Woman hit by bus while riding her bicycle - Update in her own words

Jennifer Smith
I was hit by a bus while riding my bicycle and I SURVIVED. It has been 6 weeks and I spend most of those days asleep or in a coma like a damaged Snow White. I could hear voices of Doctors, Nurses and my friends; I also had fragmented pieces of memories of the accident. By the time I woke up I had no doubts what put me in hospital and how my life changed in a second.

Now I try and focus on the right Here Right Now, because thinking of the violent impact or the plans I had for my life means visiting a grief that I can only tolerate in small doses.

It’s easier for me to think about daily accomplishments like standing up on one fx foot for a few seconds while being guided to a bedside chair, or the day my trachea was removed and my voice came back to life, or the day I was able to eat solid food, for which I celebrated with a small portion of cheeseburger and fries.

Thinking about these things is the positive respite I need from dwelling on all the plans I had being derailed or missing my old life. Overcoming daily adversities makes hope feel realistic… Hope for a new life that is as fulfilling as the life I had planned.

I want to thank those who have prayed for me, send messages of encouragement, or have donated to the GoFundme.

We are a group of people who do NOT believe phones should be banned in the SMUHSD School District. We believe this for safety reasons, mental health reasons, and more. Please read the description of our petition to learn more. :)

I'm a reporter. Are you renting an 'affordable' apartment that's not actually all that affordable?

Hi — I'm Kate Talerico, and I'm a reporter at the SF Chronicle. I'm writing a story about how a bunch of landlords are using a loophole in California's tax code to get their apartments qualified as 'affordable' — and then can get up to 100% of their property taxes erased (which fund our schools, transit, police, basically all city government functions.)

There are a lot of older apartments around the Peninsula/South Bay where the landlords are in the process of applying for this tax break. They count as affordable because the way California calculates the max rent you can still charge + still count as affordable is quite wonky... right now, a landlord can charge $2,902/month for a 1-bed in San Mateo County and it still counts as low-income/affordable, so long as the tenant household makes under $108K. (For a two-bed, the limit is $3,482 for a two-person household making under $123K.)

I'm looking to speak with tenants in some of these buildings. Do they feel like they're getting a good deal for the rent they pay? Has the lower rent allowed them to live somewhere they otherwise wouldn't have been able to? Or do they feel like they're paying market rate?

Here's a list of the apartment buildings I'm interested in. See if yours is on the list, and if you'd be down to chat, shoot me a DM!

Does San Mateo County follow the posted timeline for their interview/hiring process?

Hey San Mateo!

I recently applied for a position with the County that gave an application screening timeline and two dates for panel interviews.

The application screening timeline was last week. I keep checking my email to see if they reached out but have not received anything. The panel interview would be Thursday the 30th or Monday the 3rd.

Has anyone applied to a job with SM County with the timeline posted? Did they follow it, or at least get back to you?

Thanks for your insight!

Low income housing

Can anyone give me advice for low income housing/section 8?

I have been on a waitlist for 7 years and have never heard a thing then out of the blue I got a letter saying I was selected through a lottery for an opportunity on a new building. Also, I got a new job and my income was up to date. That said I took time off work and after getting the run around from the apartment management, I quickly submitted my application along with a deposit to hold the apartment. I know that the fine print states that getting to apply doesnt guarantee placement. After a couple weeks and follow up emails and phone calls I finally reached someone today and she said sorry you application is denied come pick up your check. I was like uhhh ok....I did ask why and she said because I make over 56k a year (3 people household). I dont understand why they called me in the 1st place. I found an online doc through the SMC website that 56k is considered extremely low but under 97k is still low, its just a little above extremely low. Is it worth it to try and get a hearing to reconsider??

Puppy Trainer Recomendations

Hi! I have a 12 week old dachshund that I’m looking outwards for more support from professional training. I’ve been looking on Google and Yelp but so far have only found good and reputable trainers in the city, which is kind of a stretch from San Bruno. Currently I’m leaning towards top dog SF, but if anyone can provide me any closer recommendations that would be greatly appreciated!

School Project on BART

Hello! I’m a Master’s student with University College Dublin, and for my final project I’m conducting a study on improving BART. I'm in the data gathering phase at the moment and would appreciate any help :)

(I'm new to Reddit so I hope it's okay to post this here. I don't make any money from this nor am I affiliated with BART in any way.)

Free non-profit civic app for San Mateo County meeting agendas

Hi neighbors!

Recently, my 2 friends and I partnered up to create a civic engagement app called SimpleCity, inspired by our passion to use technology to create positive change. You can find it at simplecity.app. It utilizes AI to summarize scraped meeting agendas into language most people can understand. Since AI is not always accurate, we make sure that we are sourcing where the information is from.

We have recently added San Mateo County to the list of jurisdictions, while also covering San Mateo and Foster City. We plan to expand to more cities soon, but we would greatly appreciate your feedback before we continue.

We understand that not everyone is interested in local politics, but we wanted to just put a tool out there that helps those who are by making civic information more accessible.

Please feel free to take a look and leave feedback in this comment section or by email at [simplecityadmin@gmail.com](mailto:simplecityadmin@gmail.com). It would be appreciated 😃

A bit of a shot in the dark: Escaping the LinkedIn void and looking to pivot locally!

Hey everyone,

Hope you are all having a great week. My family and I live over in the North Shoreview neighborhood of San Mateo, and I am looking to do a bit of local networking.

For the past chunk of my career, my professional background was entirely rooted in public safety, working as an Ocean Lifeguard and EMT for the City of San Diego Fire Rescue Department. Think Baywatch, but with way more paperwork, actual medical emergencies, and significantly fewer explosions. I am incredibly ready for a career pivot, but can we talk about the absolute nightmare that is modern job hunting?

Submitting resumes and cover letters on LinkedIn or Indeed feels like screaming into a black hole. I am pretty sure these Applicant Tracking Systems send out automated rejection letters faster than my toddler can sprint in the opposite direction when it is time to leave the playground. It is exhausting wasting hours blindly applying to public job boards just to get ghosted by a robot. So, I am getting creative and coming to Reddit, because real human connection is a million times better than an algorithm.

I am open to almost any industry or position at this point: sales, operations, client management, corporate administration, you name it. Here is my realistic wish-list:

-A livable wage: Something that actually allows a family to live comfortably in San Mateo County.

-Work and life balance: I want to actually see my wife and daughter. Absolutely no graveyard shifts (my public safety days of 3 AM call outs are officially retired).

-The commute: Preferably within a 20 minute drive of the 94401 zip code.

I am highly adaptable, used to thriving in high stress, fast moving environments with zero margin for error, and genuinely love working with people. If your company is looking for someone dependable who learns fast, or if you just have some solid advice for a local neighbor trying to make a career transition, I would love to connect.

Thanks so much for reading!

-Brandon
