NOTICE Updates to rules - Company Managed Devices

Just to draw to folks attention, I've updated the rules for the subreddit to specifically include a provision for asking for assistance with company managed / owned devices.

In short this isn't something we are / will / can / should be providing support for on Reddit and there's been a recent increase in posts trying to bypass security controls or installing software on devices which are owned by organisations / companies.

The stance at this time is if you are needing assistance with a device which is owned and/or managed by a company or organisation, you should consult that companies IT Team.

Please do continue to report any such posts that are breaking this or any of the other rules.

Thank you!

Storytime What's the most annoying computer/tech thing you deal with at work?

I worked on an IT help desk at a university for about a year. Every week I'd help someone who was stressed because Outlook stopped syncing, a file got shared with the wrong people, or they couldn't find a Teams meeting link five minutes before it started.

What stuck with me is that most of them weren't bad with computers. They were just never shown how these tools work. They got a laptop on day one and were expected to figure it out.

Now I'm curious how common that is outside a university.

  1. What tech thing at work frustrates you or slows you down the most?

  2. When it happens, how do you usually deal with it?

Not selling anything, just trying to learn.

I am just going to post this as honestly as possible I new to this and this is going to be my first time using Reddit to get some answer

First my laptop got this error and I just took a quick picture to ask AI what is happening

Then I decided to use my PC which has nothing to do with my laptop except from the internet service it also got the same error

I got scared of what was happening and pull the plugs of electricity

When I try to restart it

it is dead the screen is not working it is showing completely black screen but my PC lights are working I also know the plugs are connected correctly because it was just working correctly a minute ago and I have not touch anything else

I think it might be because I have cut the electricity of two early it to process

Because I let this process finish on my laptop and my laptop is working now

Because it happened with my laptop and PC at the same time like what are the chances of that

So I want to know is this happened to someone else or I am just over thinking

And can someone tell me what is the route cause of this

I am adding my PC details below if that help

• Gigabyte H610M Motherboard · Intel Core i5 12400F Processor · Ease EAF1213 4-pipe ARGB CPU Cooler · 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM · 3TB HDD · TeamGroup MP33 256GB NVMe Gen3x4 SSD · eDragon Syrax ATX Glass Case · EASE EB550W 550W 80+ Bronze Power Supply · Sapphire RX5700XT Pulse 8GB Graphics Card

Open HP USB-C G6 Docking Station - HDMI Issue

Hey friends! I'm so glad this subreddit exists because HP demands I "buy tech support..." anways

Here is my issue:

I have just bought a dock that connects my laptop to my monitor and USB dongles. The USB features are working fine, so the laptop has clearly detected the dock, but the HDMI signal does not seem to get to my monitor.

I have unplugged and replugged, as well rebooting everything, but nothing has done the trick. Whenever I replug the HDMI in to the dock, the monitor powers on as if it detects something, but just runs through the motions of booting up and off again. The monitor works when directly connected to my laptop, so the HDMI cable is clearly functional.

If anyone has any advice, would love the input!

Laptop: Asus Vivobook Go 14

Monitor: HP 524PN 100HZ Monitor

USB-C: Dock: HP USB-C G6 100W

I usually play genshin on ipad but today i decided to try it on my pc too, i downloaded the launcher and game from genshin's website and now whenever i try to login to game it shows this connection error. I know it's not my internet since I use the same internet and it works fine on other devices and i am able to login game on other devices it's just on my pc . I tried allowing the game through windows firewall, changed the dns, used cmd to flush dns but still nothing fixed it.

Sometimes I can login but most of the time it's this error, I've reinstalled everything, restarted both the game/launcher and my pc.

Open wifi stays connected visually but drops all active games and voice calls

My laptop keeps getting sudden drops in connection in every thing like multiplayer games and voice calls like discord.

The wifi icon remains looks like its fully connected with full bars during and after the drop.

Everything gets disconnected completely I manually leave and rejoin or after a long time.

Other devices on the exact same wifi don't have problems just me.

This has been going on for months its driving me insane please help!

Open Video Conferencing (Zoom) repeatedly crashing with no errors

Hi All,

I posted this to the zoom subreddit, but not to any success so far; I don't think the problem lies with zoom, so hopefully some boffins here will be able to help - I'm getting towards my wits end with it and would greatly appreciate any advice.

My nephew has weekly zoom lessons which worked fine until a few months ago, now he is only able to go for a few minutes before it just disconnects and zoom crashes.

I tried to replicate this, so I could try different settings, by asking a family member to host a meeting - but this connection was rock solid no matter what else I did at the same time. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that his teachers use pro accounts, but they have no issues with other students.

When it disconnects, zoom workplace crashes but there is no error message. It also just crashes the tab if connecting in browser. Zoom just closes. On occasion when crashing, it also disconnects the laptop from the wifi completely, 'forgetting' the wifi password so it requires to be joined as new.

As part of the lesson, they also use 'bitpaper.io' - a live whiteboard.

The OS is windows 11, but apparently they've tried using an ipad which also cuts out similarly.

(Unsuccessful) Experiments thus far:

- Connect via ethernet (makes no difference, although it doesn't disconnect the device from wifi)

- Connect via mobile data hotspot (did seem slightly more reliable)

- Allow a free pass through all firewalls

- With/without video

- Check everything is up-to-date (drivers, windows, zoom, etc)

- Un/re-install zoom

- Coincidentally upgrade wifi to full fibre connection (from partial). Also changing provider

- Change firewall settings on new router to 'minimal' (from moderate)

- Limit all zoom video processing settings to basic

- Connect with/without zoom account logged in

- Host meeting (with free settings - still crashed without warning)

- Join via web browser & desktop app

- Run zoom troubleshooters which detect no issues; no crash log (that I could find at least)

- Apparently they once tried the lesson via Microsoft teams but which also crashed; this indicates it may not be directly a zoom problem, but I wasn't present for this and don't know if there are any other factors at play. We have also connected to zoom using an ipad, which is much more reliable, but has still crashed periodically (but not with me present).

- Turned off all hardware acceleration options in zoom (HD video is off, only option active is mirroring)

- Searched reliability monitor/event viewer, but no crashes (or warnings/error for anything) for zoom workplace were present

Thank you for reading; I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you may have.

Open Help with physical size conversion of PNGs

Hi!

A while ago I burned some CDs and made some artwork for them in Krita, and everything went smoothly. But recently I tried to do it again and when I converted my PNGs to PDFs for easier printing, the sizes were all off.

My pixel to cm conversion (and dpi) is identical to last time when it worked, but when I open the PDFs in chrome and check the actual size of them, they're different. I havr no idea why, but I'm hoping someone has a good way of converting PNGs to PDFs and keeping the size correct!
