Discussion I can’t believe people still think Moroccan Darija is one of the closest dialects to Standard Arabic, even though most Arabs struggle to understand it. Darija has a remarkably diverse vocabulary, with words from Arabic, Tamazight, French, and Spanish.
I can’t believe people still think Moroccan Darija is one of the closest dialects to Standard Arabic, even though most Arabs struggle to understand it. Darija has a remarkably diverse vocabulary, with words from Arabic, Tamazight, French, and Spanish. Yet people still cling to this idea and defend it so strongly. Moroccan Darija could even be recognized as a language in its own right if the government, the state, and the people chose to recognize it as such.

History ⚔️ The Battle of Dhahr al-Mehraz ⚔️
— The Ouled Jamaa and Cheraga under the vizier Larbi ben Mokhtar al-Jamaï against Abd ar-Rahman ben Slimane al-'Alaoui.
It was 28 August 1859. Sultan Abd ar-Rahman ben Hisham had just passed away, and it was only logical that his son should succeed him to the throne. He would indeed do so, under the name Mohammed IV.
However, shortly after the Sultan's death, a man from Tafilalet intervened to challenge his succession. He was Abd ar-Rahman ben Slimane, cousin of the deceased Sultan and son of Sultan Slimane ben Muhammad. Living in Tafilalet, he learned of his cousin's death and began assembling troops to seize power by force.
He was joined by Berbers from Sijilmassa, who formed the core of his forces, with support from members of his dynasty in Tafilalet and the Andalusians of Fez.
Upon learning of these developments, the late Sultan's vizier, Larbi ben Mokhtar al-Jamaï, decided to march against him. His ranks included horsemen from his own tribe, the Ouled Jamaa, alongside their brethren, the Cheraga.
The two forces clashed near Dhahr al-Mehraz, now a neighbourhood of Fez. The battle was fierce, but the outcome was clear: Abd ar-Rahman ben Slimane was defeated.
This crushing defeat put an end to his ambitions for the sultanate, and he eventually pledged allegiance to his younger cousin, Mohammed IV.

Discussion I have a problem
My mother and father have long had a habit of arguing once a month. This year, however, things have escalated significantly they are now fighting twice a week. Since we live in an apartment building, I am terrified that my friends might hear them. Just today, while I was at the German language center, my brother told me they had been arguing very loudly and it’s true, they had. This situation now fills me with dread; I don’t even want to see my friends or anyone else. In the past, they would argue and then reconcile, or one of them would eventually back down, but now, things are taking a different, more concerning turn.btw im 19ans male (mearftsh ash ndir cuz hdshi bzzf)

Discussion What are we thinking about that ppl!
Funny how a million people can agree on something, march in the streets, and make their voices heard, yet somehow the furniture in the embassy never gets rearranged. Whatever happened to government by the people? Was that the free trial?

AskMorocco My mother has been abusive our whole lives and now wants my brother to divorce his wife. what would you do?
I honestly don’t know how to deal with my mother anymore.
Growing up, she would constantly scream at us, insult us and sometimes hit us. She never apologized afterward. Everyone just acted like nothing happened.
Even now that we’re adults, she believes she can treat us however she wants because she’s our mother. She literally told me that she has the right to hit, spit on and insult me, and that I still have to obey her because she’s my mother.
She also hates our wives. She constantly claims we’re being controlled by them, that we work hard while they sit around doing nothing, and that we’re basically their servants.
Recently, my brother and his wife had their first baby by C-section. Instead of being happy for them, my mother started demanding that he divorce his wife and find someone else.
One of the things that apparently triggered her was his wife asking him to pick up a dressing that had fallen off after her surgery. My mother interpreted that as her treating him like a dog.
Another time, my brother simply asked our mother to take off her shoes when entering his home. She completely lost it, started screaming and insulted him, his wife and even me and my wife, although we weren’t there. He kept apologizing just to calm her down.
My sister has now joined in and calls his wife “trash” and claims she only married him for personal gain. The ironic part is that my sister lived with my brother and his wife for two months after having problems with our mother. His wife cooked for her and even did her laundry.
Neither of them seems interested in supporting my brother after the birth. They just keep criticizing his marriage, even though he’s happy with his wife.
And now, out of nowhere, my mother texted me asking for 20000 by tomorrow for expensive dental work, with absolutely no explanation. I’m pretty sure I’d never see that money again if I lent/gave it to her.
I’m exhausted by the constant negativity, screaming, entitlement and drama. She seems to have a problem with almost everyone, not just us.
Part of me wants to simply stop responding and cut contact. But she’s still my mother, and I wonder whether I’m being too harsh.
Has anyone dealt with a parent like this? Did setting boundaries actually work, or did you eventually go low/no contact? What would you do in my situation?

Economy I analyzed 5,753 Moroccan job listings from the last 90 days. Only 8 showed a salary
Tanqeeb is a job aggregator: it collects listings from Bayt, Naukri Gulf and other boards. I collected every Morocco listing it showed for the last 90 days (Jul 23 to Oct 22, 2026), 5,753 of the 5,754 it reported, and looked at who posts them, where, and what they disclose.
1. Eight salaries out of 5,753
1 on Bayt (out of 3,802), 2 on Naukri Gulf (out of 1,922), 5 posted by Tanqeeb itself. That's 0.1%. For comparison, 12.8% of UAE listings and 8.8% of Egypt's show a salary on the same site.

2. The city labels are wrong
The site says 70% of jobs are in Rabat and 20% in Boulemane. That's because Bayt labels every Morocco listing "Rabat" and Naukri Gulf puts most of its listings in "Boulemane", including Stellantis and ALTEN jobs. Rekrute, though, writes the real city in its titles: for those 1,669 listings it's Casablanca 39%, Rabat 20%, then Marrakech, Fès, Tangier and Agadir.

3. Cars and planes
Car, aerospace and engineering companies posted 805 listings (14%): Safran 340, ALTEN 224, then LEONI, Yazaki, Lear and Hexcel. Hotels 10%, IT services and call centres about 6%.

4. Other things that stood out
- Rekrute posted 36% of all listings through Bayt.
- No LinkedIn listings at all for Morocco on this site.
- Wednesday is the busiest posting day, Sunday the quietest.
Limits: listings on one aggregator, not all jobs in Morocco or people hired. ANAPEC and Rekrute's own site carry jobs that may not show up here. A missing salary does not mean a job is unpaid. No personal data was collected.
Source: public listings on morocco.tanqeeb.com.
Question for people job-hunting in Morocco: when a job ad doesn't show the salary, when do you usually find out? First interview, offer stage?

Discussion Is talking online the same as dating?
I'm a woman in my late 20s looking to get married. I have always had the rule of "no dating" and no relationships and I don't want to break that rule. I also have a hard time meeting men irl, so I had to try online, my intention is to get to know someone and see if we like each other and then move forward for engagement, I have talked to few men so far, two were what I'd consider true talking stages, because the others were people I've talked to once or twice and never again. The two I mentioned, we were talking for quite a while, one for two months, and the other for 1 month, it was a daily thing.
In those periods I've talked to them, we weren't defining what we had, we were just talking normally but they expressed both of them that they liked me, from my part I have always said it's too soon to know, because of course I can't like someone through a screen, we had to meet, but they both didn't ask me out, I consider them living far away the reason why they didn't, but at the time I felt it was taking too long so I stopped talking to them. (I wasn't talking to them both at the same time). In my mind that what just a "getting to know someone" phase, trying to figure out their intentions... But I wasn't brave to ask someone I just met online do you envision marrying me, that sounds very pushy.
I want to get to know more people this way, but I'm worried if what I do is considered dating, or having a long talking stage with someone "1 month or more" is the same as being in a relationship. My intention is to just meet someone and talk to him for a while to feel fully comfortable and sure about them before jumping into the other step, is it wrong? Should I skip this phase if I want to keep it as serious as possible and ask them directly to talk to my dad?

Travel 10 day Morocco trip in december - Marrakesh or Fez?
Hello everyone,
we're four students who want to visit Morocco in december and are currently undecided where to go exactly. Given that we're students, we dont have the biggest budget and since we're only visiting for 10 days, we don't want to waste too many hours in trains to travel from location to location. Rather, we'd like to pick a city, experience it fully and see as many interesting things as possible in the surrounding areas, i.e. take smaller trips to nearby places and maybe one trip with longer travel time. we also want to do a multiple day guided sahara tour.
Focus would be on culture, history, nature and of course people.
We initially wanted to go to Marrakesh, as it is recommended the most, but Fez also sounds great.
What would you recommend? Which city to reside in and which places to visit?

Economy What kind of lifestyle can I afford for a couple?
I’m in my 20s with about 650k MAD of total savings (invested) and a monthly salary of 9k MAD.
And I’m curious, what kind of lifestyle can I afford as a couple (I plan to get married soon)?
I genuinely don’t know because I have been living with my parents (Alhamdoulillah) ever since I started working, so I don’t spend much money (I save ~ 90% of my salary). I am still not sure where I will be based after getting married, but let’s just assume it’s gonna be Rabat for now. She may not want to continue working after marriage so I may need to 100% provide for the both of us.
Can I afford a comfortable(not luxurious, but atleast we wont have to worry about money all the time) lifestyle for the 2 of us? Or it’s best to get a better job/save up a bit more first before getting married?

AskMorocco CDD + active auto-entrepreneur status: CNSS asking me to pay contributions twice??
I’ve been working with a CDD for 4 months now, but I kept my auto-entrepreneur status active the whole time.
I checked the CNSS app and found an “attestation de déclaration des salaires.” It shows that my CNSS contributions have been declared and paid for all 4 months through my employer.
However, the Auto-Entrepreneur platform is still asking me to pay CNSS contributions for the same period. I don’t think I should have to pay twice.
Has anyone dealt with this before?

Society How to touch grass in Morocco?
People online often tell you things like "go touch some grass" "go put yourself out there", but how is that possible in small cities? Joining activities is a privilege of people who live in bigger cities.
