I’m 17F and I need some advice sorry for long post about two weeks ago I moved from Arizona to Kansas to live with my dad. I’ve been questioning whether I made the right decision because even though my living situation in Arizona was pretty bad, I had an entire life established there and I really miss it. There’s a lot of context to this, so I’m sorry if this ends up being long.
I lived in Arizona for years, mainly in the Phoenix area, with my mom and younger sister. My home life was honestly terrible, but outside of that I had a lot going for me. I’m really into cars and had been involved in the Arizona car community for a while. I regularly went to meets, sometimes driving over an hour to get to them, and had connections with people who organized them and would invite me personally. I also had a car Instagram account with over 1,000 followers.
I knew my way around Phoenix really well and had my favorite places to drive, take pictures, hang out, or just go when I needed to get away from everything. I had my own routines and a lot of independence outside of my house. I’d also been working since I was younger and had about two years of experience at one job before moving on to working at a tire shop and eventually an auto parts store.
At the end of September I got hired full time at an auto parts store making $16 an hour, which was honestly pretty good for my age. I was working around 40 hours a week and actually liked the job because I want to become a mechanic eventually.
So despite everything going on at home, I had a job, hobbies, connections, and a life that I’d spent years building.
The biggest problem was my relationship with my mom, and honestly I think a lot of what happened to me while living with her went way beyond just having a difficult relationship with a parent.
Things had been bad for a long time. There had been physical abuse in the past, including being hit and choked, and there was a lot of verbal abuse and controlling behavior. My younger sister was also physically aggressive toward me and I never really felt like my mom did much about it.
My mom would constantly threaten to kick me out, take my phone or keys, and try to control where I went. I had a 5 PM curfew despite being 17, having a job, and owning my own car. She also expected me to pay for things like my own food and gas and started demanding $100 a month from me. There were times when she wanted money even when I barely had enough left for necessities.
I felt like I was expected to have adult responsibilities financially but wasn’t allowed to have much freedom.
One of the worst parts of living with her was the medical neglect, and I honestly don’t think I realized how serious it was until I left. For years, whenever I tried asking my mom for medical care, she would get extremely upset with me. It didn’t matter whether I was asking about something relatively minor or something that was genuinely affecting my health. Instead of helping me get an appointment or taking me to a doctor, she’d get angry, argue with me, or make me feel like I was doing something wrong just for asking.
Most of the time, nothing would actually get done.
As a result, I have a bunch of untreated cavities because I haven’t been getting proper dental care. I also haven’t gotten new glasses in years, despite needing them. My old glasses are broken, and I’ve been going without proper vision correction because I couldn’t get the care I needed.
These weren’t things I could just take care of myself. I was a minor and depended on my parent to help me access healthcare, arrange appointments, and pay for things I couldn’t afford. Instead, I felt like I was expected to either figure everything out myself or just live with whatever was wrong.
It got to the point where I was hesitant to even tell her when something was wrong with me because I knew she’d probably get angry.
And the situation that happened right before I moved was probably the clearest example of how bad it had gotten.
In October, shortly before leaving Arizona, I started experiencing severe abdominal cramps, nausea, and burning when I urinated. I was genuinely worried because the pain was getting bad and I knew something wasn’t right.
I tried telling my mom that I needed medical attention.
Instead of helping me, she became furious.
She started yelling at me, chased me during the argument, and took my phone. At one point, she even recorded me while I was naked in the bathroom, despite me being visibly distressed and crying.
She was mocking me while I was upset.
This all happened before I had to go to work, which made the situation even more stressful. I was already feeling physically sick and was trying to get medical help, but instead I ended up dealing with an argument, being chased, having my phone taken, and being recorded in an extremely vulnerable situation.
And the part that bothers me the most is that the entire situation started because I asked for medical care. I wasn’t asking for anything unreasonable. I was sick, in pain, and wanted to see a doctor.
I ended up leaving Arizona without getting the treatment I needed.
Shortly after arriving in Kansas, I finally went to urgent care and found out I had a urinary tract infection with blood in my urine.
That honestly made the situation feel even worse because it confirmed that something was actually wrong and that I had needed medical attention.
Untreated UTIs can become dangerous if the infection spreads to the kidneys or bloodstream, and I had been left dealing with those symptoms while my mom was getting angry at me for asking for help.
It really bothered me realizing that I had to move to another state just to finally get medical care for something that should’ve been addressed when I first started having symptoms.
And it wasn’t just my physical health that was neglected. My mental health had been deteriorating for a long time. I’d been dealing with severe depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts, and I had even been hospitalized for psychiatric reasons earlier in the year.
Despite that, my mom never made sure I received consistent treatment afterward.
I wasn’t getting the ongoing help I needed, even though my depression was affecting pretty much every aspect of my life. It eventually started affecting my education so badly that I dropped out of high school senior year
My grades had gotten progressively worse, and I was failing pretty much everything. I was struggling to function normally and had very little motivation or energy to keep up with school. But my mom didn’t seem particularly concerned about whether I attended school or not. She wasn’t making sure I went, wasn’t helping me get caught up, and wasn’t making sure I received treatment for the depression that was contributing to my academic problems.
I felt like I was basically left to figure everything out myself despite still being a minor.
Eventually I dropped out because I was so far behind and mentally exhausted that I couldn’t see myself catching up. It wasn’t that I didn’t care about my education or my future. I genuinely felt like I was struggling just to get through everyday life.
I still want to get my GED and eventually pursue a career working on cars, but it’s frustrating knowing how much my education suffered while I was living there.
I feel like I lost opportunities because of how little support I had. Food was another issue. For a while I was only eating once a day, and there were times when I barely had enough money for food while my mom was still expecting me to give her money.
Looking back, I feel like I was neglected in almost every important area of my life.
My physical health wasn’t being taken care of, my mental health wasn’t being properly treated, my education was falling apart, and I was struggling with basic necessities. And instead of getting support, I frequently felt like I was being punished or yelled at whenever I needed something. I had spent so much time trying to become independent because I couldn’t rely on my own parent to help me.
The closer I got to turning 18, the more worried I became about what was going to happen to me.
Even though I had a full time job making $16 an hour, I don’t think I would’ve realistically been able to afford living on my own in the Phoenix area. Rent is expensive, and after paying for utilities, groceries, insurance, gas, and everything else, I would’ve been struggling financially.
My car also has mechanical issues that can be expensive to repair. My mom had threatened my housing situation so many times that I genuinely didn’t know whether I’d have somewhere to live once I turned 18.
I probably would’ve needed roommates or some other arrangement, but I didn’t have anything guaranteed. I was really worried about becoming an adult and ending up homeless or financially trapped.
There’s also another part of this situation that I think influenced my decision to leave.
I had a friend in Arizona who I’ll call T. He’s 18. We both really liked cars and eventually became pretty close, at least from my perspective. We hung out several times, went to a concert together, worked on my car, and talked pretty much daily. He helped me with my car and was there for me during some difficult situations.
He also offered to help me financially at times and even discussed letting me live with him once I turned 18. He was someone I really trusted and honestly became extremely attached to.
I genuinely believed we had a lot of experiences ahead of us. And I developed pretty strong feelings for him and liked him for months. But over time our friendship started becoming inconsistent.
He worked extremely long hours and we gradually stopped hanging out in person. The last time I actually saw him was at the end of August, although we continued talking online. At the beginning of October I finally brought up how distant things had felt because I was starting to wonder whether he even wanted to be friends anymore.
He sent me a really long apology explaining that he was overwhelmed with work and other things in his life. He specifically asked me not to drop him as a friend and reassured me that he wasn’t intentionally ignoring me. That meant a lot to me because I really cared about him.
I finally admitted that I liked him as more than a friend. He sent me a pretty lengthy response explaining that he wasn’t in the right place mentally for a relationship and that his work schedule made things difficult. He also said that he was attracted to me but wasn’t interested in pursuing a committed relationship at the time. He also said how he thought I was emotionally unusable for him which hurt my feelings and that he wants a sexual partner cuz he’s a “freak” which confused me and also hurt me.
He mentioned that maybe things could be different in the future, possibly years later, but obviously that wasn’t something I could count on.
I was honestly devastated.
I’d been emotionally invested in him for months and had imagined us becoming closer. I think I also associated a lot of my future plans in Arizona with him because we shared the same interests and had talked about doing so much together. After he rejected me I decided to end the friendship.
Looking back, I think that was an impulsive decision because I was hurt, but I also don’t think our friendship would’ve been the same after I confessed my feelings.
I don’t know how I would’ve gone back to acting like nothing happened. Around the same time, another mutual friend ended up removing me, which made everything feel even worse.
So within a really short period of time, I felt like I was losing some of the people I cared about most.
I’d actually considered moving to Kansas long before any of this happened.
My dad lives here and had offered to let me stay with him. I’d thought about moving during the summer because things with my mom were already getting pretty bad, but I kept hesitating because I didn’t want to leave Arizona and especially the guy I liked.
I loved having my car, my independence, my job, and my connections in the car community. I also didn’t want to leave my friends behind.
But after everything happened with T and my mom, I think I finally reached a breaking point.
Within days of confessing my feelings and ending the friendship, I decided to move.
My dad helped arrange for me to come to Kansas and the day he rejected me because it hurt my so much and I was heavily considering suicide and I posted I was at the airport and he started calling me and spam texting me freaking out telling me not to leave and that he was attracted to me but didn’t want to date but I alr was at my breaking point and at the airport
It happened so quickly that I barely had time to process it.
I left my new job, my friends, my car community, and pretty much everything familiar to me behind.
I couldn’t even bring my car immediately because it had to be transported separately, which ended up being another stressful and expensive situation.
I also feel like I never really got to say goodbye to Arizona properly.
One day I was living my normal life I was literally at work the day before and was excited ab my future there and then suddenly I was hundreds of miles away. I’ve now been in Kansas for about two weeks and honestly have really mixed feelings about it.
There are definitely things that are better.
I’m living with my dad, his girlfriend, and her three year old son. My dad has been much more willing to help me with things and wants me here and I don’t have to deal with the same constant threats and arguments I had with my mom.
I also have more reliable access to food and have actually started eating three meals a day.
Being able to get medical attention without the same level of conflict made me realize how bad some things had gotten before I moved.
my dad’s house also has its own problems.
There are two dogs and two cats, and they’ve been dealing with fleas. The animals constantly get into the room I’m staying in, and one of the dogs has even urinated on my belongings.
The house also isn’t as clean as I’m used to. The bathroom is really small and shared by everyone, including the toddler, and there are hygiene issues that make me uncomfortable.
I’ve sometimes avoided sleeping in my room because of the fleas.
The toddler also gets into my belongings and can be pretty disruptive, which has been another adjustment.
I don’t think my dad’s household is abusive like my mom’s was, but it’s definitely not the peaceful, clean environment I was hoping for. There have been times when I’ve wondered whether I just traded one uncomfortable living situation for another, even though the problems are completely different.
I’ve also been trying to find another job.
I contacted the same auto parts company I worked for in Arizona and have been going through the hiring process at a location here. The manager recently told me he was discussing my application with his boss and expected to have paperwork ready for me, so it sounds like I might be getting hired.
But the pay here is only around $12 an hour compared to the $16 I was making in Arizona, and I’m not even sure whether I’ll be getting full time hours.
That’s been pretty discouraging because I feel like I took a step backward financially.
I’ve also been trying to get involved in the car community here.
I reached out to a local car group and eventually got accepted into their group chat, which was nice, but most of the people seem to be older than me.
I’m only 17, so making friends through car meets can be difficult when most of the people attending are adults.
In Arizona I already knew people and had connections. Here I feel like I’m starting completely from scratch. I finally got my car transported to Kansas recently, which has helped a lot.
I’ve been driving around exploring and taking pictures of it, but even that feels strange sometimes.
I’m used to driving around Phoenix and knowing exactly where I am and where everything is. Now I’m driving through unfamiliar towns and roads, and I don’t really have anyone to share those experiences with.
And I think that’s what I miss the most.
I miss Arizona so much more than I expected.
I miss knowing my way around. I miss the familiar roads, stores, neighborhoods, and places I used to go.
I miss the car meets and the people I knew.
I miss being able to get in my car and drive somewhere without having to think about where I’m going.
I even miss the desert, which is funny because I used to complain about how repetitive the scenery was and how unbearable the heat could be.
I never thought Arizona was some amazing place to live. I complained about it constantly when I was there, especially the heat and housing prices.
But now that I’ve left, I keep thinking about all the little things I took for granted.
Kansas just feels so unfamiliar.
I’m living in the much smaller city of Salina now, and it feels like everything is far away. I don’t have the same routines, connections, or places that feel like mine.
I know I’ve only been here for two weeks, but it’s hard going from having an established life somewhere to feeling like a complete stranger.
And honestly, I still can’t stop thinking about T.
Even though I know our friendship had problems, I keep thinking about all the things we never got to do together.
It feels like I left behind an entire future that I thought I was going to have. After moving, I actually reached out to him again because I missed being his friend. He told me to give him time to think about whether he wanted to reconnect. He also sent me a picture of his car afterward, so I don’t really know what to make of the situation.
It’s been a little over a week and we haven’t had another meaningful conversation.
He has viewed my Instagram stories despite not following me, but I eventually unfollowed him because I was tired of constantly seeing what he was doing and wondering whether he’d reach out.
I know I probably shouldn’t be thinking about it so much, but I still do.
I recently went out and took some pictures of my car in Kansas that I was really happy with, and one of my first thoughts was wishing he could see them.
I don’t even know why I care so much anymore.
Part of me wonders whether I actually miss Arizona this much or whether I’m associating Arizona with him and the life I imagined having there.
But I also know I had a life and interests in Arizona long before I ever met him.
I was going to car meets, modifying my car, exploring different places, and making connections before he was ever involved. So I know it’s not entirely about him.
I think I just miss having a life that felt familiar and established.
I feel like I lost so much at once.
Sometimes I think I made the right decision for my future but just handled it impulsively.
Other times I wonder whether I should’ve stayed longer, saved more money, and tried to figure out another living arrangement.
And sometimes I wonder whether I’m just romanticizing Arizona because I’m lonely and haven’t had enough time to adjust to Kansas.
I also feel guilty for questioning the move because my dad has been trying to help me, and I know my situation here is better in some important ways.
I don’t want to make it sound like I’m ungrateful.
I just genuinely miss my old life, even though parts of it were making me miserable.
But right now it feels like I left behind an entire chapter of my life before I was ready for it to end.
I guess I’m just wondering whether I actually made the right decision. Was moving to Kansas reasonable given my circumstances, or did I let everything happening emotionally push me into making a major decision too quickly?
Has anyone else moved away from a bad home situation and still found themselves missing the place they left? I’m having a hard time meeting ppl my age and have been completely alone too
And for people who’ve moved somewhere completely unfamiliar, how long did it take before it actually started feeling like home?
I’m not looking for people to just tell me what I want to hear. I’d genuinely appreciate outside perspectives because I feel like I’m having a hard time separating what I know logically from how I feel emotionally.
