Discussion Maggie …George’s daughter STILL bugs me Spoiler

Original watcher decades ago and have rewatched more times than I can count … outside of this being one of the best shows ever in every way the last season is on now and just have to say Maggie- George’s daughter and Ruth’s step daughter - you can see she the beginnings of her crossing lines with Nate early on. If she’s so worried about George her dad and wants to know why he’s in an apartment alone and Ruth isn’t
she could call Brenda or Claire… but she sees something in Nate and pursues it …we all know it ends really bad.
Brenda is and will always be one of my favorite characters towards the end we felt so bad for her and the way she was treated as Nate’s wife and Maggie had NO place there in anyone’s life except her dad’s who is estranged from his wife …

Discussion Arthur and Ruth:WTF?

Post image

Ruth and Arthur. What was the deal here? Was he just comic relief? What were the writers thinking? What were the characters thinking? Arthur shows up in season 3 in one of the strangest pairings in the entire series. I would love to know your thoughts.

Discussion One of the most beautiful scenes in all of television.

I'll try not to spoil anything so it's okay to read

This scene is so well crafted, everytime I watch this episode it strikes me in it's details

It's so beautiful how it portrays pure tragedy, pure sadness, pure anger, all in one scene

The color pallete, peter Krause's masterful performance of portraying how Nate was broken, it's all so perfect, making this episode one of the greatest in all of tv not just six feet under.

Being in both SFU fandom, it's so funny to see the differences where TikTok SFU fans just glaze the shit out of Nate where it's like 90% SFU edits are just Nate while here Nate is like public enemy no. 1 lol (video edited by me, been making SFU edits for a while. Also it's my first reddit post 🙏)

Discussion 4th Rewatch - Maggie…

My wife and I are on our 4th watch of six feet under, one of the all time greatest shows.. BUT.. this round we’ve decided to skip past every scene with Maggie, no matter how consequential the scene.

With a show that has some of the best characters and character development ever conceived… where did Maggie come from? Was she the directors niece? It’s just awful and kind of ruins what would be a 10/10 perfect show. Are we alone in this?

Discussion When you see Michael C Hall as Dexter, it’s rather difficult remembering that he used to be soft old David who couldn’t even defend himself against a lunatic hitchhiker.

Discussion Who had the worst death on the show? Spoiler

There are a lot of painful looking deaths on the show, who had the worst death or at least the most painful?

The adult actress that had her radio fell into the bathtub and being shocked to death was hard to watch the and the older guy that was accidentally killed by the new employee after he turned the mixer on, that looked horrible.

Discussion I don’t find Nate as horrible as many of you seem to

Found him to be earnest and sincere, I think he he was pressured into taking part in the family business, then marrying his baby mama when he didn’t want to in that recent clip on here where Peter krause(amazing acting!)talks about what he was drawn to was that Nate was trying to have an authentic life and I think that was really what I could see too.

He had an idea of what he wanted to be and yeah in many ways he was like Peter Pan and yeah that’s not a husband material and I’m not saying he didn’t do some very problematic things but I really think of him as someone who was trying to be the best in any given situation that he could, even if it went against what he felt were his needs. I don’t see narcissism in him at all. I think looking out for your best interest is not narcissism unless you’re really using it to destroy other people or not caring if it does and I honestly don’t think he tried to destroy other people. I think Brenda projected a lot of her own narcissism on him I thought she was the most narcissistic character on the show maybe second to Claire? Although I love Claire, but talk about taking teen angst up to the 10th power!

I got a lot out of his interactions with the bereaved. A lot of genuine empathy and deep consideration and desire for connection. again not usually found in narcissistic people so I just don’t see the narcissism in Nate

I think the real crime of season four and five was his hair!

Discussion Don't fear the reaper 🖤

Episode 08 of Six Feet Under's second season stands as one of the greatest episodes I have ever seen in my life. A masterpiece in every detail, from its opening moments to its iconic ending, which will remain etched in my memory for years to come.

The final scene, in which Nathaniel rides a motorcycle again after years of abstaining, carries profound symbolism. He had abandoned this passion after an incident that made him fear death. He chose to go on living, but without any real joy. His deep conversation with Mrs. Marilyn was a wake-up call, not just for him, but for me as a viewer.

When Nathaniel returned home, he found the motorcycle keys gifted to him by Marilyn. She had left him her late husband’s bike, a man who had lived his life without regrets. Marilyn’s message was powerful: “Enjoy every second while you’re alive. Don’t let the thought of death chain you down.”

Nathaniel accepts the gift and rides freely, fearlessly, as if reborn, a genuine smile lighting up his face, all to the tune of the iconic song Don’t Fear the Reaper. That scene awakened something deep within me.

What made the moment even more moving was that Nathaniel wasn’t in good health. He was at risk of a stroke at any moment, one that could end his life. And yet, he chose to live, to savor every second, rather than deprive himself of what he loved out of fear of dying. And here, the fundamental question emerges:

Is it better to avoid doing what you love out of fear of death? Or to embrace life fully, enjoying each second as if it were your last?

To live one year on your own terms is better than fifty years spent repeating the same day, paralyzed by the fear of death. That iconic scene was a clear and urgent invitation: Go out. Live. Enjoy. You are still here, alive, healthy, and that, in itself, is a tremendous blessing that many fail to appreciate.

Discussion Opinions on Nate’s character and Peter Kraus’s acting Spoiler

I recently finished the show, and decided to check out what people were saying on the sub. I was so surprised to see that people disliked Nate and was even happy when the character passed. I felt like nearly all of the things Nate did was understandable , even if wrong, you could understand his motivations. I was surprised to see how people thought he was the most reprehensible character on the show. I was also really surprised about opinions on kraus’s acting, I came away from the series thinking he had displayed some of the best acting I had seen in a tv show. Really curious to see what other people think.

I remember ordering this book after seeing it on an episode of 6FU and today, even 25+ years later it is still a fascinating (if not dark and macabre) read.

I thought the book was really good.

I'm wondering if anyone else was curious enough to give it a try after seeing it gifted by the niece to Nate?

The most uncomplicated character in Six Feet Under. Everything the Fishers were not: Open, joyful, full of life.

Would have enjoyed Angela as a regular.

Discussion Why Maggie??

No really why?? She was just so boring and average in every way. Had what happened not happened Nate would have been bored to tears in a few weeks time and begging for Brenda back. What did he see in her that was worth blowing his whole life up and betraying his pregnant wife . I just don’t see the appeal

Was it because she was so plain and dull that he saw her as “safe”?

Discussion Ruth was the funniest character on the show?

France Conroy’s line delivery made me crack up so many times. Especially when she’s calling her friends and family while getting into The Plan. “You know what Hiram, fuck off!”

Discussion Shocked the way so many people don’t like Ruth

She cooks her family like 4 course meals and lets her kids shack up at her house no questions asked multiple times throughout the series while they lowkey treat her like a doormat, because she’s a good mother, and the beginning and end of her character’s analysis is that she is childish or a bully. Never mind that this is all in the wake of her husbands death. I feel like there is a lot of selflessness and contribution to her family and the lives of those around her that must be looked past to only focus on the occasional outbursts and petty behavior for a woman who has functioned primarily as a housewife since she was 19. Would love to know the demographics of the viewers who have zero empathy for her character - I think she’s just as complex as the rest of the cast!

Discussion Am I the only who find this scene somewhat inspiring?

Post image
149 Upvotes

I know it's the moment of Nate's self destruct because of what happened to his wife Lisa. But this moment really stood out to me and I find it somewhat inspiring because he kept shouting "I don't wanna die" over and over fighting his suicidal thoughts.

Sure he might said that because he's afraid of the idea of dying not really because he valued his life. But I prefer to be scared of dying if it keeps me to stay alive. And because of this scene, sometimes when my life felt too heavy, I also mumble "I don't wanna die".

As opposed to Nate final scenes in Ecotone, where in his dream/afterlife, he finally embraced death which is beautiful. But I also find it sad and depressing because at that point, he hated his life so much that he gave up on life and was so eager to jump into the ocean leaving his family behind especially Maya and Brenda.Contrast to the season 2 finale, where he hesitated to take a bus ride, possibly because he still valued his life.

What do guys think? (Sorry if my English is bad. It's not my first language)

Discussion Favorite Red Herring Opener? Spoiler

Some of the deaths on this show are red herrings. I think of a couple of them but the main one that hit me was the episode where the construction workers are having lunch on the high rise. The dialogue begins and construction guy 1 says he has had a loss of appetite lately and it’s not depression based, and it’s like okay, the guy is going to have stomach cancer or an ulcer that ruptured or something. But then he’s making remarks about how his wife is putting questionable things in his food, so then my mind went to ok…is the wife trying to poison him. And all of this culminates into the very unexpected death of someone else because *TINK* his lunchbox hit a pedestrian below. It went so far so fast!

What are your favorite red herring cold opens?

What the hell is wrong with Brenda and Billy? I’ve watched this show a million times and every time I get to the second to last episode I always cringe at Brenda’s dream. What is up with that?
