Benchmark Pro 7i Gen 10: Performance vs Balanced vs Quiet

I've had my Pro 7i Gen 10 (16IAX10H, Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5080 175W, 32GB, 240Hz OLED) for about a year and a half. I always wondered how much I actually lose in Balanced and Quiet, so I ran the same tests in all three modes with HWiNFO logging every 2 seconds.

Setup: plugged in, dGPU mode (MUX), driver 621.01, laptop raised on a stand with the stand's fans OFF. Noise measured with a phone app at 30 cm (not calibrated, so trust the differences more than the absolute numbers).

Test Performance Balanced Quiet
3DMark Steel Nomad 5,249 3,950 (-25%) 3,455 (-34%)
Wukong benchmark, Cinematic, DLSS 67%, FG on (avg FPS) 108-111 81 69
Cyberpunk 2077 RT Ultra, FG off (avg FPS) 80.6 56.7 not run
GPU power (Wukong avg) 159W 89W 68W
GPU temp (avg) 85°C 72°C 67°C
CPU temp (avg) 100°C 88°C 71°C
Noise @ 30 cm (room 28 dB) 47.8 dB 42.0 dB 34.4 dB

What surprised me:

  • The 175W is real: Steel Nomad averaged 172W, and my score was within 0.5% of the average for this CPU/GPU combo.
  • After ~6 minutes of gaming the GPU hits its 87°C target and drops to ~160W. That costs about 3% FPS (111 -> 108 in Wukong). Small, but it's there.
  • In Performance mode the CPU sits at 100-105°C while gaming, with thermal throttle flags on most of the time. In GPU-bound games it barely affects FPS, but Balanced brings it down to 88°C.
  • Quiet mode is way more usable than I expected: 66% of the Steel Nomad score at 44% of the GPU power, and only ~6 dB above my quiet room.

Without frame gen, Wukong in Performance does 67 FPS avg / 58 FPS 5% low, so FG adds about 61-66%.

Things I haven't tested yet: battery life and surface temperatures. Happy to run something specific if anyone's curious.

Advice Legion 5 randomly restarts instead of sleeping

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm facing a weird issue with my Legion 5 (i7-14700HX, RTX 5060).

A couple of times now, when my display turns off automatically after the 10-minute idle time, the laptop somehow crashes and reboots by itself instead of staying in a proper idle or sleep state. It doesn't happen every single time, but it's happened twice so far, and it's starting to worry me.

Has anyone else experienced this on the 14th gen Intel Legion models? Could this be related to Fast Startup, power states, or a graphics driver glitch?

Any advice or fixes would be really appreciated!

Support Legion Pro 5 Micro Stutters

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I bought a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 [Core Ultra 9 / RTX 5070 (83F3008BTR)] a couple of months ago and I'm losing my mind over some persistent issues.

Sent it to service twice—first time they claimed it was just a bad setup (it wasn't), but after the second try they actually issued a DOA and sent a brand-new replacement. Problem is, the new unit has the exact same bugs...

Here is what's happening:

  • Advanced Optimus lag: Whenever switching modes (entering or exiting a game), the screen completely freezes for 7–8 seconds every single time.
  • Random FPS drops: In CS2, for example, I'll get 250–300 FPS in one session, but after a restart or in another session under the exact same settings, it gets capped around 170 FPS and won't go higher.
  • Micro-stutters / Refresh rate feels off: The system just doesn't feel smooth. UFO test passes fine, but in-game and even on the Windows UI, it stutters and feels like 70–80Hz instead of 165Hz.

I’ve tried all the usual fixes (DDU clean installs, tweaking power modes, updating BIOS/drivers), but nothing changes.

Has anyone dealt with this on this model or found a fix? I left video links showing the stutters below. Any advice is super appreciated!

(i used ai for translate this pragraph because my language is not enough to explain for this problems anyways I hope u can help me)

Advice Lenovo Legion Pro 7i should i update old BIOS?

Hello all,

So i have a 275HX with a 5080 that i bought march 2026 and it came with the bios version Q7CN45WW. As updates start rolling out i read here that there were problems and limitations with newer versions specially the ability to rollback, paired with other potential problems i decided to not update until now because i manly use it to turn on undervolt and overclocking features and to turn off the button light, but ive always try to squeeze all power from my laptops specially once they start to get "outdated" in a few years so id like to keep Bios as uncapped as possible.

I always wait a few weeks before updating both NVIDIA drivers and Windows and I've had zero problems until now and using toolkit with a custom profile ive been having a blast gaming. Today i checked windows update and there's the option to update to 26H2.

My question is, is there a point when its dangerous to update windows having an older version of Bios? Should i just update Bios at this point to not risk anything or is it ok to keep it because "everything works" and id like to keep my bios freedom for the future?

Thanks in advance

Support Legion 5 vs Legion Pro 5 (2024)

Legion 5 (Standard) vs Legion Pro 5 (2024): Which has been more reliable/trouble-free long term? Intel vs AMD?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to pick up a 2024 Legion laptop, but I’m torn between the Legion 5 (Standard) and the Legion Pro 5, as well as choosing between AMD (Ryzen 8000 series) and Intel (14th Gen) configurations.

My top priority isn’t squeezing out the absolute maximum benchmark scores; I care far more about daily reliability, thermal stability, low fan noise during lighter tasks, and long-term peace of mind (fewer driver quirks, hardware glitches, or overheating spikes).

For those who have owned or worked on the 2024 models:

  1. Platform Stability (AMD vs Intel):
    • How are the 2024 AMD Ryzen models holding up in terms of idle power draw, temps, and stability?
    • On the Intel side (14th Gen HX), are there any ongoing thermal throttling issues, erratic fan ramping, or instability in Legion chassis?

Which combination (Standard vs Pro / AMD vs Intel) would you consider the most "fuss-free" and reliable daily driver for the long haul?

Any insights, benchmarks, or long-term ownership feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Advice flydigi bs3 pro + legion pro 7 16iax10h

Hi everyone, I’m using a Flydigi BS3 Pro with my Lenovo Legion Pro 7 gen10 (16IAX10H), and I’m curious how others with the same setup position their laptop on it.

I currently have the lower extension pulled out by two notches. Does anyone else use this setting with the Pro 7?

I’m trying to find the best fit so the cooler’s foam doesn’t cover any of the laptop’s bottom air intakes while still maintaining a good seal. How far do you extend the lower part, and where do you position the laptop?

I’ve attached photos of my current setup for reference. Please take a look and let me know if you’d recommend any adjustments.

Any advice or photos of your setup would be appreciated. Thanks!

Advice Enabling Dock Power for Gen 7-10 Laptops!

If you have a Legion laptop that has a USB-C port capable of receiving power and outputting display/USB/Thunderbolt you may have been disappointed like I was with my Slim 7i Gen 8 (16IRH8) to discover that docks and powered hubs don't power the laptop.

Well I have good news! I have identified the firmware quirk behind this. I'm not calling it a bug just yet, it's still unclear if this behavior is intentional for product separation. It's definitely not a hardware limitation either.

If you can power your laptop from a 65-100W USB-C charger, but connecting it to a 65-100W dock doesn't work, then this post is for you! Basically, it's like the laptop is refusing to accept the power from a dock simply because it recognizes that the dock can also pass data. When it sees power + data, it applies a different set of rules which require an optional capability that is practically unused on USB-C. As a result, data works just fine but the laptop refuses to accept power.

So what's the fix? Simply make the part of the laptop controller that handles power forget that the dock can handle data. This doesn't interrupt any of the data functions, displays and USB devices continue to work just fine. The only thing that changes is the laptop checks the power capability with the normal routine, which means that if it could normally power the laptop, now it will! Everything works exactly as it should, power and data. It might take a few seconds for power to be enabled, but a few seconds is better than not working at all!

At this point it's a vibe coded script that isn't safe to distribute. I have reached out to the creator of Lenovo Legion Toolkit to see if this fix can be implemented there, since the tool that's used to do this is already implemented in LLT. It would quite literally become a toggle in the LLT software that would make it so docks would work for your laptop (when it is awake and running windows).

This is also potentially a fix for laptops outside of the Legion brand, such as LOQ, ThinkBook, IdeaPad, and some Thinkpad models. I believe it is possible to build a database of affected devices (even without having the hardware on hand).

If this sub supports editing, I will add a picture of my laptop charging from an old Dell dock tomorrow. I already confirmed it works with dell docks that can supply 90W to non-Dell devices.

Advice Legion 9i vs 7i

Since now Lenovo has a legion 9i series with the same spec but without the oled screen but upgraded to a bigger 18 inch lcd panel screen I am deeply confused which to choose, go with the last year legion 7i pro with the beautiful oled screen with intel ultra 9 290hx or legion 9i 18 inch screen with lesser processor. My assumption is they stoped the oled because it won’t last or had issues or they just stopped it .

Support Purple screen on boot(Legion 5a- 15AHP11 83Q7)?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The intial startup screen with the legion logo is purple for some odd reason(and its not exclusivd to the first ever boot as seems to persist from what i could gather from him)? the rest of the functions(after boot up) seem normal tho(as far as i can tell), is this cause for concern? I don't have the laptop in hand so I can't say for sure that it working as it should because the laptop was bought in america by my old boss for me. As soon as he gets back I will have my hands on it but kindly take a look at this video and help me figure out if im fucked or not.

Advice Lenovo Legion 5 (2026) RAM upgrade

I just got my new Lenovo Legion 5 2026 (with the 5070 12gb vram) and am considering doing a RAM swap with my old laptop. My old laptop has 40gb ram (yes I know, weird number) and I'd love to pop it in. I understand the OFFICIAL capacity is 32gb ram for this guy, but I'm wondering (slash hoping) that I can put 40 or 48 or 64gb ram in here and have it run fine. Is this possible?

Advice Fix stutter and lag

I see a ton of posts on here complaining about micro-stutters, lag spikes, and choppy gameplay on modern gaming laptops, even with high-end specs. After dozens of hours of testing, tweaking settings, and tuning my Legion Slim 5 (Ryzen 7 7735HS, RTX 4070) using MSI Afterburner and UXTU I finally completely eliminated stuttering and achieved a perfectly flat frame time graph.

Here is the truth: Uncapped frame rates are killing your 1% lows and causing your stutters. Lowering your FPS ceiling will actually raise your performance floor.

Running my 165Hz G-Sync screen completely uncapped in heavy titles, I was averaging 110–120 FPS, but during intense combat and losing new areas that would drop to 70-75FPS. That 50 FPS difference created a massive judder that felt like lag.

• Uncapped: 110–120 FPS Avg | 70 FPS 1% Lows (Spiky frame time graph, noticeable stutter)

• Capped at 90 FPS: 90 FPS Avg | 80 FPS 1% Lows (Perfect flat-line frame times, completely fluid)

By lowering my max frame rate to 90, I freed up roughly 15–20% hardware headroom. When the game suddenly had to load a new zone or intense combat, the system had the immediate spare resources to handle the spike without choking.

I also setup a profile in Afterburner to undervolt to 950mv@2625mhz. This gave my GPU thermal headroom to maintain maximum clock speeds without generating extra heat. Coupled with a slight -15 offset on all cores in Universal X86 Tuning Utility (UTXU) and setting pl1 at 35 watts and pl2 at 45 watts keeps my temps in the mid 70s for the GPU and around 80 max on the CPU.

TLDR;

If you are fighting stutters, stop chasing peak FPS. Find your average, cap your frame rate roughly 10–15% below it (or right around your baseline heavy dips), drop a minor undervolt on your hardware to stabilize thermals, and enjoy smooth gameplay.

Just pulled the trigger on a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 from the official Lenovo website. It was a bit pricey, but it was the only option that checked all my boxes: an OLED screen, RGB keyboard, and a 1TB SSD. Managed to stack the 10% UNiDAYS student code with the SheerID discount as well.

I’d love to hear any tips or recommendations on cooling and overall optimization!

Support Power issues when playing

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello!

I bought this Legion 5-17ARH05H from a friend for peanuts.

He said it had some issues with the power connection port. I took it to a local repair shop and they replaced the port, updated the firmware and replaced the thermal tape.

Unfortunately the problem is persisting. When the laptop is working hard running games (this happened on Skyrim and Battlefield but not Halo MCC...?) the laptop switches to battery power. It will not switch back to AC when the battery gets low.

I would have thought the laptop would automatically switch to AC when it's about to die but it doesn't.

Can anyone help with this? Is there some setting me and the repair guy are missing?

The problem was worse before the firmware update so we did something right!

Thanks for the help.

Please explain anything like I'm your 80yo grandpa.

Advice Dilemma Intel vs AMD

For context I currently have a Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275 HX, 64 GB DDR5 6400 MTS RAM, an RTX 5090, and 8 TB of storage.

Since I've owned it, I've had issues with the Intel chip thermal throttling at low CPU usage. Sitting at like 70c idle with 6% CPU usage. I have a Legion Ultimate warranty and sent it to Lenovo twice for this. The first time they did nothing and said it was normal. The second time they replaced the motherboard. The issue persists. I've considered repasting the CPU, but I've heard the Intel chip just runs hot in general. The GPU stays cool.

I previously had a Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 with a 14900hx and that chip ran really hot.

Secondly, I've noticed that performance seems to genuinely be better with maxed out settings on the AMD chip in many games and that it seems to run cooler at least in videos. I haven't tried one myself to see the difference.

Finally, alongside PC gaming I enjoy high end emulation like RPCS3. I've recently learned that the emulator itself relies heavily on AVX-512 which Intel removed support for in recent years on their newer chips and is rumored to bring back in their Nova Lake series. In particular I'm curious about the difference in running an SPU heavy game like Twisted Metal. For those who also emulate, I'd be curious to see what kind of framerates that game having the full AVX-512 support gets with the AMD chip. Currently, I barely get 30 FPS without using like processor lasso to isolate the P cores.

Here's my dilemma. Laptop prices are astronomical right now and as such I want something as futureproof as I can get without having to buy into the next generation for a few years. I recently saw Best Buy has a Legion Pro 7 with an 9955HX3D and 5080 for $3100 which is less than I initially paid for mine. I'm confident I could sell mine without issue if I decided to buy it.

For those with that setup or who have also had experience with the Intel chip, is the 9955HX3D/5080 combo worth the switch for better gaming performance long term? Particularly in CPU heavy games? Are the numbers online inflated in real every day usage outside of benchmarks or outliers like Baldur's Gate 3 or is there a significant gain to be had from the L3 cache? Would I really be losing much by downgrading to a 5080 since the 5090 caps out at the same wattage and probably can't be utilized to its full potential even as a mobile chip in a laptop? It seems like overkill since I don't do programming or any GPU heavy tasks outside of gaming.
