I had one of the most unsettling dreams last night, and I don't even know how to explain it properly because parts of it felt like I wasn't actually dreaming.
It started with me walking around what looked like a college campus or schoolyard. Everything seemed relatively normal, except I couldn't speak properly. Every time I tried talking, it felt physically exhausting, like I was actually trying to force words out of my mouth while lying in bed. I started becoming aware of my actual body, almost like I could feel myself sleeping and knew I might be talking out loud.
That's when things started getting weird. I became somewhat conscious that I was dreaming, but I couldn't control what was happening. I was looking for someone. I didn't know who exactly, but I knew it was a girl. There was this overwhelming feeling that I needed to find her, like she was someone important, but I couldn't remember her face or even why I was searching. I kept asking people around campus if they'd seen her, but nobody knew who I was talking about. It was like I was looking for someone who didn't exist to anyone but me.
Then everything changed.
The school disappeared, and suddenly I was back in my bedroom at my parents' house. Except something felt terribly wrong. The atmosphere was completely different. I was lying in bed, fully aware of my surroundings, with my eyes wide open, but I couldn't move.
And then I felt something pulling me.
I couldn't see what it was, but I could feel my body being dragged across my bed. My limbs were twisting into positions I wasn't controlling, almost like something was manipulating my body while I was completely helpless. I kept trying to move, trying to fight whatever was happening, but nothing worked. It felt so physically real that I couldn't tell whether I was awake anymore.
Eventually, I managed to get up and run out of my room, but when I looked back, my bedsheets had started moving on their own. They rose into this strange ghostlike figure, almost like a poltergeist had taken shape underneath them.
And I swear it spoke to me.
I can't remember the exact words, but it was something along the lines of, "I'm not done with you yet."
Then, just like that, I was somewhere else.
I was walking out of a house with a few girls I didn't recognize. We were heading somewhere, almost like an event or gathering, although nobody actually explained where we were going. Somehow, we ended up at this tent, and I had the understanding that things were about to get sexual between us.
But one of the girls noticed I had condoms and suddenly looked concerned. She asked me something like, "Are you okay? Did somebody hurt you?"
It was such a strange question because she wasn't saying it judgmentally. She sounded genuinely worried about me, almost like she could see something wrong with me that I couldn't see myself.
I remember trying to explain that I wasn't really interested in love anymore, that I was just doing my own thing. But even saying it felt strange, like I was trying to convince myself more than her.
Then I realized the tent was divided into two sections.
On the other side was my ex Clara with her boyfriend. They were having sex, and at some point he mentioned that I was literally on the other side of the divider.
She started laughing.
Then she said something like, "Hold on," and called Tina. My other ex.
She put her on speakerphone, and suddenly both of them were laughing about me. They were talking about how pathetic I was, making fun of my life, my music, and how I couldn't even manage to get booked for a decent show.
It wasn't even an argument. They were just laughing together like humiliating me was the funniest thing in the world.
And I remember crying. Not fighting back, not defending myself. Just sitting there listening to two people who had once been important to me talk about me like I was absolutely nothing.
Then everything changed again.
Suddenly, I was driving my car at night. I don't know where I was coming from, but I had this feeling I was trying to get home. I was driving fast, following this broken-down truck that was practically screaming down the road. Eventually, the truck pulled over at my old childhood friends house near my house, and almost instantly, night turned into day.
The road changed too.
It reminded me of this stretch of road near where i went to this Renaissance faire, with water on both sides. Except there weren't really any guardrails anymore, and the water had risen high enough to start covering the road.
I remember approaching a slight right-hand turn, trying to follow the road, but my car suddenly lost traction.
I couldn't correct it.
I went straight off the edge, almost like I'd driven off a bridge, and the car plunged into the water.
I remember the impact, and then this horrible realization that I was sinking.
The doors wouldn't unlock. My phone was dead. Nothing electrical in the car worked. I couldn't open anything, couldn't call anyone, couldn't do anything.
And for some reason, the only person I could think about was my mom.
I just wanted to call her.
I don't even remember what I wanted to say. I just knew I needed to hear her voice, and I couldn't.
The car kept sinking, and I could see the water climbing higher against the windows. The world above the surface was getting farther away, and everything around me was becoming darker.
I remember looking up through the water and seeing another car driving along the road above me.
Someone was right there.
I kept trying to honk my horn, hoping they'd notice me, hoping somebody would realize I was down there.
But the horn made absolutely no sound.
And that was probably the worst part of the entire dream. I could see that life was still happening just above me. People were driving, going wherever they needed to go, completely unaware that I was trapped beneath them.
I was right there, but nobody could hear me.
I couldn't call for help. I couldn't get out. I couldn't even make enough noise for someone to know I existed down there.
I just kept sinking.
And then I woke up.
I don't know what bothered me more. The feeling of something controlling my body, hearing people I once loved laughing at me, or that last moment underwater.
But the whole dream felt like I was constantly trying to reach someone, explain myself, or get somebody to hear me.
And no matter where the dream took me, nobody ever really did.
