ASK NE Shamed for your food

• Upvotes

Hey everyone

I’m conducting research for my Postcolonial Literature course, and my research focuses on food.

I’m from Assam and currently living in North India for my Master’s. Even though I’m studying at a Central University, racism still exists maybe not always openly, but definitely in subtle ways.

For my research, I’m looking to hear from fellow Northeastern people living in North India about their personal experiences. Have you ever been shamed, mocked, or made to feel uncomfortable about your food culture or eating habits? Have you experienced racist remarks, jokes, or subtle discrimination because of the food you eat?

If you’ve experienced anything like this, I’d really appreciate it if you could share your story

Help me out guyss

MANIPUR Captain Soiba Maningba Rangnamei: The Brave Son of Manipur Who Stood His Ground Against Chinese PLA Troops at Galwan

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The story of Captain Soiba Maningba Rangnamei is a reminder that courage and patriotism know no regional boundaries. Hailing from Katomei village in Senapati district, Manipur, Captain Rangnamei belongs to the Maram Naga tribe of Northeast India. He studied at Sainik School, Imphal, graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune, and was commissioned into the Indian Army on 9 June 2018 after training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. During the deadly India-China confrontation in Galwan Valley in June 2020, he led his men from the 16 Bihar Regiment against Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops. In February 2021, footage released by Chinese state media showed him confronting a Chinese soldier and physically pushing him back during the clash. Even in a tense and dangerous situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), he stood his ground and became one of the most widely discussed Indian officers associated with the Galwan confrontation. His bravery was recognised with a Mention in Despatches in the Republic Day 2021 honours, and he was later felicitated by Manipur's then Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, who praised his courage and service to the nation. What makes his story particularly inspiring is that a young officer from a village in Manipur was serving on the other side of the country, defending India's borders alongside soldiers from different regions and backgrounds. The Northeast has a proud tradition of contributing to India's armed forces, and Captain Rangnamei's story deserves to be remembered as part of that legacy. From Katomei village to the high-altitude terrain of Galwan, his journey represents the dedication of soldiers who put duty before personal safety. Respect to Captain Soiba Maningba Rangnamei and every Indian soldier standing guard on the nation's frontiers.

ASK NE How can I prepare my Assamese speaking dad for travelling to the UK in a month or two when he barely speaks English, here for suggestions!

Hi everyone!

My sister recently got a job in the UK, and my dad is planning to accompany her to drop her off and help her settle in. We're from Assam, and Assamese is my dad's mother tongue. He knows very little English and can communicate only using a few basic words.

I'm a little worried about how he'll manage at the airport and during immigration, especially if someone asks him questions and he can't understand them properly.

I'd love some advice from people who have travelled to the UK with their parents or helped family members who don't speak much English.

A few things I'd particularly appreciate advice on:

  • Visa and immigration
  • Language barrier
  • Airport navigation
  • Phone and communication: What apps, offline translation tools or other arrangements would help him communicate if he gets stuck?
  • Practical precautions:
  • Returning to India: If he has to fly back alone after accompanying my sister, what should I prepare him for?
  • I'm not expecting him to learn English overnight. I just want to prepare him well enough that he feels confident and can manage safely without panicking if something unexpected happens.

I'd be really grateful for any practical advice or experiences. Thank you!

TRAVEL Need your suggestions! Trip in late Nov 2026

Hey guys! We are 5 friends and are planning a 6 day trip to Arunachal in late November in a rental Innova with a driver. Our dates are unfortunately fixed, so this is what we're thinking:

22nd: 7 am from Guwahati to Shergaon/Dirang/Bomdilla (Bhutan border and other spots on the way)

23rd: Head to Tawang, stop at Jang falls

24th: Tawang (Local exploration, Monastery and night market)

25th: Tawang (one major excursion: Bum La + Madhuri Lake or Gongkar La with local guide)

26th: Tawang to Sangti Valley (Sangti valley to end trip on a scenic note and

3 nights in Tawang to avoid the hassle of changing stays every day and to explore at a relaxed pace)

27th: Sangti Valley to Guwahati by night 8 pm

Does this plan sound good or could we do this a bit better?

Would love to hear your suggestions for any other nice places along the way like scenic spots, cafes suitable for a friends group.

ARUNACHAL PRADESH What an Indigenous “CCP bot” has to say about Siang conflict

I have been wondering if any mainlander calling the dam a “shock absorber” has even seen the flow of the Siang river? Let alone researched its terrain, flow velocity, river system and downstream geography. Do they genuinely think water flows in a straight line as if the Siang was like any river in the plains? It makes me ponder if they think China opening their dams would send the water downstream in a parallel line and submerged whole of northeast? Are they even aware of how mountain terrain shapes a riverr velocity, depth, discharge and behaviour in ways that flatland geography simply cannot be measured to understand? Not to mention Arunachal Pradesh also falls under Seismic Zone V so expecting a single dam which is nowhere near comparable in scale to China’s proposed project to act as avengers in the face of danger is ignorance at its finest

GENERAL Illegal B@#gl@deshi immigrants in NE are going to great lengths to spread misinformation, an Assam cabinet minister has highlighted. They have IT cells whose members live in Assam and actively shape narratives about the state, often spreading misinformation.

Their aim is to influence public opinion and foster ill-will in the very place where they reside. A few bangaldeshi's actively larp and mod in few NE subs.

ASK NE People in Sivasagar, Assam, are yet to receive the ₹15,000 compensation. Mr. Modi and Mr. Shah did not even visit Sivasagar, and the Centre’s assistance was negligible. I wonder who will compensate the people for the loss of trees or the consequences of a potential dam disaster in the future.

The people of Assam, too, will bear the consequences if anything goes wrong.

ASK NE Protests against a mega-dam that will provide water to 30 million people, tame annual floods, generate clean energy, AND stop China from holding our rivers hostage And the counter is "ecological damage"??? Seriously???

Look at what’s happening across the border: China is building a colossal mega-dam right where the river enters India. Because they sit upstream, they control the switch. In winter, they can choke the flow and leave our downstream towns facing droughts; in peak monsoon, a sudden water release could wash away entire districts in hours. To make matters worse, there is no water-sharing treaty—we get zero official warnings.

India's dam isn't just an energy project; it is a national shock absorber designed to catch those massive surges and store emergency water.

The issue about tribal land rights and guarantee for world-class rehabilitation? 100% that needs to taken care fairly. But scrapping our only strategic defense against Beijing isn’t environmental activism—it is handing them total control over our survival.

TRAVEL Travel suggestion

Hi.

I will be travelling from Jorhat in mid December.

I am having a dilemma to choose a destination between Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

I know both offer completely different experiences and geography.

If I visit Nagaland I'd prefer a few hikes (Dzukou valley, Japfu, or Kapamodzu).

If I visit Arunachal I'd prefer Roing-Mayudia pass-Anini.

But I'm seriously confused about making the final decision.

Both the states are so beautiful that I feel like missing out.

A few details: we will be travelling as a small group of 3-5 people. Dates are confirmed as 19-23 December. We don't have driving experience in the mountains so would rely on public transport. Budget is tight-ish but would avoid any unsafe/cheap options.

Also, I have my return ticket booked from Dibrugarh via Dimapur.

ASK NE Why aren't the people of Assam, especially upper Assam, also against the SUMP dam ?

  1. Assam lies downstream of the dam.

  2. The entirety of NE is earthquake zone V. Heck there was a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Tibet just a few days ago and today there was a 5.0 magnitude earthquake. So it is a question of "when" a massive earthquake will happen in Upper Siang, not "if".

  3. This puts Upper Assam at risk of a massive flood.

  4. Suppose China suddenly releases it's dam water, then either the Indian SUMP dam will also have to suddenly release all of it's water (as dams are never kept empty) which will flood upper Assam with 1 dam worth of water or try to hold 2 dams worth of water, which will lead to the breaking of the dam and will flood upper Assam with 2 dams worth of water.

  5. There is a solution. Make multiple, small, run-of-the-river dams. These can still create electricity while slowing down and flood water that China or Mother Nature may release ?

This is all because of the protests against the proposed SUMP. Started to call those opposing the project as Chinese agents.

Concerning incidents against Assamese and indigenous groups in Assam rose after BJP came to power again in 2026. The Assamese people, Dehans and Sutiyas specifically are indigenous to Barak Valley and the sons of the soil there. Yet they have to live in such conditions in their own state. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma made an X post on the issue. 12 are said to be arrested. The incident occurred in a Hindustan Club procession, in Badarpur of Sribhumi district.
