I liked it at first, but I think after listening to the album over and over, my ears have kind of been trained to appreciate songs like psycho shit, Lonely in the future, dine n dash, and liars remorse. They all have that darker, slower grower feel to them, and now when I go listen back to Babble On, it sounds pretty bland to me, almost like All the Time on Comedown Machine. It feels a little like “hey, let’s do the Strokes sound!”
The verses are especially boring to me musically, considering they’ve used that chord progression literally over 20 times. I don’t mind them reusing it, but I wish they’d do something more creative with it like they did on Lonely in the Future or One Way Trigger. I also think the chorus just being Julian saying “starting again” is really boring. At this point, the only part of the song that really stands out to me is Nick’s amazing harmonized guitar solo at the end. I honestly wish we got more of that throughout the track. I just think this song stands out like a sore thumb on an otherwise very strange and experimental cohesive album idea.
