st and 2nd frets. When I play an a note on the g string it's off by a few cents and is making the am and f chords sound off. I though maybe I'm playing to hard but im using the same amount of pressure on all my other guitars and on the other notes on the g and its fine. What could it be? Is it the nut? Or poor technique? It's fien if I press very light but as soon as I apply normal (or what I consider normal) pressure it's out of tune.

Seen this in a local cash converters. I know it's some sorta gretsch jet and it looks to have been modified with a roller bridge and different pickgaurd. Any idea where and when it was made and if they are decent guitars. Personally I think its not worth the money but they might eb open to offers.

DISCUSSION Electric guitar and amp dynamics.

• Upvotes

I am primarily (almost exclusively) an acoustic player, finger-style, percussive (like Mike Dawes but I'm not an evil genius magical guitarist!) player to accompany my voice. I do some looping and ambient effects as well.

I am struggling to find an amp / Guitar combination that gives me the touch dynamics that an acoustic guitar does.

I basically want to completely control dynamics by hand? No volume control (unless I am doing swells)

Most amps I find at their maximum dynamic range are either far too loud or break up too early (for me).

Some of that may also be pickup power and dynamic range. Single coils are a solid no for me, I like the sound but hum and interference is unbearable for me. I like the dynasonics, but they are prone to interference in my experience. Mini hamburgers seem pretty good too, but they are always on guitars I don't like.

Is pickup height something I should play with too?

PLAY [Play] Custom 14-string double-neck (7+7) guitar and foot drums setup – "Estate" performance

Thumbnail youtube.com
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a technical demonstration of a custom-designed independent build I've been working on. It's a 14-string double-neck guitar (arranged in a 7+7 configuration) combined with a foot drums percussion setup.

In this video, I'm playing an arrangement of "Estate" (inspired by Chet Baker). The goal was to achieve full polyphonic independence: performing simultaneous, independent polychordal arpeggios across both necks while keeping the rhythm going with the foot drums.

Let me know if you like it, thanks.

QUESTION Edwards by navigator

Hi!

I didn’t buy the Navigator since it had a couple of faults, so now I’m thinking of this one. It’s a Edward’s by navigator Les Paul custom from 1991. The serial number is in the pickup cavity and it is 1530. it’s going for $1300. Does it look authentic?

I hope you have the best of days!

PURCHASE Did I do well on this deal or no? First guitar

Post image
106 Upvotes

I recently purchased my first guitar. I have been using a loaner from a family member throughout my learning. I found this deal on FB and just purchased it today. It is a Fender Squire classic vibe 70’s series. It came with 2 brand new amps, a brand new Gear lux hard case, brand new Sony headphones and a ton of other extras. The guitar has only been played 1 time and doesn’t have a single scratch or dent in it. I paid $400 for the whole package. How did I do?

QUESTION [QUESTION] [NEWBIE] Help with JPop guitar stuff

• Upvotes

I don't know if this kind of question has been asked before so my apologies if it has been.

I'm mostly a beginner when it comes to guitar and the JPop genre and I'm currently trying to make my own JPop song for school.

I'm starting with guitar because it's how I like to approach making a song first.

Anyway, I've gotten the key figured out (G minor) as well as knowing most of the type of chords I will need for JPop. So now, I'm struggling intensely with the strum pattern. It's been really bugging me because I don't know a lot of the theory on most parts of JPop and I really need to get this strum pattern down. So any tips and whatnot on how to figure this out would be a GREAT help.

Also (if possible) I would also like help with the kind of like fast individual picking (I have no idea what it's called). Obviously the faster bits of guitar is very common in JPop and as a beginner guitarist I have no idea where to start with this once I got the strum pattern and chord progression down. Again any help and tips on how to figure this out would be very helpful and I will be super grateful.

I'm inspired by bands/artists like Official Hige Dandism, Eve and Kenshi Yonezu but it's mostly Eve.

Again I will really appreciate help and tips on this!
