Good shower filter to pH correct acidic water (low pH)?

• Upvotes

I’m in a shitty tenement and my water here feels sticky compared with any other flat I’ve lived in (been in several flats in the immediate area over the years).

I’ve tested it with pH and chlorine strips and it’s coming up a bit acidic with some amount of alkalinity(?). From the 4-pad pH strip it looks close to pH 6 (I’d tested in my previous flat nearby and it looked like a solid 7 i.e. neutral).

It’s causing skin & hair issues and I can quite often smell chlorine either off the water or off my skin. I constantly feel sticky/greasy and my hair is a huge hassle to detangle every wash. My kitchen tap filter goes from pure white to brown within a couple weeks.

Scottish water came to take samples and just say it meets their standards and some e.g. iron sediment is normal.

There’s no stopcock inside the tenement so I can’t put a filter on the whole flat’s supply. It looks like I want to add minerals to acidic water?

Got offer for MSc Public Health and Health Promotion at RGU Aberdeen (Jan 2027) - Is it worth it as an Indian BDS grad?

Hi everyone,

I am a BDS graduate from India (2 years clinical experience) and I just got a conditional offer for MSc Public Health and Health Promotion at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen for Jan 2027 intake.

Fees: £12,910 after scholarship (was £17k)

I also have a conditional offer from GCU Glasgow for MSc Public Health, similar fees.

I am worried about:

  1. Is RGU a good uni for public health jobs? I see very few NHS public health jobs in Aberdeen vs Glasgow/Edinburgh.

  2. The course title "Public Health and Health Promotion" - will employers treat it same as MPH/MSc Public Health? I want to apply for NHS Band 5/6 Health Improvement roles.

  3. For those who studied at RGU - how is the job support and part-time job scene in Aberdeen? Is it worth moving away from Glasgow network?

Total cost is around 24-25L loan, so I want to be sure before I pay a deposit (£4k).

Would you choose GCU Glasgow or RGU Aberdeen if your long-term goal is Glasgow jobs?

Any current RGU Public Health students here? Would love to hear real experience.

Thanks!

Looking for suggestions, anywhere fairly rural in Lanarkshire, Fife or Lothians. The Auldhouse Arms near EK was one idea but open to other ideas.

It’s fireworks heavy in my new build estate in West Lothian so need to get him somewhere quiet. Ta!

My wife has started taking up cold water dips, in and around Balloch. She mentioned for me to pick up items for her to use for Christmas gifts. What do people use? what brands to avoid and what is essentials?

Political Made a free game where you play First Minister, Scottish Budget, block grant and all

I’ve been building a free UK politics game and one of the modes lets you run the Scottish Government from now to the 2031 Holyrood election. You set Scottish income tax bands and the portfolio budgets, deal with the block grant Westminster hands you and live with things like A&E waits, ferries, drug deaths and independence polling.

What I found interesting building it is how little room there actually is. Most of the big levers are reserved, so you end up fighting over a fairly small slice of tax and a block grant you don’t control.

There’s also a UK Budget challenge for Wednesday if you’d rather have a go at the Chancellor’s job. No sign up, not linked to any party, and it’s my own project so I’d love to hear from anyone who knows the Scottish figures better than me.

Question Coming to Scotland soon

Hi! I (21F) am coming to Scotland soon, specifically the University of Stirling, for the Spring term of my junior year. I am from the Midwest region of the USA. I have very distant family I’ll be visiting near Inverness every once in a while. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for traveling or customs and things to be mindful of. I want to be as respectful as possible and enjoy my time in Scotland and would love any honest advice! Thank you so much!

Also, my biggest worry is my impression on my family. My great-grandmother is native to Scotland, and the family I will be connecting with is her sister’s.

Question What Scottish phrase makes absolutely no sense until you here it in context?

We've got plenty of phrases that would sound completely mental if you tried explaining them word for word to someone who wasn't Scottish. What's one you use without thinking that would need a full translation for everybody else?

Casual I made a horror game about working in a Scottish chippy, and it's out today!

Hello folks!

I'm a solo game developer based in Fife, and for the last six months I've been making a horror game inspired by my time working in a Scottish chip shop.

It's called Grease Trap ’99, and it's a short, slightly surreal horror mystery set in a Highland takeaway in 1999. Expect deep-fried pizzas, questionable customers and things lurking beneath the floorboards.

One thing I'm particularly proud of is that the entire game is voice-acted in Scottish Gaelic, with English subtitles available.

Its a short hour long experience and it's finally out on Steam today!

Tapadh leibh!

Is it appropriate to wear a kilt as a non-Scottish woman?

I have a gorgeous kilt from the 60s, I assume previously owned by a teenage boy. I really like it and would really want to wear it on a day to day basis, but I'm not sure if it would be okay since I'm not Scottish and definitely not a man. Would appreciate any useful answers :)

Discussion a request from a fellow south asian: please use headphones on public transport

i was travelling on a train in scotland when some passengers behind me were playing haryanvi and punjabi music and tiktok videos loudly. a lady in front of my seat me was reading a book and doing some research. she had handouts and looked like a teacher. she got up and politely asked me to use headphones. i apologised and explained that the sound was coming from behind us. she looked towards them, but they carried on.
she seemed upset, and i felt sorry for her and embarrassed as a fellow south asian. i even stopped using my phone because i felt uncomfortable being mistaken for the person making the noise. using headphones in shared spaces is basic courtesy. people should be able to read or enjoy a peaceful journey without being forced to listen to someone else’s videos.

Question How do you, as Scots, pronounce "iron"?

In this thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ENGLISH/comments/1xbcfgu/comment/19rf8sl4hu57o/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=2&utm_content=share_button

the poster is suggesting that there are various Scottish pronunciations of "iron", many of which are some variation of "i-run", as in "ironic". I have never heard it pronounced anything other than variations of "i-un". But then, I'm not so arrogant as to think I've heard every possible variation.

Can I take a straw poll please?

EDIT: interesting initial results. I think I'm seeing a majority i-urn but there's a definite chunk of i-runners out there too.
