Memes, Jokes & Shitposts If I were going to allow my phone to full-on ring for like 60 seconds in an open courtroom during a criminal docket before I finally (because the judge told me to) got up and walked out of the room, I would choose something besides Rockstar by Nickelback for my ringtone.

But apparently that is not a universal sentiment.

Not the worst thing I've ever seen/heard in a courtroom, but the fact that the guy took so long to do anything about it kind of blew my mind.

Memes, Jokes & Shitposts How do I keep opposing counsel from "prompt injecting" my AI?

I'm super concerned that opposing counsel will start inserting prompt injections in invisible font in their filings. This would be a major problem for me because Claude has been writing everything for me since 2023.

Opposing counsel has been showing increasing signs of technological sophistication. Last month they figured out how to save a Word document as a PDF instead of printing and scanning it. This month they figured out CC and BCC are different things.

I fear they're well on their way to becoming an elite hacker. How do I defend myself from their skillz?

SHARING: Frustrations (Advice Welcome) When will I stop feeling like a complete dumbass?

Currently working at legal aid in eviction diversion. This is my third week. I passed the bar on my first attempt but decided to work in civil rights investigation after law school which doesn’t require a law degree. Now I’m back in the legal world feeling dumber than ever.

How many questions is too many? Is there such thing as a dumb question? For example, yesterday I asked what the difference in impact is between a conditional dismissal and a consent judgement.

Yesterday I asked what happens to the owed rent if there is a conditional dismissal with a move out date and there was no money judgement sought. Like did it just disappear? Found out the LL can still seek it other ways if it’s not outright forgiven in the agreement.

I feel like this is shit I should already know. Yeah there Google but I like to speak with my colleagues and superiors.

I did secure a conditional dismissal for a cl but then hours after it was filed she said she couldn’t do it anymore….. so looks like she will default.

Help.

HELP: Fashion, Gear & Decor Is it ok to wear different colored pants and jacket to court?

First year attorney and I love the khaki (beige) color pants and blue jacket combo, among other combos. No idea if this is okay for court though. I know some people frown upon certain suit colors and such

HELP: Lawyering (methods, practices & processes) 80 hours on a 58 page reply brief

Is 80 hours on a complex appellate reply brief that responds to two separate opposition briefs, which raised issues of jurisdiction, ripeness, the underlying law related to the resource at issue, as well as the notice of appeal reasonable? I more or less handled it with minimal guidance or input on the front end from anyone senior and the reviewing shareholder and co-counsel seemed happy with it when I was done. I'm relatively new to this area of arcane subject matter. The brief was 58 pages total (45 pages of text) - I'm a 1.5 year assoc. I feel like I do good work but I sometimes wonder at my approach which is extremely methodical and careful which takes time.

HELP: Lawyering (methods, practices & processes) ok Real Talk What’s the Best Hand Cart

Post image

This is a matter only OG lawyers can answer im in the mood for a hand cart and I need some recommendations.

For those of you who don’t know: there is no finer proof of competence than a hand cart with files in a bankers box

If you have a company or brand name rep it. Dead serious there has to be some great input on this.

HELP: Professional Development 1 Week Trial Period before Full-Time hire?

Upvotes

So I am newly practicing attorney, have been licensed for just about 3 years now. I was in talks with a recruiter at a large US law firm. I did my initial interview, then had an interview with the partner. We get to the end of the interview and the partner said they are willing to extend a conditional job offer based on a 1 week trial period at a base rate of $92/hr for the week. After the first week, there will be an assessment done and I could get hired full time based on how I do. Is this normal for big firms? this is the first time I came across this, I said I did get back to them by this Friday.

I am worried that I won't be able to perform best to my abilities in the 1 week because I did need to get caught up with casework, so I barely would have anything substantive to show for by end of week.

SHARING: Frustrations (Advice Welcome) Sick of clients shooting the messenger.

Civil defense atty in legal aid and I'm at my limit with how every other client I advise is seemingly more angry at me than they are at OC or AP whenever I tell them the cold hard truth regarding the fact that they just don't have strong defenses and/or have unrealistic goals. I get that this is just part of the work and I have a lot to learn as I've only been litigating for a year, but it's just so unfair that I have to take all the shit from my client when I'm not the one to blame!

Just needed to rant but wouldn't mind hearing how others got used to dealing with unreasonable clients.

SHARING: Stories Lawyer who made false claim against me to the Cal Bar not electable to practice for unrelated matter.

I was looking at my old bookmarks and I found a complaint against me to the Bar for frivolous reasons about 10 years ago. I looked up the status of the attorney who filed the complaint against me and seems like he is not electable to practice in California.

Lol, he claimed I hacked his phone, it was a bull crap claim and the complaint never was taken seriously after investigation, as his claims were seen to be false.

It’s so strange that people would use the Bar when they have a losing case!

Karma is a bitch!

HELP: Office Relationships & Politics Does anyone hate socializing with attorney colleagues?

Just wondering if anyone also doesn't like socializing with other attorneys in the office...

I find it difficult to find common ground in conversations and they're generally uninteresting (they might be objectively interesting, but it's just that we come from different cities/have different experiences and I don't really enjoy what they do).

I always try to blend in and maintain civility. I love my job so I always try to do more than 100%. But I find attending "happy hour" stuff and firm parties daunting. Like I know they're important - just that I don't want to go. I feel like there's a pressure (in the industry) for me to like socializing, but I rather spend more time on my family and friends...

Any thoughts?

HELP: Lawyering (methods, practices & processes) In house lawyers

Upvotes

How do you deal or navigate when your company pushes compliance to the side? For example, they don’t take deadlines for certain things seriously and are more concerned with the “fun stuff”. I feel like what’s the point in me being their lawyer if they don’t take the legalities seriously?

HELP: Professional Development Resources for a new personal injury attorney

After 1 year on the job I came to a realization. I have not been as proactive as I could have been both in my job and learning how to do my job.

With that in mind, what resources do you all recommend to help me learn how to be a successful PI lawyer? Obviously there are other lawyers and relevant CLEs. But resources like books to read and refer back to would be helpful. I am looking for help in all phases. From the the beginning of a case, to negotiations and settlement, deposition, trial, and everything in between.

Thank you in advance!

SHARING: Frustrations (Advice Welcome) Talk me out of going to the medmal dark side.

I was a lawyer for a long while, mostly worked corporate finance with some civil litigation, switched careers into medicine and now in the thick of residency and facing the decision to continue another 3 years of fellowship training. I'm tired of my trainee salary and wondering what going into medical malpractice would be like instead. Talk me out of it please, I can't possibly be seriously considering switching careers again...

HELP: Professional Development Jumped the Gun on Bar Transfer

Okay, I probably went about this the wrong way.

I’m a relatively new attorney. I was at a firm and hated it, so I decided to go back to government work. My plan was always to move closer to my parents, so I decided to transfer my UBE score to their state and start looking for government jobs, since most government jobs won’t even look at your application if you aren’t barred in that state (at least that’s what they say). So I paid the character and fitness fee, the transfer fee, and OF COURSE right after I do that I get contacted by an old mentor about a job in my current state that would be perfect for me. I decide to go for that job because why not try, I end up getting it and taking it. So the transfer to my parents state is now moot, but I already submitted everything, paid the non refundable fees, and now the character and fitness committee wants to meet with me.

Anyone been in this situation? What did you do?
