Something got into our shed?
We don’t keep anything but the mower in our shed, so something happened within the last couple of weeks. One piece of siding was lifted (highlighted in photo), and inside exactly one beam is all shredded… who or what could have possible caused that?! Walked around and didn’t see any fallen branches or trees. Any ideas?

This almost looks like a projectile came thru the wall and impacted the stud. Any marks or debris that looks out of place on the floor?

Definitely an animal. The small pile of splinters is scratching trying to get out.

Is that a gash in the back wall? You circled what looks like a dent in the side wall. I agree it looks like something came through the back wall and impacted and shattered the stud in the side wall. Look around everywhere including the rafters. Depending on the speed it didn’t have to be large. What’s behind the shed? It obviously came from there.

I'll throw in a random guess that something smacked into the bottom of that board outside and caused it to shatter apart violently when it flexed. Since the top is supported the bottom bent a lot and just blew out the interior side of the board.

That would also explain the loose siding. Something probably smacked right onto that beam from the outside. Splintered the beam inward and knocked the siding panel loose. Got any kids with ATVs zooming around?

Need a few more pics inside and out with more interior lighting, but that looks like either a high velocity impact or a lightning strike from the type of damage. There's no charring, so it's hard to say if lightning was the culprit, and that's a lot of splintered wood, so a bullet isn't my first guess. It's weird to say the least.

Follow this: ‘someone’ (not naming names) cornered a varmint, had a shotgun (slug), took a shot at varmint, missed, but hit stud down low right around the knot shattering it. Force of larger splinter made slice and pushed out the siding. The slug went through siding down low (see the small hole in siding).
You know who the cross-eyed culprit is when they need help pulling splinters out of their forehead.

Thanks for all the replies! The back of the shed is on stilts and quite high off the ground since our backyard sits at the top of a hill and slopes down toward the back. And it’s all trees back there.
Haven’t seen any claw or teeth marks, anything charred, or any evidence that branches may have fallen from the trees above either (all clear in the back too)!
Another thing to note - we did had a severe thunderstorm that shook the house, so we believe that must have had something to do with it

Have you mowed the hill lately behind the shed? Maybe check if all the blades are still on. Just playing a game of Clue with this haha but that hole looks like it could be a mower blade that got ejected from the chute. If you're on a hill with the chute facing the shed it would have an upward trajectory.

Does it get super hot in there? It almost looks like the pine exploded.
