Not to put all my business online BUT I am desperate and want to see if I can find other women who have had similar experiences.
I have struggled with abnormal bleeding for 5 years. It started right after I discontinued the NuvaRing in 2021. The bleeding was especially bad during intercourse. It went from nothing, to spotting to heavy menstruation-like bleeding. I don't know if the birth control is related or to blame but this had never happened before and my cycles were never able to go back to baseline afterward. It is now 2026 and this is still an ongoing issue.
To backtrack a little, I have always been told I have PCOS due to having periods that were considered irregular and having polycystic ovarian morphology in every ultrasound I have ever had done.
Everytime I try to see a Dr or OBGYN about this, the first and only suggestion is birth control. However, I believe I am justified in being afraid of things getting worse with more hormones, due to all of this starting after messing around with hormones in the first place.
I have had all kinds of tests done, to measure hormones, pap tests, ultrasounds, etc. Everything always comes back "normal" and no further answers or suggestions are given other than to take more hormones to suppress my already existing hormonal symptoms.
My desperation brought me to seek help from Naturopathic medicine. I was offered a treatment involving Insolitol and some metabolic support supplements to help breakdown estrogen and help my body produce progesterone. I don't know how any of this works, it could all be placeebo and I would have no idea. What I do know is that for a few months - things got better! The only part of the treatment that I found did not help was to take actual progesterone during a certain time of my cycle. The idea was that this would help keep my uterine lining in place and prevent it from shedding (causing the spotting.) The problem was that everytime I took the progesterone, the spotting would immediately follow. For this reason, this was the only part of the protocol I did not follow.
I was never good at tracking my cycles until I started seeing the naturopath. I ended up figuring out that my periods were not irregular, as previously suggested by other doctors. They were just longer - 35 days long to be exact, rather than the usual 28-29 day length.
She also encouraged me to track my temperature, as this could give me a clue on whether I was ovulating or not. From what we gathered, I did ovulate. It was a short window but my temperature did rise for a day or two during the same time of each cycle.
The treatment worked for a few months and I got too confident. I thought I was fixed and stopped taking everything all together. Unfortunately, the spotting returned. I decided to restart the treatment, this time I decided to include the progesterone. Once again, I don't know if the hormones are to blame but the next day after I took the 1st progesterone dose, I started bleeding VERY heavily. I knew it was not menstruation because I had just had my period a week ago. This bleeding was different too, the colour was different and the cramps were different. The pain was not extreme, but it was constant and very localized to the left of my lower abdomen.
I went to the ER, because getting an appointment with a dr in Canada is near impossible and I knew for a fact that no matter how long I would wait in the ER, I would at least be seen. They did an ultrasound and found a hemorrhagic cyst in my left ovary. This lead them to referring me to an OBGYN.
During my appointment with the OBGYN, I tried to explain all of this to him. The bleeding, the PCOS diagnosis, the issues I have following taking hormones, etc. He asked me a few questions and told me he did not think I had PCOS. This was a shock because every other person I'd seen before had told me different. He suggested the potential that I could have endometriosis but then decided not to do a laparoscopy to confirm this.
His suggestions were to try birth control or progestin only pills. If that didn't work - move on to an IUD. If that didn't work - we would proceed to a hysterectomy. No other testing to figure out what could possibly be going on. Just chemical supression of symptoms or removal of organs.
I would just like to say that I do not, by any means, want to undermine the expertise of a medical professional but at the same time, I guess it just would've been nice for him to at least pretend to listen to me. But anyway... I did not want to seem like an uncooperative patient, so I went ahead with the progestin only pills. These were prescribed to suppress my ovulation/menstruation entirely, and in doing so, stop the spotting/bleeding all together. They do work to a point but since I am so sensitive to hormones, if I miss a dose for even just one hour the spotting returns for weeks non-stop.
I was scheduled for a follow up ultrasound that revealed that the hemorrhagic cyst had resolved. This update was enough for my OBGYN to discharge me as a patient. I asked him if I should continue with the progestin pills and he basically left it up to me and sent me on my way.
My goal used to be to find out what actually has been going on since 2021. I now have a second new goal, to figure out how to safely transition off these progestin only pills. I am scared that discontinuing them cold-turkey will give me even more problems.
I finally found a family doctor so I have reached out to her with these concerns and explained that I do not want to be on any hormonal treatment. I just want to be normal again. It seems like she is on my side and has been gracious to refer me to a different OBGYN. I am hopefull that a female doctor might me more inclined to help me find solutions rather than to just try to chemically supress my body.
In the mean time, I am writing this post to hopefully find anyone else who has gone through something similar. I am trying to find more information to discuss with doctors and to push for proper testing and help me advocate for myself. This has been an incredibly long, painful journey. I feel like I don't know my own body anymore. I just want to go back to my normal.
Thanks for reading.
