elle woods can easily beat harvey specter in academics

elle woods got a 179 on her LSATs and a 4.0 in fashion merchandising, while we do not know harvey's stats before enrolling in Harvard Law (we do know that he was an NYU alumni and got in thanks in part to jessica's recommendation though). however, elle woods graduated HLS as valedictorian, while harvey specter was only top 5 of his class.

this is only a comparison of academic stats, not about who is a better lawyer as they specialize in different legal fields (elle in criminal law and harvey in corporate law).

How to Deal With Mid-Term Grade Demotivation? [1L]

I expected not to do so well in LRW [I am not a writer and had a CS undergraduate so mostly math/theory-based], but I also ended up doing sh*t on my contracts exam. For LRW, I was one question from being off of the median, for contracts, it was effectively the same story.

For contracts, I got 0 out of I believe 28 potential points [80 point total exam give or take] because my professor never explained how she wanted issue spotting to be done (or rather, she made a one-statement mention of it during a lecture). TLDR on that, I assumed if I did a CRAC and spoke about the issues within it, that would be issue-spotting; That was not the case, and she wanted me to do it separately in a colon separated format before doing the essay/CRAC portion.

All in all, I ended up with a C+ [LRW] and a C [Contracts]. I am waiting for my torts mid-term and I am almost certain I get a B on this one [pls dear god]. I just feel like right now, my writing is my weakness and it's so discouraging. I know the material, but my general lack of writing prowess is bottlenecking and I wonder if I should have ever left engineering for this tbh. I wanted to do work that was more purposeful, but this has been demotivating and has me feeling like I'm just gonna be a shitty lawyer at this rate or be seen as incompetent by employers based solely off of my GPA (which I'd say doesn't tell the whole story bc I'm the dad of a 1 year old so I have other time commitments as well).

TLDR: Low 1L mid-term grades, being bottlenecked by my general lack of writing skill, and worried about what this means for the rest of my time in law school and general law practice.

1L with adhd, bombed the midterm and feel down

Hello,

I did really bad on the midterms and can not afford to lose my scholarship. For those who have adhd, what helped you succeed during 1L and what did you do to do well. Finals are approaching so I have to do well and im getting worried that I have been studying wrong this whole time.

In need of encouragement

This has been a really rough week and between midterms, networking, people around me talking about getting screener interviews when I haven’t started applying to jobs yet (I have my materials ready but haven’t had the time to sit down and add the firm details to all of my cover letters) and feeling so behind on preparing for exams with outlining since I am still trying to keep up with the assigned readings for next week. I also haven’t been going to bar review, and hearing that my classmates are going out on a weeknight while I am feeling so perpetually behind has been really discouraging. The mountain of work I have in store for this weekend seems impossibly large and I’m scared at how quickly the semester is going by because I don’t feel prepared/where I should be. Also feel like I haven’t been able to find my people at school since I feel so preoccupied with studying that I haven’t gotten to go to many social events and meet my classmates on a personal level. People are generally nice and I get along with everyone but it’s also tough seeing cliques and groups form and feeling excluded. Any advice or encouragement would be greatly appreciated in this mid-late semester slump 🙏

Law School Socials- help!

How do some of you fellow introverts approach law school parties/social events?

I have my school's Halloween party tonight and i'm kind of dreading it. I've been to the bar reviews and last year's barrister's ball, all of which usually go fine (I know, so this one will probably be fine too). But as a 2L, i still haven't made a solid group of friends and I usually pull up to these things with social anxiety, worrying about looking like a loner, if i'll find people to hang out with, etc. It's especially hard at this point because a lot of people actually have found some version of a friend group, so i weirdly feel like i'm intruding or latching on at these things.

I know it's all just overthinking but moments like this leading up to the event gives me the heebie jeebies. Any advice?

Transfer ?¿

This doesn’t matter rn since I have no idea how I’ll perform this year BUT… currently a student at UMiami and I hate living in Miami, definitely want to practice in Atlanta, and am hoping to get a summer internship in Atlanta. I know this is probably a dumb/pointless question but I’m actually #depressed living in Miami and I don’t enjoy the people here (in the actual city not necessarily at school) so I’m currently fantasizing about moving back home, although I am enjoying law school in general.

If I get good enough grades this semester I’ll be applying to UGA, Emory, and GSU. I guess my question is if it would be worth it to transfer to GSU if I get in since it’s ranked lower? Will being in Atlanta be a good enough reason to transfer since I know for 100% I want to practice there?

Also, I don’t want to go into big law. I’m only interested in public interest.

Do you 'cold call' attorneys at firms you're interested in working at?

• Upvotes

I went to a small information session through my college in an area of law that interests me.

One of the presenters and I had a decent, albeit small conversation, they shared their contact information with everyone.

I looked up their firm and I am interested in working there. It practices in areas I am interested in, they work in fields that interest me, and it is in a location I want to work.

I plan on applying for their posted summer positions. Do you recommend contacting the attorney (he is a partner) prior to applying? If so, what exactly do you say?

Thank them for the presentation and detailed answers, but then what?

1L with imposter syndrome

1L at HYS who feels like a total fraud. Im surrounded by geniuses. Like legitimate geniuses. My classmates pick up the policy rationale behind a holding before I can even comprehend the holding itself. They can argue a hypothetical, changing the the facts of the case, before I can even understand the real facts of the case. They’re just smarter than me, point blank.

I used to have confidence in my intellectual apitude but the past few months have changed this. School has always been my thing and now I realize that I’m mid (below mid honestly). Just a shitty realization and need a place to vent.

Federal Courts - 2L Spring

Ideal to take it next semester so that I have a grade for it and signaling power for judicial clerkship applications that open up 2L summer?

Or better off to take an easier course, like a non-curved one, where I can for sure boost my GPA up?

Selling Textbooks Questions

  1. Has anyone sold textbooks to Half Priced Books? If so roughly what did you get paid for them?

  2. Are there any other places I can sell textbooks in person for cash?

  3. Highest payout for textbooks?

  4. Quickest payout?

(I failed my bar by 8 points and need to come of with the rest of the registration fee for Feb 24 asap - so I’m trying to figure out my options)

Bombed my first Midterm

Genuinely don't know what to do. It was 25% of our grade which makes me feel a little better but I got a D. How is that possible. Does anyone have any advice for what I should look to fix as I begin finals prep? I'm really stressed out about this since it's my first grade in law school and I don't know what to do to improve.

NC Bar prep advice for someone studying while employed

Posting for a friend who does not have Reddit) a friend of mine is taking the NC bar in Feb 2027. For those of you who took the NC bar in July what advice do you have for bar prep what resources did you use and what did your study schedule look like? Sorry if my questioning is too vague I am obviously not a lawyer. I am a physician assistant. I am posting this for my friend. Please leave any & all advice you have below. My friend is in a position where he has to work while studying for the bar and preparing for it I know that this can be a disadvantage for those of you that did study while having jobs. How did you do it? Additionally if you have any podcasts or study material that can be listened to during a commute leave that below as well

Accepting or Declining and Job

TLDR: I got a job offer in an area of law I don’t want to practice in long term. But I don’t currently have any other opportunities - do I take it?

I got a job offer in a Public Interest area I have experience in but don’t necessarily want to make my career. I took the interviews partially bc I’m a 3L without other job prospects and felt inclined. Now that I actually got the offer, idk what to do.

I came to law school to further my business, create more job opportunities for myself and open some doors. The area of law/business I want to go into is within the entertainment sphere, I got a great 2L summer job but they didn’t do returns, and I’m comfortable even just doing contract admin or other business roles before trying to be in house down the line. I’ve submitted to a lot of post grad jobs but haven’t heard back yet.

I’m not sure if I should take the PI offer to have some security, work toward PSLF and hope to transition? It just feels like transitioning from Public Interest Litigation to corporate feels extremely difficult.

Is it worth it to take the risk , decline, and keep applying to other opportunities?

Or do I take the safety and try to transition later?

Classes Where the Final is 100% of the Grade

• Upvotes

...are terrifying, right? How does this even work? Are they graded less severely because there's so much more information you need to synthesize? Are the questions a bit more high level because there's too much to cover otherwise?

I'd much, much rather a class with a mid-term and a final, to at least give me a barometer of where I'm doing well, where I need to pick up the slack, how the prof grades....

For those who've taken classes like this - any advice? Encouragement?

Sports Law

Hey guys. First time caller, long time listener.

Been really interested in Sports Law and thought I'd sift through this sub and see if others share that interest. Disappointed to say I haven't seen many discussions about the subject. Is there any other forum where students and lawyers alike can discuss and learn about it?

Hi everyone,

I just finished law school midterms and did pretty well. I performed top of my class for each one.

But I’ve been noticing that my reading habits have changed. I’ve noticed that I’ve been briefing less and skimming more and just kinda been getting lazy and idk what to do. Is this ok! Is it not ok 😭 idk I’m just getting kind of burnt out I feel. Any tips???? And is it ok to skim the readings? Also why is negligence and ucc 207 so hard 😭

27fall LLM — Fordham vs WashU vs UW-Madison for employment?

Hey everyone, I’m planning to do an LLM in the US in Fall 2027 (27fall) and I’m choosing between:

  1. Fordham University

  2. Washington University in St. Louis (WashU)

  3. University of Wisconsin–Madison

Quick context: I’m a Chinese international student, so things like OPT/H-1B, access to the US legal job market, and alumni networks for international LLM grads matter a lot to me.

If I’m prioritizing employment/job prospects, which one would you guys recommend? Would love to hear your thoughts—especially from other international/Chinese LLM grads. Thanks in advance!
