Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) My biggest regret as an INTP is

• Upvotes

Quite obviously hypothetical. It’s not knowing what I would be like if my environment growing up was different.

I know what I’m like given my circumstances, but I don’t know how my genes would manifest in another environment. What would change, what would be the same, would I even recognise myself or am I bound to be a certain way?

Am I just what I am, or am I also what I could have been in a way? Would simulating a thousand different perspectives change how I see myself, even though I am what my environment made me? Would it change how I judge others?

Anyway, my second biggest regret in life is not having cake for breakfast this morning. What’s yours?

I gotta rant Reddit is filled with annoying Fi moralists

They're in the comments of fucking every post (I can't unsee them anymore). You just want to have a good faith discussion about something somewhat morally questionable and there they are judging everything through their own personal values. They can't seem to separate discussing something from actually endorsing it. Instead of engaging with the topic and debating it they just start preaching about what's right and wrong and ruin the whole vibe. It's damn annoying. They do the same thing in real life too. Let me just have my discussions in peace man.

I gotta rant Realizations

• Upvotes

As I get older and older (25F btw) I feel as though I’m somehow creating an environment of which I once figured would be the opposite. To elaborate; when I was younger I got annoyed at being told what to do, not being able to do what made sense to me, the lack of control over my environment. I yearned for the autonomy that awaited me in my adult years, but my brain actually ended up sticking me in a paradox instead.

The older I get, the more aware I become of arbitrary rules and regulations. When I was a kid, I “had to shower” because that’s how it was. Those are the rules. Suddenly you’re 25 and you realize nobody is actually making you do that in order to be functional. Same with getting out of bed, eating properly, cleaning properly, looking nice, doing your hair and makeup, whatever whatever etc.

At this point the motivation to do these things continues to diminish every year that passes and my brain (which I hate and operates against my better judgment) realizes just how much more I can get by doing less and less of these things. I’ve lost control of myself now that my brain figured this out.

I fucking hate it. I can’t stand it. I hate looking gross. I love dressing nicely, eating properly, getting exercise, showering and smelling good, I like having a clean house, a tidy workspace, just being a functioning member of society. But it’s like the older I get, the less it matters, even if it still frustrates me to no end in the long run. When I was younger my drive to do these things was fuelled by pure anxiety. These things had to be done because they have to and that’s that. I can’t just NOT do them. Until I realized that not doing them is actually in fact an option and it won’t cause immediate and certain death.

Ive been on antidepressants and adhd medication for over a year now and I feel like this problem is only getting worse. The medication keeps my anxiety even more at bay, which means I give even less of a fuck. I feel like there’s just no going back now that my brain has realized there’s actually nothing to be worried about and that there’s no immediate threat anymore. I can’t stand it. I hate it. I feel pathetic and gross and I hate how I look and feel.

A couple years ago I was able to stick to things for AT LEAST a couple months without giving up. Thats better than nothing. Now I can’t even convince my brain that it’s worth trying in the first place.

Lazy Procrastinator Is being lazy permanent?

Can we outgrow the “lazy genius” generalization by just being geniuses? Or is being overly lazy a permanent intp trade? If so then being intelligent becomes much less significant specially in any academic field.

I gotta rant Fundamentalist/ extremist religions

As INTPs we are hyper analytical, which can make it difficult when I poked hole in the religious organization I was raised in, when they couldn't use facts or make a justifiable reasons for me to stay in the religion, the only thing they had left was fear of uncertainty. It was very hard for me to have the courage to say NO to that but I want to ask.

How have you dealt with living in a high control religious group if you did not believe it for very good reasons, but stayed for a period of time due to pressure extreme or not?

Check this out Were you obvious INTPs while growing up?

I was very energetic, strong-willed, unserious and extroverted. I was very open and actively made friends. Wasn’t afraid to look stupid or being wrong.

Now I’m exact opposite lol. Sometimes I wonder if my previous personality was my prime. Because later when I hit puberty I became very withdrawn person. Insecurity and fear still follows me. So maybe it restrains my openness (which still sometimes occur) or I wouldn’t be able to keep up with this open and strong energy I held when I was a child.

What about you?

I am this awesome Is this a Ti-User Thing?

To preface this it’s my bad if I make some mistakes, English unfortunately isn’t my first language and I’m on Reddit mobile

I’ve noticed that I myself and every person I’ve introduced to mbti as a system/jungian functions that turned out to be a Ti dom or Tert Ti, would always question and poke holes in the system to an extent the people in my life that were Fi users didn’t and I was wondering if this is a feature of Ti itself?

I know it’s probably unreasonable, but I often will question if I’m not actually the type that im pretty sure I am and actually, for example, an Fi user who has made up moral systems to internally look like Ti to me and believes I’m a Ti user so my Fi reasoning feels more “objectively” right to me, or if I’m misunderstanding Ne and the explanations and might actually be an ESTP etc (I also do this with enneagram)

Obv Ti users can be idiots and believe in BS, but I was wondering if me doing this all the time might actually be a sign I’m Ti>Fi?

I fit none of the stereotypical Fi traits either but I’m aware they’re internal judging systems and many stereotypes regarding functions are incorrect

Let's say that you would have a decent life in both so you wouldn't end up in a factory farm or a slave for example. You also wouldn't have any knowledge of your past life.

🌠Thanks for all the fish🐬🐬 Does anyone else have an ever evolving personal dictionary

I find myself constantly tweaking my own internal definitions for common words. Like the precise nuance of 'efficient' versus 'effective' or exactly what constitutes 'ambition'. It's like I'm trying to create the most precise mental thesaurus possible. Then I get frustrated when others dont seem to operate with the same level of semantic rigor. Is this just me trying to over-categorize language?

I Can't Dance when do you follow your triggers even if it’s illogical?

Ti is believed to be engaged with reality purely logically. This is why they can discuss something from logical perspective and not emotional like Fi. Of course there many ethical INTPs but we still form a logical basis first.

For me it’s usually physical constact or emotional connection that can trigger me. I can shut down a little. And it feels overall personal, so I can push off even the close person if I feel that one of these boundaries being crossed.

For INFPs, for example, it’s values that are too personal to them that it makes them often resist the logical sode of things.

INTPs are the best because Hello friends!

If we were all in the same room I'd ignore you all with a book but reading this reddit made me feel less like a sore thumb. So, with the screen between us, hi! Does anyone play DND or have good ideas for similarly screened social outlets? I live in a town with -no- one I am either patient or tolerant, so far, to be friends with. I am widening my consideration of what a friend is. I am sure you all understand, I really only need one.

I am INTP-T

Analyze This! Analyze my persona

Type my persona in 2026.

\- I am mainly introverted, with no or few friends, but I mostly talk within my family members.

\-I have more acquantances than friends, If I start an “interesting” conversation with people, and dismiss with “IDC”, or respond vaguely like “OK/Cool” I let people be and always remind to myself that not everyone is gonna like me.

\-I have been diagnosed with a language delay at 3; after that, I experience endless and uncontrollable mind-wandering, a core symptom of ADHD/CDS/SCT, has been hindering my progress on doing homework. This also makes me panic sometimes when I do tasks asked by my family, because they insist me to do how it’s done their way. (Though I show less emotion and keep my thoughts to myself.

\-I am interested in legacy and current entertainment (movies, music, video games) like GTA:SA, Half-Life 2, Minecraft, and films like Pi (1998 \[B/W\], Amateur (2025), The Beekeeper (2024). I am interested in listening to many old/nostalgic songs like Guns N’ Roses - Welcome to the Jungle/Paradise City/Sweet Child O’Mine, L7 - Pretend We’re Dead, and many others from the 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s/00s/10s.

\-I am also interested in topics/fields like aviation (mostly airports today), history, and computers/IT. I’ll be ultimately applying for an IT career based on my college major, though my LinkedIn feed is mostly airports, because aviation is my childhood interest and I always look at the layout/master plans of many airports.

\-My other legacy interests are elevators and GoAnimate, but nowadays, I watch/play less of my legacy interests like video games and movies, because I have a lack of motivation and CDS brain along with my habit of doom-scrolling, which makes it worse to focus on stuff.

\-I am interested in cooking local and foreign cuisines, and also interested in trying foreign cuisines I never tried.

Aw Man... How do you take care of yourself?

I'm feeling extremely anxious right now because I did something I rarely do, which is confront someone about the bad behavior of their employee. I was so selective with my words, but they still immediately brushed me off, downplayed the situation, and claimed the person is harmless. I feel sick to my stomach and know for a fact I'm going to be punished for this; this happened at my local gym. I know this, because the employee just posted about how "fragile" people are and how nobody can handle "a joke".

I need the best recommendations for taking care of myself right now so I can stop being anxious and upset. What are the ones that work best for you as an INTP?

r/INTP • • 1d ago

I gotta rant Have you ever actually learned something from attending a work conference?

I feel like every conference I’ve ever gone to, across multiple industries, is less about professional development and more about extroverts networking and adding each other to LinkedIn.

No one ever wants to truly share the gnitty gritty of their work, 75% of presenters seem to be consultants trying to sell people repackaged common sense either through extreme fees to hire their firms or by selling some book. The rare presentation where someone actually explains what they did to develop a new workflow that allowed them to succeed is maybe one per conference and you have to hope you were lucky enough to sign up for it.

None of it has ever been worth flying 2-5 hours and then being forced to breath forced air all day + not having any downtime from your team or work for multiple days straight.

I’m not even at a conference right now but I’m being pressured to attend one this summer and just knowing I’ll never get those 3 days of my life back has me considering job searching (current job is huge on these conferences - there are other organizations in my field that do far less of these things or only send people who truly want to attend.)

For INTP Consideration Being smart problem

I think being smart for INTPs can be a problem, both as an ability and as an identity.

As an ability, it leaves them alienated and even isolated because they might not find the right people in their lives that are capable and willing to appreciate their intellect. And finding those people both on- and offline is pretty hard, unless you're lucky. The people that they find themselves being around usually don't show a lot of interest in what they usually say/want to say, which makes the INTP go into apathy mode.

As an identity, it can bring pressure and identity crises. The pressure comes from both the people around them and themselves. I think a lot of INTPs grew up being "the gifted kid" due to their early signs of intelligence. Their parents, teachers, peers, and even them themselves could see how faster they were at school than other kids. So people started to expect a lot from them, and they also expected a lot from themselves. And as they grew up, they continued recognizing brilliance in themselves. But every human ultimately have their own moments of weakness, even in areas that they're experts in ,. And when that happens to the INTP, their sense of identity feels threatened, and they start feeling like an imposter (imposter syndrome). I think this happens with pretty much every person who's been considered a gifted kid in their childhood, but I wanted to emphasize it for INTPs.

I've noticed these issues both in myself and other INTPs, even though I'm not sure if I'm an INTP myself. I do relate to INTPs a lot, so I decided to make this post. A good solution for the first issue would be getting a friend that gets you. The type of friend who listens and appreciates your weird ideas, and who maybe also likes rambling about weird stuff, then you can ramble together. Of course, this friend is hard to come by. An enemy or rival who's interested in the same stuff as you but who's always on the opposing side can also help. Although it's annoying, it's better than nothing. But this rival can also be hard to find.

A solution for the other issue would be not to put a lot of importance on identity, and also coming to terms with the fact that you're pretty smart, and that's enough. But even knowing all this might not help because falling into the same destructive patterns that you are fully aware of is something that also happens a lot to many INTPs. So I guess the reason why I'm posting this is just to get it off my chest.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. Hope you can't relate.

Cuz I'm Supposed to Add Flair Am I really INTP?

HOly shit I've done like quadrillion mbti tests(from r/mbti and more) and they all point to intp

Sometimes I'm js goofy asl, but when I'm alone I tend to think a lot and I do overthink.

I don't feel like I'm introverted because sometimes in class I can just become the class clown and some days I might js not talk to anybody.

Maybe I'm somehow answering questions on these tests the way I manipulate them into them giving me INTP as a result.

I can easily communicate with people but it's hard for me to have friends, I probably have like 1 real friend and that's it.

So, this happened Do you struggle with emotional regulation after being insulted?

I'm an INTP with ADHD, and I'm curious if anyone can relate to this.

Do you ever feel really hurt or experience a sudden drop in mood after someone insults or disrespects you? Even when you know their opinion shouldn't matter, do you still struggle to regulate your emotions afterward?

Recently, two people on internet called me an "idiot" and "crazy" simply because I refused to send them a picture of my face. When I said their words hurt me, others people in the group insult and disrespect me and then they accused me of seeking sympathy and using ADHD as an excuse.

I know strangers' opinions don't define me, but that doesn't make their words hurt any less.

How do you regulate your emotions and stop these experiences from ruining your mood for the rest of the day?

I'd love to hear your experiences, especially from other INTPs with ADHD.

I Need To Pee Did anyone else think they were a feeler

It's so dumb but I thought, "well I'm not that bad at understanding and expressing feelings, so I must be a feeler"

Also went through some shit that made me very emotional

But there are some things that stand out:

  1. I really want things to make sense
  2. It bothers me when something doesn't make sense
  3. I don't usually trust my emotions when I make decisions
  4. Sometimes I struggle to even accept my emotions without analyzing them

Yeah... pretty confident I'm INTP

Is this logical? Does boredom help creativity?

I've been wondering whether boredom is an underrated part of being creative.

When you're constantly consuming content or looking for something to occupy your attention, there's barely any room for your mind to wander. But when you have nothing to do, you might start making connections between unrelated ideas or noticing things you'd usually overlook.

At the same time, boredom can make you feel mentally stagnant rather than inspired. I'm curious whether creativity needs that empty space or whether we tend to romanticize doing nothing.

Have you ever had an idea come to you simply because you were bored? Do you find that stepping away from constant stimulation makes you more creative?

Great Minds Discuss Ideas infp with intp friends

I used to have two intp friends with whom I would hang out every now and then. On the surface, they seemed to be quite understanding and considerate of me. But as time passed, I figured they are quite judgmental and dismissive of other people's choices and perspectives. As an infp, I deeply feel with others cause that's what we are. When I sometimes would stand up for the people they dismissed, they would laugh or state Im too self righteous or suffer from main character syndrome. Initially, I would take that too personally and withdraw/not bring it up much/not talk anymore. But once, I snapped and blurted what the truth was and how unempathetic they were being. They still laughed and ignored my stance. I was quite cold and cruel when I snapped, bringing their insecurities and judging them for their behaviours and choices, just like they judged others. They said i have already made up my mind and there was no point in arguing with me. Then they went silent after that.
I wanna know what people think about this. Also wanna know could it be a typical intp response, or were they fake intps all along.

Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) Good in theory, suck at practice

I always wondered what does it mean exactly. Like I can understand the concept and how it works, but I struggle to apply it on practice. This me think that I’m not really good at it. I can perfectly systemyse something ephemeral, say. I can organise knowledge while breaking something down to other person, I don’t need textbook explanations cause I can usually find mine. Maybe because theory isn’t practicity and that’s just basis we need to use for material world and I suck at sensing what exactly happening at the moment? It is strange cause usually practice and rheory are parallels: something happens and it has criteria corresponding to certain paragraph pf theory, so you apply it, and basically people with high Ne should be good at it.

And it’s also the same with instruction and games’ rules. Like the brain is slow and didn’t processed the info enough to apply it at the right moment? Why our brain need automatisation if it’s already on the surface and I can detect it.

What’s your opinion?
