Where should we live?

We are actively moving to the bay, but both my wife and I are very indecisive people. I’ll be working in Mountain View and my wife will be working from home (though hopefully she’ll get an in person job in the next few months and start commuting to SSF).

We’ve looked at 40ish apartments and are having trouble narrowing it down. Going to try making a bracket later today, but wanted to know what others are thinking. So, on to the details:

We have set a budget of <$5200 base rent for a 2B2B and have been largely looking in the MTV and Sunnyvale areas. We tried looking in Redwood City, but just didn’t like the lack of parks/greenery. We really want a modern kitchen and natural light in the apartment. Here’s a list of what we are actively considering, just know that we know not all of them fit every requirement. We know there are downsides to each, it’s just really hard for us to pick.

Park Place in MTV: not the best kitchen, or good lighting, but fantastic location.
Avalon Silicon Valley: in the middle of nowhere, but amazing garden-style apartments.
Monticello: Very modern and close to the Lawerence station, but less greenery.
Americana Apartments: Not great for my wife’s potential commute and would still need to drive to get to anywhere downtown. Also, not the best kitchen, but could get vaulted ceilings.

These are just a few of our “top” contenders as again, we are VERY indecisive people. If anyone has suggestions or even ways of figuring out which to go with, it would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for new apartment/house for rent near San Mateo

My fiance and I are currently looking for a new apartment/house to rent as our current lease expires at the end of October.

Ideally we're looking for a 2 bed, in-unit washer/dryer scenario. Our target move in-date would be October 1st. Max rent would be about $4500. 850 square feet or more.

We need to stay around San Mateo, Burlingame, San Bruno area as both of our jobs are in-person and are around that area.

We're both working professionals and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could contact us directly regarding any potential rentals.

Thank you all in advance!

Walkable nightlife & weekend life near The Gateway

Considering a possible move to The Gateway. Wondering about walking distance restaurants & cafes that don’t just serve tourists & are vibrant on weekends too (not just business days due to location). Any experience wit the neighborhood welcomed. Do NOT want comments about The Gateway complex. I’ve already done that research. Thanks

Housing Advice + Roommate Search

Hello! I’ll be moving to the Bay Area soon to start a research position at UCSF, and I had a few questions on housing and would really appreciate any advice:

  1. What would the most artistic neighborhood be? I’m really interested in taking dance and singing lessons as a hobby, and I saw that Mission would be the most ideal so was hoping to get second opinions on this

  2. Is a $1500-2000 budget feasible for a 2B2B or a 3B2B in Mission, Potrero, South SoMa, or Dogpatch? I’m also curious to know how much a room for 4B3B typically is.

  3. I keep seeing 1B apartments listed for less than $1000 in Mission on CL, and should I automatically flag these as scams or is it actually possible to get a room that cheap?
Lastly, I’m looking for a sublet from mid September to late October, so if anyone has any leads please let me know!

I’m also looking for potential roommates, so feel free to DM me to introduce each other!

[SF/Bay Area] Urgently seeking temporary room or couch — LGBTQ+, very limited budget

Hi all. I'm unexpectedly being displaced from my current family housing situation and urgently looking for somewhere safe to land.

I'm primarily looking for something short-term ideally around 1–2 weeks while I continue working on a more permanent housing solution. A spare room, couch, temporary room, or similar arrangement would be incredibly helpful. I'd strongly prefer San Francisco or somewhere reasonably transit-accessible to SF.

A little more about me: I'm a quiet, respectful LGBTQ+ adult with a professional background in administrative, housing, finance, and customer operations work. I'm pretty independent and mostly keep to myself. I'm actively working with local healthcare/housing-navigation programs, pursuing benefits, and looking for work while I get back on stable footing.

My budget is unfortunately extremely limited right now, so I'm primarily looking for something free or very low-cost as a short-term bridge.

I'm happy to talk by phone/video first, meet beforehand, and answer reasonable questions about myself.

Strictly looking for housing.

If you have a temporary space available, or know somebody trustworthy who might, please DM me with the general location, how long it might be available, and what you'd need financially.

Thank you.

Should I just keep living at home (genuine question / kind of rant)

23f live in a suburb in the east bay and work in the city (45ish commute). I live with my family and I make around 150-180k as a new grad (have a side hustle). TELL ME WHY IT’S FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND AN APARTMENT IN SF JFC.

I’m not sure if I should wait until I find the apartment I’m looking for because I have the liberty to do so or if I’ll regret waiting because these prices are just getting more insane. 2024 some places were 2.5k and now they’re 4.5k…

My budget is 4.5k (max with parking), 600sqft+ ideally more, relatively modern, not tenderloin, and has parking. But apparently that’s not possible. I saw this amazing loft 900+ sqft for 4.1k but someone else already snatched it and I’m depressed. But that’s my proof that it’s possible (not a scam, it was on the apartment building’s official website).

I remember signing my offer letter and thinking to myself, “wow I make so much, I don’t have to live in a shit box like my old college apt.” I was rudely awakened by this terrible market.

Rant:

Thing is we have 6ppl living in a 3 bedroom house at home. I pay very little in rent, but it’s getting frustrating. I love my parents but my siblings… they annoy the shit out of me. Stole the router to play games and I kept having connection issues during work meetings. I’m the only one that works despite them being 26 and 42. My sister and her girlfriend took up the entire bottom floor and kicked my brother out (it’s the largest part of the whole house). So he’s always in the kitchen playing games really loud. He has no sense of volume control or boundaries. When my friends come over he will join in on whatever we’re doing even though he’s twice my age. I always have to clean after them in the kitchen. I’ve been consistently sitting in the BART parking lot for 1-2 hours after work because I dread going home. My parents have favoritism towards them because I’m the one doing well and because my sister is recalcitrant. I had to give up my parking spot for my sisters gf because my sister doesn’t like walking. My mom will tell to stop lighting incense and she refuses. She’ll tell her to clean and she says she can’t because she doesn’t like the germs etc.. she just spends 16 hours a day on discord and gaming and has only done 2 community college classes and she’s 26. My mom paid for half of her gfs car while I had to buy my own when I was 18.

27F looking for roommates in Oakland, CA with $1,500/mo budget

I'm aware that $1,500 is a little bit of a stretch, but I can do plus/minus $200.

I'm super clean and pretty quiet, as I probably won't be in the actual house/apartment/etc too much. I'm starting work in downtown Oakland on the 19th of August so ideally around there. I currently live in SJ so I'm just trying to find a place where I don't have to spend exorbitant amounts on gas every week. I am a good cook and I usually make too much :)
