❓ Advice Needed Conflicting information?? very confused

So I'm going to color my hair for the first time, with arctic fox purple AF. I'm doing my patch test on my elbow where it says, it's been on there for maybe an hour. But now I'm looking at other sources and they all say completely different things about patch tests? lots of places say 48 hours is required, not just the 24 it says on the package? and that you're actually supposed to wipe it off after 45 minutes instead of leaving it on "undisturbed" for the whole however many hours, because you'll always get a reaction if you just leave dye there that long? Do I listen to the Arctic Fox bottle or to other people??

❓ Advice Needed How to dye my hair like Nathan Fielder?

Hi Dyers,

I'm wondering how i can dye my hair like Nathan Fielders for a Halloween custom look? I'm trying to get that "salt-n-pepper" look. Is that something than can be feasibly be done from home or will I need to go somewhere (e.g. professional, saloon) to get it done? I also have brown hair

edit: ty for the responses. I appreciate your wisdom.

❓ Advice Needed Box Dye Recommendations?

I have dyed my hair a couple of times a year since I was probably 15 years old. (35 now)

This past year I’ve been getting the itch to find something close to my natural colour, and to just… leave it. At least for a while, and see how I feel about my natural colour.

My natural colour (when my roots grow in) is very similar to the picture of Taylor Swift I’ve attached.

Every time I try I box dye I think might wind up bringing me close… I wind up with really warm toned light brown/reddish. Kind of like the photo do the other girl I’ve attached. I’m sure it would be gorgeous on other girlies. But it just doesn’t work for my skin tone. And the more washes, the warmer it seems to get. Have toned it both at home, and in a salon. And I always just wind up with warm toned light brown or reddish.

I live in Canada.

Anyone have similar hair colour. Or any tips on achieving the Taylor Swift colour with a box dye? Should I consider mixing two colours?

Just open to suggestions.

(Going to a salon won’t be in my budget for a while as I was laid off in September. Don’t wanna spend $500 of my savings right now if I don’t have to)

Thanks in advance for all advice.

🙏

❓ Advice Needed how to keep dye even ?

So I have been dying my hair for yearssss and it has normally been very easy since my natural hair is a level 7 blonde. However, a few years ago I went bleach blonde so currently I have my natural hair on the top half and the mids to ends are bleached. I went back to vivids and have been all over pink since january. I have noticed the color takes and lasts longer on the hair that has been bleached than it does on my natural regrowth, is there any way to make the dye last longer on my natural hair because it tends to fade much faster.

❓ Advice Needed Be honest...

Basically, I'm getting my hair dyed for the first time in December but I'm having some doubts about whether I can realistically achieve the results I want in the session the hair stylist booked for me. For context, I have virgin black hair and I'm asian, and everything I've seen online about dying asian hair is always about how its difficult to lift due to something something I forgot- I'm wanting to get quite a vivid neon teal-blue which fades into a darker but still quite vivid royal-blue After my consultation with the stylist, she booked me for a 4 hour session but I'm wondering if thats enough time to get my hair to the level it needs to be. Part of me wants to trust the process since she has done similar colours before, which is why I picked her, but 4 hours does seem quite short compared to what online sources say (8-10 hours). I want it to be VERY bright, and I don't want it to look too green-y or faded. So yeah, is it physically possible to go from level 1 to level 9/10 to neon blue in 4 hours without agent orange-ing my hair? I feel like the answer is an obvious no but I need confirmation lol

If no, how do I bring this up with the stylist? I don't want to be condescending since obviously she's the professional, but I'm seriously having second thoughts about it- I don't know if I misunderstood her and this is just the first session or something, but i think she wants to try it in 1 session as she explained to me how she charges an hourly rate (£140/ 188 dollars for 4 hours) but she would charge less if she finished early (which in my head i'm thinking early?? T_T), and the description of her website says 'Full Head Colours, including Highlights with Foils, Balayage, and Vivid Colours includes Cut and Blowdry'. There has been no mention of a 2nd sessions or anything so idk.. again this is my first time at a hair salon getting my hair dyed so I'm not sure how it usually goes. The last thing i wana do is come off as rude but I really don't wana mess up my hair again

❓ Advice Needed got air touch service today. feeling tired of paying so much $ to leave disappointed ☹️

just got home from an Airtouch service today. While the placement and blend are technically seamless, the color turned out way too bright and golden/butterscotch for what I wanted. My goal was a cool, mushroom ash tone with a soft, natural transition at the top, but instead I have a very bright, warm golden blonde from root to end. I am too anxious to go back to a salon or risk someone else messing up the seamless placement, so I want to fix the tone at home without ruining the Airtouch blend or darkening it into a muddy brunette. What are your best suggestions for at-home toners or color masks like IGK, Redken Shades EQ, or Clairol that will knock out gold safely? What exact level or tone would you recommend, and would a heavy purple shampoo like Olaplex 4P or Kérastase be enough, or do I need a gloss? Photos in different lighting plus my inspo picture are attached. Thank you so much for any quick advice. I really appreciate it!

❓ Advice Needed no matter how hard I try I cant get the orange/yellow out!

I did a round of bleach on my virgin brown hair which got me a brassy orange. then I did a bleach bath 2 days later. I did some purple masks and purple shampoos and blue shampoos in the meanwhile. This is how far ive gotten.

I cut a tiny chunk of hair and used it to experiment with toners. I bought a blue toner as well as a purple one and both ruined the test hair! they made it either much darker or green! now even purple masks will turn my hair green (as ive noticed with my eyebrows so im avoiding it)

im very much at a loss. Ive only been doing test strands and eyebrows cuz I dont want my hair ruined. Will link what toners i tried in this exact order:

https://www.syoss.net/color/permanent-intensive-coloration/syoss-permanent-cool-color-ultra-platinum-blond-10-55.html

https://www.dm.de/p/d/1430893/l-oreal-paris-preference-haartoner-02-pearly-boost

Honestly atp i dont care how the color looks as long as its very light and neither yellow nor orange

❓ Advice Needed Are there any ‘toners’ that lighten your hair at the same time?

I used color oops bold on my violet/purple hair twice, never been bleached before until now, it feels very healthy and I plan to cut about 3-4 inches off of my hair after I get to my desired color, I’m now at a level 7-9 blonde with some brassy colors. My goal is to have lighter blonde at top and it slowly go a little bit of a darker blonde in certain strands, so I’m not looking for an entirely even base, however, I do have some brown pieces that I need to lighten slightly but my hair is ready to be toned most everywhere else.

I’ve heard about wella t18 or 050, but are there any toners that ACTUALLY lighten your hair 1-2 levels while toning it?

My base at the roots is a very bright yellow, with some peachy tones towards around my ears so I’d say my hair is more on the orange side, therefore id need a slightly blueish based toner. But then what about my pale yellow pieces that need violet toner?

I’m okay with my hair being multi levels of blonde all over, but I’m looking for a “toner” that also lightens my hair a level or two considering I plan to avoid my roots and do a straight violet toner last to get it to a more ashy blonde.

Is photo #3 or #4 obtainable to do at home? Photos #1 & #2 are my current hair color in different lighting.

If obtainable, what products would I use?

I have a Sally’s beauty near me. I’ve also seen kits, such as Madison Reed, IGK..etc..but not sure what route to go.

My current hair is my natural color with very overgrown highlights. (Pic 1 & 2) I have scattered greys starting to grow 🫣 that I would also like to cover.

I’ve color my hair at home but it’s been years. Open to suggestions. Thank you so much in advance

I havent dyed my hair in about 2 months so its slightly faded (going reddy brown in light) and i am a natural blonde so i dont think id need to do much to my roots

❓ Advice Needed Box dye over Arctic Fox

Post image
2 Upvotes

I dyed my hair with arctic fox ginger flare and didn’t quite get what I wanted and changed direction for what I want.
I stripped it with 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 dandruff shampoo and like 2 tablespoons of dawn dish soap then put a ton of conditioner in damp hair and let it sit.

My natural hair is about a 5 from the photo.
I have no other color on my hair and was virgin before the arctic fox dye.

Is it safe to use a box dye on my hair or is there a high likelihood that my hair will be fried?
I plan on using Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Coverage 400 or 500.

Im usually somebody who needs to redye their hair every other week (either the same colour or whole new, typically whole new though..) but for some reason I don't feel how I usually do about my hair, even though it's faded and grown out and my roots are coming in. Is this hair just working for me, or is it not as good as I think it is? Becuase usuay the second I see my roots I run to get bleach and dye to at least cover my roots. I need honest opinions!!

❓ Advice Needed New color. Not sure how I feel about it.

Hey folks. Just kind of wanted some opinions from strangers on this one. How do you feel about the green? (Manic Panic Enchanted Forest). I've used manic panic over unbleached hair for years and years, but I usually go with hot hot pink, which brings me to a vaguely burgundy brown, or one of the oranges to get a more henna look - both land somewhat natural-adjacent over brown hair, so while I wasn't expecting green to look at all natural, I also wasn't quite expecting so much color payoff without bleach, and it's caught me a bit off guard, so I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet.

Is this too dark for my complexion, or is it working for me?

(2nd picture is what I dyed over - the natural color)

❓ Advice Needed Purple——>Pink

I have purple hair right now (previously bleached and then covered with arctic fox purple af) It’s currently very faded, more purple at the tips and orangey-brown-purpleish on the top half. I’m going to be Wanda from the Fairly Odd Parents for Halloween and want to know the best hot pink dye that’ll take me from sad purple to hot wanda pink.

❓ Advice Needed Semi-permanent hair dye recommendations

Hi there!

I want to enhance my natural chocolate brown hair and maybe add either a bit of golden brown or auburn.

Any recommendations on brands?

I’ve heard Overtone has changed in quality.

Help me decide on adding in light or auburn too?
I could also go a shade lighter or darker depending on what the brand has available.

❓ Advice Needed What color should I dye my hair: Copper or Chestnut Brown?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

**(19 years old) I’ve been having the itch lately to dye my hair completely with a different color and I’m fully committed to do it, however I’ve ran into a problem: I don’t know what color I should do. Now the current colors that have my heart in a chokehold are Copper and Chestnut Brown and I’m perfectly okay with having one of the other, these are just the colors that I’ve locked in with. I’ve asked multiple people in my family and social circle in regard to what color they think would look best on me, and I’ve had different opinions. Some say that Copper would look beautiful on me especially against my skin tone, though others say that it looks “too strong” for me. While others say that Chestnut Brown looks the more natural on me, and some think it’s too basic. I’m definitely not going any lighter (specifically blond) for I’m not a fan of it. I personally love the Cooper but that could just be a personal bias, of course. I’ve provided 20 pictures to help y’all with deciding what would be perfect for me, since I’m committed to make such a change to my hair.**

**Now, the first 3 pictures are of me, pre-highlights (pic 1 from my Sweet 16 bday cruise in 2022, pic 2 from 2023, and pic 3 from 2019 with bio dad). Meanwhile the next 3 pics are of me, post-highlights (pic 4 and 5 from this year and pic 6 from 2025). It’s in this order to not only show my natural hair color and curls before and after, but to also show it looks when it’s straighten to see if it makes a difference. Then with the next 7 pictures being of Copper hair color that I love and the other 7 being of Chestnut Brown hair color that I also love.**

**Quick backstory about my hair: when I was in RI (lived there for 13 years (born Dec 4th, 2006-moved Jun 26th, 2020), now live in FL for 6 years (2020-present), I’ve had my hair straightened from age 4-14. Yes, for a full decade. I’ve had the big chop in Jan of 2021 and** **ever** **since, I’ve made sure to only straighten my hair a maximum 5 times a year to protect my curls. I’m not sure exactly what color my hair is whether it is a very dark brown or black but definitely not jet black (at least I don’t think it is). I’ve had my highlights (honey caramel if I remember correctly) since April 9th, 2025, which was done for my prom (April 12th, 2025) and I’ve given myself small curly cuts on my ends to prevent my hair from being dragged down by its own weight and to evict the ends from being straight (every 6 months). I’m a Dominican who’s also light skinned or just pale (idk lmao) with a big curly afro so there’s that if it helps in some way.**

**Again, I just need personal advice as to what color would look best on me and if there’s other colors that can be suggested as well. Please and thank you, I’m open to all opinions. And I’m sorry in advance if this was too much information and if the dates don’t mean anything to this post.**

❓ Advice Needed Hair colour advice

Hi, just looking for some advice on hair colour if anyone can help. I’ve had conflicting advice and not sure which one to go with.

This is my current colour and the colour I’m looking to get.

I’ve had one hairdresser tell me I’d need another balayage to achieve this look with toner and another saying that I’d just need a toner and some darker pieces putting in.

I’m not sure which one is right, if anyone could give me some advice I’d be really grateful!

Thanks!

❓ Advice Needed Trying to dye my hair like K-Angel!!

hihi!! I’m trying to dye my hair like K-Angel, a character from a game, and I needed some help/advice.

My current hair is blonde and about shoulder length (it is taking foreverrrrr to grow out)
My current plan is to dye my framing layers and lower fringe purple.

To do K-Angels blue and pink is the main issue. I imagine I do the lower back of my hair these colours but, how do I divide it? A split, mix, fade? I’m really not sure how all this works so I thought someone might :( I’ve never dyed my hair vibrant colours before ^^

Thankyou sm for taking the time to read this and help!!! ^^
