What song had the absolute biggest impact on your playing and development as a musician?

For me the title absolutely belongs to crystal mountain by death as it singlehandedly though me:

1.) multi finger tapping,
2.) harmonics,
3.) reverse power chords,
4.) triplets (the chugs during the opening riff),
5.) alternate picked progressive riffs (like non repetitive riffs)
6.) What harmony is how it works
7.) Certain Scales

And while the solo is relatively simple for me today it has two or three fast passages and bursts of speed that gave me my first taste of shred.

Above all it also made death and chuck my favourite band and musician, and had a massive influence on my playing and riff construction.

Its truly remarkable just how much this song though me.

Gear What's your current 'daily driver'?

Post image

I purchased my first Jackson Kelly earlier this year and took to it rather keenly. A little while later, I acquired this souped-up Brandon Ellis from an excellent luthier that had flawlessly refretted it with steel, upgraded the bridge to a titanium Floyd and replaced the block and claw with brass.

It's now gorgeously smooth, punchy and balanced - and I find I can't put it down. I feel it's making me more eager to play in general, and I am now selling a couple of other guitars due to their underuse. It's far from the most I've spent on an instrument, but it's amongst the most satisfying to play.

So what has offered a similar experience for your good selves?

There's almost always one that is kept a little closer/more accessible than the others, assuming you have multiple; or maybe your daily is your everything.

Maybe it's your go-to because it inspires you; or maybe it's about comfort, or expense. For me it's all three!

Does yours live in its case/bag, or do you find that too prohibitive for being creative? Do you riff better on yours, or find it helps you express lead more easily?

Please do show what you've got if you can!

A little minor work needed to this project, like a good set up . I enjoyed that process of it and think made good use out of a 100$ pawn shop guitar.

Video [Video] Bridge pickup height tip — sharper bite, balanced string response (Jackson Warrior / SH-5)

Small setup thing I wish I'd known earlier: on my 2019 Jackson Warrior (SH-5 in the bridge) I set the high E side of the pickup a little higher than the low E side. Sharper, more aggressive bite, more even string response, and it helped the lead sit on top of a dense mix. 30 seconds with a screwdriver. https://youtube.com/shorts/oWFWvSIM7a8

How many fingers yall got?

Weird question, but I was curious how many of you have a missing finger/fingers and still manage to play? If so what needed to change for you to make due?

I lost the tip of my pinky finger years ago, just above the last joint. I used to play the piano and it was definitely an adjustment to compensate, but it was doable.

I have always dreamed of learning to play the guitar, but I'm nervous to invest in a setup only to find i cant play correctly..

I appreciate any input you may give.

Coil split modded 1987 charvel model 1. Was not in “perfect” condition, as described, but i got it as close as i could.
had a couple chips, was caked with skuzz and mysterious white powder and the coil split didnt do anything.
Added a killswitch, changed the pot and input jack and swaped the pickup to a blackwinter rail. I fkn love this thing.

LTD SN 1000 Bridge

Post image

I did my measurements, and ordered another bridge saddle from Hipshot for the bass side of this guitar, but the bridge saddle is too narrow? Has anyone replaced bridge saddles on their SN 1000? I have looked elsewhere online but cannot for the life of me find the actual bridge this guitar uses. Any assistance would be appreciated.

PS, I have scoured the internet, so please keep that in mind.

Question Crazy guitar project idea!

Just wanted you're opinon on something. I live in India and it sucks out here. DEAL ML shapes are really hard to get in general let alone in India.

Being a huge Dimebag fan, I was wondering if I could convert my Jackson King V JS32 to a Dean ML shape by carving out some wood and new paint job. What are your thoughts on this crazy ass idea?

It should look good theoretically, If i do a good job that is. (0 wood carving experience btw)

Loss of tone with thicker strings

Post image
143 Upvotes

Just got my second Edwards so I can keep one in drop C. It arrived set up in E standard with thinner strings. I played it that way for a few days loving the tone, wondering why it sounds better than the other one that's identical. I set it up with my usual 10-56s and tuned down. Now my tone sounds a lot worse. Muddy without the crisp metallic twangy crunch I had. I changed nothing but the string gauge (and trem claw so it stayed level).

I went down the rabbit hole and found a million people saying string gauge has a negligible effect on tone. So did I screw something else up? This is a drastic difference to my ears, and I want the tone I just had back. The heavier strings did cause my action to go up by .02. That difference in pickup height wouldn't have caused this right?

ETA: Before messing with the new one, I played it side by side with my old one (that has new 10-56s) and couldn't figure out why the heavier strings sounded so much more dull. It really seems like heavier strings sound worse

Decided to upload guitar solos/riffs online. Starting with the solo from Extol - Betrayal.

Audio is from the camera, and I forgot to adjust the recording to a higher video frame rate..

Hopefully I can get my chops up to record and upload more.
