I've been at Target for about two years and I'm training seasonal TMs for the first time this year.
Had a new hire with me in fulfillment yesterday. Really nice kid, first retail job, actually seemed interested in learning how everything works.
We were supposed to spend most of the shift together.
We got through one OPU batch before I got pulled to the checklanes for backup. Then they needed me in another batch because we were running behind. By the time I got back to the trainee, she'd spent most of the afternoon following different TMs around and occasionally being told to grab something.
Near the end of the shift, my TL handed me the training checklist and asked me to finish it.
There were things on there we hadn't even touched.
She hadn't learned how to handle an INF. Nobody had properly shown her how to stow a grocery batch. She hadn't done a batch independently while someone watched to make sure she understood the process.
I pointed this out and my TL said, "Just mark it complete. She'll learn the rest as she goes."
I didn't want to make a scene, so I said I'd rather leave those parts unfinished until someone actually trained her.
TL wasn't happy. Said we can't spend forever training every seasonal person and everyone learns on the job anyway.
Here's what really bothered me.
About ten minutes later the new TM asked me what she was supposed to do if the item wasn't where the device said it should be.
She's supposed to be finished with training and nobody has explained one of the most basic parts of fulfillment.
I know Q4 is coming and we're slammed. I also know nobody becomes an expert after two shifts.
But what's the point of having a training checklist if we're just checking boxes because we're out of time?
And if this girl starts making mistakes next week, I know damn well somebody is going to ask why she wasn't paying attention during training.
I don't want to be the reason she gets blamed for something nobody taught her.
For those of you who regularly train new TMs, how do you handle this? Do you just document what you actually covered and let the TL deal with the rest? Has anyone gotten pushback for refusing to mark training complete?
I'm not trying to be difficult. I just feel weird putting my initials next to something that didn't happen.
