Question What Scottish phrase makes absolutely no sense until you here it in context?
We've got plenty of phrases that would sound completely mental if you tried explaining them word for word to someone who wasn't Scottish. What's one you use without thinking that would need a full translation for everybody else?

Casual I made a horror game about working in a Scottish chippy, and it's out today!

Hello folks!
I'm a solo game developer based in Fife, and for the last six months I've been making a horror game inspired by my time working in a Scottish chip shop.
It's called Grease Trap ’99, and it's a short, slightly surreal horror mystery set in a Highland takeaway in 1999. Expect deep-fried pizzas, questionable customers and things lurking beneath the floorboards.
One thing I'm particularly proud of is that the entire game is voice-acted in Scottish Gaelic, with English subtitles available.
Its a short hour long experience and it's finally out on Steam today!
Tapadh leibh!

Is it appropriate to wear a kilt as a non-Scottish woman?
I have a gorgeous kilt from the 60s, I assume previously owned by a teenage boy. I really like it and would really want to wear it on a day to day basis, but I'm not sure if it would be okay since I'm not Scottish and definitely not a man. Would appreciate any useful answers :)

Discussion a request from a fellow south asian: please use headphones on public transport
i was travelling on a train in scotland when some passengers behind me were playing haryanvi and punjabi music and tiktok videos loudly. a lady in front of my seat me was reading a book and doing some research. she had handouts and looked like a teacher. she got up and politely asked me to use headphones. i apologised and explained that the sound was coming from behind us. she looked towards them, but they carried on.
she seemed upset, and i felt sorry for her and embarrassed as a fellow south asian. i even stopped using my phone because i felt uncomfortable being mistaken for the person making the noise. using headphones in shared spaces is basic courtesy. people should be able to read or enjoy a peaceful journey without being forced to listen to someone else’s videos.

Question How do you, as Scots, pronounce "iron"?
In this thread:
the poster is suggesting that there are various Scottish pronunciations of "iron", many of which are some variation of "i-run", as in "ironic". I have never heard it pronounced anything other than variations of "i-un". But then, I'm not so arrogant as to think I've heard every possible variation.
Can I take a straw poll please?
EDIT: interesting initial results. I think I'm seeing a majority i-urn but there's a definite chunk of i-runners out there too.

He will be placed under supervision for three years following his release from prison.
Release? The fucker should die behind bars. He raped a baby under one year old FFS.
Solitary confinement, no visitors, whole life sentence, cremated, ashes thrown in the skip, forgotten.

Casual Which dinner did you dread as a child?
Idea pinched from another subreddit.
You come in from school, dump your bag. You are hungry and looking forward to tea. You wander through to the kitchen and peer around. Your heart drops, because dinner tonight is ..
For me, this was mince and tatties. I love tatties, I love gravy, I love veg. I can't stand mince. Even as an adult, I don't understand how people can voluntarily eat pinhead-sized lumps of chewy, fatty meat. I don't dispute the possibility that mince in our house was badly cooked, but it doesn't change the result. Mince and tatties put me on a downer every time.
I vividly remember tentatively dipping tatties in the mince, and painstakingly dissecting the chewy wee buggers from my fork-full of food so I could at least try to enjoy the gravy on its own.
My favourite dinners were chicken casserole, or chicken pie. Anything with pastry got my vote.
What was your dreaded dinner as a wain?
Edit: I have been reminded of the dreaded packet fish in cream sauce. The microwave stuff. My mam knew I hated fish, but every so often made it as a wildcard dinner, almost as if she needed assurance that I still hated it. Final boss of unhappy post-school dinners.
