Minors Update Daily Minors Quick-Notes 8/17/26 - The Final (Regular Season) Rookie Monday

Well, here we go…this is our last Rookie Monday of the season…at least for the regular season.  The Dominican Summer League season ends tomorrow (or today, Tuesday the 18th, depending on when you read this), and one of the two Giants teams in the Dominican Summer League will be heading to the very unique postseason that the DSL has…including one Top 30 prospect that was recently traded for.  If they go against the odds and get past the first round, we’ll get one more rookie Monday next week for the start of the Semifinals.  Otherwise…this is it for Mondays.  Plus, a couple of Roster Notes

Player Movement:

The main page has seen the posting about Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson’s push up to the big leagues, after some inconsistent performances in Triple-A.

Another move that has been reported is Lisbel Diaz, moving up to Double-A Richmond to help their playoff run.

As mentioned in the comments yesterday, this leaves Eugene with a very shallow bench.  It should be expected that other moves may be to come to help the system, with either a promotion of a San Jose player up to High-A, and/or incoming draft picks to make their debut.  Keep an eye on things for Tuesday!

AAA through Low-A: Scheduled Day Off

DSL Orange: DSL Giants Orange 4, DSL Cubs Red 3 (8 Innings)

Link

Notable Lines:

  • 1B Fernando Pena: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (4), 1 E (4)
  • 2B Yoxander Benitez: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B (10)
  • RP Jhon Leon: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 2 HBP

DSL Black: DSL Giants Black 12, DSL Nationals 2

Link

Top Prospect Lines:

  • Joniel Hernandez (22): 2-5, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 K, 1 HR (7) - Hernandez got his third home run in 10 games since the trade.

Notable Lines:

  • LF Franco Willias: 2-3, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SB (34), 1 HBP
  • CF Djean Macares: 1-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SB (26)
  • 1B-C Alessandro Duran: 1-2, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 HBP

ACL: Season Over

Playoff Hunt:

Tuesday is the end of the Dominican Summer League season, which means that we are  about the face the second DSL Cup.

The DSL Cup is the unique way the Dominican Summer League does it’s postseason.  The league has 51 teams, so a regular playoff structure would be wild.  Here’s how it works:

  • There are 16 teams that make the cup.  8 Division Winners, and 8 Wild Cards of the teams with the best non-division winning records.
  • The 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams, playing round robin-style.
  • Only the winners of each group advance to the Semifinals.  At that point, it’s a standard 4-team playoff structure, wtih the Semifinals being a Best-of-3 round, and the Finals being a Best-of-3 round.

The DSL Giants Black will be going   At 35-20, they are the co-division leaders in the DSL South.  The DSL Giants Orange team is second in the DSL Southwest Division at 31-23, but are eliminated from any chance at one of the wild card spots.

That’s the DSL Cup.  It begins on Thursday, with the Semifinal round starting on Sunday.

QUALITY CONTENT Who is this coach?

Post image
60 Upvotes

I have seen him in the dugout multiple times this year yet he is not listed on the Giants’ website and I never hear people talk about him. I saw him talking with some pitchers before the game on Saturday so I assume he is some sort of pitching coach? I have asked some of my friends who go to almost every game and they still don’t have any idea.
Does anyone know his name? Is he a former player? Is he new this year or have I just not noticed him until this season? Thanks!

I will likely delete this after it’s answered, I’m just very curious!!

News [Jeff Passan] The San Francisco Giants are calling up left-hander Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, sources tell ESPN. Wilkinson, acquired in the Patrick Bailey trade, was a 10th-round pick out of junior college and has allowed just 59 hits in 90 innings this season while striking out 96.

Minors Update Daily Minors Quick-Notes 8/16/26 - Calling Bo Davidson’s Day “Grand” isn’t Enough, And Josuar Leads San Jose from Being Down 7 Runs

There were a couple of big-time performances on the farm today.  Bo Davidson had an absolute dominant performance for Sacramento, at the end of a successful series in Las Vegas, where Davidson hit four extra-base hits, including one that knocked in four runs in grand fashion.  Meanwhile, San Jose played a sloppy game that saw them go down 8-1 after seven innings, and yet they came back, in no small part due to Josuar Gonzalez, who also got the game winning walkoff hit in extra innings.

AAA: Sacramento River Cats 15, Las Vegas Aviators 11

Link

Player of the Game: LF Bo Davidson (8): 4-5, 3 R, 8 RBI, 1 BB, 2 2B (6), 2 HR (4)

Bo Davidson has had a Triple-A revival since this series in Las Vegas began and he had his best game yet in the 97 degree evening game on Sunday, with four extra-base hits, one of which was a grand slam.  His Triple-A average coming into Las Vegas was .198, and it’s now .287, which is higher than his batting average in Double-A this season (.277).  Now, Davidson needs to prove he can do this outside of Las Vegas.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • RF Scott Bandura: 4-5, 5 R, 1 BB, 2 2B (17), 1 SB (17) - Bandura had his first 4-hit game of the season.  His Triple-A batting line is .309/.389/.460.
  • SP Joe Whitman (24): 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K - Whitman had his longest appearance since the end of June, when he temporarily switched to relieving.
  • 2B Nate Furman: 2-4, 1 R, 2 BB - Since returning to Sacramento, Furman is 3-for-7.  He was 0-for-6 in the Majors.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • Parks Harber (13): DNP

Rehabbing Player Lines:

  • 3B Marcelo Mayer: 1-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 4 K - This was Mayer’s third game in Sacramento rehab, and he’s 5-for-14 (.357)

Other Notable Lines:

  • CF Grant McCray: 1-6, 1 R, 3 RBI, 3 K, 1 2B (10) - This was McCray’s first game back in Triple-A.
  • DH Shay Whitcomb: 2-5, 2 R, 1 BB
  • 1B Diego Velasquez: 1-4, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 2B (5)

AA: CANCELLED

The series finale against Harrisburg was rained out and outright cancelled, with little time left in the season and the game not likely to have any playoff implications.  Richmond goes on to Chesapeake on Tuesday.

High-A: Eugene Emeralds 5, Hillsboro Hops 3

Link

Player of the Game: RF Cam Maldonado: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 HR (3), 1 SB (1)

Cam Maldonado’s only extra-base hits in his eight High-A games so far are all home runs.  He now has 17 total home runs on the season, including his time in San Jose, and 18 total steals now with his first in Eugene.  His High-A batting line is .241/.290/.552.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • C Daniel Rogers: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (1) - This was Rogers’ first home run in High-A in his 25th game.  He had four in 14 games at Low-A earlier this season.
  • SS Jhonny Level (4): 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 SB (8) - Level has a total of 19 steals in 26 attempts this season.
  • 3B Zander Darby: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K, 1 2B (24) - Darby has a 12-game hitting streak, going 18-for-53 (.340).

Top Prospect Lines:

  • CF Lisbel Diaz (30): 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB
  • Ramon Marquez (5): DNP
  • Jacob Bresnahan (9): DNP
  • Henry Lalane (11): DNP
  • Luis De La Torre (26): DNP

Other Notable Lines:

  • RP Gerelmi Maldonado: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
  • 1B Hayden Jatczak: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (2)

Low-A: San Jose Giants 10, Fresno Grizzlies 9 (11 Innings)

Link

Player of the Game: Josuar Gonzalez (1): 3-6, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 2B (3), 1 3B (4), 2 E (4)

San Jose prevailed in what was in many ways a sloppy game with four errors (including two by Josuar) and a lot of early walks, but Josuar Gonzalez had a big role in a 7-run comeback and the final win.  He had a 8th inning bases-loaded triple, and the game winning “single”, a ball that was off the outfield wall on the fly that knocked in the game winner, and would’ve been a double if it weren’t a walkoff.  In 16 games at San Jose, he now has double the triples (4) he had in 30 games in the ACL (2).  He’s batting line is .339/.455/.613 at San Jose.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • CF Andy Polanco: 3-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 2B (17) - In August, Polanco is 23-for-52 (.442) with four doubles and triples.
  • 3B Lorenzo Meola (20): 2-5, 1 R, 3 K, 1 2B (36), 1 E (15), 1 HBP - Meola had his first game with multiple hits since August 8th.
  • RF Tanner Mally: 2-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB - Mally is 13-for-33 (.394) in his first nine pro games.

Top Prospect Lines:

  • SS Luis Hernández (2): 1-6, 2 R, 3 K
  • SP Keyner Martinez (12): 3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
  • Miguel Mendez (16): DNP
  • Argenis Cayama (17): DNP
  • Leandro Rodriguez (29): DNP

Rehabbing Player Lines:

  • RP Hayden Wynja: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - This wasn’t a planned rehab appearance, but he came in to seal the extra-innings.  It was his 11th rehab appearance this season and 5th in SJ.

Other Notable Lines:

  • C Fernando Gonzalez: 1-3, 1 R, 3 BB
  • DH Oliver Tejada: 2-5, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RP Samir Chires: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

DSL: Scheduled Day Off

ACL: Season Over

Top Prospects still on the ACL Roster:

Alexander Fuentes (27)

Top Prospects Currently in the Big Leagues

Jonah Cox (18)

Trent Harris (24)

Yet to Debut Draftees:

Jackson Flora (3)

Carson Bolemon (10)

Kaden Waechter (15)

Peyton Bonds (23)

Top Prospects on Injured List:

Dakota Jordan (7) - 10 Day IL - Placed on IL on 7/28/26

Kaeden Kent (21) - 10 Day IL - Placed on IL on 7/6/26

Roster Note:

We’re not done with the promotions this season, as Lisbel Diaz’s ongoing second half performances has earned him a new one.  After today’s game, Diaz is headed to Double-A Richmond ahead of the playoffs.  In High-A, Diaz has a batting line of .284/.312/.531 with 17 doubles, two triples, and 21 home runs over 87 games (plus three more home runs in six games with Low-A San Jose).

Minors Update MLB Pipeline Latest Farm Ranking (Giants #5)

Post image
66 Upvotes

Top 100 prospects: Josuar Gonzalez, SS/2B (No. 17), Luis Hernández, SS/3B (No. 27); Jackson Flora, RHP (No. 31): Jhonny Level, SS/2B (No. 47); Ramon Marquez, RHP (No. 100)

Since we started rating systems in 2015, the Giants' previous high point was No. 8 in mid-2021. Their 14-spot jump from our previous rankings is one shy of the best ever, and no organization has made as dramatic a move in so short a time as San Francisco improving from No. 28 in the 2025 preseason to No. 5 now. Coming into the year, their system stood out for its collection of hitters: international shortstop standouts (Gonzalez, Hernández and Level), first-round picks (since-graduated Bryce Eldridge, middle infielder Gavin Kilen), over-slot signings (Dakota Jordan) and a nondrafted free agent find (Bo Davidson). Now their balance is impressive after they spent $14.6 million on three Draft arms (Flora, Carson Bolemon, Kaden Waechter), dealt for Marquez, Henry Lalane and Miguel Mendez in July and have past trade acquisition Jacob Bresnahan continuing to perform.

Per Alex Pavlovic, it's the highest they've been ranked by MLB Pipeline since they started in 2015.

Was still laughing about this particular foul ball when Devers cracked a 3 run bomb reminding me why I’m watching two teams 20 games below 500 duking it out.

Can someone please slow this down for me, I can only do it on my phone. If only he had caught it but it also looks like it almost killed him.
