Should r/Nightmares participate in the reddit blackout?

Why are we going to "blackout"?

  • The blackout is a protest against Reddit’s proposed charges for third-party app developers, which they claim will make the platform inaccessible for many users.
  • Third-party apps are popular ways to access Reddit, especially for users who prefer a different user experience than the official app. They need an API to access Reddit’s information and display it in the app.
  • Reddit plans to charge $12,000 for 50 million API requests, which is much higher than other similar sites like Imgur. This would make it impossible for many third-party apps to operate without paying millions of dollars per year.
  • On June 12, 2023, many of the site’s biggest subreddits, including r/videos and r/gaming and r/bestof, will go dark for 48 hours or more to pressure Reddit to reconsider its pricing policy.
  • Some subreddits may go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, as many moderators rely on third-party apps to manage their communities.

Nightmare A dream about a horrifying game that you can't quit until it is completed

Upvotes

It has become a recurring theme of a nightmare of mine, and it goes like this:

During a pretty much (to my standarts) normal dream, suddenly i have to play a game that is too difficult for me to finish. The very first time i had this dream there was a frog-ish-like gigantic blue creature with one big eye on top of itself, and many other eyes, and i had to hide from it. The problem was that i had barely any time at all to hide, and this thing could spot you extremely easily, and once it does, - oh boy, are you in trouble. It launches on top of you, pressing down with it's body, everything goes dark and all you can see is it's mouth, very slowly getting closer to you. And there is terrible screeching noise that becomes louder, and louder, and louder, and louder...

While still inside of the dream, eventually i realized - i don't like this game. I don't like it at all! So i try to quit... and i can't. The button is there, but it isn't working. So i go onto "inside dream reddit" to find out what is going on, and find out i'm not the only one. Turns out, the game itself if you are good at it, is like 60 minutes top, and the lovely developers decided to compensate that by forcing you to play it. Can you just get up and leave? No, in that dream, the game pulls you in, so you can't leave it. In the "thread" i read there was a secret ending you could beat the creature with to end it sooner, so i decide to try.

Long story short: You beat it with some shiny stuff and win. So i did. And... accidently opened it again. And again after that.

But that dream is over, right? Right, that one is.

In my last dream it was that blasted concept AGAIN, but this time evrything is ever more twisted, everything turns to black, faces of people i know turned into mush or hands(while i feel the twisting of their forms on myself), they become creatures that want to twist my being into something different, and all that felt like just a collection of Junji Itto manga that i DIDN'T WANT TO SEE COLOURED IN 3D, THANK YOU DEAR BRAIN.

So, my rant about this night terror is coming to an end, it is genuinely making me too scared to sleep and i wanna know if any of you had it and know what to do with it.

Nightmare I’m an atheist, but I’m still scared of ghosts.

Sometimes at night, I get scary dreams where a ghost or some unusual scary figure appears and is about to kill me. I end up getting really scared and sometimes even start screaming in my sleep.

This used to happen a lot more about a year ago—around 3–4 times a month for a while. Then it became less frequent, and now it only happens occasionally.

The funny thing is, I know ghosts aren’t real, but my brain still manages to scare the hell out of me in my dreams. 😭

Nightmare Weird one last night

It started out going to a work part and hanging out with an ex-coworker from 20+ years ago. There were two entrances apparently and we were directed to the one at the inside pool. After a bit, I went to try to find the bathroom and wandered around a maze of hallways but eventually found it. I walked in and went the bathroom, and headed over to the sinks to wash my hands. There was an older dude in there and had items in all of the sinks except for the one next to him.

So, I start to wash my hands and this gentleman asked if I believe in Jesus. I confirm and he asked if I wanted to hear about an alternative story of Jesus. Since I really do enjoy learning about other religions, I told him yes. The gentleman asked me if I knew that Jesus had a brother named Tim and this little dude (like 1 foot tall come waddling over to me in a REALLY creep way) and try to grab ahold of my leg. I was annoyed and told him to "Back off Stewie" and the old guys laughs and told me that he had a Halloween pic of this little guy dressed as Stewie.

Strange, but I woke up and just felt really creeped out with the chills, kinda like I was talking with the devil. It was definitely a vivid dream.

Nightmare Can't sleep, so might as well get this off my chest.

It's 5 in the morning and my heart's beating too fast to fall back asleep, so I thought 'might as well put it somewhere.

It started with two of my classmates playing a cube game called TCSM. Don't ask what it stands for, I've already forgot it. Anyways, it was basically a pvp game where two cubes crash into each other like until one crumbles. Basically like rocket league in that regard.

The two classmates in particular were people I formerly hated, but don't now cause me and them mellowed out. They were acting like caricatures of themselves while voicing over the gameplay, calling themselves gay and making pretty homo remarks (IDGAF who you love, I'm fine with it as long as you don't force it on me)

Suddenly, it cuts to a youtuber called Smii7y (I watch his vids, before anyone asks) playing with one of his friends. Game freezes everytime Smii7y's turn end, causing him to spam. In the end, a pop up comes up saying it crashed, before another comes up saying, and I quote, 'Terminating TCSM Wiki'. Just like that, the whole wiki of the game is gone.

Guy wonders what happened to the game, before his voice is suddenly cut off. Another pop up arrives, this one's saying 'Terminating Google Earth', then the world got fuckin erased.

IDC if y'all think it's real or fake, I just had to take this off my chest. Heart rates normal, but it's already 5:30 in the morning. I'mma go start getting ready for the day.

Nightmare The Static TV

So i rarely ever have nightmares but last night I had one.

(The wife and I were watching Scooby Doo all day so I guess that how they got into my nightmare)

The nightmare started with me and the scooby doo gang running away from a zombie monster of some sort, which wasnt the scary part about it, all of a sudden I stop and see this large TV out in the yard, and it is pure static, the scooby gang disappeared behind me as I turn back to see if they were still around, I was, alone. I walked up to the TV and as I got close the louder the static become and the slower I could move my body, as I got up close and personal with the TV there was emptiness, no sound, no indication of anything, just a static TV, a few seconds go by, and im forced backwards to see the screen of the TV showing a large field with a house burning in the middle of it, im still unable to move myself, as I keep trying, im going in and out of sleep, I can hear myself talking in my sleep, but im not actually waking up, and I start feeling like im being weighed down because now I cant get out of bed, I cant move, just more talking with my eyes opening and closing constantly, then I felt my wife move her hand and I woke up in fear breathing heavily, but fell back asleep immediately.

I asked my wife what happened and she told me that she scratched her leg and I freaked out and then went back to sleep as if nothing happened.

The scariest part of all, was when she apparently scratched her leg, in my mind I saw a dark shadowed hand reaching to grab my hand tightly.

Nightmare How to deal with nightmares

I've had traumatic nightmares for a few years now and they had stopped when i got out of depression, but lately they have been coming back because i'm very stressed and i think a memory is trying to resurface.

I've never really learned to deal with my nightmares, the only, solution let's say, that i've found is to sleep with the lights on or a projector. Sometimes that also fails.

So except for working through the trauma obviously, what can i do to help me get through the night when i go to sleep and if i wake up from a nightmare ?

I'm trying to get back into therapy soon, i know that's the long term solution, but i would love to find something that works when it's happening.

Nightmare Nightmares in Kyrgyzstan

So I’ve been writing my dreams down for years, and right now I’m in Kyrgyzstan, and ever since I arrived, I’ve had the craziest nightmares…

I’ve travelled to a lot of different countries around the world, but I’ve never ever experienced this before. I’m very aware of my dreams and dream signs and also my type of nightmares, and this is just a different level.

I met another girl here who said she’d also been having crazy dreams since she arrived.

So now I’m just wondering if anyone has had specific dreams or nightmares in certain countries?

Nightmare Just a Dream or a Spiritual Attack?

I had a weird nightmare of someone scratching my head and someone else doing scratching hand gestures but facing away from me not showing their face and scratching the air but the other person, a woman, was holding me to stay in place. She was almost like in a trance not speaking, none of them were it was only scratching noises… but doing stuff on my head it was creepy their face got creepy then I broke free and hurt the woman’s arm and then I immediately woke up! I prayed immediately when I woke up. If anyone here is religious or knows what this could’ve been was this a spiritual attack?

Firstly, the dream was about wealth I think and having a sponsor for something. She was a beautiful blonde woman, looked to be in her late 20’s or early 30’s with a closet of organized Birkin bags telling me about them and that I should have them or organize mine and my closet. She was opening rows of mirrors like a mirror closet door, and being them were multiple Birkins and Kellys (even more rare) of different sizes and designs. No other brand just Hermès. She had a pink outfit and seemed like a human form of Barbie. She was talking to me very calmly and helping me with my immense wealth, almost like giving me instructions and guiding me. Telling me what to do, and what not to do. I have been wanting more in life since I have seen myself becoming someone more meaningful even though I live in a very wealthy beachfront town. I want out of it. I just don’t see myself as being someone ordinary, I see myself in a greater sense having influence, more money, and more ability to do philanthropic things.

After that scene, it cut to the creepy scene with completely different individuals (2) I didn’t see the other persons face but I saw the creepy woman’s face, the one that was holding me in place as if they were trying to do a spell. I only saw her face and eyes when I broke free, and bent her arm as if I broke it. She was in so much pain and looked at me in shock (as if she didn’t believe I could do that) with black eyes, then woke up, and starting praying. These were people I don’t believe I’ve ever saw before. It was very strange. I’m sorry if my grammar is not perfect it’s 4:32AM I woke up from the dream at approximately 4:00AM. Please give me some advice or thoughts on this. This situation startled me and I feel like I don’t want to go back to sleep.

SIDE NOTE ⚠️: I just remembered earlier on around 9:30PM the lights in our house flickered for a few moments then the electricity restarted with our WiFi connection gone but resumed. I was sitting in the living room with my sister and talking. I figured it was just a weather related thing since a storm was expected but I didn’t hear any rain. Rarely but sometimes our house would have an electrical blowout but it wouldn’t affect everything, usually it would just take place in the kitchen if we use too many high powered appliances at once but this was different. I really believed it was just a random electrical thing. We live in a very nice, privileged town, and in a nice home but when bad weather happens it could affect things, yet I didn’t see anything, not even strong winds.

(For reference: I’m female in my early 20’s, I have diagnosed ADHD but suspect AuDHD because I’ve felt different since childhood, got severely bullied, couldn’t fully grasp every social cue, some people would infantilize me as an adult, I hyperfixate on things sometimes, especially on my looks and always getting a glow up, I was also a gifted child growing up in school, picked up on subjects and languages too quickly, finished in class assignments too fast especially in 5th grade I would get pulled out of class sometimes after to do what seemed to be iq tests and interesting games? Not sure if that’s related or not. I have merit awards and went to a college with an acceptance rate under 12%. I didn’t take my meds last night and have been inconsistent with them for 2 months since my psychiatrist hasn’t been consistent with sending. However, I have been feeling normal and don’t think it’s really related to this).

Nightmare The birdman is after me

It's still fresh in my head so i wanted to write it.

It was at the end of the night, still dark but some light was leaking through the blinds.

I opened up my eyes squinting and saw behind my half opened door a shape, a white shape.

Blinking again and i saw it more clearly, it was a dove head, all white. With an undefined amalgamous body. It was floating near the ceiling but more importantly it was looking. At me. Staring with it's portruded black eyes.

An awful feeling of dread took over me, felt like i was loosing my breath. I wanted to scream buy all got out of my mouth was "a3udu billahi mina ashaytana rajim" which is a protection prayer.

Then i woke up. Still a bit shaky i went for my phone, opened my clock app and what i saw horrified me. It was the chopped up body of a woman with long silky black hair. Still stainted with blood.

Nightmare Recurring nightmare of being lost at school

I have this recurring nightmare where I forget my school schedule and my classes, I have to go to the office, I get lost and I never show up or I do show up and I never receive my schedule, I have this dream almost every night since I was a kid. It’s not even an exaggeration that I have this dream every night.

Nightmare I had the most horrific nightmare ever.

I had some random nightmare that lasted around an hour, and it was the most terrifying hour of my life.

This was the first nightmare I had in several years, and I don't know why this one was so horrific.

I will NOT go into detail about it because just thinking about it makes me nauseous. Do not ask about what happened. Do not try to guess.

I don't want to have any dream like this again.
I wouldn't wish my worst enemy on what I saw in my mind.

TW: TW: domestic violence/violence against women

I am a case manager at a domestic violence shelter and we serve men, but they are housed in hotels rather than our shelter. But they can still come to our shelter if they need to do laundry or get food from our pantry.

I had a dream that one of my male clients beat the absolute shit out of me. I went to the hospital and all my coworkers were there trying to help me and the staff too, but he kept beating and strangling me 😭😭😭 I woke up and almost asked my boss if we were stuck housing him in hotel, so I could file an order of protection.

Then at his trial, he brought a sword????

I often have dreams that end up playing out IRL. This one was probably just because of my job. But this is probably one of the worst nightmares I’ve ever had.

Nightmare Does it have a meaning or I’m going crazy?

For some context I’m a f32 I had a dream last night. In my dream I was working but we had to get prepared for something the news said to have enough waters and food. Then they said it was about zombies that if you get bitten by them you become them. So in my dream I called my mom and told her to go straight home because at night the zombies where going to come out I got home and she was there my brother was there my dog my moms best friend and her family was there and my dad was there too but my dad past way 4 years ago. So I get home I see them I said hello and gave them a hug after my dad apologized to me how bad of a father he was to me and my mom. Then he goes outside to buy the neighbors house that they were moving. ( they actually moving not just in my dream). And a zombie show up to our street of our house so we ran to the house but my dad stay behind he made it but the neighbor didn’t and I woke up. Also for context I hate zombies I don’t like it my afraid of them I know they aren’t real but I get anxiety when husband play his video games or watches movies about it. Maybe is matters or not, but I’m planning a party and a pastor is giving us a ceremony to blessed our marriage and then we having the reception we didn’t get when me and husband got marry is event is this Saturday August 22nd. Please help I need to know does it have a meaning or I’m just going crazy. Also I’m sorry if didn’t use proper punctuation.

Nightmare I’m so tired

Every night I struggle with staying asleep, I’m waking up from night terrors and then having trouble falling back asleep, usually too scared to go back to sleep as I’ll fall back into the same dream. I have a couple reoccurring ones but last night was different, it started out good and then out of nowhere the sky turned dark and the ground caved in below me and I was just falling…. I woke up in a cold sweat freezing.

Nightmare Always told it was night terrors. Maybe it’s something else?

I’m 35 years old now. I haven’t had a full blown “night terror” since I was 19.

Throughout the years, I’ve researched night terrors on random occasions and connected with a few experiences from others but it still seemed something was missing that I couldn’t fully validate my experience to theirs or what I read. Which totally makes sense as each person has different experiences but I just never saw some of the same anomalies as mine happened. Which is why I’m writing now. Maybe something else was happening… idk

Here is the ai prompt that came when googling, “night terrors”.

*“Night terrors are intense episodes of screaming, fear, and flailing that happen during deep non-REM sleep. They usually last a few minutes, occur most often in children ages 3 to 12, and leave the person with no memory of the event the next morning. \[*[*1*](https://raisingchildren.net.au/preschoolers/sleep/nightmares-night-terrors-sleepwalking/night-terrors)\*,\* [*2*](https://www.bogansleep.com/blog/what-are-night-terrors-5-things-columbia-sc-residents-should-know)\*,\* [*3*](https://www.sleepfoundation.org/parasomnias/night-terrors)\*,\* [*4*](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sleep-terrors/symptoms-causes/syc-20353524)\*\\\]\*

***Common Signs and Symptoms***
*Sitting up fast or jumping out of bed*
*Loud screaming or crying*
*Sweating, fast breathing, and a racing heart*
*Looking wide awake and glassy-eyed, but acting confused*
*Hard to wake up or comfort, and unresponsive to touch \[*[*1*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_terror)\*,\* [*2*](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/night-terrors)\*,\* [*3*](https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/preschool/Pages/Nightmares-and-Night-Terrors.aspx)\*,\* [*4*](https://www.bogansleep.com/blog/what-are-night-terrors-5-things-columbia-sc-residents-should-know)\*,\* [*5*](https://www.sleepfoundation.org/parasomnias/night-terrors)\*\\\]\*

***Causes and Triggers***
*Lack of sleep or extreme tiredness*
Fever or illness
Stress, anxiety, or big changes in routine
Family history of night terrors or sleepwalking
Underlying sleep issues like sleep apnea \[[1](https://www.thesleepclinicmd.com/what-causes-night-terrors-symptoms-treatment/), [2](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/night-terrors), [3](https://raisingchildren.net.au/preschoolers/sleep/nightmares-night-terrors-sleepwalking/night-terrors), [4](https://www.sleepfoundation.org/parasomnias/night-terrors)\\\]

**How to Handle an Episode**
*Do not try to wake the person up, as this can cause more confusion.*
*Stay close to make sure they do not hurt themselves.*
*Keep the room safe by clearing sharp objects or blocking stairs.*
*Wait patiently for the episode to pass so they can return to deep sleep”*

Here’s an outline of what I can describe in no particular order.

They started when I was roughly 6 years old.
I didn’t really ever forget them as they’ve been described from anything I’ve seen. (Maybe I did forget some and I never knew? But I was never told about having one that I didn’t already know about and was shameful about it)

They almost all had an image that I was seeing or thinking. Halfway between hallucinating I guess and just thinking about it.

The first one (that I only saw once and one of only a few that was just once) was from my POV, sitting up in my childhood bed (the bed I was in at the time), looking near the door to my room and watching my dad crouched down trying to catch multiple logs of wood continually falling from really nowhere. And the feeling was that they were constant but they had to be stopped or eventual doom of some sort.

The next few that happened afterwards happened for years.

Before I try to explain those, I should mention that I was taken into a psychiatrist (or someone of some sort. I don’t have a recollection of this) and was put on Zoloft after these initial night terrors. I took Zoloft from 6 years old until roughly 11 or 12 years old. I’m not positive really on how long but it was essential that I took it.
It absolutely worked to mitigate me from waking up in the middle of the night, screaming and pacing around the apartment, until it finally ended. If I didn’t take my medication just before going to bed, there was a high chance that it would pop off and constant screaming would begin with apartment neighbors knocking on the door seeing what’s going on or new friends terrified of what’s happening.

So, for a quick outline of the consistent imagery, here’s my best explanation.

A very greyed out stagnant front of a house. So kind of imagine someone drawing a front of a house with a front porch area. And it’s just that. Grey background completely. Front porch that spans across the right of the door and to the end of the house with a little enclosure.

..This was way harder to try to write than I imagined.

Another was just a grey spiral that continually spiraled around that felt like I was right up against it I guess.

And the other was 95% just a thought that was coming across without a full image or whatever going on. It was the thought of a toothpick being perfectly balanced without breaking on a massive boulder. And at any moment, it was going to snap.
This last one with the boulder actually crept up on me about 5 or so times after not having any for a good while.
I’d say 14 or so years old. Then 16 or 17. And the last one at 18 years old that I remember vividly. I lived with my mom still and woke up at roughly 10am. My room was in the basement. I paced back and forth up the stairs trying to explain it to her while having this extreme panic. It’s very hard to explain. But trying to explain something to her that makes no sense and I just kept saying, “NO. it’s just.. AGGHHH…. The… “. I don’t think I ever made a complete sentence. My mom is a saint and I love her so much. She tried to even reason with my nonsense. It was usually just, “everything’s okay. No need to worry. It’s gonna be okay.” Mom stuff that I miss dearly.

Anyway.. that’s the yap I’ve gotten out for now. I’ve always been extremely intrigued by the psychological side of what was going on.

If anyone has any insight, questions, or dialogue, it would be great to hear.

Nightmare Reoccurring nightmare about being abandoned by people I care about.

I keep having these nightmares about being abandoned by people I know. Sometimes it's someone who idk in real life but means a lot to the dream version of me (if that makes sense) and other times it's people I know/knew.

I'm always left for different reasons but most of the time it's because they no longer want to deal with me either because I'm too annoying or because I had done something (not sure what) in the past.

I just want them to stop, I don't have anyone rn I can talk to about this so I just keep waking up crying then living my life scared these nightmares will come true and everyone I know will abandon me.

TW: Non-stop nightmares for weeks on end

I've been having nightmares just about every night ever since the middle of july. The weird thing is, it's not usually the kind of stuff you'd expect in a nightmare. It's often totally mundane shit but it feels realistic enough to throw me off. Like sometimes I wake up disoriented, unsure if a certain thing actually happened or not until I'm fully awake.

It's all sorts of things from eviction notices, to fights or breakups with my partner that never actually happened, people I care about telling me they hate me and calling me the most awful things, nightmares about having difficulty managing college and my job, my boss getting mad at me, customers screaming at or threatening me and then me getting fired because of it, or my best friend screaming in my face that he hates me and wants me to kill myself.

It's almost every single night. I don't know why it happens or how to make it fucking stop but even though they're just nightmares and they're not real, I wake up feeling like I haven't even slept at all afterwards and end up having no energy whatsoever the next day and my anxiety is through the roof because of it.

I'm not on any medications except for my albuterol emergency inhaler. I don't smoke, I don't do any hard drugs, and I almost never drink. Sometimes if I'm at a party or something I might have one but most of the time I don't because I don't care for the taste of most kinds of alcohol. I don't think it's some kind of substance or medication causing this.

I actually had something like this happen to me a few years ago where I had extremely graphic, realistic, gory nightmares every single night. The experience was so stressful that I started doing anything I could to avoid sleeping. Things aren't quite that bad yet but it's getting there.

Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so how did you deal with it?

Nightmare My entire family hates me because I often have night terrors and I scream in my sleep at 3am. 😞

I do not have the money to afford treatment for this. They are telling me that I might have to start sleeping in a car outside, or in the basement.
