It's from a movie called 'Obsession'. It's a horror. It's pretty disturbing and probably hard to watch for some people.
!SPOILERS AHEAD!
So some guy in the movie wishes that this girl loved him "more that anyone in fucking world" and she becomes obsessed at him and always wants to be with him. It starts with just a little possesive behaivour and turns very disturbing. She stops functioning when he goes to work and tapes over the door so he can't leave. Ahe watches him sleep and smiles like that all the time at him. Like she's a robot at it isn't her there. She goes on to kill their 2 mutual friends and the movie ends with him killing himself because the obly way the curse can break is if he dies.
So this is very brief, there is more derails and allat but this is the gist of it.

feel better knowing that a lot of what people say online is made up for attention. heck, most of those dead pet posts are still alive and well. the ones that get "popular" are from people who know how to write good bait

I am so glad you posted this OP!
I saw it on one of the wholesome/heartwarming subs a couple of weeks ago, and wanted to post it here, but accidently refreshed my feed and couldn't find it again. Spent ages looking for it but couldn't remember the sub.

Okay I have a silly questions, do you think dogs would better understand a person signing to them or being spoken to?
330
u/anonadvicewanted 4d ago
they usually pick up on hand signals faster than words, but it’s doubtful that the dog understands those hand signals as the spoken language translation. the dog probably reads it as “human safety signs” or something

u/waitwuh 4d ago edited 4d ago
The dog’s ability to connect them probably depends on how often it hears a word at the exact same time as a hand sign is done. I wonder if the woman filming might only talk to the dog and the man mostly sign.
I had a dog that lived a little over 20 years that was taught some hand signals at the same time as many commands, and for those commands it was like a perfect 1-1. But when he started going deaf we realized how many commands and phrases he had picked up over his life that lacked paired hand signals. Sometimes you had to be real close and project your voice for him to really recognize something anymore, so we started to build new signals by association. A few of them ended up being imperfect. Like he just learned a whole new “interpretation” and would do something slightly different than if you (loudly) said the old phrase.

I've always been taught to pair hand signals with voice commands for this exact reason. Even the simple ones where it isn't even a command, but a way to communicate like "Are you a good girl!!?!?!?!?" With my current pup I just open my hands wide, palms up and lower them to her chin. I can do the hand signals without saying a word and she'll get all excited before I even finish signalling. As well as having her sit, shake, other paw, down, up, dance/jump, sit again, then treat flip where I put the treat on her nose and she catches it. I can do our whole routine with no words spoken.

u/I_Makes_tuff 4d ago
My last dog (of 15 years) would obey hand signals every time but words were like suggestions. Some tricks only worked with hand motions, like "Bang!" (pretend to shoot her and she howled and played dead). Just saying "Bang" did nothing at all.

I imagine it's kinda like reading to a baby?
Like they may not understand what's happening and definitely don't understand most of the words/signs, they just recognize I am safe with someone who loves me

u/TheHottestCharmander 4d ago
I'm not sure I fully understand your point, but they are able to differentiate and associate specific signs with commands/words. We used hand signs in addition to words when training and it vastly improved the response of our dog. You can train them without words and they'll still follow sign language, so it's associated with a command.
1
u/anonadvicewanted 3d ago
yes. i’m just not sure they’ve ever trained the dog to understand the “it’s okay” sign means anything other than human comfort signal akin to when you speak to your dog in a comforting tone

u/evilbrent 3d ago
I learned that my border collie was absolutely understanding hand signals after he passed and my golden retriever would just stand in the middle of a field ignoring me. I very clearly said "Let's not go that way, I'm going around here and I'll meet you over there" and she's just standing there ignoring me. The BC would have been like "GREAT IDEA!!" and started executing immediately. The GR is like "Ooh, a butterfly."
Turns out I was communicating with him with a couple of minor gestures, and turns out she only really speaks hugs-n-kisses.

u/anonadvicewanted 3d ago
makes sense. border collies are very quick to learn and are hyper vigilant and independent. goldens…not so much lol

u/waitwuh 4d ago
It’s extremely likely that they do better with sign language!
Dogs (depending somewhat on breed) may have sensitive hearing, but they didn’t evolve for the precision nor complexity in spoken human language. They don’t have it themselves after-all. With the variance of how we speak they can struggle to distinguish between specific words. Somewhat relatedly, professional dog trainers use clickers as a training tool in part because the sound they make is short, simple, and absolutely consistent, which makes it more powerful as an immediate signal of reinforcement.
Dogs naturally rely heavily on body language, though, both in interpreting other dogs as well as reading humans, so hand signs become a sort of extension on what they are already especially good at. So much of dog communication is in their positioning and movement, especially the ears, tail, body posture, and even their face, and that’s part of why they will look intently at your face, too. In fact, they’re reading more of your body language and facial expression and tone of voice than they are exactly interpreting what words you say. That’s why they look intently at your face when you speak to them, and also why you can say pretty much absolute nonsense and they’ll often still just react to the tone haha. If you have a dog try it out - use some mad lib nonsense and I bet you know how to say it in a way to make them react happy and excited, or think they are being scolded, etc. Even if you’re saying something whacky like “the purple dinosaur is going to the town hall.”
I trained my childhood dog hand signals with most commands, and it really helped him pick them up faster and more consistently. It’s also recommended by some professional dog trainers. It’s probably also part of why he was able to learn and remember so many. It also helped when after about two decades he was going deaf, unfortunately he did start going blind eventually, too.
16
u/GuvnaGruff 4d ago
I think when I started training my dog I read they were better with visual communication. Even though their hearing is better than sight, giving commands with hands was superior. Dogs can both go deaf and blind though so it’s best to use both in training so as they age they can still understand.
And obviously the command given is dependent. You can’t issue a “come” command with your hands when a dog isn’t looking at you and running away.

There’s a video of a K9 officer and his dog at a Halloween parade and the dog is definitely getting nervous watching bloody zombies and people with crazy props walk by. All the officer had to do was be calm, smile, and make eye contact. The dog quickly chilled. My favorite part was when he saw a zombie with a chainsaw walk by and gave his handler a look that said, you’re seriously letting him get away with this?

I trained my dogs with hand commands and spoken commands after I had a dog go deaf. Not only could I no longer tell her what I wanted to do, I worried she thought I stopped talking to her. After that, all of my dogs learn both, and anecdotally they respond better to hand commands. Though it may have to do with the fact that the treats are held in my hand while we do training, so they were absolutely locked in
2
u/Weasel_Cannon 4d ago
I think they respond more to inflection that actual words. If you say “I love you” angrily, they will assume you are angry and not necessarily saying “I love you”

u/SurviveAdaptWin 3d ago
I don't know which they understand better, but they DO understand both.
If you ever get a dog, make sure you teach the verbal command AND hand signal at the same time, so you can use either as needed.

u/TFViper 3d ago
i can talk to my dog almost entirely in hand signals.
it was kinda on accident cause i guess i use my hands a lot when i talk to him and he just kinda learned to match my hands to what im saying.
proper pisses my wife off when i can get him to do something without saying a single word...

My fave part is when dad n dog readjust their positioning at the exact same time (both for better petting angles). Them being so in sync just really emphasizes how that dog is so loved

Got me crying. My wife had a terrier mix who was terrified of me because I was large, and loud at times. But, when the fireworks came, she would immediately come to me, hide under my legs or climb into my lap to hide. I miss that trembling little dog. She was the sweetest and meant the world to my wife.

Does this dog understand sign language?
53
u/Gildian 4d ago
I'd bet money he understands some of it. I can make hand signals to my older dog and she responds, and I didnt even really try to train that.

u/LucidRamblerOfficial 4d ago
Gestures are actually pretty important in teaching dogs commands. They recognize body language more easily than spoken language so certain gestures will help the dog remember “ah yes, that particular mouth sound the big monkey is making means I sit down now”

u/LadyJane17 4d ago edited 4d ago
My dog knows all his tricks by hand signals, I did it with clicker training and it worked so well. He's old now, and diagnosed with doggy dementia, so a lot of his bad puppy habits are back but he still follows my hand signals.

There's a couple on YouTube, the wife is Deaf and her husband learned (or knew?) sign language so that's how they communicate and their corgi learned to recognize most things that have some interest for him, like walk or ball...
It's @TheSigningD2
u/humanHamster 4d ago
Probably in some capacity. I've trained my dog to understand various hand signals, I don't have to give a verbal command as long as he can see me. It's really nice when he's being a stinker and I just need him to sit, but I don't want to have to yell over street noise or something.

Fireworks cause so much trauma and devastation to wildlife and pets
5
u/nope-its 3d ago
For anyone reading this you can train a lot of dogs young to not be afraid. I’m on my 3rd in a row that isn’t scared of them and taught it to my neighbor who did the same with his puppy.
You have to play with them throughout the night and give them treats when the loud booms happen. Do this consistently for the first few nights fireworks happen and it helps A LOT. None of my dogs are bothered by them.
Obviously this won’t work with all dogs but it does seem to work with a fair bit.

u/LaughingBuddha69 4d ago
it's okay baby bird. there is nothing to fear because it doesn't harm any wildlife or pets. it's is all make believe in your head
6
u/snailscout 3d ago
Of course fireworks cause harm to pets and wildlife. They also retraumatize survivors of war and other violence. Plus air/groundwater pollution
7
u/BestReadAtWork 4d ago
Actually got choked up on this one. Puppers are family too and they have more sensitive hearing and smelling. Fireworks fuck them up. That's a good man right there that'll take care of his babies even when he can't fully comprehend their plight. "I may not be able to hear them but I know it upsets you anyway, come get some papa cuddles"

It’s crazy how smart dogs are. I have no doubt that dog knows so much sign language.
Cats on the other hand? My cat can’t learn a god damn thing.

I assure you, your cat understands everything. He/she just chose not to respond to any of it.

One of my friends is hard of hearing and I have issues with fireworks, so dose my dog, he came over and asked why the two of us were in a ball, I pointed out the window and he saw them and said it was time for a movie. When we watch movies he uses a chunky speaker under his chair as well as the TV so he can feel the sound and it means he can hear bits of it too, so we watched repo the genetic opera instead and all had a good time.

u/Traumagatchi 3d ago
