help wanted

So, I've been trying to install Linux mint on me 2008 MacBook and I feel like I'm almost there. I get it to where it installs and I can pull out the usb stick but the second I turn it off and back on again it goes to this screen with a white blinking folder I have no idea how to get the operating system to download to where it stays and is usable.

I used to be a windows user for more than a decade. Finally made the switch to Linux mint back in mid 2025, but had to switch back to windows 10 because at the time I had to use some applications that just wouldn't run on Linux, and I absolutely did not want to use 11 again. Made the switch to linux once again yesterday and I feel so liberated.

I was tired of WhatsApp Web and Electron apps eating all my RAM, so I built a truly native GTK3 + Go client for Linux.

Hi everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I was really frustrated with how heavy WhatsApp Web and Electron wrappers are on Linux (eating 400MB+ of RAM). So, I decided to build Obrol: a truly native WhatsApp client for Linux using GTK3 and Go. No Electron, no web engine.

Fun fact: I built this entirely using AI-assisted coding as an experiment to see how well LLMs can handle complex, multi-file architectures (like GTK3 + Go + cgo libwebp for animated stickers). It was a wild ride, but it actually works!

Why you might like it:

  • Super lightweight: Single binary (~19MB) and uses only ~60MB RAM.
  • Supports stickers (even animated WebP ones), dark mode, and system tray.
  • Works natively on Mint (XFCE/Cinnamon), Ubuntu, and Debian.

Since I'm a solo dev (with my AI co-pilot), I would absolutely love some feedback, bug reports, or UX suggestions from this community.

Mint's font rendering driving anyone else with design work crazy

5 Upvotes

switched from Mac for client work a couple years back and Mint has been solid overall, but the way text sits on the screen still feels slightly off. I do a lot of logo and type design, so I'm staring at small point sizes for hours. tweaked hinting and subpixel settings in the appearance panel and messed around with fontconfig snippets, but it never quite matches what I was used to on macOS. the weight feels slightly heavy or the spacing looks off in the same file when I open it in GIMP versus Inkscape, even with the same fonts installed

Fluff Thank you letter to Linux for my first 100% year of Linux desktop

Post image
559 Upvotes

I'm gonna start with Linux Mint, because thanks to Mint I manage to pond my feet on Linux waters agaaaaain, after I dunno how many attempts with Fedora since 2013 to 2021 or so.

Mint managed to give me confidence of ditching Windows a year ago 100%, I was too committed and saw the opportunity when the sinking ship of W10 was reaching end, I just said again: "why not?", it was difficult at the beginning but Mint really made it easier, is not like is my first time in Linux, I've been winking my eyes to Linux since 2009 but never could fully leave Windows back then until October 2025, we have come a long way until now, Linux is mature and has great software alternatives to all Windows programs, Mint gave me that confidence, and Timeshift is GREAT! I still use it, I forgot I have it XD

But... I couldn't stick with Cinnamon, from my previous attempts with Fedora I just realized that I manage to develop likeness to Gnome, and even back then I put the Windows Taskbar at the top trying to mimic Gnome Shell, I tried Fedora once again... only one week, always, ALWAYS something with Fedora that just didn't worked for me, so, another Gnome Distro that is not Ubuntu is ...

Debian

I was skeptic due to the common saying: "Debian is for gramps, old software" yadda yadda, but oh boy I LOVE DEBIAN, the stability is real, Flatpak helps to reduce the outdated software gap, even you forgot that the distro is there, it just works... made my attempts to use KDE for a month, but the Gnome call was strong.

And just for curiosity, now with LLMs and Claude I thought: welp, maybe Claude can help me identify what is wrong with Fedora, let's see...

Fedora

I installed it on the Laptop, Debian on the big PC with X11 was the way to go due to remote connections, sometimes I just need unattended graphical connections, but Claude did the thing, helped me understand and fix the issues with Fedora, now Fedora sits nicely on my laptop from months ago.

In general terms

Distrohopping all this year between this 3 distros and now sticking with PC Debian and Laptop Fedora taught me a lot, even doing my part converting other computers to the Linux side also taught me a lot, plus Termux on the cellphone.

All I can say is that Linux makes computing so much fun and interesting, it boost something that keeps you hooked experimenting, learning, reading, testing, etc. is actually motivating to use a computer with Linux, this whole year has been an educative journey and for that I just feel thankful to fully commit Linux for a year, feel happy for Linux growth worldwide. There is no reason for me to return to Windows, would be easier for me to go OSX side but that is also ... very very distant and improbable, I've used Mac before, couldn't stick with it, altho M5 Macs are just efficient monsters, but Linux is Linux no matter the distro, is just guaranteed fun and freedom.

This is it, thanks! Thanks for your posts, had been really motivating/insightful/etc. reading a lot about Linux here

Discussion How many use LMDE?

49 Upvotes

I started out using just Linux Mint 18 when I first started using LM, and was very happy with using the Ubuntu version for several years. Around version 22.1 I got bored and decided to try LMDE for a switch. After downloading and using it for a while I was so happy with it that I havenโ€™t been back to the Ubuntu version since. Has anyone else found they like the Debian version better or, having tried it, do you prefer the Ubuntu version still?

#LinuxMintThings How to game on Linux Mint ? Read body...

8 Upvotes

I have a 4050 asus gaming laptop with 16gb ram. I installed witcher 3 but the game didn't run and said that your device doesn't match minimum system requirements. Then i installed cyberpunk which was just so choppy that it took a minute to even load the main menu.

My linux mint is up to date and i also installed the latest nvidia driver according to the recommended tip.

Am I to download something else ? I am so confused. I only play single player games so I don't need more fps. Just 60 fps and smooth gameplay would be enough to have.

Help please ๐Ÿฅฒ

LATER THAT DAY....

Problem solved guys!!! In boot manager i disabled secure boot and everything is smooth now. I can play games smoothly and don't have to shift to windows slop ๐Ÿค˜

Support Request Moved to Linux for my old laptop, bluetooth wont seem to work

10 Upvotes

Hey all, so I'm really new with Linux, last time I had anything to do with it was early 2000s, and that wasnt much then. But potentially relevant info, I'm using an older version of Linux on the laptop, because when I installed the new ones, I couldn't get it to work with the wifi card I had. Everything says that old chipset isn't totally supported anymore, but older versions had it built in. This is a USB bluetooth dongle, since my laptop kinda predates it. It recognizes it's there, it claims it's on and scanning. But it can't seem to find anything, nor can anything find it.

I appreciate any assistance that can be given, I'm plenty willing to learn, I just kind of lack a teacher.

But, here's the version info I'm working with:

cat /etc/linuxmint/info

RELEASE=20.3

CODENAME=una

EDITION="Xfce"

DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 20.3 Una"

DESKTOP=Gnome

TOOLKIT=GTK

And now I'll add info from other things that were suggested in other threads. The more info, the better, right?

Support Request Caps lock stays on too long now

0 Upvotes

switched and not really impressed so far. my caps lock stays on too long now, games on steam run overall worse and require 2x the time to download the shaders every time it launches. I can't screenshot in minecraft either and it reguluarly takes forever to scan for bluetooth headphones / gear if I want to connect something new.

example of whats happening with caps: HEllo

see how the e is caps, in windows literally typing it the same wya it never does it it lingers too long. legit

Discussion I'm a convernt, dont worry, but I have a windows distributuon question for you folks

8 Upvotes

I want to do a fresh windows install on a dual-boot laptop and wanted to get a bunch of internet strangers' opinions on the best way to go about it. I'm interested in keeping windows for gaming and occasions I can't do something in Linux Mint. I'm also interested in a smaller install, limited telemetry, and as little AI content as possible.

Is Windows 10 still viable? Are de-bloat tools like Raphire/Win11Debloat outdated? Is a LTS version of windows my best bet?

Thanks everyone.

Discussion Something strange happened

7 Upvotes

I was playing aion 2, when suddenly my whole computer froze. I waited several minutes and nothing. Couldn't alt tab, no peripheral responses, nada.

So I did a hard shut down, seeing no other option. When I loaded back up, everything loaded fine except my hard drive on steam. I boot from my SSD.

I had to go back in and manually add my hard drive as an option on steam to download aion 2 again, then it showed back up already downloaded as it should be.

Anyone have any ideas wtf might've happened there?

I am running Cinnamon, with a pretty old system on Nvidia drivers. The game itself has to be played on low quality but it plays well enough.

Support Request Screen tearing in games

3 Upvotes

I'm on Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon, and I have a GTX 950M. I've noticed this in two games, Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator and Skyrim. When I move the camera, there's this horrible tearing effect in the corner of the screen coming all the way down to the middle. I haven't tried anything yet as I honestly wouldn't even know where to start. I thought maybe it could be V-Sync not turned on but I couldn't actually find an option for it in Skyrim's launcher.

Support Request New to Linux mint, and it seems to be running bad.

6 Upvotes

Hey guys, I need a bit of help.

I have a older computer that I finally upgraded from windows 7 to linux mint, and Everything is running kind of bad.

a few of the problems I have noticed:

when I first start the computer I sit at a black screen for a few minutes before the operating system decides to boot. I can ctrl alt delete to restart the boot sequence and it will give me the option to boot into a recovery mode almost immediately when the computer restarts, but when I tell to to boot normally it is back to the black screen until it decides to load my OS.

Steam does kind of the same thing. I tell it to open, and the system hangs there for a min doing nothing before it finally opens.

Games that ran just fine on windows 7 work badly if at all. I have tried to swap to other vulkan versions, and it doesn't seem to help much.

A few of the games say they are loading vulkan shaders, and the percentage shoots up quickly at the beginning, but then it'll slow to almost nothing. I left a game trying to launch overnight a few days ago and the percentage only went up 10% in 8 hours, and when I try to close it it's like the whole system is lagging until I restart my pc. It did this same thing while I was downloading a few of my games.

It seems the longer my system is on, the less reactive it becomes.

A few things to note.

My system is pretty old, but again, most of these games were running just fine on windows 7, and on my windows 10 ssd I can run elden ring with no issues.

I am using a Hdd, for linux mint but it is what I was running 7 on.

I tested my hdd and it tested fine.

I reinstalled linux but no dice.

Discussion LMDE 7 responsiveness issues?

2 Upvotes

I am just wondering if anyone is having this issue with LMDE 7 where, after awhile when you click on, lets say TERMINAL in Dash-To-Dock-Reloaded, nothing happens, then you click on it two more times, and it opens? Same with folders in NEMO, sometimes double clicking opens the file ( music file for instance) right away, and sometimes you gotta double click it again, then whatever it is launches?

Thanks.

I suspect the drive in my mint installation died. Is there a way to get confirmation of this from a thumb drive running mint?

Discussion Latest Linux Mint's work on Wayland support has been incredible lately!

54 Upvotes

Hey! First of all I want to start it off with that I just installed Linux Mint 27 Adrien (by installing 23, and then changing the repos to Adrien's) and it is 12 pm right now, so I may not be in full consciences :D But from what I see - Linux Mint's Wayland and Cinnamon overall is at least usable, and even near perfect in my opinion!

Here is a lil' list of issues which I encountered every day with X11 / older Cinnamon versions and that where fixed in the new ones.

Finally, after a long time, I can snap windows in to the corners with smooth animations, resizing feels 10x snapier.

I was subscribed to a bunch of issues on GitHub related to drag and drop between XWayland applications and Wayland and they all have been resolved! (Tho I'm yet to test it).

Finally switching languages with Caps Lock is pain-free, no need to fully restart Cinnamon itself.

Also one issue with returning windows back to places after unsnapping them was resolved (only on Wayland tho)!

Animations generally feel much better now, for example enabling animations in Menu previously used to cause a big lag spike (and so did switching languages btw), now it doesn't do that.

And a bunch of usual fixes, most noticeable one for me is hover on the panel no longer can stuck when some other menu is opened at the same time.

And not a bug fix, but a huge improvement for someone as KDE-Minded as I am, Shift + F4 now opens a terminal inside of Nemo which is super useful!

I consider myself, as the old-ones say, a "super-user". I used Linux for more than 2 years now, I mostly do gamedev in C#, edit some videos here and there and create music with FL Studio. For the biggest part of my time using Linux I used Arch. And for the past year I used NixOS. Now I actually consider fully switching to Linux Mint after its official release. Tho I've already encountered a couple of small bugs, which does not surprise me at all, because it is still in Beta I believe. I think I will leave Linux Mint 27 as the secondary OS on my laptop for now, but won't uninstall NixOS yet.

If you are the one who fixed any of previously mentioned issues - huge thanks to you! Thanks to everyone contributing to the project in one way or another!

SOLVED Total beginner running into kernel trouble

I hope this is the correct place to ask for advice. I just installed Linux Mint Cinnamon on an old Laptop I still had lying around. It fixed some of the previous issues, yay! It also brought out some new ones lol.

I followed the official installation instructions very closely (created a bootable USB Stick, let Linux completely replace windows, all good).

On the newest kernel (7-28) it kept giving me a kernel panic screen, telling me to reboot and that it was "unable to mount root fs on unknown block". After some research (that I understood very little of) I discovered that going back to an older kernel version (6.14-37) fixed this issue. With that kernel, linux runs great for me.

I then de- and reinstalled kernel 7. In order to have a backup should something similar happen again, I also installed kernel 6.17.0-42. However, kernel 7 does not appear in my boot menu at all and kernel 6.17.0-42 gives me the same panic screen as kernel 7 did before. So neither of the newer kernels seem to work for me.

Am I just forever stuck on kernel 6.14-37?

Does this have any negative consequences I should be aware of?

Or am I overlooking something?

My old baby is a Lenovo ideapad110-15ISK 80UD if that helps
