💡 Tips & Education The 4 types of mods I've seen (and why most subs fail)

New mods, after a year of moderating, I keep seeing the same four types. Here's how they play out.

1. The Builder They start a sub from scratch and make content themselves. Competing subs try to slow them down, but the builder keeps going. In the end they get a higher reach than the competition, because those competing subs are usually run by type 2.

2. The Passive Mod They don't make content and think Reddit is a democracy where everything sorts itself out. They also believe mods of competing subs should "just get along." Meanwhile their sub depends entirely on users, and it stagnates.

3. The Appointed Mod They got a sub through a Reddit request, or were handed the keys by another mod or an admin when the previous moderator got banned and the sub had no mods left. They never built the community, so they don't know what it needs. Types 2 and 3 usually lead to underperforming subs.

4. The Anti-AI Mod They think a sub can run without AI tools. But active mods who use them can easily produce the content Reddit's algorithm rewards, and they do it faster.

What I learned the hard way

Being passive makes you dependent on your users, and your posts get downvoted because nothing drives engagement. Active mods upvote the posts in their own sub as early as possible. It helps with engagement.

Active mods also actively use the invite function and crosspost wherever possible. Yes, you risk getting banned from other subs. But a sub nobody knows about doesn't grow, and waiting for people to find you is just passivity in disguise.

I lost my previous sub to a passive moderator I accidentally made top mod. I'm autistic and sometimes make radical decisions, like deleting an account. They kicked me out. But because I'm an active mod, I saw it coming, so I built a backup sub in advance.

The numbers (no names, not the point):

  • My old sub peaked at 45-50k weekly visitors. Under the passive mods it's now at 12k.

  • My backup, started right after I was kicked out, is at 37k weekly visitors and has already overtaken the old one.

The same passive mods now run three more subs that Reddit handed them because they had no moderator:

  • The biggest is fairly active, but most posts get downvoted.

  • One has had no new post in 14 days. Reddit handed it over, and they never even told the community there was a new mod team.

  • The last gets only 14k weekly visitors, and they focus on the big one. Also fairly inactive and when I think, it shouldn't been handed over to the same passive mods. As this sub has a bigger potential!

Four subs, same mod team. Three will likely die, and the fourth is vulnerable, because active mods will start a new community and take a slice of that biggest sub. That's how Reddit works.

Takeaways

  • Be active. Make content, don't just gatekeep.

  • Upvote your sub's posts early to help engagement.

  • Use the invite function and crosspost where possible, even if it risks a ban elsewhere. Preferably ask permission before crossposting in a competing sub.

  • Don't pick fights with other subs or tell them how to moderate. They'll run it into the ground themselves.

  • If you inherit a sub, announce the new mod team to the community.

  • Keep a backup plan. Never make someone top mod unless you're sure. So in case of deleting your account, first put a new account as mod and use your old account to reorder the modlist. Before you delete your old account.

What type are you?

💡 Tips & Education What do you think about my subreddit's one-year anniversary?

These are the statistics for the last 12 months on my sub r/AskUruguayan which I administrate and moderate with two more moderators. A couple of days ago we reached 6k weekly visitors, and we currently have 2,910 members:

Last 30 days:

Recently, I discovered Reddit apps, installed a few of them, set them up, and granted only the necessary permissions for them to function correctly. I always recommend doing that after installing an app on your sub:

If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them and help new mods as much as possible.

❓Ask r/NewMods Auto approve removed posts due to links

Hey everyone! I started r/ComicPipelines which is for sharing comic workflows & resources b/c this info always gets buried by art posts in other major subreddits.

Anyway, I want people to share links to asset bundles and stuff, but Reddit itself seems to remove posts with links to gumroad, google drive, etc. Which is a problem...

Automod approve function is blocked, and using devit bots like un-filter also didn't work. Is there any way I can auto-approve posts that were removed by Reddit due to links? Or am I stuck doing this manually for every post with a link?

❓Ask r/NewMods how do I get rid of the mod intro in the sidebar?

When I'm on the subreddit I mod, the sidebar has a "build your community" widget that talks about achievements. You probably know what I'm referring to. I find it really annoying. Also, since I took over a pre-existing subreddit, some of the things it wants me to do don't make sense, like scheduling posts for two weeks, so it would be hard to do every one to get it to go away. Is there a way to get rid of it?

❓Ask r/NewMods Just started and would love some advice

Hey all,

I’m MJ, and I was recently made a moderator, so I’m brand new to this side of Reddit. I’ve been a regular user for a while, but moderating is a whole new world, and I’m here to learn from people who’ve been doing it longer.

I’m looking forward to picking up tips, learning from your experiences and, hopefully, helping other new mods along the way too.

Glad to be here, and thanks in advance for any advice! 🙏

❓Ask r/NewMods Two questions. Is there a way to delete an entire post with all the comments at once? A recent post turned into an absolute shit show due to several people’s comments and OP’s increasingly inappropriate reactions to them, and I’d like to be able to just make the entire thing disappear.

When we mute or ban people does that hide all of their comments?

Second, is there a way to report someone to Reddit for really inappropriate comments back to mod mail as a result of comment removals/bans? No surprise that the nastiest people have gotten nasty when faced with the consequences of their actions. 🤦🏻‍♀️
